Polands debut at the European Championship four years ago ended in disappointment: three games, zero wins. Wholesale Jerseys . The Poles have shaken things up since then -- theyve hired a new coach, revamped much of the squad and uncovered a trio of players who have found success in one of Europes toughest leagues. As co-host of Euro 2012, Poland is hoping the changes make a difference when they take on Russia, Greece and the Czech Republic in Group A. "It is our goal to advance from the group and I am convinced we can do it," Poland coach Franciszek Smuda said. "But this is a group that you can be wrong about. Russia is an excellent team. I think they are the favourites to advance from our group. Greece also is very good." Poland, which automatically qualified for the tournament as co-host, hasnt played a competitive match since 2010 World Cup qualifying. But the team has performed well in friendlies against some top-tier opposition, including a string of draws against Germany, Mexico and Portugal. That has produced a little buzz at home, and a growing sense of hope that the team can put on a good show. "Last year showed that we can play with strong opponents," said Smuda, who took over as coach in late 2009 from Leo Beenhakker after Polands failed World Cup qualifying campaign. "OK, so we didnt win, but we were good to watch. Against Germany, France and Portugal we fought as equals despite the fact that we dont have a team that has played with that lineup at a tournament and hasnt played against those sorts of opponents. "Thats why Im optimistic and why Poles are optimistic." While his team has proven tough to beat, Smuda readily admits he doesnt have the same talent pool to choose from as some other coaches at the competition. "Taking over this post, I thought that you could easily find 11 players, and good players at that. But it turns out that its actually very hard to find 11 good players," he said. "We arent in a situation like the Germans are right now, where we could put together three national teams from our roster. We can only put together one, and we have to pray to God that we dont have any injuries." What Smuda can draw on is a handful of top-class players -- the Borussia Dortmund trio of Robert Lewandowski, Jakub Blaszczykowski and Lukasz Piszczek, as well as Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. Polands attack will be centred on the 23-year-old Lewandowski, who is coming off a stellar campaign for Dortmund, where he scored 22 goals in 34 matches -- third best in the league. His pace and finishing ability have attracted the interest of Europes biggest clubs, and give Poland a quality scoring threat it hasnt enjoyed in more than a decade. The bigger question is who will play alongside him up front, and Smuda has few quality options -- if any -- to chose from. In the midfield, Blaszczykowski will provide a strong attack with his pace and dribbling down the right flank. Auxerre midfielder Dariusz Dudka, who is a veteran Polands 2006 World Cup and Euro 2008 teams, and Bordeaux player Ludovic Obraniak arent flashy, but provide solid midfield play. Piszczek is Polands top defender, and considered one of the best in the German league, particularly with is attacking ability. The rest of the back line, however, has proven less reliable, and is prone to the occasional breakdown. That puts much of the weight of Polands defence on the shoulders of Szczesny, Arsenals first-choice keeper. The 22-year-old Szczesny, whose father also played in goal for Poland, has been impressive in his national team appearances, most notably against Germany in September when he made a series of crucial saves to preserve the 2-2 draw. Smuda isnt making any guarantees, but he promises his players will be ready to go. "We are playing at home and we will do our best to advance from the group and it will be a great success for these boys," Smuda said. His countrymen will be watching. Cheap Jerseys Free Shipping . Matt Joyce hit a three-run homer off fill-in closer David Robertson in the ninth inning, falling down on a twisted ankle as he finished his swing, and the Tampa Bay Rays rallied to beat the Yankees 4-1. Wholesale Jerseys . Coach Jesse Marsch got his players out West early enough to put in a pair of training sessions leading up to Saturday nights game at Dicks Sporting Goods Park. Marsch, one of only three players to compete in each of the MLSs first 14 seasons, has his own opinion of the best approach in adjusting to the thinner air. Jermichael Finley Jersey . All eyes were on Edmontons Shawn Williams, however, as he entered the NLLs history books. It was his record 189th consecutive game, making him the leagues ironman. Wholesale Jerseys Cheap . Els must win this week to qualify for next weeks Masters and avoid missing the seasons first major for the first time since 1993. But hell consider winning at Redstone a bonus, and is more focused on building on the strong start to his year. Matt Ryan Jersey . In the playoffs, this rivalry dates all the way back to the 1956-57 season when the Hawks called St. Louis home. Since moving to the Peach State in 1968, however, the Hawks have never beaten the Celtics in the postseason, losing six straight series (1972, 73, 83, 86, 88 and 2008. SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Even with Tim Duncan sitting out to rest, the San Antonio Spurs had enough to get an easy win on the road for the third time in three nights. The Spurs headed back to San Antonio after their fifth straight win overall and a thorough dismantling of three West Coast teams on consecutive nights, winning each game by at least 20 points. Tiago Splitter and Gary Neal scored 17 points each, leading the Spurs to a 127-102 victory over the Kings on Wednesday night. "Our best player (Duncan) doesnt play and we still win by 20," said Stephen Jackson, one of four reserves who scored in double figures. "Its our preparation, giving every team we face respect, and going out and playing hard." The Spurs were coming off 21-point victories at Golden State and the Los Angeles Lakers the previous two days and showed no signs of fatigue against the struggling Kings. Using their reserves extensively all game, the Spurs beat the Kings in Sacramento for an eighth straight time and remained a half-game in front of Oklahoma City for the top seed in the Western Conference. The Thunder won at Phoenix on Wednesday night. Duncan was given the night off to rest and it didnt seem to matter. San Antonio had seven players in double figures, shot nearly 59 per cent, had 26 assists, and only one player (Jackson) played 30 minutes or more. "Everyone wants to be in a rhythm now," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "Its too late in the season to lose a bunch of games when they really count at this point in the season. Being able to win down the stretch of the season, nobody would trade that." Tony Parker had 15 points and eight assists for the Spurs, who stretched the lead to more than 20 points early in the fourth quarter. Jackson, Kawhi Leonard and Manu Ginobili all had 13 points, and Danny Green scored 11. Isaiah Thomas had 21 points and eight assists for the Kings, who have dropped eight of nine games. Marcus Thornton scored 20 points and DeMarcus Cousins had 18 points and nine rebounds, but fouled out with just under 8 minutes left in the game. San Antonio had the lead for much of the first two quarters, then pulled away in the second half when they outscored the Kings 69-45. "They are a tough team to play; they have (good) players at every position that can go in and be productive," Thornton said. "And itts not just on offence, its at the defensive end, too. Wholesale MLB Jerseys. Thats the mark of a great team." Ahead by 11 points after three quarters, the Spurs continued to shoot well to open the fourth. They started the quarter with an 11-3 run, which ended with a three-point play by Splitter to put San Antonio ahead 108-89 with 8:47 left. "They executed better than us in the third quarter, thats what happened," Cousins said. "They ran their stuff to perfection and took us out of our game." No one would suggest that the Spurs are peeking ahead, anticipating the playoffs, which start late next week. A year ago, San Antonio won 61 games and had the best record in the West, but were beaten by Memphis in the first round of the post-season. "The playoffs will be tough, every team in the West is very talented," Parker said. "You try to be playing well this time of year. We want to stay healthy, stay fresh." The Kings owners, the Maloof family, announced at last weeks NBA owners meetings that they were backing out of a proposed downtown arena plan in Sacramento, which has put the franchises future beyond next season in doubt. The Kings, who will miss the playoffs for a sixth straight season, have as many problems off the court as on it. Sacramento has dropped 13 of 16 games since March 20 and has the second-worst record behind New Orleans in the Western Conference. Leonard scored nine points in the third quarter when the Spurs shot over 63 per cent and outscored the Kings 39-29, taking an 11-point lead heading to the fourth. Ahead by one point at the half, the Spurs opened the third quarter on a 12-4 run. Scoreless in the first half, Leonard had back-to-back baskets, the second one a twisting, fast-break layup that put San Antonio ahead 70-61 at the 8:13 mark. NOTES: Kings owners Joe and Gavin Maloof, plus their mother, were seated courtside. During the recent arena controversy, the Maloofs have been absent from their typical courtside location. . Parker scored 10 points and the Spurs reserves combined for 30 points in the opening half when the Blazers led 58-57. ...Thornton had a great first quarter, making 6 of 7 shots and scoring 14 points. But the streaky Thornton didnt score again until getting three straights baskets during a 55-second period in the third quarter. . The Spurs have won 9 of 11 road games and have five games left in the regular season. ' ' ' |
