ST. Patrick Willis Black Jersey . LOUIS -- Even Pittsburgh third baseman Pedro Alvarez was starting to lose focus in the later stages of the Pirates 6-3, 19-inning win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. "I was getting a little stagnant out there," he said. "Its one of those things where its mind over matter. Youve just got to fight and keep that desire going." Alvarez played a big role in ending the marathon with his 23rd homer of the season. The drive broke a 3-3 tie as the Pirates won the longest game in the majors this season. It took 6 hours, 7 minutes to finish, trying the longest contest by time, matching a game between Baltimore and Boston on May 6. Both teams scored a run in the 17th, and each club used eight pitchers. Alvarez slammed the go-ahead homer off Barret Browning (1-3). Andrew McCutchen added a two-run single later in the inning. Wandy Rodriguez (8-12), who was set to start for the Pirates on Monday night at San Diego, got the win with two scoreless innings of relief. It was his first win as a reliever in 232 major league appearances. "That was a backyard tug-of-war," Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. "We kept playing defence, we kept pitching. At the end of the day, we finally got some separation in the 19th inning. About 9,000 fans from the original crowd of 43,412 stayed until the end. Each team had played a marathon in recent years. St. Louis went 20 innings against the Mets on April 17, 2010, and Pittsburgh played 19 innings at Atlanta on July 26, 2011. The Pirates improved to 4-0 in extra innings this season. They moved two games ahead of St. Louis in the race for the last wild card spot in the NL. The Cardinals have lost three of four overall. "It was a battle all around on both sides," McCutchen said. "They came to play and we were just able to get the win. It feels good." Alvarez picked on a slider from Browning and drove it 408 feet. "It felt good out of my hand," Browning said. "It just stayed up. It dont think Ive ever been this disappointed. I just didnt do my job." Both teams ran out of position players after the 18th inning. Garrett Jones gave Pittsburgh a short-lived 3-2 lead with a bases-loaded infield single in the 17th. He drove in pitcher James McDonald, who singled as a pinch-hitter, the first of his career. "It was just luck," McDonald said. "You know how hard pinch hitting is? So it was pretty much luck." But St. Louis came right back to tie it on a sacrifice fly by Tony Cruz that brought in pinch-runner Ryan Jackson. Yadier Molina and Skip Schumaker began the 17th inning with singles. St. Louis left-hander Jaime Garcia, sidelined for 64 days with a strain in his pitching shoulder, struck out a career-high 10 and did not allow an earned run in an eight-inning, 107-pitch stint. He gave up five hits, two unearned runs and did not walk a batter. Pittsburgh had a pair of hits in the 16th but Molina threw out Jose Tabata trying to steal and reliever Joe Kelly induced McCutchen to ground out to end the inning. Reliever Edward Mujica got Neil Walker to ground into a double play to end the 11th. Kelly allowed four hits and one run in 5 2-3 innings of his first relief appearance. Carlos Beltran put St. Louis in front with a two-run double in the fourth, and also stole three bases, tying a career high. Beltran leads the NL with 85 RBIs. "Twenty innings or nine innings, a loss is a loss," Beltran said. "We had the opportunities. It just didnt happen." Pittsburgh starter Jeff Karstens gave up two runs and two hits over seven innings. He struck four and walked one. The Pirates scored twice in the sixth to tie it on a pair of infield singles and Garcias throwing error. Clint Barmes reached on an infield hit and Garcia mishandled a bunt attempt by Karstens. Josh Harrison drove in Barmes with a sacrifice fly and McCutchen followed with an infield single. Chris Resop led the Pirates bullpen effort with three scoreless innings. Kevin Correia and Jared Hughes added two scoreless innings each. Hurdle said he has yet to select a starting pitcher to replace Rodriguez on Monday. "Ill come up with something tomorrow," he said. HAMILTON, Ont. -- Scott Piercy is discovering that not everything you dislike is bad for you. After two birdie-filled rounds at the RBC Canadian Open, Piercy found himself holding a share of the midway lead with William McGirt. And hed seen just about enough of Hamilton Golf and Country Club. "I will tell you this golf course takes the juices out of it for me," Piercy said Friday after he and McGirt matched the tournaments 36-hole scoring record. It was an unexpected comment from a player who has slept on a lead just six times in his PGA Tour career -- including twice this week. After matching Hamiltons course record with an opening-round 62 on Thursday, Piercy followed it up with a 67 to join McGirt (66) at 11-under 129. That was one shot better than Robert Garrigus (66), two ahead of Bo Van Pelt (66) and three up on Vijay Singh (67), Tim Clark (62) and Josh Teater (65). Piercy had a relatively easy time getting around the classic H.S. Colt design over the first two days, but didnt like the path he had to travel to do it. The tight, tree-lined layout demands precision off the tee and often forces players to play it safe. "This golf is boring golf for me," said Piercy. "Im not going for it, Im not trying to put my foot on the accelerator. Im kind of touch and go." McGirt was in much better spirits than his fellow co-leader after a round that included a 50-foot birdie putt from the fringe on No. 8. The second-year tour player is chasing his first victory and hes anxious to see how his game holds up over the pressure of the weekend. "There are still 36 holes left," said McGirt. "There is a lot of golf left." Even though none of Fridays afternoon starters could match the score posted by Piercy and McGirt, a handful of more experienced players started to make their presence felt on the leaderboard. Van Pelt sent up a roar from the gallery after holing out from 143 yards for eagle on No. 9 -- his last of the day -- while Clark reeled off six birdies and added a holed-out eagle of his own to match the course record with a 62. "It was obviously a great day for me," said Clark, a former winner on the Canadian Tour. "Im excited. It is nice to be back up in Canada, I have some good memories up here. The course suits me well, too, and Ive enjoyed playing." Alsoo lurking was Singh, who is looking for his first PGA Tour victory in four years. Patrick Willis White Jersey. . Five Canadian players survived the cut led by David Hearn of Brantford, Ont., who shot a second straight 68 and is seven shots back. Matt McQuillan (67) of Kingston, Ont., amateur Albin Choi (68) of Toronto, Graham DeLaet (69) of Weyburn, Sask., and Matt Hill (69) of Brights Grove, Ont., will also be around for the weekend. Hearn was left hoping the course would start playing a bit tougher in the final two rounds. "I was steady again today, I just didnt make quite as many birdies as I would have liked," he said. "Im certainly not out of reach for this tournament -- guys are shooting 62s and 63s. If I was to get hot tomorrow and put one of those in, you never know whatll happen." The week came to an abrupt end for British Open champion Ernie Els, who earned loud cheers wherever he went but missed the cut with rounds of 72 and 70. The South African was disappointed he couldnt reward the fans with a performance like he put on at Royal Lytham & Ste. Annes last weekend. "Its unfortunate I didnt have my game with me," said Els. "Theres always next time." The scoring has been better at Hamilton than the last two times the Canadian Open was held here. Rain left the greens soft and receptive, and gave players the opportunity to lift, clean and place their balls in the fairway for both rounds. With more rain expected early Saturday, a compressed third round will be played with threesomes going off both tees. Even though Piercy hasnt found the course to his liking so far, he acknowledged that a good showing could change his outlook on the place. "If I win, Ill have a lot of fun," said Piercy. "Hopefully the next two days go well. ... Its fun at the end of the week when you put it together." Notes:@ Chez Reavie (2008) and Scott Dunlap (1996) were previously at 129 midway through the Canadian Open ... Mike Weir of Brights Grove, Ont., will miss the weekend at the event for the third straight year after consecutive 72s ... Other notables to miss the cut included Jim Furyk, Paul Casey, David Duval and Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford, B.C., the low Canadian at the event the last two years ... The winners share of the US$5.2-million tournament will be $936,000. ' ' '
