TORONTO -- Toronto FC manager Paul Mariner hopes new defender Darren ODea can help stop the bleeding. Cheap NFL Jerseys . The 25-year-old Irish international will make his debut Saturday when the Reds host Sporting Kansas City, and it comes at a time when Toronto is struggling with defensive breakdowns, especially on set pieces. Mariner was livid with his squad on Wednesday after allowing a corner kick goal in the 21st minute of a 2-2 draw with Portland. On Friday, he ran multiple drills on dead ball situations as new face ODea assumed his role as the backlines new "general." "Its quite obvious the team needs to stop conceding so many goals," said ODea. "Theres a lot of publicity about set pieces and in football its tough enough keeping clean sheets without conceding set pieces. Were trying hard not to do that and hopefully we can start tomorrow." Mariner has long preached the importance of a "big boss" on the defence and in ODea, who has 14 caps for the Irish and spent six seasons with Scottish League perennials Celtic, he believes hes found it. "Hes a different specimen," said Mariner. "Its all about habits. Hes got fantastic habits on the field, off the field. You can see the way he commands himself. Hes beautiful for us back there. I think the fans are really going to take to this kid." ODea was signed Aug. 3, but had his debut put on hold first by the rescheduling of Torontos Aug. 11 match against Columbus, allowing for members of the Crew to attend the funeral of former teammate Kirk Urso, and again on Wednesday to due international duties. Ireland played a friendly with Serbia in Belgrade on Wednesday. Less than 48 hours later ODea was on Torontos practice pitch bolstering the defence. "Today was important to get the rubbish out of my legs and shake it off," ODea said. "Ill be ready for tomorrow. Im itching to get going." His first MLS test wont be an easy one, as Eastern Conference-leading Kansas City (13-7-4) looks to win its third straight league game and stay unbeaten in five overall. SKCs last meeting with the Reds was a 2-0 victory at Livestrong Sporting Park in Mariners first game as manager after taking over from Aron Winter. Toronto is dead last in the Eastern Conference at 5-13-5 and winless in its last three MLS games. Mariner says hes particularly concerned with Sporting midfielder and team assists-leader Graham Zusi, whose service game poses a threat to Torontos wobbly defence on set pieces. "The service is fantastic from Zusi, assuming hes playing, and theyre very aggressive and weve got to match it," said Mariner. "We havent really been matching it and thats been a bit disappointing." After fielding a depleted lineup against the Timbers, Toronto will be back to full strength after a slew of international callups. Forward Ryan Johnson (Jamaica), defender Dicoy Williams (Jamaica), midfielder Terry Dunfield (Canada), defender Doneil Henry (Canada), and defender Logan Emory (suspension) all missed Wednesdays match. Johnson, who leads the team in goals with five behind injured Dutch striker Danny Koevermans, will likely slide into the midfield while Frenchman Eric Hassli and Luis Silva continue their attacking partnership on the frontline. The duo yielded a goal each against Portland in the second half, with Hassli getting an assist on Silvas goal in the 63rd. "Luis is a great player. He has great feet," said Hassli, whose goal in the 57th was his first for the club. "It was crazy. Thanks to Luis too, he did a great job for me." While Hassli and Silva keep SKC goalie Jimmy Nielsen busy, TFC keeper Milos Kocic knows he needs to do more to protect his end of the field. Hes looking forward to having new teammate ODea give him some support and take charge while defending dead ball situations. "On the set pieces, hes the guy whos going to take responsibility," said Kocic. "Hes not going to let people jump easy and thats exactly what we need. We lost a lot of points on set pieces, so we need to take responsibility. We have to defend our home. "I dont want to put pressure on the guy, let him be himself and bring what he brings to the game, which is exactly what we need at this moment -- take charge of the backline, make sure to communicate and get on the guys who are not doing their job." PHOENIX -- Arizona left-hander Joe Saunders describes teammate Chris Young as unconscious at the plate. Turns out, hes pretty close to the truth. Young had three hits including his team-best fifth home run and Saunders pitched seven strong innings to help lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 5-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night. "Its tough to think at the plate when you have 95 (mph) coming in every night," said Young, who is off to a .405 start with eight extra-base hits and 13 RBIs. "Ive had times when Ive thought about my mechanics too much. Im trying not to do that as much as I can." Young said hes adjusted his swing since last season, during which he hit .236 with139 strikeouts in 567 at-bats. But he isnt about to start sharing the details. "My mechanics are a little different but Im not going to start talking about every little thing because then Ill start thinking about it," Young said. "I just try to keep on a routine, not get too high, not get too low. I go out, throw it out there and whatever happens, happens." Young gave the Diamondbacks a 4-1 lead in the sixth, lining a home run just over the 376-foot sign in left off Evan Meek after Miguel Montero had led off the inning with a bloop single to centre. "Hes been in situations like that before. Now well see if we can consistently do it," said Arizona manager Kirk Gibson. "Hes not missing mistakes." The two runs were more than enough for Saunders (1-0), who allowed a run on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts. "Its nice as a starting pitcher to know if you give up one or two in the first youre not going to lose the ballgame," Saunders said. "I tried to keep the bullpen out of the game as long as possible because I know those guys have thrown a lot of innings recently." Aaron Hill and Gerardo Parra also homered for the Diamondbacks, who have won two straight. Arizona is 25-4 in its last 29 home games. Neil Walker drove in the run for the Pirates, who have lost six of seven. Pittsburgh has scored two runs or fewer in seven of 10 games this season. "We havent scored many runs but we hae been in just about every game," said Casey McGehee, who singled to help the Pirrates score their only run. NFL Jerseys Wholesale. "I think there have been flashes and signs that we are swinging the bats a little bit better. I think we have too much offensive talent to continue this for too long." Pirates starter Erik Bedard (0-3) scattered three hits over five innings but walked four, the final two of which helped the Diamondbacks take the lead in the fourth. Paul Goldschmidt took ball four with two outs and went to second on a passed ball. Bedard then walked Jason Kubel and Ryan Roberts followed with a line single to right, scoring Goldschmidt to make it 2-1. Bedard had walked only two batters in his first two starts spanning 12 innings. "You dont like the inconsistency of the command, nor does he," said Pirates manager Clint Hurdle. "Yet, is the second game hes left down 2-1 after five. Were not in a bad spot at 2-1." The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the first with a two-out rally. Andrew McCutchen hit a broken-bat single to left and stole second. McGehee legged out an infield hit to deep short before Walker lined a single to centre, scoring McCutchen.
