Andreas Elections to Commence

From left to right, Jago Piedra of the Hadarist Party, Marcos Collin of the Central Alliance, and Julian Puniforte of the Socialists and Unionists List.

Elections have arrived here on the Kingdom of Andreas, and it is with no small measure of excitement that entire buildings across the islands have been covered with banners and slogans supporting different parties in the closely contested elections. The conservative, nationalistic Hadarist Party possesses 28.1% of the vote, Marcos Collin of the fiscally and socially liberal[1] Central Alliance has 26.2%, and the youthful Julian Puniforte of the socially and fiscally left wing Socialist and Unionists List (SUL) possesses 41.2%. The elections will be over the nation's 71 districts, with 7 extra seats given to the winning party as a bonus.

Marcos Collin and Jago Piedra have made a public gentleman's agreement that should they have a majority between them, they will sign a coalition agreement before the two months' deadline and govern together in an effort to keep the popular Julian Puniforte away from power. This is the first such agreement between any party in the past thirty years. They have both commented on the deal to be an 'interim measure' and that they are 'not concerned that Julian Puniforte will win, as our nation has a strong tradition of capitalism and commercialism.' In fact, there is still a good chance that weak voters for Puniforte called Pink Socialists could be easily swayed by positive appeals to labor unions and farmers, which purely vote for the SUL since it is the only party to advocate for them.

We have conducted a profile of all three candidates:

Jago Pierda is the current Prime Minister of Andreas and a political behemoth. Serving four three year terms in office, he has only recently faltered, due to widening inequality, mismanagement of finances, and his increasingly authoritarian bend. However, it still remains that he has a postitive track record of leading the country through a remarkable period of growth that has only recently begun to flatten. He has promised to fire corrupt advisers and to attract foreign investments into the island nation's economy.

Marcos Collin is the current opposition leader of Andreas, and a veteran politician. He has been working in the field since he was 21, so at 56 years he is hailed by many as a leader oriented on compromise and reconciliation. He put these skills to work three years ago, passing a gay marriage bill through the house despite minimal support from the populace and the Hadarist Party. The bill was however attached to a free trade deal and a tax cut bill, and Jago could not refuse out of fear that he might be branded as a hypocrite. This odd move warranted Marcos a place in the nation's history as one of the great political geniuses of the nation. He may lack charisma, but he has what few other candidates do, respect.

Julian Puniforte is a new politican. The son of the previous SUL leader Valer Puniforte, he has risen in the political ranks to become a key player in the elections due to his youthful appearance and brilliant political maneuvers. Just over the age of 32, he has a vast base among disgruntled college students, and has led demonstrations to Parliament House frequently. He had taken advantage of the growing income rift between rich and poor along with Jago's increasing corruption to advocate democratic socialism. He also advocated for an unified judiciary over powerful regional courts, seeking to protect the nation's constitution from regional interests.

[1] Liberal in this sense means loose on both social and economic restrictions.

Major Andrean Parties Release Manifestos

Posted Image
With the consent of Queen Saba II, the parties' manifestos have been released.

Politics
25th Autumber 2029
Ikalya, Andreas
By Petra Castelmon

At an ornate luncheon in the Queen's Palace, the leaders of the three major parties of Andreas revealed their manifestos for approval from Queen Saba II. She read through them and declared her approval of the three of them. Although Her Highness is not shy about her conservatism, she has also been a neutral, responsible leader through the election, as is tradition. After the comfy luncheon which consisted of mutton, clam soup, a full pig, three different types of wine, mint ice cream, peach pies, and a light drink of lemon juice, the three party leaders emerged out of the Queen's Balcony to address the crowds. Each one emerged in order of their last names.

Marcos Collin of the Central Alliance emerged first. He cracked his knuckled and signed "My mission for the Kingdom is simple, to aim for a strong economy, a free people, the reduction of unnecessary and bloated social welfare programs, and the reformation of the state among minimalist lines. I seek a government that seeks only to protect the citizens, and educate them. A minimalist state is truly a free state, and to tolerate massive military, welfare, and health institutions is a wrong upon our people. Anything beyond the protection of the freedom of our people is a drastic overreach and a violation of our civil and human rights. A vote for the Central Alliance is a vote for freedom."

The crowd was silent. It soon became clear that the speech had gone over their heads.

Jago was the next man to appear at the balcony, to modest applause. He stretched his arms before signing "You and me, we've been together for twelve years. The Hadarist Party has worked to clear the streets of Andreas, to make sure that degenerate filth has been swept from our streets. I expanded our military to pursue our national interests, and increased free trade to ensure our prosperity. It hasn't been an easy twelve years. I won't lie about that. But Andreas, we have much to do. The groundwork I have laid these past twelve years can be put to use today."

There was applause through the crowd, and Jago came in smiling.

Julian came out as the last man to speak. He came out to applause too, though not as much as Jago. He flickered with his hands "I can tell you right now, that the nation needs reform! All the time under the Hadarist and Centrist governments, we have done nothing! Andreas yet remains an insignificant set of dots on the map, without hope or destiny! But this can be changed! For I propose to you a New Socialism, a socialism that will promote free trade and take down tariffs so that the economy may grow. But at the same time, we cannot delay in ensuring the common welfare of the nation! A strong Andreas is our destiny, and it shall be fufilled! No more shall we tolerate inferior pay, inferior care, and third world standards for such a great nation as ours!"

The crowd burst into complete applause.

Julian was the clear winner in his speeches, combining Andrean nationalism with a socialist bend without veering into fascism or jingoism. He also garnered the support of the nation by distilling his complicated manifesto into just a few points, and introduced New Socialism as a counterbalance against the failed government his father Valer tried to have with Marcos. Indeed, it seems all the more likely now that Julian will win the Ministry.

Socialists and Unionists List Wins!

Posted Image
Julian Puniforte before his victory speech

Politics
1st November 2029
Ikalya, Andreas
By Adrian Lime

Julian Puniforte has won a hotly contested election, sources told the paper. The election have led to the first Socialists and Unionists List (SUL) majority in the nation's history. It also was the first election in the nation's history that the SUL wasn't relegated to third-party status. With the elections over and the SUL left with a clear mandate to govern, the Hadarist Party has been backtracking, already making moves for the 2032 parliamentary elections.

Prime Minister Jago Piedra of the Hadarist Party announced immediately after the election results were finalized that he would resign to ease the return of the government, and that he would also step down from the leadership of the party after his illustrious political career, filled with four electoral victories and only two defeats.

Piedra declared in his concession speech "I have lost today. But I do not feel sad, for I had the great honor and privilege of serving this Kingdom for twelve long, illustrious years. I brought prosperity, strength, and a national spirit back into the everyday consciousness. And for that I am proud. But I know that my long days in office are closed, and I resign from both the ministry and the leadership of the Hadarist Party, in the hopes that a competent politician shall replace me."

The short speech was said by many analysts to be "Touching and sentimental without his (Piedra's) usual polarizing statements."

The event was radically different at the SUL camp, having won 36 seats plus seven extra seats being awarded as winner bonuses. Red flags were hoisted up and the crowd began to raise up banners reading "Julian per Andreas!" In fact, the crowd outside of the Socialists and Unionists List actually extended over several blocks. The vast size of the jubilation meant that roadblocks had to be set up to protect the crowd for the duration of the celebration. In the middle of this scene of Jubilation, Julian emerged beaming, dressed in a sharp suit. He took his place at the podium.

He began to sign "Today, I am proud to announce that the Socialists and Unionists List has been given a mandate to govern as of today. And with this victory, I shall introduce to this nation New Socialism. Too long, Old Socialism has focused on economic isolation, on planning how many trousers are manufactured each year, a base socialism that can only be enforced by violence. New Socialism shall be a socialism of openess! A socialism that shall make sure the old, the ill, and the poor are provided for! I shall seek to ally with Carpathia and Moldova, Falsea, and the United Socialist Empire as a member of the TA for the good of this nation! Long live Andreas, long live the Queen, and long live New Socialism!"

The crowd burst into cheers.

Puniforte has a challenge ahead of him. He has to lift the nation out of an era of economic stagnation and division and increase flagging population growth. He also has to solve a question that Piedra has left behind. Piedra expanded the military beyond sustainable means, trying to protect the nation from perceived threats to their sovereignty and to begin projecting power abroad. However, Piedra was prevented from doing so by the Centrist Alliance. The question therefore is, will Julian cut the bloated military budget, or put the army to use? Only time can determine if Puniforte can not only cope with these pressures, but surpass them The destiny of Andreas rests on the young prime minister's shoulders.

First Six Year Plan Passed

Posted Image
Building apartments for the poor within the nation is a primary goal of the First Stage

Politics
3rd December 2029
Ikalya, Andreas
By Cornelis Lepindus

Julian Puniforte's popularity ratings soared from 54% to 74% today after he passed the Six Year Plan, a sweeping economic programme that will be unfolding in three stages of two years each. He called it "A resounding victory for the party and for the nation's economy." It is perhaps the most ambitious economic programme undertaken in modern Andreas, for it covers everything from healthcare to private housing to industrial resources. The law was passed easily, but both the Hadarist Party and Central Alliance tried to leave to ensure the parliament did not reach a quorum. However, two Green Party MPs, one Andrean Unity Party MP, plus an independent arrived to the session, ensuring the 60% (or 47 seats) quorum was filled.

The law was personally designed and developed by the Socialist and Unionist List. The goal outlined in the law was "to transition easily into a 'socialist trade economy', where unnecessary surpluses are eradicated, and the nation develops economic diversification with a key focus being on human welfare." The three stages of the plan are outlined below, each taking two years each to develop.

First Stage: Groundwork for the Socialist Future
  • Free educations at all stages, including college and vocational training
*Option to seek a Dual Major to protect oneself in the world's ever-changing economy
*Education is mandatory on all three levels
  • A CEO to worker pay ratio of 15:1, and an option for lowering it at the start of the second stage to 7:1
  • Heavy manufacturing, lumber, and fisheries are to be brought under the government's domain
  • Universal provision of healthcare, with an emphasis on preventive care to keep the workforce healthy and productive
  • A production goal on each company, based on the workers and resources they have
  • An economic goal of universal employment
  • A plan with goals based on growth in the service and technology sectors
  • Managers must be elected once yearly by their peers

Second Stage: Employing the Socialist Path
  • Tourism as the largest industry in Andreas will become nationalized, but the workers retain their right to elect their managers and top-tier employees
  • Private schools as a bourgeois institution will be phased out, and their highly qualified teachers spread out across the nation to equalize opportunity
  • All raw materials will fall under the domain of the government
  • All companies shall be able to elect not only managers but executives, wether they be nationalized or not
  • Public promotion of the arts as a means to inspire, entertain, and enlighten the proletariat
  • Reducing surpluses that may arise by means of converting the Treasury to an independent planning bureau
  • This independent planning bureau will employ checks and balances to keep it on the socialist path, and the director will be appointed to six-year terms
  • Technology will be donated to the treasury to help them with the complicated tasks of planning an economy
  • Companies will be investigated quarterly for the actual demand and usefulness of their goods
  • Adversitements must be screened for practical use before being aired by ANIMAS (Andrean National Inter-Media Airing Station), the pre-existing national television network
  • Nationalization of transport networks and cutting unnecessary items to lower transport expenses

Third Stage: Preparing for the Communist Future
  • All industries not yet previously nationalized will open up at least 20% of their stocks to government-run mutual funds
  • A reserve of money will be stored to ensure that economic conditions will remain stable in case of unexpected failure
  • Social security checks shall be regarded obsolete, with food checks, elderly housing, and free travel passes
  • With full employment reached, unemployment checks will also be rendered obsolete
  • Self-sufficiency measures such as gardening, first aid training, and military training shall be provided by the government
  • Companies can only store 10% of their gains as 'profit', the rest of it is paid to the workers
  • Partial devolution shall be granted to the regions based on cultural lines

This law attracted vehement criticism from the Hadarist Party and the Central Alliance for its socialist policies and nationalization of key industries, but it is seen as a wise move by the populace. One key provision they tend to be more in support of are self-reliance training, a worker to CEO pay ratio, and devolution as was predicted by party experts. With this program out of the way, Puniforte has acquired more political support than ever before to push forward with extra reforms.

Lady Onoria to Marry Prince Edmund of Goldecia

Posted ImagePosted Image
Lady Onoria revealed that she had been secretly dating Edmund, and is now engaged

Andreas
4th January 330
Ikalya, Andreas
By Maria Legionarii

Glad tidings are upon the island of Andreas today as Onoria dispelled rumors of her love life, declaring that she was engaged to be married to Edmund, a Goldecian prince. The nation began spontaneously celebrating, many crowing into the plazas of Ikalya in jubilation. After a tense election and a sweeping economic programme, Andreas now has the opportunity to relax. Vendors reported a 'royal boom' in products related to Lady Onoria such as knockoffs of her famous dresses.

Queen Saba II declared herself "overjoyed at the joyous occasion within the family" and declared that as an engagement gift, she was bestowing upon them the beautiful Olivi Estate, named for its large grove of olive trees but the manor is also blessed with large pools and a vegetable garden tended for by a staff of butlers. The Queen is also providing the venue for the wedding at her palace. It is not surprising that she has bestowed so many gifts on the couple knowing Onoria and Saba's friendship.

There is only a small issue with Edmund's Salbanist religion. While Andreas as a whole does not discriminate against religion, the Ivory Accord of 67 RE bans non-Hadarists from inheriting property or titles in the nation. However, Onoria and Edmund have allowed their future children to choose their religion and therefore their inheritance. The Act sprang from the oppression of the Sopricanist Raal Empire over the Hadarist-majority Andreans, and with a tradition-oriented royal family, it is difficult to eliminate the old laws.

In Onoria's demesne of Ancorragia, people are eagerly awaiting the marriage with a sort of pride. It was not long ago to them that Onoria was just a small child and the marriage has stirred sentimental feelings among the older members of the populace. A man of sixty years we talked to at a bar called the Limping Elk put the nation's feelings in simple terms "I think that *hics* Lady Onoria *hics* is growing up purty nice, and this Edmund *hics* is a nice guy. We might have some legal hiccups *hics* there and there but this place is eagerly awaiting their new lord."

Queen Saba II: Frequent Flyer

Posted Image
Andreas One, shared by the Prime Minister and the Queen

Andreas
6th January 330
Ikalya, Andreas
By Cario Vegeleri

The queen came under criticism by Ricardo Aureli for her recent habit of travelling to Lomarre and Austlenburg, denouncing it as "...bourgeois, and wholly undignified." He also criticized how no diplomatic results ever seemed to appear from the Queen's visits to the Arkausan Confederation. She was photographed at the Royal Palace of Lomarre, having a luncheon at Manor Bodum, and in front of one of Austlenburg's leading private schools. The Andrean public has been perplexed by her purpose for the repeated visits. However, the public still gives her a higher approval rating than Puniforte, 87% to 72%.

The Queen also faced rumors that she was abusing public funds to pay for fuel and other items. However, Prime Minister Julian Puniforte came to her defense. Puniforte said "The Queen is of astounding moral character, and is not one to rob money. Or nation is blessed with enlightened monarchs that do not exploit their people, and Her Highness is continuing in that tradition. In fact, I'll venture to say that King Emeritus Simon has been proud of her upstanding behavior. I cannot inform you of her duties, but I assure you that these travels serve a purpose and are therefore covered by government money."

The monarchy used to be the wealthiest people on Andreas, entitled to huge endowments due to the king's trade networks and the fact that before the Act of Parliament 235, the king was responsible for all tax allocations. Now, they are on the bottom of the "Top Fifteen Wealthiest", with Queen Saba and her nearest 20 relatives earning an endowment of 200,000 caprecs yearly for a paltry total of four million dollars. The more minor royalty make their money running their lands and in business. In fact, the richest Andrean is Carito Marinas who used his small demense as a base to create his technology company.

The Queen promised to seek to lower her travel costs, and through Julian Puniforte she said "This burst of travelling will die down, once things have fallen into place." The scandal has turned quite a few heads in the nation and caused some discussion in parliament. Nevertheless, the unique Andrean bond between Hadar, the Queen, and the peoples of the island cannot be broken by any amount of jet fuel.

Law Passed to Outline Rights of Foreign Industries

Posted Image
Andreas' film industry might actually benefit from the law, analysts say.

Politics
14th January 330
Ikalya, Andreas
By Cario Vegeleri

Amidst recent furor over nationalization across Oracia, Julian Puniforte has decided to clarify the rights of foreign industries. The Hadarist Party and the Central Alliance decided to show up in the chambers of parliament since their previous attempt to try and block a quorum from forming failed, but they both voted against the law in protest. Julian Puniforte hailed the law, saying that "It protect our nation's newfound socialist spirit, without veering to crush the spirit of capitalist countries. Socialism you see, only works across the world when other countries can marvel at our experiment."

The law was engineered with economic growth in mind, with the SUL working alongside more conservative economists to create an ideal solution that would protect free trade and Andrean workers. Those on the left edge of the party said the law was "counterrevolutionary" and that "we need to nationalize a company fully, like Cardohesia and United Chieftains have been so noble to do." Nonetheless, the vote was whipped therefore the more communist MPs voted in agreement with Puniforte's socialist plan.

The law in short provides for a wage at or above the poverty line and a mandatory 20% stake in foreign companies if they use either land or produce a tangible good. However, foreign corporations can pay their citizens however they want, and do not have to practice democratic management. If the companies refuse to implement these laws within a grace period of two years, their goods will be confiscated for pay due to noncompliance. The full text of the law is listed below.

Foreign Assets Act of 330

  • The government will pay willing foreign companies that have either land or produce tangible goods for 20% of their stocks as a ‘baseline’ for their stakes and holdings in Andreas proper.
*A baseline shall be defined as the stock initially owned by the government, which it may buy and sell at a later date.
  • All industries that have either land or produce tangible goods shall pay Andrean citizens a wage at or above the poverty line, which as of present is 15,751 Caprecs yearly.
*Foreign citizens are exempt from the above law, and will be paid as is seen fit solely by the business themselves.
  • Foreign citizens working for corporations within Andrean borders shall have a right to access the healthcare and transport system for free provided they reside within the nation for at least 220 days of the year.
  • The foreign companies within Andreas are not required to practice democratic management.
  • Companies seeking to establish themselves in Andreas will have 20% of their fees related to establishing and starting up the company paid off in exchange for the aforementioned 20% of stock holdings.
  • All non-complying industries are free to exit the nation within the two year grace period after this law has been passed, and their materials are considered protected from forced seizure.
  • All companies that refuse to comply after the grace period will have their items, tools, or land seized in replacement for the monetary value of the good itself as prescribed by international customs. The good shall then be available for other corporations to use, so long as this provision does not violate patents or copyrights thereof.
  • If handing over the items or tools would violate a patent or copyright, then it shall be scrapped and sold.
  • This law, unless modified by court or an issue with international convention, shall be protected from modification for a period of ten years.

Analysts have however, found an interesting loophole at the beginning of the law. Since a digital film is not tangible nor does it actually use land, it may actually protect foreign film industries from having to give up 20% of their assets so long their studios are based elsewhere. It could actually be applied to other products-typically creative and electronic-that do not use land or create a tangible good such as E-books or the aforementioned digital film industry. This law is expected to at least ease anxiety over a full, unpaid nationalization of all foreign goods that has pervaded Oracia recently.

Monumental Times in Andreas

Stefano IV (pictured) declared his bethrothal to Saba II

Andreas
15th January 330
Ikalya, Andreas
By Tomas Garcera

Andreans celebrated in the streets of the capital Ikalya as Stefano Di Haggia IV announced his love for Queen Saba Marinas II, dispelling the "Fuel Scandal of 330" as it has come to be called in the tabloids. She had been visiting Lomarre more often than some circles thought necessary, so some MPs seeked to cut her fuel allocations. These same MPs quickly backtracked after the announcement was made, congratulating the Queen and her fortunate betrothal. Among the most jubilant were the right-wing Hadarist Party members, with the newly anointed leader Fidel Antiquiti saying "It is good for this nation that the Queen has married a proper Hadarist king of an enlightened nation."

Julian Puniforte also announced his pleasure, saying "Her Highness had been grieving since King Consort Aurelian passed this earth as a young man, and ever since her travels to meet Stefano IV, she has been gladder than ever. Also, Prince Nestor is adjusting well to his new step-father. In fact, I've heard they've been shooting skeets together recently."

Andreans experienced an outburst of patriotism, with sales of flags and buntings soaring as Andreans take a new pride in their nation's new union with a great power. The Kingdom is also eagerly celebrating their recent admission to the Trilateral Alliance, although recent debates have also worried citizens. Batavian and Cardohesian rhetoric have left the nation largely confused and Puniforte said about the situation that he was "Proceeding with an abundance of due caution." The recent dispute has dropped his poll ratings down to a still-significant 64%. The betrothal has lifted the nation's hearts during this troubled time.

It was recently announced that if the betrothal were to continue to marriage, the descendants of Saba II and Stefano IV would belong to a new cadet of both families called the Piedmontes, a dynasty that analysts have said will hold enormous power in the future. Nevertheless, the Piedmontes will not be succeeding to any throne in particular.

Puniforte Breaks Silence on Carpathian Crisis

Posted Image
Puniforte gave his speech outlining Andrean policy today

Oracia
6th February 330
Ikalya, Andreas
By Aggripion Marcel

Recent discussions about a blockade have stricken fear and uncertainty into the heart of the nation, lowering Puniforte's ratings just months after he entered office. But today, he made an official declaration to a joint session of parliament. He was expected to refuse to response for the duration of the crisis, but he defied those expectations as he took to the floor to give his daily opening address, upon which the Prime Minister asks his fellow legislators to recognize and remedy an issue. He took this opportunity to give a speech that earned grudging appreciation from the Central Alliance which had so long opposed him.

We are only taking excerpts from his hour-long speech that arrive at his important points. He signed to the parliament "I am saddened by the conflicts that have arisen between Carpathia and Moldova with the nations of the world, and the politically charged rhetoric that has arisen as a result. I give this speech to say, I seek solutions." He then said "Carpathia and Moldova has taken a strong stand against fascism across the world"This line drew complaints from the Hadarist Party but Puniforte nevertheless proceeded. "...and the Andrean people revere them for that. Our socialism developed out of a combination of Carpathian, Montarian, and Arrese Socialism, so we owe them a deep ideological debt."

He then signed "But Carpathia's actions as of late could promote fascism. The coalition between nations such as Batavia and Medo-Kubzania prove this very point. The Carpathian people are near and dear to our hearts, but we believe that violence is not the answer to fascism. You see, Socialism is naturally superior to fascism due to its belief in solidtary and a peaceful future for all, while fascism seeks to press nations under their boot, pushing them into a monolithic mold that rarely truly fits. But to react with nuclear violence drags our platform down. Indeed, our experiment is naturally superior, and therefore no violence is needed to preserve it."

He concluded his hour-long address with "We will not break ties with Carpathia, for to do so would give the capitalists victory. We do however, believe their actions will only end in hurting the world revolution. The Carpathian culture itself is proof that the Socialist spirit is in itself defiant. The revolution of socialism is not forced, it is slow and it comes in stages. But it is sure."

The Central Alliance praised Puniforte for his "message, but not the Socialist creed that is strapped along with it." The former leader of the Hadarist Party Jago Piedra criticized it entirely, saying "Batavia and Medo-Kubzania are not fascist nations. We may disagree, but we believe that foreign intervention is necessary to combat the Carpathian menace." His replacement Fidel Antiquiti was less combative, saying "We need an economic embargo, plain and simple. It is not about politics, it is about common sense."
