SAO PAULO - With David Beckhams Olympic dream over, it will be former teammate Ryan Giggs and young Brazilian star Neymar attracting all the attention at the mens football tournament in London. Andy Dalton Jersey . Beckham failed to make the British team, ending his chances to cap a successful career with an Olympic victory at home, so it will be up to the 38-year-old Manchester United veteran and the 20-year-old Brazilian sensation to try to create some hype about a competition which lacks the lustre of footballs top events. With only three players older than 23 allowed in each team, few fans would pay much attention to the tournament if it werent for the likes of Neymar and Giggs. Neymar will be the leader of a Brazil team which will be mostly at full-strength, filled with players who will also be at the World Cup it will host in 2014. The Olympic tournament is the only significant football title Brazil hasnt won. Giggs will headline a Britain team which will be playing in the mens Olympic football tournament for the first time since 1960. The hope was that Giggs would reunite with his former Manchester United teammate, but Beckham on Wednesday announced that he didnt make the 18-man squad selected by coach Stuart Pearce. "Everyone knows how much playing for my country has always meant to me, so I would have been honoured to have been part of this unique Team GB squad," Beckham said in a statement. "Naturally I am very disappointed, but there will be no bigger supporter of the team than me. And like everyone, I will be hoping they can win the gold." Beckham was hoping to make his national team for the first time since 2009. It would have been extra special be in the Olympic team because he was very active in helping promote the London bid, lending his global brand and helping attract attention to the citys efforts. After London was selected as host in 2005, he became an official ambassador for the games. Giggs hasnt officially been picked yet but was likely to make the team along with former Wales teammate Craig Bellamy and England defender Micah Richards as the overage players in the squad. "Ive not played in (an Olympic) tournament so it would be nice to be involved in a tournament atmosphere Ive never experienced," Giggs said. Neymar was only a few years old when Giggs and Beckham began playing together at Manchester United. As their careers are coming to an end, the Brazilian is just beginning to attract the worlds attention. He is the player carrying Brazils hopes for success in London and at the 2014 World Cup. And the Olympics will give him a chance to prove that he can be the decisive player the entire country expects him to be. Neymar has already been sought after by teams such as Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona. He was in the list of 23 players running for FIFAs player of the year award in 2011, and won FIFAs prize for the most beautiful goal that same year. "To play in the Olympics is a dream for any athlete," Neymar said. "Especially to play for Brazil, which has never won this competition before." The five-time World Cup champions won the Olympic silver in 1984 and 1988, and the bronze in 1996 and 2008, when Argentina took gold with Lionel Messi. The Argentines, which didnt qualify for London, also won the gold in 2004. Brazil is one of the favourites this year, along with host Britain and Spain, which won the under-21 European Championship last year to clinch its spot in the Olympic tournament. The Brazilians have an advantage because it is the only team which will bring most of its top players. The senior squad is made up of several under-23 players and theyll all likely be in London, including Neymar, Alexandre Pato, Leandro Damiao, Oscar and Paulo Henrique Ganso. "The Olympic tournament will mark an important stage in Brazils preparations for the World Cup," Brazil coach Mano Menezes said. Four of the 16 teams in London will be playing in the Olympic tournament for the first time — Senegal, Gabon, Belarus and the United Arab Emirates. Britain won the gold in the first two editions of the mens tournament, in 1908 and 1912. The only other champions playing in London will be Uruguay (1924 and 1928) and Spain (1992). The mens tournament will run from July 26 — a day before the opening ceremonies — until Aug. 11. Matches will be played across Britain in six cities — London, Cardiff, Coventry, Manchester, Newcastle and Glasgow. Ray Lewis Jersey . Rondo scored. The Heat answered. Then again. And again. Eventually, Rondo missed, one of the rare times he didnt deliver on an unforgettable night. Darren McFadden Youth Jersey . Eaton dominated the two-day competition from start to finish and capped it with an overwhelming 1,000 metres in the concluding event to break the record he set last year with a total of 6,645 points. The old mark was 6,568 points. Willis McGahee Jersey . Mellanby was announced Monday as director of player personnel for the Montreal Canadiens, as new general manager Marc Bergevin continued to rebuild the clubs management team. Darrius Heyward-Bey Jersey . The Mooseheads built a 2-1 lead early in the first after Tomas Knotek and Peter-James Corsi cancelled out Maxime Macenauers opening goal. But the Huskies (34-14-2-1) scored five unanswered goals to end the first period with Macenauer scoring his second of the period. Willis McGahee Jersey . The Irish became the first team to be eliminated from the European Championship on Thursday, losing to defending champion Spain 4-0. SEATTLE -- Seattle manager Eric Wedge knew he was short in the bullpen Monday night. Prior to the game, he was aware former closer Brandon League was being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Current closer Tom Wilhelmsen had left Safeco Field to be with his pregnant wife. About midway through the game, Wedge learned hard-throwing Steve Delabar was not at his disposal either, because he was being traded down the hall to the Blue Jays in another deal. Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma didnt know it, but a dominant outing was precisely what his club needed with a thin bullpen. Iwakuma struck out a career-high 13 and Michael Saunders and Kyle Seager had two hits apiece to help Seattle win its fifth consecutive game 4-1 over the Toronto Blue Jays. "He was fantastic tonight," Wedge said. "We really needed him to step up. We were obviously very short in the bullpen tonight. For him to go eight strong innings against a very good hitting ballclub, just a great performance." Adding to the Iwakumas strain was the fact he just returned from a trip to Japan on Saturday for personal reasons. Wedge opted not to inform Iwakuma of how short the bullpen was. "I dont think we needed to add pressure to that," Wedge said. "We tried to keep that close to the vest." Iwakuma (2-2) struck out Rajai Davis three straight times after allowing Davis first career leadoff homer, which gave the Blue Jays a brief 1-0 lead. Iwakumas 13 strikeouts broke the Mariners rookie record of 12 previously shared by Mark Langston, Randy Johnson and Freddy Garcia. Iwakuma threw eight innings, allowed four hits and walked three. Toronto starter Ricky Romero (8-8) went six innings, allowed eight hits and three earned runs. He struck out seven and walked two. Romero has lost seven consecutive starts. "I think overall, there was much more conviction and trust and belief in his stuff," Toronto manager John Farrell said. "Evident by the first-pitch strikes; he used his fastball much more aggressively. Still not to the point where weve seen Ricky pitch many times before, but I think this is a step in the right direction." The Blue Jays removed left fielder Travis Snider after the sixth innning because they traded him to Pittsburgh for right-handed starter Brad Lincoln. Ray Rice Jersey. The Mariners tacked on a run in the third thanks to a wild pitch, a passed ball and an error by third baseman Brett Lawrie on Brendan Ryans grounder that scored Mike Carp, who singled. Michael Saunders added an RBI double in the fifth. Iwakuma teetered on occasion after the first, but still held down the Blue Jays. Seager charged Jeff Mathis grounder and threw out Yunel Escobar at the plate in the second. Colby Rasmus drove Saunders to the centre-field wall in fifth inning, but Saunders made the catch on the warning track. Iwakuma struck out at least one in each inning he pitched. Lawrie struck out four times and snapped his bat over his knee in the dugout following one at-bat. The Mariners loaded the bases in the first inning after Jesus Monteros line drive hit second base umpire Tony Randazzo. He jumped and spun to avoid the liner, but it struck him in the left side. Dustin Ackley came home on the play but had to return to third because the ball hit the umpire and stayed in the infield. John Jaso grounded into a double play to score Ackley. Seager extended his majors-leading two-out RBI total with a single to left to bring in Saunders and put Seattle in front 2-1. Davis leadoff homer delighted the large number of Blue Jays fans in Safeco Field. The fans opened the game by singing along to, "O, Canada" and dispatched a rousing cheer following Davis sixth homer of the year. NOTES: Jose Bautista took swings and hit off the tee with both a fungo and regular bat Monday. Manager John Farrell said Bautistas intensity level was 70-75 per cent during his swings. Bautista has been on the 15-day disabled list since July 17 because of left wrist inflammation. . Blue Jays RHP Brandon Morrow came out of Sundays rehabilitation start in good shape. He hit 95 mph on the radar gun and threw 26 pitches in three innings. Toronto plans to give Morrow three more minor league starts. Morrow went on the 60-day disabled list June 13 because of a strained left oblique. . The Blue Jays placed 1B/DH Adam Lind on the 15-day disabled list Monday, retroactive to July 26, with a mid-back strain. ' ' '
