AquaClear 110 Modifications (This can be used with other AquaClear models) Many people own the AquaClear filters because they are good at filtering their tank water and keeping the water crystal clear without breaking their wallets. The GPH (gallons per hour) on all models are respectful and they have models to fit different tank sizes. The motor is extremely quite, if your water level is not high enough you might hear a splashing noise from the water exiting the filter. If you have owned these filters long enough you have learned some of their downsides. Only a few exist that I have found, they are as follows: the body could be made of thicker heavier plastic and the media could be made to help stop bypass of water. Since the bypass of water is the biggest problem that I have with the AquaClear filters I have come up with a way to stop the bypass without decreasing GPH. Directions are specifically written for an AquaClear 110 below (please modify for smaller models). I use most of the original media that comes with the filter when you first purchase it. 1.) I start by stacking the original sponge in the bottom of the media basket. 2.) Above that I place a piece of filter floss flat against the sponge to cover it. 3.) This next step is optional: I like my ph to remain on the higher side so I have crushed coral in a piece of panty hose laying on top of the filter floss. If you would like to use the original carbon insert this is where you should place that. If you would like to do both use a carbon insert from a model 70 (old 300) and place both the carbon and crushed coral side by side. 4.) On top of the crushed coral or carbon or both place the ceramic noodles on the very top. 5.) On the intake side of the media basket place either a model 70 or model mini sponge to stop the bypass of water. Now all the water will at least get filtered and this will leave less “poo” to bypass the main filtering sponge. Please look at both diagrams for placements.
