PORTLAND, Ore. Cary Williams Jersey . -- The late insertion of Darren Mattocks made all the difference for the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night. Mattocks scored in the 84th minute -- just a minute after being put on the pitch -- as the Whitecaps earned a 1-1 draw against the rival Portland Timbers. Vancouver manager Marin Rennie put Eric Hassli in in the 72nd minute, hoping to jumpstart an offence that slowed dramatically after an early second half flurry. Mattocks followed Hassli on to the pitch 11 minutes later and the two forwards connected to score the key goal. "Hats off to coach Rennie for putting me and Eric in together at the end of the game," said Mattocks. "(Hassli) is the big guy who holds up the ball and Im the short, speedy guy who finishes those combinations." Mattocks played down a Hassli header, eluded a Portland defender and emphatically shot with his right foot. The rookies goal was his first in Major League Soccer, securing a valuable draw on the road. "I really believe we deserved that goal," said Rennie. "(Mattocks) is always going to be creating chances for himself because of the way he plays. "If he can be taking those chances, weve got a really special player on our hands." Neither team could find a goal in an even first half defined by midfield play. Just before half-time, the weather turned suddenly, dropping temperatures amid ferocious wind and rain. Vancouver nearly opened scoring in the 45th minute when Sebastian Le Toux fed Camilo in the six-yard box. The Brazilian forward poked his shot just wide to the right -- the Whitecaps only shot of the half -- and the teams hurried to the dressing rooms. Lightning delayed the start of the second half for 25 minutes, but it did nothing to deter the Whitecaps patient, attacking style. As the weather returned to normal, Vancouver avoided disaster when Darlington Nagbes shot slipped just over the bar in the 50th minute. Le Toux forced a reaction save from Troy Perkins in the 58th minute. Whitecaps keeper Joe Cannon made two diving saves in two minutes to deny Portland midway through the second half but could not come up with another spectacular play to keep Kris Boyd from scoring for Portland in the 68th minute. The Timbers designated player volleyed in a rebound after Cannon failed to gather a quick shot from inside the box. Camilo nearly levelled the score for Vancouver with a skipping shot in the 74th minute. After playing five games in two weeks, Vancouver does not play again until hosting Houston Dynamo on June 10. Rennie described the draw in Portland as the end of the first stage of the 2012 season -- a stage that leaves the Whitecaps in fifth place in the Western Conference on nineteen points. Terrell Suggs Elite Jersey . Darvish held San Diego to five hits over eight innings and got his first major league hit to help the Texas Rangers beat the Padres 4-2 on Wednesday for their sixth straight win. Torrey Smith Youth Jersey . ? The Korea Railroad Corp (Korail) asked high-speed train manufacturer Hyundai Rotem for the de-facto recall of the KTX- Sancheon train, urging the company to carry out a close inspection of the whole train. http://www.shopthebaltimoreravens.com/ray-rice-jerseys?kids=19 . Sixth after the opening run, Blardone had a blistering second trip down to finish in a combined time of two minutes 46.49 seconds and claim his third victory in this race, having also won in 2005 and 2009. Torrey Smith Elite Jersey . Wilin Rosario hit a two-run homer and Colorado took advantage of four Dodgers errors to romp past Los Angeles 13-3 Friday night for its season-high fifth straight win. Haloti Ngata Youth Jersey . -- Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said Thursday he has been told by high-ranking team officials that star centre Dwight Howard has previously asked that he be fired. NEW YORK -- Saints quarterback Drew Brees, former New Orleans linebacker Scott Fujita and players union head DeMaurice Smith were at the NFL offices Monday discussing the teams bounty program. Other issues also were being discussed with league executives, according to a person with knowledge of the meetings. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the talks are not being made public. The league would not comment on the meetings, which also included discussions of HGH testing. Also on hand was NFL Players Association President Domonique Foxworth, who was elected to that position last month. Brees and Fujita, now with the Browns, are members of the NFLPAs executive committee. Fujita was with the Saints in 2009 when the pay-for-pain bounty pool grew as large as $50,000 and the team won the Super Bowl. Browns coach Pat Shurmur said on a conference call with Cleveland media Monday that Fujita missed the teams first off-season training session because he was in New York. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is expected to soon punish players for their roles in the program that got Saints coach Sean Payton suspended for 2012. Between 22 and 27 current and former Saints defenders were involved, according to the league investigation. The NFL investigation found that Payton initially lied about the existence of a bounty program and instructed his defensive assistants to do the same. Anquan Boldin Jersey. The Saints have been fined $500,000 and stripped of two second-round draft picks. General manager Mickey Loomis is suspended for the first eight games of the upcoming season, while interim head coach Joe Vitt -- who took over that role Monday as Payton began his suspension through the Super Bowl -- will be barred for the first six regular-season games. Former Saints defensive co-ordinator Gregg Williams, who oversaw the bounty system in which opponents were targeted for hits that could sideline or injure them, is suspended indefinitely. He left New Orleans in January to become defensive co-ordinator in St. Louis. Williams has apologized for his role in the bounty program. The leagues investigation found that Williams bounty system offered off-the-books cash payments of $1,500 for "knockouts," in which an opposing player was knocked out of a game, or $1,000 for "cart-offs," in which an opponent needed help off the field. Last summer, the NFL announced it would begin testing for human growth hormone, but the union had to approve the process. The players have yet to do so, citing uncertainty about the detection methods and appeals process. The sides have been stalemated on HGH testing ever since. ------ AP Sports Writer Brett Martell in New Orleans contributed to this story. ' ' '
