Spearhead is out via US White Dwarf #365 and the Internet as of this weekend. It doesn't really veer away from the regular 40k rules very much as it turns out. You can still play a regular army in a game of spearhead.

Here are the biggest changes for the game.
-force organization chart stays the same, but removes all minimum requirements. Troops are now 0-6 instead of 2-6 etc. you can also take any number of "spearhead formations" outside of the force org chart

-all units are scoring unless they are a swarm or have rules stating they are never scoring units.

-3 new deployments, all played long ways across the table. beware my 240" range artillery :)

-3 new missions

-12 spearhead formations, all available online for free, if you are registered at gw.com. these work like apocalypse data sheets where you pay x points + the cost of units to gain a certain benefit like invulnerable saves for vehicles, +1 strength main guns, scouting mechanised infantry, super killy MCs, and so on. Each spearhead may only be taken ONCE by any army. more spearheads are due out in future WD issues and on-line.

-Spearhead rule- if within 4" of another vehicle in the spearhead formation, members of a spearhead can shoot an extra weapon while moving at up to cruising speed. I like this quite a lot, as it encourages moving of tanks. You can now move combat speed and fire 2 weapons instead of 1 with a tank, or move cruising speed and fire 1 weapon instead of none. good times. Walkers and MCs may run and fire a weapon, in that order. also sweet.

That's about it. Should be pretty straightforward, with no drastic changes. I know at least Lauby and I can adapt our standard armies to this pretty easily ,since we play almost full mech anyway. Frank should be able to have a field day with these rules as well.

The spearhead formations are only available link for spearhead downloadon-line here.

The WD issue contains the missions, deployment, and a few of the rules, outlined above. ...and the fluff, of course.

cheers

hmm, from that overview it seems much better than planetfail.

haha, yeah it looks a lot better, in that it doesn't really alter the main rules too much. it's just another mission and you don't get bullshit free strategems that aren't balanced (see also apocalypse and cities of death).
