Hoagy- I was dicking around with some things last night while alternating between drinking beer, doing homework, and recovering from an ass raping of a midterm exam and came up with a way for you to turn your 6 tanks into a rifle company with minimal investment. This list uses the "Fortress Europe book" and uses the Italian variant (costing more points, but upgrading units to confident veteran status). Here it goes.... HQ 30 Command Team 5~ add jeep or troop carrier 50- Sniper team Combat Platoons 175 HQ and 3 rifle squads (each squad is 2 stands of rifle/mg troops, and the HQ included a mortar and PIAT team) 175 HQ and 3 rifle squads (same as above) 175 HQ and 3 rifle squads (same...) Weapons Platoons Brigade Support Platoons Divisional Support Platoons 260 Armored Platoon (3 x Sherman) ~15 add .50 cal machine guns 260 Armored Platoon (3 x Sherman) 355 Royal Artillery, Field Battery Two guns troops with 4 gun sections total: 1,500 on the dot There it is you should be able to build this list for about $200 retail price (so much lower in reality) and gives a fairly straightforward army that offers a wide range of units that should work well together and really give you a feel for the game. The units used would all make good core purchases because they can fit in just about any mid or late war brit army. This gives you a good core of infantry that will be very hard to kill (18 stands total not counting mortars and PIATS). Mortars in the infantry squads give you smoke bombardments to cover your advance. PIATs in the infantry are really good anti-armor. The sniper doesn't do much other than bog down troops, but he comes in one of the box sets you'll need, so I put him in there to fill out your points. Tanks give you extra long-range anti tank and are decent against infantry. Your gigantic ass artillery section would be frightening on the table, because brit arty has some total bastard special rules. For free points, you can also add tractors or trucks to the squad for mobility, but those cost a fair amount of $$$ and aren't a super huge benefit. as for the unit itself, basically you can choose to either fire all 8 guns together or in 2 groups of 4 to give you lots of flexibility. If you fire all 8 together you can choose to either murder (use one template and re-roll failed hits) or stonk (use a double wide template but don't re-roll failed hits). Stonking makes most armies cry. Also important: this army uses an even number of platoons (not counting hq). several missions require you to only put 1/2 of your force (round down) at the start of the game. If you have an odd number of platoons, you wind up putting down 1 less platoon than your enemy, which puts you at a big ass disadvantage. ALWAYS build armies with even numbers of platoons. Here are the things you'd need to buy to finish off this army (just punch the sku into the search at battlefront's site). Prices are all MSRP, you should be able to easily get a 20% or more discount online. BBX11 British Rifle Company $70 (contains ALL of your HQ and infantry including piats mortars and snipers. you'll have 2 snipers left over). BBX09 Royal Artillery Battery x 2 $75 each. This is the expensive part, but a totally worthwhile investment, because these form a bastard core for pretty much any British force BR410 Jeep $14 You get 3 jeeps and only really need one. Feel free to skip the jeep and just come up 5 points short on the army, though.... the jeep really is only there to allow the hq to allocate an extra hit and maybe move a little extra (which wouldn't be too necessary in reality). If the artillery is a bit expensive, you could replace one of the gun sections and drop all of the .50 cal machine guns (losing four guns) with an anti-tank platoon of 2 anti-tank sections (4 guns total) for that you'd need: BBX14 6 pdr Anti-Tank Platoon $45 BR217 Loyd Carrier (x2) x2 $12.50 each .....upon further inspection, that change is only $5 cheaper and probably a bad idea since you lose artillery firepower and wind up with an odd number of platoons...... This is great matey! Thanks for helping me out. As soon as I can get the book, i'll figure out picking those up. I'm hoping that the sale of my Khador stuff will fund this little venture. I'll have to have a good nose through your copy of Fortress Europe next time i'm over. |
