*clears throat* To hell with logic. Earth, after two more centuries of living at the mercy of mankind, the planet had gone through severe changes. It was an entirely different place than it had been three centuries earlier. People were now living in massive and intriguing wonders they called cities, which were no less than glass buildings towering over the countryside, completely shielded from outside forces by an amazing glass-like dome. Although it seemed to be clear, allowing people to see the world beyond it, it was stronger than steel, protecting the city from all forces of weather. The world beyond it always seemed clean, amazingly clean. The grass and trees were a lush and vivid green. The sky was always a soft and soothing blue and cloudy in a relaxing way. There was an occasional storm, but nature always remained the same. How it ended like that, the general populous knew not. All they knew was that it existed, and they were proud of it. Earth's inhabitants were also proud of the network of super cities they had across the surface of the planet. The entire world had been united under the banner of the Earth Sphere United Nation, which was organized after World War III had ripped apart countries across the globe. The new world government was benevolent. It had been shaped in the image of the world's freer states. The new government had allowed the Earth's super cities to exist, by paying and overseeing their construction one by one. Contact between the cities, which were constructed over the twenty-second century, was allowed freely, yet leaving them was not. No one knew why that was, but few cared. The world inside was too marvelous and perfect for the outside to matter. They were satisfied with what their domes allowed them to see, for the most part at least. There was the occasional rebel who attempted to break free of the domes and reach the outside world, yet the ESUN's always prevented that. However, one day, the government's luck ran out... 27th, April 2316 Several men were crouched behind a tall, metal building at the edge of the city. Far to their east were the huge super structures that made up Central Omaha. Several meters to the west was the large dome, beyond it was what the men called "freedom" and "nature, our true home." These men were part of an organization called Nature's Fist, it's one goal was to "free" the people inside the domed cities into the wild, and wondrous, nature outside the cities. Their leaders were devoted to their cause, believing it was humanity's place to live in nature's arms, not in artificial conditions. This was not the usual small attempt to free the city, this time it was far more concentrated and organized. There were several more of these parties preparing to raid the ten guard houses, which controlled the massive shields. From these guard houses, one could easily alter the state of the dome. The houses could even be used to take them down slowly, carefully, and properly without causing the estimated destruction that could be expected when causing large, and heavy, blocks of carbon and other materials to fall on and around a city. These men were armed, and ready to give their lives for their cause. One held a radio close, communicating with what could only be assumed to be their leader, taking part in a different raiding party. "Ready?" a voice asked for the radio. "Yeah," the man who held it answered, if he could even be called a man. He looked no older than 15, barely a child. Several voices repeated the same after him. "Alright then. I want this job nice and clean. We finally have the resources and support to free ourselves. No one better (I am an emo and cry at night) up. Move in five.... Four... Three... Two... One - Go! Go! Go!" At the last communication, the teen and the men, no older than he, raced up and charged around the building, fast approaching several armed guards and a small steel hut in front of a tower emitting a soft blue glow. The guards quickly raised their weapons and yelled out, "Stop! Or we'll shoot!" The teens, of course, did not listen. The pulled up bags and began to throw rocks at the soldiers. Taking the rocks strait to their helmets, the soldiers nudged and grunted. They refused to fire on children, humanity had grown to humane for that. However, these children were firmly in the hands of their leader, who told them to overwhelm the guards and kill them. Upon reaching the guards, a fight broke out. The guards didn't hold back hitting the attackers with the butts of their swords, after all, these wounds could easily be tended too by medical care. However, the children were not as caring as the guards. They drew knifes from their belts and slashed at them men. By pure sheer number, twenty to two, the guards were knocked down. One of the children proceeded to pick up a guardsman's rifle, and end it. A particle right to the forehead. The soldier's helms were unable to stop it, much less at point blank range. After finishing off the other, the kids ran up to the hut, blew the gate open, and quickly shot the two workers inside. Following that, one of them pulled up his radio and contacted their leader. "Ken," the boy said, "You there?" "Yeah Kit," the voice from earlier answered. "How you did?" The boy smiled, "Got a kill." He held the rifle up proudly. "Nice. We've been over this many times, you remember how to open the shield's right?" "Yea." "Perfect, do it now." "Kay." Kit then set the radio back onto his waist and began to click away on a keyboard located on the console, which was now stained with blood. He smiled, enjoying the click on the buttons on his fingers. The cold steel gave him a strange tingle. After a few lines were typed on the hovering screen in front of him, he clicked enter and ran outside, pulling the radio back to his head. "Alright Ken, done." "Nice, same here. The rest of you?" Several other voices joined in, confirming their share. Kit's party then climbed onto the building they were hidden behind just minutes ago and looked up to the massive shields. The tower behind the hut had stopped glowing and giving off the blue vibe. Following that, a thunderous screeching drove the kids to cover their ears. They all turned back to town, to the center of the city. High above, the shield wall began to retract back to Earth, in ten directions. It's speed was rather slow, but freedom was at hand. All of them ran to the edge of the wall and stood ecstatically just meters away, being unable to wait to run into the free grass, there was no grass in the cities. Many of them wanted to climb onto the trees, they had never even touched a tree before. Then, Kit looked up and noticed saw the sky as the walls retracted. He could now see two skies, on through the walls, one in reality. He was shocked. All of their smiles disappeared. The vivid blue sky, with clouds swimming through it freely, had gave way to a dead and dull one. Not one cloud was visible, and it's shade as on the verge of black. The good thing of it was: the stars were visible, but so was the distant yellow sun. The walls then fell ahead of them and revealed what the Earth had really become... A place of sorrow, a dead place, void of life. The green and lust enduing grass had become dead and black. The trees which stood there moments ago had transformed into dead remnants of their past, if a tree stood there at all. Many of them had turned into dust and air. The children were shocked. The world they expected, the world they had always seen beyond the glass was all a lie, a painful reminder of the once fruitful past of Earth. Humanity had killed it's planet. After thinking it couldn't get any worse, it did. The children felt a strong breeze coming from behind them. The air that was giving the city life was being dragged outside by nature. Intelligence quickly told Kit the world outside was dead, completely void of life. That the domes were the only centers of life still in existence on Earth. The air, the oxygen, outside the domes was gone. The domes were the only thing shielding the cradles of life from being sucked by nature outside, in efforts of restoring itself. Kit quickly dropped the radio and ran back to the hut. He began to type quickly away on the keyboard. He held his breath, it was beginning to feel light. After several long seconds of typing, he finished. The screen began to blink read, the words "Caution" and "Warning" taking turns flashing brightly. Kit closed the door quickly, only one of his friends was smart enough to follow him into the safety of the artificial life support systems which gave life to the city. Since the shield was broken, all air outside the buildings was being sucked away into the wonder. Kit looked through a small glass window at the outside, there were several bodies lying on the floor, dull, gray, lifeless. The domes were once again rising, the beautiful world returning. Kit grunted, he looked at his friend and spoke with rage. "If Ken survived that, I'll kill him myself." The other boy stared at his friend and tried to smile and laugh, but his body didn't allow him. Instead, he just lay breathing heavily by the wall. |
