How do you reconcile your beliefs about the free market with those about controlling recreational drug use?

This obviously doesn't apply to those who believe in both the free market and decriminalisation of drugs :P

I beleive that certain drugs that are currently illegal et cetera should be legal but should cary duty- like alcohol etc. but for the good of the people- certain things should remain untouched.

Yup, that is true. Either way, we are not particularly fond of drugs in Hamsters and Fluffynibble, the people are smart and know how to take care of their bodies!

Pfft- yeah- pfft- I was just kidding. <_< No, I musta read your post wrong and got confuzzled. Sorry. Meh, my first post was kinda a joke though anyways- we do believe the people can do what they want with their own bodies, but we don't necessarily promote it.

...

*drops cigars*

Whut? You don'tz promol- bleh

*spits out tobacco and marijuana*

promote, it? Whut? Why? But I zought... oh forget it, whatev... ev... e... dawng I tinks I'm gunna puke, agai...

*This part has been removed due to reference of drug use in barf- which may be frightening and obscene for children under the age of 13- and for intense language that has been never before witnessed- which may cause seizures, strokes, cardiac arrest, and intense excreting of toxic anal gasses that can destroy the surrounding environment. Thank you for your cooperation.*

...

"...to get that off my chest. But mez still feelz terrible... I think I'm gunna get high. That'll help." :)

I thought this was about the free market.

Look, I may be a Gumby, but I'm not a total idiot...

Portugal legalized drugs but not the trafficking and selling of drugs, as a result drug use has in fact gone down.

Also hemp is a very valuable cash crop. Aside from the THC bearing parts the actual plants themselves can be used to make paper of a higher quality then that created from tree pulp, add to this that you can plant at least two crops a year, it can grow basically anywhere and you have a very efficient means of lifting a lot of people out of poverty, saving the rainforests and enriching the government.

Some interesting facts

- The Australian state of Queensland has consistently lifted its self up out of crippling debt by legalizing social vices and taxing them heavily, namely gambling : lol:

- 3% of Yemen is arable. 80% of Yemen's arable land and the majority of its potable water is used to grow Quat, a legal (in Yemen) plant with opiate like qualities when chewed. It is a serious problem in Yemen with the nearly the entire country being habitual users. It is rated alongside a continued war against separatist elements in the south and the growing threat of Al'Queda through out the nation as one of Yemen’s greatest problems.

But isn't taxing the drugs artifically inflating the price and therefore both contrary to a free market and a form of limitiation on their use? The original question is a good one - how does one reconcile the statutory control of things like drugs with a free market?

Because drug use, especially prolonged drug use, of just about any sort seems to have an overall negative effect on the mental abilities and productivity of people. I know from having watched several friends degenerate. However, I'm all for the full legalization of drugs. This would bring part of the black market into the legal market and put more money into the system. And, hopefully, all of the non-worthies who decide to dedicate themselves to drugs due to their new ease of purchase/whatever, would get themselves killed, graciously removing themselves from the gene pool.
