I am proud to be both a South African and New Zealander. I respect and am proud to acknowledge my roots, proud to be of khoi-san roots, the older ethnic group in the world. But at the same time I consider myself a kiwi through and through. I am black but I will in no way neglect my white heritage, which I cannot deny, and most folks cannot these days. Its apart of your genes, apart of your roots, and thats just what it is. For alot of people I met however, this is not the feeling. Alot of people feel that this idea of mixed cultural heritage, this inter-cultural exchange is a threat to individual cultures. Some people go so far as to argue that if countries do not turn to isolationism, that individualism in this world will be lost forever. Globalization will be the cause of this as they argue.

I disagree with these people but I understand where they come from. I am or was m8s with this guy back in highschool. I use to go to his house often before, I knew some of his family, his cousin from my old work, his folks are good people. Anyway, I stopped seeing him afew years back as I stopped seeing alot of others. I dont know, I mean it went both ways, people start drifting off after highschool, and so forth. It was only a couple of months back i met up with him again at another old m8s party. Before my other old m8 told me he turned all "skin head" and "racist" so I didnt expect any reunion. Suprisingly though at the party he was like "where'd you go man! what happened to you! tryed to call" and so forth. Now picture a white skin head with neo-nazi stickers all over his car, with white power m8s, all good meeting up with his old black m8. I went to his house, met up with his other new m8s, all skin heads, (I only figured that out after I left his house when I thought about it), they were all good, maybe he told them to back off. I think I would have not come down as I am obviously personally against their beliefs but whatever. They acted cool around me anyway so whatever.

So, I remember a discussion with my friend prior to cutting communication with him, prior to seeing him again after all these years. He told me how he didnt believe in interracial marriage, that his out for protecting his race. His not a bad guy, and he was really concerned about his culture so to say. His still a great m8, he'd invite me to his place at times even now, but yea I doubt things will go back to where it was.

Anyway, aside from the irony of having a white-power m8, (sorta), I can to an extend understand his frustrations. I mean I saw a couple of documentaries as well, on white power groups. I mean these guys are going the wrong way, but I "get it"... some of it. This isnt just a white problem as these folks would understand. Globalization, while it is in part positive, is negative in many ways. I understand the frustration of migrant coming into the country not mixing, not bothering to learn the language. I understand the frustration from kiwis (or whites in general) over that matter. I understand the frustration and idea of muslim extremists, but then again any religious extremist views should not be tolerated. I mean if somebody threaten the country they live in, they have no business living in it.

I agree on most grounds with this guy:

The fact is, as much as I get frustrated at extreme nationalists stereotyping hard working migrants, as much as I get frustrated at ignorant racist groups, I understand the many frustrated people and I myself get angry when people automatically label them as "racists". Because many of these guys who I know personally are not racist. Some of them may be led astray by ignorant fools, but some of their frustrations are justified.

The fact is, my old m8 is still a good guy and while I feel he may be hanging out with the wrong crowd, his concerns are understandable. There is a differences between a hard working migrant who wishes to start a new life, and respect the countries culture, and the migrant who comes into the country blatantly ignoring the laws, the culture, the history.... those who purposefully alienate themselves, and in turn alienate others. To me its a matter of respect towards the country that has accepted you to live there. To me we get bad examples of these kinds of migrants who make it worse for others who only wish to respect, to work and provide for his or her family in the new country.

So, while there are many many ignorant fools, folks out there, it is also important understand the frustrations. I know, I get it, and as a minority, as a black person who understands true racism, who understands what a divided country is, I understand your anger. I dont justify some folks joining more extreme ignorant groups, but I understand the fear and concerns of the many conservatives, national natives and the situation facing their country, their culture, and globalization. People should imbrace and not fear different cultures as the human race started in this manner, but at the same time the concerns are understandable.

I'd really appreciate other opinions over what I posted above.
