MIAMI -- It has been a rough start to the season for Ben Zobrist. Atlanta Falcons Gonzalez Jersey . Hes hoping a two-homer game will turn things around. Zobrist drove in four runs Saturday night to lead the Tampa Bay Rays to a 13-4 victory over the Miami Marlins. "Its been a long couple of months for me trying to get things going and hopefully this is a sign of good things to come," Zobrist said. Zobrist went 3 for 3, walked twice, scored four runs, and raised his batting average from .206 to .218. "He obviously had a great game," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. Jose Molina and Elliot Johnson had three RBIs each for the Rays, who have won three straight. Tampa Bay starter Matt Moore (3-5) struck out nine and allowed four runs in six innings. "We did an unbelievable job of when we had someone on they were getting in," Moore said. "It was a lot of fun pitching behind stuff like that." The Marlins have lost the first five games of a nine-game homestand. "We played terrible," Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said. Carlos Zambrano (4-4) allowed seven runs in 2 1-3 innings before leaving with lower back stiffness. Guillen and a trainer tended to Zambrano after he issued a one-out walk in the third. Zambrano was convincing enough to stay in the game despite a 5-0 deficit. Following the visit to the mound, Zambrano immediately surrendered a two-run homer to Zobrist that ended his outing. Zobrists homer, estimated at 379 feet, hit off the facade of the upper deck in right field. "I came in today with some discomfort," Zambrano said. "I had it stretched by the trainers. During the game it was aggravated to the point that I couldnt pitch anymore. I should have said something before." Zobrist connected again to right field in the fifth -- another two-run shot for a 9-0 lead. It was the second multi-home run game of his career. He hit two at Detroit on Sept. 25, 2008. Tampa Bay scored five runs in the second as the first five batters reached base including Johnson with a two-run single. Desmond Jennings, Molina, and Moore also drove in runs in the inning. "During the course of a baseball season youre going to do it right sometimes and sometimes youre going to mess it up," Maddon said. "Tonight we didnt mess it up. We got it right." Justin Ruggiano hit a three-run homer for Miami. NOTES: It was Zambranos shortest start since June 30, 2011 while with the Cubs when he left after an inning due to back soreness against the Giants. ... Rays 3B Evan Longoria (hamstring) successfully ran the bases before the game and is hopeful to begin a rehab assignment soon. "He did fine," Maddon said. "Hes improving all of the time. I guess we will run him again on Tuesday and make a determination. If everything goes well he should be out probably immediately after that." ... There were loud cheers during the game from fans watching the Heat-Celtics Game 7 on TVs throughout the stadium. ... Before the game, the wives of Marlins and Rays players met in a charity softball game to benefit Shake-A-Leg Miami and Autism Speaks, Tampa Bay Charter with the Rays winning 14-2. "We have a very athletic group of young ladies here," Maddon said. ... Tampa Bay will send RHP James Shields (6-4, 4.27 ERA) to the mound Sunday in the series finale against RHP Anibal Sanchez (3-4, 3.19 ERA), who is coming off his worst outing of the season allowing seven runs in an 11-0 loss to the Braves on June 5. Youth Tony Gonzalez Jersey . The San Antonio Spurs were ahead 36 points and he didnt want Gregg Popovich to end his night just yet. Asante Samuel Jersey . A scrambling Cutler took a helmet-to-helmet hit from Tim Dobbins after unleashing a pass on third down at midfield late in the first half Sunday night. http://www.shopnflfalconsgear.com/tony-gonzalez-jersey/ . Kendrick pitched effectively for 6 2-3 innings and Jimmy Rollins drove in a pair of runs to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-2 victory over the Washington Nationals on Friday night. Deion Sanders Falcons Jersey . Linebacker Marcellus Bowman could be back in the lineup for the first time this season when Winnipeg meets the Montreal Alouettes this Friday. Julio Jones Jersey . Hingis, a winner of five Grand Slam singles titles, won consecutive singles titles in Canada in 1999 and 2000, the latter tournament in Montreal. The 31-year-old Swiss great addressed the Uniprix Stadium crowd in French, attributing her improved skills in the language to lessons from her husband, show jumper Thibault Hutin. ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Angels are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Zack Greinke, the latest addition to their All-Star rotation. Dan Haren has a pretty good idea how Greinke is going to feel when he makes his Angels debut. Haren allowed five hits in six-plus innings and struck out six in a 3-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night, hours after Los Angeles acquired Greinke in a trade that sent rookie shortstop Jean Segura and Double-A pitchers Ariel Pena and Johnny Hellweg to Milwaukee. The 2009 AL Cy Young Award winner is scheduled to start Sunday for the Angels. "Hes a guy Ive admired for a while. Hes the definition of electric stuff -- which is the opposite of me," Haren said after winning his second straight start since coming off the disabled list. "My game is more command, and his game is command and having a wide arsenal of pitches. Ive seen him throw many times, and its going to be exciting when he comes in here and throws that first game. I remember I was really excited when I did here, so Im sure hes going to be amped up." Jeff Keppinger had three hits in three at-bats against Haren, including a home run in the second and a leadoff double in the seventh that made him 7 for 14 against the right-hander. Haren faced one more batter after that, issuing his only walk of the game to Carlos Pena. Kevin Jepsen retired Ryan Roberts and Jose Lobaton on fly balls before striking out Elliot Johnson. "At that point, theres not a whole lot of leeway. So you just go after guys," Jepsen said. "Thats the thing about coming on in the late innings -- anytime you have a bad outing, youre spoiling somebody elses good outing. But you cant think about that. Once you get the first out, then youve got to bear down on the second guy. And when you get three outs and they tell you your nights over, you take a deep breath." Tampa Bay got four other runners as far as second base, but came up empty each time and finished 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position. The Rays are batting .183 in those situations since the All-Star break. "Weve talked about it. Its the same story. The opportunities are out there. We just have to do better," manager Joe Maddon said. "I felt good about Ryan hitting under those circumstances, and I thought Lopie had a really good at-bat, too. Jepsen looked like he was a little more frisky than he had been in the past, a little more aggressive, and he did a nice job." Albert Pujols had three hits, including a two-run double, to help the Angels snap a six-game losing streak against the Rays. Scott Downs pitched a scoreless eighth and Ernesto Frieri worked a perfect ninth for his 12th save in as many opportunities. Alex Cobb (4-8) gave up three runs and eight hits in seven innings withoutt walking a batter. Black Jones Jersey. The 24-year-old right-hander, returning to the site of his first major league victory last June, left his previous start last Saturday against Seattle after two innings because of a bruised right leg. He is 1-5 with a 6.25 ERA in six starts since pitching two-hit ball over seven innings in a 3-0 victory against the Marlins on June 17. The Angels had runners at the corners in the first when pitching coach Jim Hickey went out to talk with Cobb after just 17 pitches and a 1-0 count on Mark Trumbo -- who then grounded into an inning-ending double play. "Jims really good at coming out and taking your mind off everything and focus on one particular thing," Cobb said. "Hes got a good feel. He knows when things are speeding up out there on the mound and getting out of hand, and they were. He saw me getting under the ball a little bit, so he told me: This is a good double-play candidate, so keep the ball down and make him hit it on the ground." The Angels scored all their runs and grabbed a 3-1 lead in the third with four consecutive two-out hits, including Pujols two-run double off the glove of a diving Sam Fuld in left field and an RBI single by Trumbo. AL batting leader Mike Trout started the rally with a single before Torii Hunter reached on a perfectly placed bunt single between third base and the mound. "When you get two outs, you need to close the inning down," Cobb said. "Im not too mad about the bunt. Im more mad about getting behind on Trout and putting him in a hitters count. But overall I felt good. Ive been struggling the last couple of games with my fastball command, and I felt that was there tonight. I was able to get ahead most of the game, and when youre in the drivers seat, it makes pitching a lot easier." Keppinger opened the scoring in the second with his fourth homer, marking the seventh straight start in which Haren has given up a home run. It was the 18th allowed by the three-time All-Star in his 19 starts, just two fewer than he served up in 34 starts last year. "They came out really aggressive," Haren said. "They had a first-pitch homer by Keppinger, and they were swinging early. So I went primarily to softer stuff, just to get them off balance. We scratched out a couple of runs and the bullpen did great." Downs retired pinch-hitter Brooks Conrad with two on in the eighth. NOTES: Tampa Bay sold the signing rights of 1B-OF Brandon Allen to the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks of the Japanese Central League. The Rays acquired him off waivers from Oakland on April 19. ... Joyce is 0 for 13 against Haren, and Zobrist is 3 for 24. ... The Rays six-game errorless streak is their longest this season and four shy of the franchise record. But they have committed 76 errors, three more than they had in 2011. ' ' ' |
