PITTSBURGH -- The heat is on at the Senior Players Championship. Terrell Suggs White Jersey . Fred Couples is taking advantage of it. With sweltering temperatures easing the stiffness in his chronically bad back, the defending champion birdied the final three holes Friday for a 7-under 63 and the second-round lead at Fox Chapel. Couples, the winner last year at Westchester Country Club in Harrison, N.Y., reached 11 under on a day when the temperature reached 96 degrees with a heat index of 105. "The heat helps," said Couples, the 1992 Masters champion. "I have some heat on my back to start the day, and then being hot and humid certainly was a good thing." Couples has complained about stiffness all week, saying his back is sore after receiving his regular anti-inflammatory injections two weeks ago. His game hasnt shown it. Couples has one bogey through two rounds, has birdied the two par-5 holes both days and has hit 34 of 36 greens. He birdied four of the first six holes and closed the same way, with birdies at 13, 16, 17 and 18. "It was a great day full of a lot of good shots, but a couple long putts were made," Couples said. "Any time youre going to shoot a low round on a course that I think is like this, youre going to have to do that." He won the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic in March for his seventh victory on the 50-and-over tour. Joe Daley was a stroke back after a 64. He leads the field with 16 birdies during the tournament thus far. Dating to his previous start at the Senior PGA Championship in May, Daley is a combined 22 under in his past four rounds. He finished 66-64 (12 under) at the Senior PGA Championship to climb into a tie for fourth. "Why not?" Daley said when asked if he went into the tournament thinking there were that many birdie opportunities available. "Why limit yourself? You have to have the right mindset." Tom Lehman, the Regions Tradition winner in his last start, was third at 7 under after a 66. He extended his streak of consecutive rounds in the 60s to 10. Mark Calcavecchia, coming off a victory Sunday in the Montreal Championship, was 6 under along with Bill Glasson, Michael Allen and Jay Don Blake. Calcavecchia and Blake shot 65, Glasson had a 67, and Allen a 68. Olin Browne had a tournament-record 62 to reach 5 under. After putting 35 times in opening with a 73 Thursday, the reigning U.S. Senior Open champion drove to nearby Oakmont Country Club to work on his putting. Oakmont will host its record ninth U.S. Open in 2016. "Obviously, that paid off a little bit," Browne said after putting 28 times in the second round. "I got a couple good bounces. When I mis-hit a shot, it covered the bump and got up there close and I was able to take advantage of that. It was just one of those days where I hit the ball pretty well but when I didnt hit it well, I got a good bounce and it went my way." Glasson posted his second consecutive four-birdie round of 67, and Calcavecchia made a late charge up the leaderboard by birdying the final three holes to move into a tie for fourth. "I didnt drive particularly well, but it seemed like the holes that I missed fairways we had back pins, so it allowed me to kind of chase the ball on the greens," Glasson said. "So had they been front pins, I would have had a hard time today." First-round leader Bruce Vaughan was 2 under. He followed a 64 with a 74 that included seven bogeys. Fred Funk, second after the first round, was 3 under after a 72. Tom Watson also was 3 under after a 67. Hes returning from a wrist injury that sidelined him since April. Greg Norman was 1 over after a 74. Hes playing his first Champions Tour event since 2009 The tournament is the third of five Champions Tour majors. Corey Graham Jersey .J. -- Dave DeGuglielmo made it clear that if it were up to him, there would be no rotation at left guard on the New York Jets offensive line. Dennis Pitta Elite Jersey . Pedro Alvarez provided the power. The reeling Pittsburgh Pirates eagerly accepted both. http://www.nflproshopravens.com/haloti-ngata-jerseys . Diogu averaged 5.7 points and 4.3 rebounds in three preseason games. The former Arizona State player has played 225 games in six seasons in the NBA with Golden State, Indiana, Portland, Sacramento, the Los Angeles Clippers and San Antonio, averaging 6. Terrell Suggs Vapor Jersey . Jacksons suspension began immediately. He will be able to apply for reinstatement in exactly one year. This is Jacksons third drugs-related suspension, the previous two coming during his five seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The 2007 fourth-round pick was banished for four games in 2009 and for 12 months starting in September 2010. Torrey Smith Purple Jersey .C. -- Despite the Galaxys dreadful start to the 2012 campaign, the Vancouver Whitecaps wont be taking anything for granted when they visit Los Angeles on Saturday.MEDINAH, Ill. -- Graeme McDowell knew it was a mistake as soon as he glanced up at the scoreboard. That comfortable lead Europe had taken into the singles matches two years ago was gone, erased in a flurry of American birdies. Instead of coasting into the victory party as hed expected as the 12th man out, the Ryder Cup -- to say nothing of Europes pride and honour -- was in McDowells hands. "Those last seven holes, Ive never been so nervous in my life," McDowell recalled Tuesday. "Coming down the stretch that day was some of the toughest golf I had ever played in my life, and some of the most nerve-racking golf. Myself and Hunter Mahan, someone was going to be the hero and someone was going to be the villain that day. "Thankfully I was able to get the job done." Of course he did. When the Ryder Cup is on the line, the Irish usually do. McDowell delivered the winning point at Celtic Manor with a 15-foot birdie on the 16th hole, joining Darren Clarke, Paul McGinley, Philip Walton and Christy OConnor Jr. as Irish heroes on one of the biggest stages in golf. Dont be surprised if that Irish luck holds this week, too. Though European captain Jose Maria Olazabal refused to give any hints about his lineup, its almost certain McDowell will be playing with world No. 1 Rory McIlroy, his good friend and fellow Northern Irishman, when the Ryder Cup begins Friday at Medinah Country Club. Paired together two years ago, the two were 1-1-1 in team matches. "Hes one of our main men," Olazabal said of McDowell. "He loves this competition, and I think it brings out the best in him. Hes a very gutsy player. It doesnt matter if hes not striking the ball well, he will fight until the very end. He will fight for every shot, for every inch. And we saw that in the past." Not just from McDowell, either. Back in 2006, it was Clarke who carried the Europeans. Playing just six weeks after his wife, Heather, died of breast cancer, Clarke gave the Europeans an emotional charge the Americans never came close to answering. He won all three of his matches, and the Europeans routed the U.S. 18 1/2-9 1/2 for their third straight victory. Four years before that, McGinley made a spectacular save on 18 to snatch a halve from Furyk and take the cup from the Americans. After McGinley had pulled even with a 12-footer on 17, Furyk was only 3 feet away from a certain par -- after a beautiful bunker shot. McGinley, meanwhile, missed the green -- badly. But he made a gorgeous pitch to about 8 feet, and sank thee putt for the halve. Ray Rice Pink Jersey. Back in 1995, the little-known Walton had lost what would be his only other Ryder Cup match, in Saturday morning foursomes. He would go 3-up on Jay Haas with three holes left in singles, only to lose 16 and 17. But Haas was in trouble off the 18th tee, and Walton two-putted for a bogey and the point Europe needed to win the cup, kickstarting its current dominance. The Europeans have won six of the last eight Ryder Cups. And in 1989, OConnor -- a captains pick -- upset Fred Couples by making two birdies on the last three holes. One of the most celebrated shots in Irish golf was OConnor hitting 2-iron from 229 yards to about 4 feet for birdie. It shook Couples so badly that he missed the green with a 9-iron, and it was key to Europe retaining the cup. "The Ryder Cups become such a big deal, I think people love it as a spectacle," McDowell said. "The aftermath (in 2010) and the 17th green when everyone swamped that green, it was something like Ive never seen in golf before, and cool to be part of." McDowell was hardly an unknown at Celtic Manor. Hed been unflappable in winning the U.S. Open just three months earlier, barely blinking as he withstood charges by Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els at Pebble Beach. He wasnt a Ryder Cup rookie, either, going 2-1-1 at Valhalla. But it was his performance in Wales that transformed the 33-year-old -- on and off the course. "Winning the U.S. Open, there was sort of an aftermath of congratulations from everyone. I think that lasted a few weeks," McDowell said. "But the Ryder Cup was something a bit different because that was enjoyed by European fans, the European Tour, anyone that calls themselves European. I think I certainly got recognized more for that putt at the Ryder Cup than I did for my U.S. Open. Theres no doubt about that, certainly in Europe." McDowell hasnt won a tournament since 2010 but hes never far from the conversation, either. Hes made all but four cuts in 22 starts on the PGA and European tours this year, and has five top-five finishes. He settled for second at the U.S. Open after missing a 25-footer to force a playoff, and was fifth at the British after blowing up with a final-round 75. If Olazabal sends him out last again in singles, McDowell will be ready to deliver again. "Where will I play on Sunday? Who knows?" he said. "Part of me would love that opportunity again -- part of me would love it, part of me would hate it. Ill take whatever comes." ' ' ' |
