The biggest news this Christmas season in Atlantic Canada is the Halifax Mooseheads. Over the past few years Newfoundland had the return of the IceCaps to the AHL and then there was the arrival of the Saint John Sea Dogs, who were top hockey news with their junior success including a Memorial Cup a few years ago. But over the last few months the Halifax Mooseheads, for so many reasons, have become the talk of the hockey world in Atlantic Canada; in fact there are few sports stories that can knock them off the perch this season. For starters, for the first time since their inception in 1994 the Mooseheads hit the number 1 spot in so far as Major Junior hockey teams in Canada and have kept that honour for the last seven weeks. Now mind you, no trophies are bestowed to the team that finishes in first spot in those rankings but it is a measure of a teams success and let me tell you that Mooseheads hockey and success have not been synonymous over the last few years. This team for four of the last five years has finished in last place or very close to it. But last year one could see the improvement. They made a big, big trade prior to the draft for Nathan MacKinnon who lives in nearby Cole Harbour, a suburb of Halifax and the same town where Sidney Crosby played his minor hockey. That was a big move. They also drafted in the spring of 2011 another kid - a then-unknown player called Jonathan Drouin. The MacKinnon-Drouin combo continued a week ago when both 17-year olds were selected by Team Canada. It was a first of having any team getting two 17-year olds on Team Canada. But Drouin wanted to play midget and elected not to come to Halifax. In fact rumour was he wanted to play for a Quebec team or even look at the NCAA route. Negotiations continued between Moosehead GM Cam Russell and the Drouin family. One of the thoughts being thrown out by the Moose was "Drouin is an exceptional talent and the kid is not doing himself any favours by staying in midget hockey." Ultimately the Drouin clan got it and realized that Halifax may be the best place to play in the Q. Jonathan Drouin became a Moosehead around a year ago and he has flourished since. "He was good from the start and had exceptional skills and they showed from the beginning," Moosehead GM Cam Russell told TSN.ca. "There are few players who can see all the ice on plays. He is a very rare one." Drouin had a good first rookie season as a 16-year-old but his play picked up in the playoffs. The Mooseheads won the first round but then played the prohibitively favoured Quebec Remparts. It was no contest early as the Remparts took a 3-0 lead and fans were yelling sweep. But not so fast. The Moose werent finished - after all a team must win four games and as they say the fourth is the hardest to win. With Drouin and Nathan MacKinnon, a pair of 16-year olds leading along with some vets and a 16-year old goalie called Zachary Fucale, the Mooseheads started an improbable comeback and on Quebec ice, in Game 7, in overtime Drouin scored the overtime winner. Welcome to the NHL draft project list, Mr. Drouin. Drouins status has been rising since then. He has been enjoying an amazing start to this season and he is averaging two points per game which is the highest in Canada. Then he makes the World Junior team while not going to the summer camp. And now goes from #13 to #4 in Craig Buttons projected draft picks list. So how much further can this story go? That depends on how serious his "Charley-horse injury" is with Team Canada. Time will tell. It may be a couple of games but if he can play against the strong squads you can bet he will and dont be surprised if he continues to produce. He has from the minute hes joined the Mooseheads. It seems like its a story that has more to tell, and maybe even a golden junior ending. For TSN.ca Im Alex J. Walling. Tapp, a third-year arts student from Calgary, was named the most valuable player of the CIS womens hockey championship held at the University of Alberta in Edmonton after she helped the third-seeded Dinos capture the first national title in program history. PHILADELPHIA -- With elimination on the horizon, Martin Brodeur gave New Jersey a reason to stay optimistic. Brodeur stopped 23 shots for his 121st career shutout to keep New Jerseys flickering playoff hopes going with a 3-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night. Ryan Carter, Matt DAgostini and Adam Henrique scored goals to help the Devils snap their 10 game winless streak (0-6-4). "I believe in numbers," Carter said. "They say theres still a chance. So as long as theres still a chance, I still believe." The Devils are six points out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They have five games left and need a lot of help to even think about a post-season berth. For one more night, at least, the Devils still have hope. In a game where 1-0 felt like 5-0 for a team thats struggled to score, Brodeur stood tall in net. He wasnt seriously tested all game but did enough to earn his second shutout of the season. He got his 11th career shutout vs. the Flyers. "I think weve worked so hard without results for a long time now," Brodeur said. "It was a great game again. We got a W for it." With four games left for the Flyers, elimination will come soon enough. The Rangers can officially end Philadelphias post-season chances with a win Friday night. Coach Peter Laviolette had led the Flyers to the playoffs in each of his first three seasons, including a Stanley Cup finals trip in 2010. "It was almost like men playing with kids," Flyers forward Scott Hartnell said. "We lost pretty much every battle." Neither team came out playing with the passion expected in a game badly needed to keep even a scant chance at playing for the Stanley Cup alive. The teams combined for six shots in the first 12 minutes of a plodding first period. The Devils broke through in the second period when Carters wrister beat Ilya Bryzgalov for his fifth goal of the season. Carter took a nice centring pass from Stephen Gionta to beat the Flyers on a 2-on-1 break. His goal ended a New Jersey scoring drought that stretched just over 146 minutes. The Devils lost consecutive 2-0 games coming into Philadelphia.dddddddddddd "I think its a big goal for the morale on this team," Carter said. "Weve been playing well. We havent gotten the result leaving teams with 11 or 12 shots, but losing 2-0. Playing the game you want and not winning is frustrating." Jakub Voracek had a potential tying goal waved off when a video review confirmed he kicked the puck into the net. Bryzgalov kept it 1-0 after the puck shot off the post and knocked off his right skate before he smothered it just outside the crease. Even with the sweet save, the Flyers couldnt build any momentum or generate offence against Brodeur. "I think the biggest problem is, we dont know how to play a patient game," Flyers forward Danny Briere said. Bryzgalovs save came only moments after New Jerseys Andy Greene flattened Hartnell from behind and into the boards. The fans howled in protest for a whistle, but there was no penalty. The hit was replayed a few times on the big screen, which only made the fans more irate a boarding call was missed. DAgostini scored his third goal of the season when he slapped one past Bryzgalov late in the third. Bryzgalov, who declined to talk to the media, stopped 28 shots. Henrique added an empty-netter in the final minutes. By then, Brodeur had sealed it with a flawless effort. "We had to start with one and it took us a while to get it," Brodeur said. "Were really happy and well enjoy this." The Devils played without captain Bryce Salvador (right wrist) and Ilya Kovalchuk (right shoulder). The Devils hadnt won since Kovalchuk was injured on March 23. Kovalchuk is still second on the Devils with 27 points. "It seems like its been a long time, so Im glad for the guys," Devils coach Peter DeBoer said. "Thats the kind of effort weve been putting out for a while now, but didnt get rewarded." Notes: The Devils went 4-1 in the season series. ... Devils D Anton Volchenkov also sat out because of a suspension. ... The Devils had not gone winless in 11 straight games since 1990-91. ... The Flyers had scored 11 goals over the last two games. ' ' '
