Perhaps my eye is not as discerning as some, but I think they look fine.
They should be... they are using the same molds as the metal minis.... ;)

Reddit user Vandilbg posted an email exchange he had with Dan from GW:

EMAIL 1

I emailed Dan asking him to explain how the Finecast product was more detailed while expressing my unwillingness to buy a "brittle" resin product. I attached photos of the previous Eldar Autarch w PW and Finecast grey version of the same model....... I was pleasantly surprised he took the time to respond at all.

Hey there,
They are exactly the same, the painted model is a resin one. In fact, it's actually the same miniature before and after painting. A lot of the 'Eavy Metal painted models are actually resin miniatures already so it's not a surprise that they look the same. I do agree that you should wait until you see them in person before you choose to buy any. The pictures are good, but they really don't do the miniatures justice. When you get the chance, check them out and see what you think. Even if you just get one to try out. As for being brittle, the resin is very flexible, not like Forge World resin which can snap easily. As I said, take a look at them first and see what you think.

Dan

EMAIL 2

I wrote Dan back and plugged him to include a new Finecast mini as a bonus with white dwarf since so many of us have questions about the material. I also asked him how they would be shipped.

"The models are on sprues yes, and surprisingly durable. So far I have dropped the one I'm doing for the blog twice. Once on my laminate floor at home and once when it was undercoated (it was blown off the table outside by the strong winds we're having here in the UK - I should have known better than to try and spray in high wind...) The model itself in still fine. No damage, no marks, nothing. The really weird thing is the sprue they're on. I cut it at the top (it's square) and I can bend it fully round 180 degrees without it snapping. It's very flexible stuff this new resin. I think the important thing to consider is that we're hobbyists too at GW and the decisions we make are to make the hobby better for us and everyone else. Like you say, it would be silly to put so much effort into them and then not make it worthwhile, and trust me, it really is worth it. The models will be shipped in clampacks, a re more durable form of blister pack, with a picture of a painted miniature on the front. They keep the models nice and safe.

This sounds interesting, and if it's true about the resin, then i'm feeling a lot better about the move to the new material. I am, though, still curious to claims I have heard that this resin is 'not harmful'.

you know what I <3 about you guys? The fact that you're willing to look into things and aren't a bunch of nerd-raging jerkoffs.

*squee* lol!

I just got an email from GW with an advance order update. New DE stuff, and Tomb Kings Ushabti - all in the new Finecast range.

This may cause some headaches though. Does this mean that they will release more resin kits than plastics now? I was (and many others) under the impression that the new TK additions would be in plastic.

More twists and turns!

So, I have to say, upon purchasing the new White Dwarf, and reading the huge article about Finecast, I think, personally, that this is a great move for GW. Just looking at the pictures made me want to take the train back home instead of coming to work and spend the day painting. While i'm still fuzzy on the pricing policy on this, i'm actually pretty excited about the Finecast range. While i'll be pulling in the pursestrings (saving for a wedding and all that) i'll be picking up an odd piece here and there (Canis Wolfborn, i'm looking at you...). It's actually opened up purchasing avenues for me that I wouldn't have bothered with before, like Canis, as huge metal models are a pain in the butt with the pinning and all that. If you have liitle time for a hobby that your passionate about, then this move is good.

What actually got me going was a side by side comparison of a dwarf mini that Aly Morrison sculpted, next to its resin counterpart, and you could see everything, every texture, hair, details galore! I'm really interested to try out this 'new formula' resin and see how it fares with painting.

I R Excited! :tu:
