Aristochromis Chrysti "Malawi Hawk" Click for larger pictures Males: Females Juvies We need some pictures for this Species! Click here to learn how to Submit them Gender specifics: Dimorphic Size expectations: 12" Origin: Lake Malawi (Lakewide distribution) Habitat: Rocky outcrops where sand merges along the border Dietary needs: Carnivore / Piscavore Temperament:Peaceful with anyone larger than its mouth Minimum tank size: 100G Water requirements: ph of 7.2-8.2, temperature 74-80 degrees Breeding requirements:mouth brooder Notes of interest: These are large colorful and impressive fish. They are slow movers, using the entire length of the tank. They are peaceful as long as the other fish can not fit into the huge mouth these guys sport. As far as diets goes, almost all large meaty food stuffs are taken. And the feeding of pellets as a staple is recommended, as they tend to fatten on a diet of meat material alone. In the wild, their diet consists of mbuna for the most part. So the need for some plant matter introduced with pellet based food will keep them from getting too fat. Breeding is accomplished by the use of a large rock to spawn against. The male will dig a "nest" at the base of the rock and brush the female against it while doing the spawning. Spawns were large in number for me from my pair, numbering in the 20 to 40s. The fry are large and can take the smallest pellets upon release from the mother's mouth. Introduce the food stuffs for the fry into a return from a power filter to stimulate their "hunting" drive, and they will eat voraciously from the start. I recommended removing the fry as soon as they are free swimming as the parents will view the young as free food from the start Profile Submitted by: Kirk Sissney (Mongo) Links to Articles for this species:No articles written as of yet for this Species.Click here to learn how to submit yours! |
