Its the "wow factor" that makes being inducted into Canadas Sports Hall of Fame such a thrill for former B. Champ Bailey Jersey .C. Lions kicker Lui Passaglia. Growing up in the working class neighbourhood of East Vancouver, Passaglia dreamed of playing for the CFL Lions. He now shares a place in history with some of Canadas best-known and honoured sports figures. "As you moved along and progressed and actually played professional football you thought you had the icing on the cake there," Passaglia said Monday. "To have the call 11 years after (you retire) that you are going to be inducted into a prestigious hall of fame with other sports icons and teams and builders, I go wow. Its a wow factor in that sense. Who would have thunk it?" Passaglia is one of six people who will be inducted Tuesday. The $30-million Sports Hall of Fame opened July 1 at Calgarys Canada Olympic Park. Joining Passaglia in the Class of 2011 will be Ray Bourque, a Stanley Cup winner and member of the Hockey Hall of Fame; Andrea Neil, a former assistant coach with the Canadian womens soccer team and two-time W-League soccer champion; Peter Reid, a former Ironman champion; Lauren Woolstencroft, winner of 10 Paralympic ski medals; and Dick Pound, a former vice-president of the International Olympic Committee and one-time head of the World Anti-Doping Agency. Canadas Sports Hall of Fame now has 520 members representing 60 sports. Thats what makes his selection so special for Passaglia, the CFLs all-time points leader, who already is a member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame and the B.C. Lions Wall of Fame. "Any recognition when you get into the halls are special," said the 57-year-old, who played 25 years for the Lions and won three Grey Cups. "When you are in a collage of sports and athletes and builders from all walks of life and different sports, it kind of gives it a little bit more of a special feeling. "Now you are mixed in with a lot of the individuals and teams that are elite in their other sports. Never did I think Id be recognized in this fashion. The fact you are mingling with the best in other sports is kind of neat." Pound said being inducted is something "you dont ever anticipate." "A huge portion of what I as able to do was not because of me," he said. "It was because of a bunch of people volunteering. "If youre willing to put in the time and effort, its amazing what things happen." For years Canadas Sports Hall of Fame existed only on a website. Now its a 44,000-square-foot building with a 120-seat theatre, 50 interactive displays and more than 1,000 artifacts. The hall was founded in 1955 and once shared space with the Hockey Hall of Fame at Torontos Exhibition grounds. When hockeys shrine moved to a new downtown Toronto location, attendance declined. Plans to relocate the hall to Ottawa were never fulfilled. The Hall of Fame was demolished to make way for BMO Field in 2006 and the exhibits were kept in storage. Calgary beat out nine other cities to be the halls new home. Funding was paid for by the federal government ($15 million), Albertas provincial government ($10 million) and the City of Calgary ($5 million). Construction started in February 2010. Passaglia said the hall is an important part of Canadian heritage. "When you can showcase to families and people in our country anything that is done well by Canadians, its a benefit," he said. "Its great for the culture of our country. Its all part and parcel of who we are." James Harrison Jersey .Then, he waited for the results. Not so much for his time on the scoreboard — that was secondary. The real test came the following day when he climbed out of bed. Eric Decker Jersey . The ongoing debate on whether football needs technology for questionable decisions was given new impetus after Ukraine striker Marko Devic was denied what appeared to be a goal against England at the European Championship on Tuesday. Tracy Porter Jersey . Come Tuesday, the Giants and Phillies will see a third such marquee encounter in as many games of their NL championship series: Cole Hamels versus Matt Cain. Dexter McCluster Jersey . - Connecticut accepted a bid Sunday to play Mid-American Conference champion Buffalo in the International Bowl in Toronto. Peyton Manning Jersey . Bay, who spent six weeks on the DL due to a rib fracture, was not in the lineup for the Mets game against the Washington Nationals.HELSINKI, Finland -- The International Ice Hockey Federation is cracking down on head hits just as sternly as the NHL. French forward Sacha Treille was suspended five games at the IIHF World Hockey Championship on Monday for a vicious head shot on Roman Starchenko of Kazakhstan -- the harshest penalty given out in the modern era of the tournament. "(This) underscores the IIHFs commitment to eliminate hits to the head and neck area," the organization said in announcing its decision. Treille will likely miss the rest of the tournament. On Sunday, the six-foot-five French forward caught his smaller Kazak opponent with an elbow to the head in the neutral zone just before the midway point of a game between the countries. The force of the contact sent Starchenkos stick flying high into the air and he was knocked out cold. The Kazak forward was later diagnosed with a severe concussion and is expected to miss the rest of the world championship. France coach Dave HHenderson called the IIHFs decision "logical" and expressed concern for Starchenko. Eric Weddle Jersey. "I asked the players to finish their checks and everything -- it was just a little error," he said. "Its a difficult thing for us because (Treille) is a top player on our team, but obviously were worried about the other player. "We dont want to see anybody get hurt." The incident earned Treille a game misconduct and match penalty, which came with an automatic one-game suspension. The IIHFs discipline committee of Dan Marouelli and Jeff Sauer added four more games to that on Monday. It was the second suspension of the tournament. Denmarks Jannik Hansen was given a one-game ban over the weekend for hitting a Czech opponent from behind. The NHL has handed out a number of suspensions for questionable hits in the playoffs, including a 25-game ban to Phoenix Coyotes forward Raffi Torres for a high hit on Chicagos Marian Hossa. ' ' ' |
