REGINA - The faces on Team Nova Scotia are very familiar at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, but the most famous one is not here. Mark Sanchez Womens Jersey . Nancy Delahunt, Mary-Anne Arsenault and Kim Kelly won a record five Canadian championships and two world titles over a six-year span with skip Colleen Jones. They appeared in eight straight Canadian championships together from 1999 to 2006. In a move that rocked the Canadian curling community, the trio parted ways with Jones in 2006 and formed their own team the following season with Laine Peters. After a years absence from the Scotties, Delahunt, Arsenault and Kelly are back representing their province, but without the larger-than-life personality that is Jones. "Its definitely a different feel," Arsenault said Friday at the Brandt Centre. "That was an era. We have no hard feelings and she has no hard feelings. "Nancy and she play tennis together once a week and we still do charity events together and see each other at the club. Theres no animosity that people would like there to be I think." Arsenault throws fourth stones, while Delahunt calls the shots as skip and throws lead stones. Delahunt, Arsenault and Kelly werent willing to compete, train and travel at the pace Jones wanted to in a bid to represent Canada at the 2010 Olympics, after falling short in their campaign for the 2006 Games. "We just werent willing to give that much time anymore," Arsenault said. Said Delahunt: "We set up our whole personal lives and our whole curling routines around winning. Thats just flipped now. Weve set this up around making sure were enjoying our playing and (it) not taking too much time and we happened to win." Delahunt says the breakup of the team was agonizing and she still gets emotional about the aftermath, when she, Arsenault and Kelly were accused of going behind Joness back to form another team. "People made assumptions and I was devastated because (she) is someone who means so much to me and my life and the way it was being portrayed, it was just so vile," Delahunt said. "It seemed like it was a sniper shot and thats not what it was. "I know Colleen missed us terrifically. Even before this team was set, Colleen had the hardest time knowing that the old team was breaking up because its such a big, big part of her life, curling and winning." Jones played third for Kay Zinck last season. She published a book on curling late last year and is skipped a new squad on the cashspiel circuit this winter, consisting of B.C. curlers Georgina Wheatcroft and Darah Provencal and Kate Hamer from Ontario. Jones thinks shell be able to watch her former teammates on television without regret. "Its sort of a new time, a new era," Jones said from Halifax. "I dont think it will be difficult. I wish them well. I know theyll do well." Nova Scotia opens against New Brunswicks Sylvie Robichaud in Saturdays opening draw (TSN, 4 p.m. ET). Ontarios Sherry Middaugh takes on Canadas Kelly Scott, Manitobas Jennifer Jones, the 2005 national champion, takes on Suzanne Gaudet of P.E.I. and Quebecs Marie-France Larouche takes on Saskatchewans Michelle Englot. Fridays practice session at the Brandt Centre started on a sombre note as Saskatchewan skip Michelle Englot learned that morning that her father Joe had died suddenly after suffering chest pains. "My dad told my mom yesterday . . . that if he died, `Tell Michelle to still curl, so thats what Im going to do," Englot said. "Im going to do it for him." The top four teams at the conclusion of the round robin Thursday advance to playoffs and any ties for fourth will be solved by tiebreaker. The winner of the Scotties represents Canada at the world championships March 22-30 in Vernon, B.C., and earns a return trip to next years national championship in Victoria. There is $100,000 in prize money on the line with $15,500 going to each finalist. The victor will also play in the Continental Cup of Curling later this year and the 2009 Canada Cup. Delahunt and Kelly have said this is the last year they will curl at an elite level, unless Nova Scotia happens to win the Canadian title. "Theyre done unless we win. No pressure," said Arsenault. Notes: Ontarios Kim Moore, Kirsten Wall and Andra Harvey, Canadas Kelly Scott, B.C.s Amanda Brennan, P.E.I.s Robyn MacPhee, Manitobas Jill Officer and Quebecs Nancy Belanger all reached Saturdays quarter-final of the Ford Hot Shots sharpshooting competition in Fridays preliminaries. The winner earns a two-year lease on a vehicle. . . . Regina lasted hosted the Canadian womens curling championship a decade ago just days after Sandra Schmirlers hometown team won the gold medal at the 1998 Olympics. Knowshon Moreno Jersey . and Annie Martin of Sherbrooke, Que. have been eliminated from the womens beach volleyball tournament at the London 2012 Games. Brian Cushing Jersey . Ortiz has been on the disabled list since June 3 with a partially torn tendon sheath in his left wrist, which he sustained on May 31 against Baltimore when he fouled off a pitch. Andre Johnson Jersey . Mellanby was announced Monday as director of player personnel for the Montreal Canadiens, as new general manager Marc Bergevin continued to rebuild the clubs management team. Jonathan Dwyer Jersey . After a flurry of reports, White noted on Twitter that "Evans has pins in his thumb and is out for a while!!!!" UFC 140 is slated for Dec. 10 at Torontos Rogers Centre. Torrey Smith Womens Jersey . LOUIS -- The St.VALDOSTA, Ga. -- Luke List won the South Georgia Classic on Sunday for his first Nationwide Tour title, closing with a 4-under 68 for a two-stroke victory over Brian Stuard. The former Vanderbilt player finished at 16-under 272 at Kinderlou Forest, and earned $112,500. "It feels fantastic," said List, surrounded by his parents, grandparents and girlfriend. "Its hard to describe. I really put my head down, especially on the weekend. I knew where I was all day and it was nice to perform under the pressure. Hopefully, this will be a turning point for me and I can get a few more this year." SStuard finished with a 66. Spencer Larsen Jersey. Three-time PGA Tour winner Woody Austin, tied for the third-hole lead with List, had a 73 to drop the third, five strokes back. List averaged a field-best 329 yards off the tee on the 7,781-yard course, the longest on the tour. "This course sets up so well for me that I just told myself to stay out of your way and do the right things," List said. "Out here with my length I just had so many opportunities. This is a long course but I had a lot of wedges where I could give myself those 15- to 20-footers. I never felt stressed out there." ' ' ' |
