The Synod of the Holy Faith Votes to Allow Women Archpriests

Posted Image

The Synod of the Church of the Holy Faith have voted to allow Women Archpriests. The move, which has been heavily critisiced by the Conservative Wing of the Church, comes after a personal intervention from His Serene Highness Prince Anarion II in favour of the motion. Women Priests of the Holy Faith have been allowed for 37 years, but the move to allow them to be ordained to the higher office has been stalled for decades. Some point to the opposition of Prince Elendil III, Prince Anarion's father, who was a staunch Conservative. The move comes at a time when the general population of Mittalmar is becoming more Liberal, while the ruling classes are largely Conservative. Miriel Palanzon, MP for the Social Democats, welcomed the move. "It brings Mittalmar into the modern era. Women can be Members of Parliament, judges, diplomats, it was absurd that the Church took so long to do this." Palanzon, an outspoken Republican, was asked if she welcomed the apparent intervention of Prince Anarion. "I do, although I like to think of it as a private citizen of influence changing the mind of others. I do not believe Mittalmar should be ruled by a man just because he fell out of the right womb, but one battle at a time."

Others were far less impressed. Amandil Bankur, President for the Committee for the Protection of Family Life, released a statement saying the vote was just "the latest step of the liberal elite to erode the traditions and beliefs of the Faithful."

Earwen Eldalote

With two Archpriest positions currently vacant it is expected that Prince Anarion will announce the first female Archpriests by the end of the year. Commentators say the most likely women to be named is Earwen Eldalote, a Deacon who currently teaches Theology at Mittalmar Theological University. Earwen, who has two PhDs, is one of the leading intellectuals in the Church as well as a popular and vibrant preacher. When asked she said she "Welcomes the vote," When asked if she thought the Prince would announce her as the next Archpriest she said, "Whatever the Holy Ones decide will be, as for me I will await Our Gods decision."
