Adehn to Join the Commonwealth of Nations
327 April 14 by Kevan Kreim and Damon Furgis

The Commonwealth of Nations is an international organization headquartered in Halvadag, Lanlania, renown for being the single, largest organization of its kind in Caprecia. It is an economics-centric organization that encourages greater ties, increased co-dependency, and mutual cooperation.

The Vas’alma revealed today ongoing negotiations with the Kasjare of the Commonwealth concerning Adehn’s position in the international organization. Adehn has been an observer of the organization since 322, though has held strong ties with the organization—and, more specifically, the Lanlanians—for their help during the civil war and its immediate aftermath.

Indeed, since the end of the civil war, Adehnite relations with Commonwealth states have grown steadily stronger, with an influx of business and reconstruction assistance originating from Lanlania, Sainam, and even Telvan. This has paid off with all parties, with Adehnites enjoying a booming economy and the Commonwealth parties tapping into the Adehnite market and its resources.

Of course, some have decried the Vas’alma as being weak and catering to the Lanlanians—who compose approximately a third of Adehn’s exports and whose businesses have expanded in Adehn significantly over the last decade. Though fringe members of the Gastr’ad—largely from House Hevat—have advocated expelling the foreigners and advocate a pure Adehn, facts suggest that such a move would be disastrous for Adehn—instantly destroying over half a million jobs made possible by foreign companies. This is ignoring the fact that such a move would likely see sanctions from Commonwealth governments, further damaging the Adehnite economy by attacking nearly two-thirds of her exports.

These heavy ties are considered dangerous by some analysts, who warn that Adehn’s dependency on Commonwealth business would make it difficult for Adehn to distance herself from the organization and its members. However, as the Vas’alma has championed, some believe that closer ties with Commonwealth states would be in Adehn’s best interest:

The Commonwealth states have been immensely helpful to our recover. Since 318—the very year our civil war came to an end—the Commonwealth and her members have provided Adehn with nearly 40 billion in financial aid, much of which through favorable loans. Not only have they helped us at our weakest, but they’ve also welcomed us into their community—allowing us participation in their multitude of programs. It is my belief that joining this association of states—states which have been immensely friendly and considerate to Adehn—would open greater opportunities for us.

In her speech, the Vas’alma went on to reiterate that by fully joining the Commonwealth, Adehn’s would solidify its strong relationship with many major Caprecian states. Experts have advised that joining the organization would likely lead to entry into the Commonwealth’s Free Trade Zone, Open Business Zone, and Common Travel Area—which would benefit the Adehnite economy with higher export margins, greater business, and increased tourism.

It should be noted that no agreement has been released, nor any document submitted to the Gastr’ad. However, given the Vas’alma’s considerable support in the legislature and the benefit predicted, many believe it is only a matter of time before Adehn signs on.
