ATLANTA -- The Phillies have started to win again, but Cole Hamels cautions this still isnt the kind of team that can "steamroll" opponents the way they have in recent seasons. Vince Wilfork Jersey . Hamels predicts more close games ahead for Philadelphia, just like Tuesday night when John Mayberry Jr. doubled and scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and the Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves 4-2. The Phillies (12-12), the five-time defending NL East champions, have won five of seven to return to .500 after finishing April at 11-12 for their first losing record in a full month since going 11-15 in June 2009. "I still think we have a lot of work to do," said Hamels, who gave up two runs in six innings, leaving with the game tied 2-2. "We just have to keep battling. Things arent going to come easy. Sometimes we have months in the past where things just seemed like they were easy because it seemed like we could just steamroll through a team. Its not going to be that case anymore." Hamels said other teams in the NL East "are just too good" and the Phillies are missing injured stars Ryan Howard and Chase Utley. "Weve got injuries and weve got to battle through and just kind of play harder than weve been accustomed to," Hamels said. "Hopefully the easy wins will come, but I dont think there will be that many in store." The Phillies are starting a stretch of nine straight games against NL East rivals. "This is where we can make up our ground," Hamels said. "Hopefully this can kind of spark us into being the team that we know were capable of being and what everybody obviously expects us to be. Were playing against better teams and teams that have better records than us and we have to change that and start getting momentum back on our side and things will flow a lot easier." After Brandon Beachy gave up only two runs in seven innings to outlast Hamels, the Phillies broke a 2-2 tie with two runs against left-hander Jonny Venters (2-1). Mayberry, in the game as a pinch-hitter, doubled to right with one out, moved to third on Jimmy Rollins single and scored on Venters wild pitch to Placido Polanco. Shane Victorino added an infield hit and Pence singled to right, driving in Rollins for a 4-2 lead. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said the bloop double could be a spark for Mayberry, who was hitting only .204. "Thats getting the job done, thats a big hit, an important hit," Manuel said. "A blooper can definitely get you going. Sometimes thats one of the best feelings in baseball, I think." Antonio Bastardo (1-1) pitched a perfect seventh. Jonathan Papelbon earned his ninth save by retiring the Braves in order in the ninth. Venters gave up four hits and two runs, the first he has allowed in 10 games, while recording two outs. "Brandon pitched his butt off," Venters said. "For me to give it away like that is unacceptable. "I left some sinkers up in the zone and they dont miss those pitches." Rollins and Pence each had two hits. "Theyre missing a couple big pieces but thats still a formidable lineup theyre throwing out there every day," Beachy said. The Phillies took a 2-0 lead in the fourth. Polanco singled and moved to third on a double by Pence with two outs. Ty Wigginton followed with a single which skipped past left fielder Martin Prado. Pence ran past third base before Prados error, so Wigginton, who advanced to third, was credited with two RBIs. After Brian McCanns homer in the fourth, the Braves pulled even with one run off Hamels in the sixth. Singles by Freddie Freeman and Matt Diaz and a walk to McCann loaded the bases. Freeman scored from third on Juan Franciscos flyball to left field. Beachy gave up five hits and two runs in seven innings. The Braves helped Beachy with two strong defensive plays in the seventh. Tyler Pastornicky made a diving grab of Pences line drive to open the inning. Matt Diaz, running at full speed, then caught Wiggintons liner at the right-field wall. NOTES: The Phillies placed RHP David Herndon on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation and called up RHP Brian Sanches from Triple A Lehigh Valley. Herndon was having tests on the elbow in Philadelphia. ... Braves RF Jason Heyward was held out for the second straight day with soreness around his right oblique muscle, and he said he may not play on Wednesday. 3B Chipper Jones, also held out, has started only 12 of 24 games. ... Phillies RHP Roy Halladay, who is 4-1 in his career against Atlanta, will start in Wednesday nights game against Braves RHP Tommy Hanson. Wes Welker White Jersey . Off-Season Game Plan looks at Stars roster and what moves could help them bid for a playoff spot next season. While the Stars missed the postseason, their minus-11 goal differential was the best among non-playoff clubs last season, so they arent necessarily that far away. Danny Woodhead Jersey . Repersenting Canada in singles are Milos Raonic of Thornhill, ON, Vasek Pospisil of Vancouver, BC, Stephanie Dubois of Laval, QC, and Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, QC. Raonic returns to Wimbledon one year removed from suffering a hip injury that kept him out for three months after he took a spill on the famed grass courts at the All-England Club in the second round. http://www.nflpatriotsfansstore.com/nike-vince-wilfork-Patriots-jersey/ . The 22-year-old Urso was pronounced dead in August at Grant Medical Center after collapsing at a downtown Columbus bar and restaurant. Franklin County Coroner Jan Gorniak said Friday that Urso died of arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy. Wes Welker Youth Jersey . From the rafters, he sat helpless as he watched his New Jersey Devils lose a tough road opener in this Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Flyers in overtime. Rob Gronkowski Game Jersey . In a letter to council, a spokesman for Oilers owner Daryl Katz says it makes more sense to hash out those issues in private with city bureaucrats before meeting publicly with Mayor Stephen Mandel and council. "While we appreciate the mayors invitation, we do not think such a meeting can be productive until we have reduced the outstanding issues," John Karvellas, a vice-president for the Katz Group, said in the three-sentence press release posted on the Oilers website. ST. LOUIS -- Jaime Garcia is in fine form for the post-season, winning his last three starts and homering off Bronson Arroyo, too. The St. Louis Cardinals are almost there, clinching a tie for the second NL wild card and spoiling Dusty Bakers return from a mini-stroke with a 4-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night. "Im excited," Garcia said. "Its a huge win for us." After winning for the 11th time in 14 games, the defending World Series champions stayed at Busch Stadium more than two hours after the final pitch to watch the Dodgers snap a ninth-inning tie and beat the Giants 3-2 to avoid elimination. The plan for a late-night delayed victory party had been somewhat muted, with five cases of champagne on ice instead of the usual overkill of 20 cases of champagne and 20 cases of beer. A loss by the Dodgers or another Cardinals win would wrap up a playoff spot for St. Louis and a visit to Atlanta for the wild-card game Friday. Both teams have two games to go. "Its different with this one-game playoff looming over our heads if we get there," second baseman Daniel Descalso said. "I wouldnt expect a raucous celebration but, you know, some celebration is in order if we do clinch it." First-year manager Mike Matheny and general manager John Mozeliak, dress shoes propped on an end table, watched the game in the managers office. "One step closer," Matheny said. "Too early to start going there." Arroyo (12-10) threw 73 pitches while allowing three runs over five innings in a tuneup for the post-season after learning beforehand from Baker that he wouldnt go deep into the game. Arroyo topped 200 innings for the seventh time but is 0-3 in his last four starts. "He talked to us about going shorter, but it doesnt matter, it doesnt take the sting out of it," Arroyo said. "We could be 160-0 and a loss is a loss is a loss. It sits there on the back of my baseball card until I die." The Reds are 96-64, tied with the Nationals for the best record in the National League with two games to go, and must finish ahead of Washington to get home-field advantage throughout the post-season after losing the season series. More important at this point is getting to the post-season fresh. Baker made it a point to get work foor relievers Alfredo Simon and J. Ryan Wendell Jersey. J. Hoover, both of whom hadnt pitched lately. "It was a matter of trying to win the game, but trying to get your guys fresh at the same time," Baker said. "Right now, were about preservation and conservation." Baker missed 11 games, including the NL Central clincher and Homer Baileys no-hitter, while recovering from a stroke in a Chicago hospital that he had while being treated for an irregular heartbeat. He appeared noticeably fatigued after the game and spoke briefly. Garcia (7-7) made it 5 for 5 at the plate against Arroyo when he led off the third with a drive that just cleared the right-field wall for his second career homer, although the perfect run ended when he flied out to end the fourth. "I knew. Im not going to lie to you. I faced him the last couple years and I knew I was 4 for 4," Garcia said. "Hes a really good pitcher and he made a mistake and I put a good swing on the ball." Allen Craig and Yadier Molina added an RBI apiece in a three-run third, and Descalso had an RBI triple in the sixth that made it 4-1. Jason Motte worked a perfect ninth with two strikeouts for his 41st save in 48 chances. Garcia gave up six hits, including three singles in a span of four at-bats in the third, with Brandon Phillips getting an RBI. Scott Rolen doubled, advanced on a passed ball and scored on Ryan Hanigans sacrifice fly in the seventh. The lefty has been a major asset at home throughout his career, going 20-11 with a 2.48 ERA at Busch Stadium, the lowest career mark of any pitcher with 10 or more starts, including 4-2 with a 2.82 ERA in nine starts this year. Hes 3-5 with a 5.02 ERA in 11 road starts this year and 14-12 with a 4.47 ERA overall. NOTES: Arroyo has allowed 26 homers, tied for third-most in the NL with Bailey and fellow Reds pitcher Mike Leake. ... Ryan Ludwick returned to the Cincinnati lineup after missing eight games with left groin tightness but was removed in a double switch in the sixth. ... Reds pitchers combined for seven strikeouts to set a franchise record with 1,231, breaking the mark of 1,227 in 2008. ... Motte has all of the Cardinals saves. The franchise has never gone a season with just one pitcher getting all of the saves. ' ' '
