LOS ANGELES -- Balanced scoring, strong third periods -- like this one against the Los Angeles Kings -- and the dependable goaltending of Tim Thomas have given the Boston Bruins reason enough to think they can successfully defend their Stanley Cup title. Torrey Smith Elite Jersey . Milan Lucic and Chris Kelly scored less than 1 1/2 minutes apart early in the third period to break open a tie game, Patrice Bergeron scored a short-handed goal and Thomas made 40 saves, leading the Bruins to a 4-2 victory over the Kings on Saturday night. "Weve matured as a team and weve been able to gain that killer instinct thats so key to success -- especially in the third period," Lucic said. "We look forward to the challenge of playing in the third period, and thats why weve had success. Timmy was huge. He made big saves at key times and kept it close for us. Thats why hes an elite goaltender. We have a lot of trust and faith in him to step up." The Bruins ended a four-game road losing streak and also snapped a six-game winning streak by the Kings, who fell out of first place in the Pacific Division with Dallas victory over Calgary. Colin Fraser and rookie Slava Voynov scored for Los Angeles and Jonathan Quick stopped 22 shots. "We know the situation were in. Were battling with a bunch of other teams here to make the post-season, or win our division," Kings defenceman Willie Mitchell said. "Were just preparing every game the same way -- like its a must-win. Its never good to lose this time of year, thats for sure. But we saw last year in the playoffs, when Thomas is on his game, what he can do for that team." The Northeast Division-leading Bruins are second in the Eastern Conference, 12 points behind the New York Rangers with eight games left on the schedule. The last defending Stanley Cup champion to lead its conference in points the following season was New Jersey, which captured the top seed in the East in 2000-01. The Bruins, who have a 36-goal advantage over their opponents in the third period, broke a 1-all tie when David Krejci carried the puck into the Kings zone and left a drop pass for Lucic, who beat Quick between the pads with a wrist shot from the middle of the right circle at 4:37 of the period for his 24th goal. "Weve been approaching that third period the same way for so long, I cant give you the formula. We just go out and do it," Thomas said. "Maybe thats part of it. Were not overthinking it." Kelly added his 19th of the season at the 5:56 mark for a 3-1 lead. Brian Rolston carried the puck from his own zone into the Kings end and passed to Benoit Pouliot, whose cross-ice feed to Kelly went in off his left skate. The officials let the goal stand after a brief replay viewing. One more goal by Kelly would give the Bruins six players with 20 or more goals in the same season for the first time since 1995-96. "Thats whats necessary," Thomas said. "We dont have maybe the superstar snipers like some teams have, so we need that balanced scoring and a well-rounded attack to be successful. Last year in the Cup run, if you look at who was scoring some very important goals for us, it wasnt always the names that youd think -- especially in the first series against Montreal." Voynov cut it to 3-2 at 14:46 of the third with his seventh goal, but Brad Marchand scored into an empty net in the final second. "Obviously, we knew the meaning of this game, and it was really a tough game," said Bruins captain Zdeno Chara, who played in his 1,000th regular-season game. "Both teams played really hard -- a lot of battles, a lot of physicality -- and both goalies made big saves. I thought we played desperate hockey for the whole game. We were blocking shots, did a decent job killing penalties and scored some big goals." The Kings had allowed only one short-handed goal all season until Bergeron opened the scoring at 5:18 of the second period, while Rolston was off for holding Dustin Brown. Los Angeles defenceman Drew Doughty turned the puck over to Marchand and Quick made a toe save on Marchands 15-foot backhander, but was out of position when Bergeron slammed the rebound into a wide-open net for his 20th goal. Los Angeles had 15 shots on net in the first period, but didnt get another one until the 11:26 mark of the second, when Thomas turned aside Browns 35-foot slap shot. But Fraser tied it less than 2 minutes later with his second goal of the season, getting a cross-ice pass from Doughty in the slot and beating Thomas to the stick side with a 25-foot wrist shot. "We had a lot of opportunities, but you have to finish the job when you have them against a team like that," Kings coach Darryl Sutter said. "Theyve got the goaltender that was the most valuable player in the league last year at the most important time. And he was tonight, too." Notes: The Kings are 52-116-5 with 23 ties against teams who were defending a Stanley Cup title -- including a 3-0 loss at Boston on Dec. 13, when Tuukka Rask made 41 saves against Los Angeles in the Kings first game after the firing of coach Terry Murray. ... Boston is 34-0-0 when holding a two-goal lead at any point of the game. ... The Bruins havent shut out the Kings in Los Angeles since Jan. 3, 1976, when Dave Reece beat them 3-0 for the second and last shutout of his 14-game NHL career. ... Bostons only power play came after Justin Williams was sent off for roughing at 17:32 of the first period. The Bruins have had fewer than three power-play opportunities in nine of their last 10 games. ... Williams played in his 700th regular-season game. Ed Reed Youth Jersey . The Jays go with righty Kyle Drabek, while the Royals counter with Luke Hochevar. Drabek, who was taken 18th overall in 2006, came to Toronto in the December 2009 trade that sent Roy Halladay to Philadelphia and won four decisions in his initial 21 appearances - 17 starts - in 2010-11. Vonta Leach Jersey . The three-time All-Star outfielder, on the disabled list for the seventh time in the last four years, jogged around Progressive Field before Cleveland played the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday. http://www.shopthebaltimoreravens.com/terrell-suggs-jerseys . -- American Chip Lutz carded a final round 4-under 68 on Friday to capture the 2012 Canadian mens senior championship at Golf Griffon des Sources. Haloti Ngata Womens Jersey .Y. -- Interim coach Mike Woodson says Jeremy Lin will not play in the Knicks first-round series against Miami, even if they avoid elimination Wednesday. Joe Flacco Youth Jersey . The Canucks, who lead the division by 14 points over Colorado, have won three straight and have recorded at least a point in eight straight outings (6-0-2). Vancouver has suffered just two regulation losses during the 2012 calendar year, posting a 10-2-3 mark since the beginning of January. Carolina released 15-year NFL veteran kicker Olindo Mare on Monday just one year after giving him a four-year, $12 million contract. They also parted ways with punter Nick Harris, an 11-year NFL veteran who was signed as a free agent earlier this off-season. Justin Medlock, a journeyman kicker who last played for the CFLs Hamilton Tiger-Cats, appears to have won the kicking job. The Panthers went with rookie sixth-round draft pick Brad Nortman as their new punter. "Both of those decisions at kicker were very difficult," Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said. "In both situations we felt like we had two young kickers with strong legs who had very good training camps. So did Olindo and Nick, but we made a decision to go with the younger guys based on their performances." The Panthers also placed cornerback Brandon Hogan on injured reserve for the second straight year after he underwent arthroscopic knee surgery last Friday. Wide receiver David Gettis, who has missed all of training camp with a hamstring injury, was placed on the physically unable to perform list with a hamstring injury. Gettis was hoping to battle for the No. 3 receiver spot after missing all of last season with a torn ACL. Gettis can be activated to the 53-man roster after the sixth week of the season. The team also waived wide receivers Darvin Adams, Rico Wallace, Brenton Bersin and Michael Avila, running backs Josh Vaughan and Lyndon Rowells, tight end Greg Smith, guards Will Blackwell and Roger Allen, and defensive end Eric Norwood, a former fourth-round draft pick from South Carolina. Mare had the unenviable task of replacing veteran kicker John Kasay, who was cut last season after spending all 16 years with the team. Mare connected on 22 of 28 on field goals attempts last year but had two key misses in losses to Atlanta and Minnesota. With a chance to send tthe game into overtime he pushed a 31-yard field goal wide left in the closing seconds resulting in a 24-21 loss to the Vikings. Dennis Pitta Jersey. A few weeks later he missed a 36-yarder against the Falcons in another late-game situation. The Panthers still must pay Mare $3 million, the remaining portion of his signing bonus. But Medlock, who also played in the CFL with Edmonton and Toronto, is a much cheaper alternative in terms of base salary. Hes set to make the league minimum of $390,000. Mares base salary would have been $2.1 million this year. Mares departure doesnt come as a surprise. The kicking battle had been one of the most competitive in training camp and Medlock appeared to have edged ahead because of his ability to make longer field goals. Mare struggled on kicks around 50 yards out, while Medlock had plenty of leg to get it there. The big question for the Panthers was if Medlock could handle the pressure of kicking in a game. He was perfect during the preseason. Medlock was drafted in the fifth round in 2007 by the Kansas City Chiefs and was 1 of 2 on his field goal attempts before being waived. He hasnt attempted a field goal in the league since. However, hes performed well in the CFL. He earned a tryout with the Panthers after connecting on 49 of 55 field goals last season for the Tiger-Cats, including a 57-yarder. "That was one of the big things that attracted us to Justin is he had a strong leg," Hurney said. "He was a highly touted kicker coming out of UCLA. But sometimes it takes kickers awhile to gain some experience. He went to Canada and really did a nice job there and we decided to bring him in." Hurney said running back Jonathan Stewart will be listed as "day-to-day" after injuring his ankle during Sunday nights preseason game against the New York Jets. X-rays on the ankle were negative but its unlikely Stewart will play in Thursdays preseason finale at Pittsburgh. ' ' ' |
