Raiding and defending essential?

I have been hearing alot of discussion around NS concerning regions wanting to leave the defender-raider status and try to look outside for something more to attract activity. Although everytime these discussions come up, there is always the majority that will argue that defending and raiding are virtually the only real ways to attract new nations and maintain activity. In the case of RP regions and political orientated regions, many of whom are fairly active, I would say that assumption is incorrect. There are obviously other ways to attract new members to your region, but the argument has made me think alittle more.

Does raiding and defending grow or improve activity for a region? Or does it depend on that particular region? I dont in any way propose to bring such practices here to Caprecia, but I am rather curious as to how many regions are dependent on them for survival.

In the regions I've been in, raiding has been a side thing.

In the Commonwealth, raiding was the only thing left as their yearn to be political fucked em over. So, since I couldn't play I raided.

And really, raiding doesn't depend much on a region. The Imperium's military is the only military I'm officially in, and I rarely post on their forums. I've actually raided more with The Dominion, and I'm not even officially in their forces.

As you know, Darkle raids with me and he's not officially in any raider regions. xD

So... raiding would exist so long as raiders are buds with each other. Regions just help them develop that friendship. :P

And if NS didn't have raiding and defending, it'd still have RP! :D

Sorry if this is utter crap, as you know, I'm confused right now.

raiding and invading are not essential elements to NS. Nor is RP, to be honest. they are just two facets of the NS world that people take part in, and we happen to emphasize RP more than the others. Its worked out well for us so far. Other people do a good job of recruiting using raiding/invading/defending. it just depends on your region, your vision for it, and the people you recruit.
