So, the jist of it is that the State of Georgia has a giant budget shortfall and is contemplating raising tuition 77%. I helped start a state-wide group of student activists interested in saving our educations in November to protest a $100 fee they instituted for this Spring. Now comes word that the 35 schools in the University System of Georgia should expect a $300 million cut in their budget. I attend Georgia State University and our President recently announced that such a cut would cost us $34 million, 622 jobs, and force us to reject 1,000 or more extra students for the upcoming semesters. There has to be cutbacks somewhere. Here in Virginia, we're not doing too terribly.

Generally speaking, college tuition is absurd, but not unmanageable. i haven't heard if its going up or not. Public Educators aren't going to get a raise again, which is pissing off the unions, but thats not a bad thing in my opinion because our governor has made freed up billions of dollars in budget cuts, and more revenue generating policies are on the way.

So compared to Georgia, i think we Virginians have it easy.

Raising tuition 77% is just ridiculous though. that doesn't mean the same people will give MORE to the gov't, it just means that less people will provide the same amount. its not going to work.

Hmm, I think cutting back on education is never a reasonable thing.. it is ultimately central to the long term health and growth of a modern economy.

The last person quoted in the article is me! The next day they "found" $300 million... We're planning a MUCH larger demonstration on March 15 at the state Capitol which is looking like it will have about 1,000 attendees.

Solidarity.

This is sad Phil.... it is unfair to our generation. There was a time when going to university was a benefit and positive thing for the nation... there was a time when gaining a degree meant something but not now unfortunately.

What is to be our future?
