Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs proposes new ASK US theme to Immigration and Citizenship
The Coalition proposed a lengthy policy programme on Citizenship and Immigration, however fell short of full immigration reform. The Conservatives have now proposed what they would like to see reformed.
11:48- 9th April 2027
IMMIGRATION - What's been announced today isn't government policy, it isn't a legislative proposal however it is a signal from the Conservatives that they want to go further than is currently being done so.
The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Joshua Brammer, proposed a five point requirement for Immigration in Aurentina to enter the country and to claim citizenship and announced today that the Conservatives would consult with Prosperitas and the Social Democrats on the proposal. However, he did say that if neither Prosperitas or the Social Democrats would back the proposal that it would become a full manifesto pledge in the 2029 election which a Majority Conservative government would deliver.
The five point plan was given the acronym ASK US, the Secretary of State said the plan stood for the following:
- A Reasonable and Sound Link to Aurentina (Either through Family or Employment Opportunities)
- A range of Practical Skills suitable for Aurentina's requirements and needs
- Wide Ranging Knowledge of Aurentine Culture and Law
- Understanding of Aurentine History and Institutions
- Stability in Life (Lack of Criminal Convictions, Stable Income, Stable Employment)
ASK US would become the main themes of the applications for Residence Visa's with a new test being introduced to be completed during the application stage, in addition the Citizenship Test would be completely revamped from a simple understanding of current day Aurentina to incorporate the ASK US mentality with questions ranging on the personal circumstances of the applicant, skills they hold and what Aurentina is looking for, Aurentine History, Culture and Laws, Institutions of Aurentina including Parliament and other such notable ones and questions on their income.
The Conservatives formally confirmed they would adopt the policy in it's next election manifesto, unless either Prosperitas or the Social Democrats agreed to back the proposals.
Prosperitas is reportedly "considering" the proposals, whilst the Social Democrats said they would "engage and provide constructive criticism" for the proposals.

Compulsory Duck Ownership Act defeated at Second Vote
The legislation proposed by Independent MP Jacob Rogg was supported at preliminary vote following the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition finding the proposal amusing.
13:29 - 12th April 2027
PARLIAMENT - Nobody expected it to pass into law, it hasn't done that but the Compulsory Duck Ownership Act did reveal one thing about politicians in Aurentina.
They're able to see the funny side of their job.
Nobody ever expected the legislation to pass preliminary vote however after the Prime Minister described the legislation as "amusing" the Government backed the legislation, whilst the Leader of the Opposition said the proposal was a "good waste of parliamentary time"
So, could the legislation have ever become law?
Probably Not...
However, we will now begin to be seeing legislative proposals from Opposition Parties as their "Opposition Bills" are now available for this parliament with the Social Democrats having 3, the Liberal Party holding 2, the Green Party holding 2, No2TheState holding 1 and Independents holding 1 which has already been used.
Aurentina Today understands that it is unlikely we'll see anymore legislation this funny, however Social Democrats have hinted their proposals would focus on "equality, responsibility and democracy" without giving specific details about their intentions.

Council of Ministers meets for first time - Agenda including the Economy, Budget discipline and Devolution of Powers to regional assemblies
The Council of Ministers has formally met for the first time today, the agenda that was publicly released indicated that the main topics would be economic issues, budgets and regional funding and devolution of powers to regional assemblies.
19:23 - 15th April 2027
COUNCIL OF MINISTERS - Well, it must have been liberating for the Prime Minister to sit in the Council of Ministers being backed by more Conservatives than ever before.
The Council of Minister's met today with the Prime Minister briefing the Council on the state of the national budget, the economy and his plan for the future of regional assemblies. He indicated that he wanted to devolve several areas of legislative power to Regional Assemblies however insisted that there had to be a uniform approach and not a "nit pick" across regional executives, or in other words every regional assembly gets the same or nothing at all.
It is understood that he recommended three initial areas where power could be devolved within the current Parliament these were tax collection of national taxes/FairTax, Education and Healthcare. He did not go into the extent of how far the devolution would go in these areas, however he said that it was "right" that "regional assemblies played a role in the national agenda".
The Blackford First Minister, a Conservative who is being backed in regional executive by the Blackford Independence Party said that he would back the devolution of powers to the regional assembly although that "future devolution should be fully considered".

Prime Minister announces Pay Cuts to Elected Representatives & a new ER Tax
The Prime Minister proposed a pay cut of 25% to all elected representatives in Aurentina, including MP's, Senators and Assembly Members.
14:21 - 20th April 2027
ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES - It's a brave move by the Prime Minister, today he announced that all elected representatives would take a 25% pay cut in 2027 with further cuts to be considered. However, he went further also suggesting that whilst the FairTax would remove income from the agenda when it comes to citizens, he said that politicians should do "that little bit more" by paying a flat income tax of 20% of what they earn.
When asked formally, Prosperitas confirmed this was an agreed government policy. However, it is unknown how the government is going to achieve this pay cut and tax. However we can assume that the government would use the amendment procedure on the Tax code to introduce their "elected representative tax". whilst pay of MP's and Senators is decided by Parliament the pay of Assembly Member's is decided by the Council of Ministers although with the Conservatives and Prosperitas holding 2/3 of the seats together they could easily outvote the Social Democrats.
Let's look at how this pay cut, if agreed, would affect the pay of our elected representatives:
Member of Parliament - $67,500 (Cut to $50,625) (Current Total Bill for MP Pay: $54,000,000) (New Total Bill for MP Pay: $40,500,000) (Total Savings: $13,500,000)
Senator - $60,000 (Cut to $45,000) (Current Total Bill for Senator Pay: $7,500,000) (New Total Bill for Senator Pay: $5,625,000) (Total Savings: $1,875,000)
Assembly Member - $30,000 (Cut to $22,500) (Current Total Bill for AM Pay: $21,600,000) (New Total Bill for AM Pay: $16,200,000) (Total Savings: $5,400,000)
If all of this were taken into account, under the 25% pay cut for 2027 there would be a total saving of $20,775,000 which could be used to pay down the debt if delivered.
However, on top of this there could be the possibility of an Elected Representative Tax of 20% of the total income which would see MP's contributing $12,656.25 out of their already cut income.
This could be described by some as turkeys voting for Christmas, however the Conservatives argue that the cuts are "fair to ask for" following the sacrifices being expected of the Aurentine voters. It can also be seen as a publicity stunt by the Conservatives, to try garner support for itself by showing that it can make hard decisions relating to it's own pay and not afraid to do so.
The Social Democrats have not explicitly said if they would back the Prime Minister over the pay cuts and tax, however they said they would look at the proposals in "excruciating detail" before deciding if they would support or not.

Government confirms Elected Representative Pay Cut plan
The Government announces plans to cut MP's pay by 25% for the year 2027.
16:36 - 23rd April 2027
ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES - A few days ago the Prime Minister announced his plans for cutting the pay of elected representatives and introducing a separate income tax for elected reps alone. Today, he announced that the People's Chamber and Senate would receive a government motion to propose a pay cut for elected representatives over a long term plan from 2027 to 2030.
Regional Assembly Members will hold their own separate votes, the Prime Minister said however he was re-assured that every First Minister had agreed to the plans. It is estimated that in 2027 alone there would be a possible saving of $20,775,000.
The Prime Minister set out his vision for pay cuts for the next couple of years as well, which you can see below:
- 2027 - 25% Cut (Savings of $20,775,000)
- 2028 - 15% Cut
- 2029 - 10% Cut
- 2030 - 5% Cut

Government rejects Nysan Economic Union Membership
The Prime Minister issued a statement regarding the formation of the NEU and Aurentina's stance.
17:52 - 15th Vernil 2027
NYSAN ECONOMIC UNION - The Prime Minister released a statement today revealing behind the scenes negotiations for the formation of an economic alliance, however explains his reasoning for rejecting Aurentine Membership despite initial enthusiasm for the project.
The statement revealed that Aurentina was to be a full member of the Nysan Economic Union alongside housing the bulk of the NEU infrastructure, however the Prime Minister rejected membership of the Union following "serious concerns" over the role of a Security Council and the "spiralling de-empowerment" of the democratic institutions of the NEU.
It appears that negotiations for the Union had been going on for a long time, however the Prime Minister said he was clear that "the interests of Aurentina" must come above "the will of others" in what seems to be his most critical swipe at foreign leaders. Whilst he said he was "dismayed" at the rejection of membership he believed that trade deals could be achieved with members of the NEU that Aurentina would be "willing to work" with.
The Social Democrats have welcomed the move, saying that the NEU had "lost it's way" and that staying out of the Nysan Economic Union was the best way forward for Aurentina.

Aurentina begins negotiations with Goldecia for Free-Trade Agreement
Aurentina has entered into negotiations with Goldecia over the establishment of a free-trade agreement between the two nations.
13:17 - 26th Vernil 2027
FREE TRADE AGREEMENTS - The Government today began negotiations for a significant trade deal with Goldecia today in it's attempt to show the public that Aurentina does not need to be a member of an international organisation to deliver agreements with other nations whilst also re-enforcing national sovereignty.
The first round of negotiations began in New Santos with a further three rounds already agreed to alternate between Aurentina and Goldecia, the Aurentine delegation was led by the Secretary of State for Business Laura Blackburn whilst the Godecian delegation was led by Lord Anthony Whittle.
The Prime Minister addressed the negotiations in an interview with Aurentina Today where he said that the relationship between Aurentina and Goldecia was "strong" and that they agreed in many areas of policy therefore it would only be appropriate that the government extends our hand to other nations. However he strongly enforced his belief that there should not be a "trade of sovereignty or backroom deals" when agreeing in new relationships with other nations which appears to be another direct swipe at the Nysan Economic Union proposal which Aurentina decided not to join earlier this month.
He further said that he expected the negotiations to be in good faith, fruitful and leading to a good deal for a strong Aurentina and an equally strong Goldecia. He also hinted that the government had been in private discussions with other countries to form further bi-lateral agreements, however he refused to say which these were.
It is unknown how the Social Democrats feel about the news, however they said that the deal would be "good for the economy" if it went forward, however did not commit to agreeing to support the deal if they were in government. However it is unlikely they would undo such an agreement.

Prosperitas calls for establishment of "beefed up" Supreme Court
Elizabeth Nixon, Leader of Prosperitas and Deputy-Prime Minister, said the next Prosperitas Manifesto would contain a commitment to establish a Supreme Court with new powers to strike down legislation that "damages the nation".
09:14 - 1st May 2027
POLITICAL REFORM - In a radical move by the Deputy-Prime Minister Elizabeth Nixon revealed the first definitive policy for the Prosperitas Manifesto in 2029, the establishment of a Supreme Court that is able to challenge the government and parliament and act as a "real check on the tyranny of majority government"
Whilst she did not give details on the policy, she said that the plans would ensure that the judges were not appointed by Parliament or the government but where chosen on merit by an Independent Commission.
The Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition have not commented on the proposals, however it is unlikely that either party would support the measure. However, if the next government was to be a Coalition then it could become a key demand by Prosperitas.
With no written constitution, it is likely that Parliament would need to author legislation to establish the court and it's powers thus eroding it's own power. Critics of the proposals have argued that the legislative route would be "complex" and present a "conflict of interest" for MP's and Senators.
Prosperitas has said that it would publish a draft proposal of how legislation could look before the next election.

ONS predicts Aurentine Economy to grow by 1.7% in 2027
The Office of National Statistics released a report today predicting that economic growth would reach 1.7% in 2027 citing "friendly business policies" and "stable global economic situation" however said that growth must be maintained through further investment.
19:29 - 2nd May 2027
ECONOMY - The ONS (Office of National Statistics) released it's predictions for economic growth today with positive news for Aurentina and more specifically the government. The Conservatives have argued that friendly business policies would see more investment to help the economy balance itself between consumer spending and investment, the ONS also released predictions for 2028, 2029 and 2030 if government policy was to remain "similar".
The ONS predicted growth of 1.7% for Aurentina in 2027, whilst we are officially waiting on the growth figures for the first quarter it is widely expected that growth for the first three and a half months of the year that the economy grew by 0.5% which would be up from the growth of 0.2% in the final quarter of 2026.
Further predictions for 2028 and 2029 said that economic growth could reach 2% per year, if current economic conditions do not drastically change or that if there is a "significant change" in government policy, however the ONS did not provide a clear cut figure prediction.
The Prime Minister welcomed the prediction saying that it was clear proof that on the economy "the government was on the right side", commentators note the use of "government" instead of promoting the Conservatives alone following leaks of discussions between the Prime Minister and Deputy-Prime Minister where the DPM accused the Prime Minister of "taking all the credit" and ignoring the fact it was in Coalition.
The Leader of the Opposition also welcomed the growth figures, however said that the biggest issue was not the economy instead saying that "fairness and equality" was a bigger concern for Aurentine voters which the Coalition Government has not delivered. Instead, she said that Social Democrats would look at all policies if in government but would "prioritise" policies that lead to economic fairness and boosted economic growth.
The Deputy-Prime Minister welcomed the figures and hailed the achievements of the government however warned that current government policy needed to consider more radical proposals to help people get on, pointing to the Basic Income Guarantee that is currently planned to be subject to a referendum with legislation currently in the third stage in the Senate after the People's Chamber agreed to amendments last month.

Hospital and GP Access Charge passes the Senate
The controversial Healthcare Access Charge Act became law today as it cleared it's final hurdle in the Senate, imposing a $10 charge on Non-Emergency and prescribed visits to Hospitals and a $5 charge for non-emergency and treatment appointments with GP's..
18:32 - 3rd May 2027
HEALTHCARE CHARGES - Despite outcry's of Opposition from the Social Democrats and foreign governments, the Government has held it's nerve on the Healthcare Access Charge Act albeit slightly amended to include further exemptions.
The new charges, which have been dubbed the Hospital Tax and GP Tax respectively by the Opposition, were agreed by the Coalition to help fund a new State Science Institute and not to increase government revenue. The Prime Minister also argued that the charges would also be used to be re-invested directly into the health service to help train new doctors and nurses to a high standard.
The new charges provide exemptions or discounted charges for students, children under the age of 15, the elderly and those who suffer from disabilities. Students shall face a $8.50 charge in access to Hospitals and a $3.50 charge for GP's, a cut of $1.50 in comparison to the standard charges.
Children under the age of 15, or their parents even, will be charged $5.00 for access to Hospitals and $1.50 for GP's a cut of $5 for the Hospital Charge and $3.50 in the GP Charge. The Elderly will be exempt from both charges, whilst those with disabilities will also receive full exemptions.
The Social Democrats said the plan was "disastrous for the healthcare system" and that they would repeal the charges on "Day One" of the next Social Democrat Government. Prosperitas has defended the policy saying that the government never intended for the charge to be permanent, however expected it to remain in force for the immediate future.
The Conservatives hailed the changes as a first step to "responsible healthcare spending" and not as a tax on the poor and ill who many critics have argued would be disproportionately hit by the charges.
The Charges are set to come into effect from the 1st December 2027, therefore there is plenty of time to make use of your free visits to Hospitals and GP's.

FairTax becomes Law: "Most Significant Tax Reform in Aurentine History" - Prime Minister
The FairTax has been passed by the Senate today, putting the FairTax into law to begin collection from 2028.
17:44 - 15th Autumber 2027
FAIRTAX - The FairTax was passed by the Senate this evening, the Tax Code of Aurentina (2027) Act was approved by Conservative, Prosperitas and Liberal Senators despite strong opposition from the Social Democrats and the Green Party of Aurrentina. The Council of Ministers is expected to meet in the coming week to discuss the implementation of the FairTax and the distribution of materials and resources to ensure a swift yet orderly transition.
The proposals, which have gone through the parliamentary process for months were the response of the Conservatives to the Institute of Tax Reform which called for the simplification of the tax regime in Aurentina. A radical proposal, which repealing all existing taxes on income, business and other areas has been replaced by a standard 30% tax on top of every product/service that isn't deemed essential.
The new legislation allows the government to review what is considered an essential product/service every year, with the government expected to introduce it's first list of tax free goods and services in the coming weeks. However, a key part of the proposals is the establishment of a prebate given to every household equally dependant on their size which would cover all the essential goods or services before paying tax.
With the new tax regime to begin on the 15th January, the government is to set information packs to every household in Aurentina to ensure swift registration for prebates. Whilst the prebate is by no means compulsory, it requires applications which shall need to be renewed every year. The size of household will be verified by the government, through the use of public records and prebates will be distributed in one single yearly payment on the 15th January each year. It will be possible for households to request monthly payments instead, however all cases will be considered by the Treasury.
The Prime Minister described the reforms as the "most significant tax reform in Aurentine history" whilst the Leader of the Opposition described legislation's passage through parliament as "disruptive, unnecessary and inherently Unfair".
There are calls from within the Social Democrats for the Leader of the Opposition Emily Marsden to commit to the abolition of the FairTax, dubbed the UnFairTax, if the Social Democrats were elected in 2029. However, she has not confirmed whether she would commit to such a promise.
Businesses are able to apply now for tax exemptions, these will be considered jointly by the Treasury and the Department of Business. The government urges all businesses who believe they provide essential goods or services to apply for exemptions, however maintains that each case shall be looked at individually.

Hawthorne announces "major cabinet reshuffle"
The Prime Minister announced that he would begin his first Cabinet reshuffle in the next day or two.
09:21 - 25th Autumber 2027
CABINET - "Expect a major cabinet reshuffle" said the Prime Minister today in an interview with Aurentina Today, we can exclusively reveal that the Prime Minister is to begin his first reshuffle in the coming days. Whilst he failed to give us any confirmed moves or sackings, he said that "no stone in the government will be ignored" that "all roles were up for re-consideration".
When asked further on this, he conceded that Prosperitas members of the cabinet would be decided by the Deputy-Prime Minister with consultation from himself. He further stated that Prosperitas members of the cabinet could move from their current roles if it was "best for Aurentina" leading to speculation that Prosperitas may secure a top job in the cabinet alongside Deputy-Prime Minister.
Below you can see the cabinet before the Reshuffle:
Prime Minister: Harold Hawthrone (C) Deputy-Prime Minister: Elizabeth Nixon (P) Chancellor of the Exchequer: James Reed (C) Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs: Joshua Brammer (C) Secretary of State: Aimee O'Neil (C) Secretary of State for Defence: David Campbell (C) Secretary of State for Education: Thomas Nugent (C) Secretary of State for Health: Samuel Bolton (C) Secretary of State for Energy: Thomas Goodfellow (P) Secretary of State for Work and Pensions: Matthew Baron (C) Secretary of State for Business: Laura Blackburn (C) Secretary of State for Justice: Leanne Mulley (C) Secretary of State for Environment: Andrew Bailey (C) Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sports: Katy Lenney (P) Secretary of State for Local Communities: Quentin Brown (C) Secretary of State for Transport: Andrew Mitchell (C) Leader of the People's Chamber: Geoffrey Landgraab (C) Leader of the Senate: Paul Gardiner (C)
Prosperitas currently holds Deputy Premiership, Energy and Culture, Media & Sports however some commentators suggest that the Prime Minister could be willing to replace either Energy or Culture with a higher ranking job in the cabinet such as Business, Foreign Affairs or even State however it would clearly be expected that Prosperitas concede or agree to a new raft of policies possibly including a Conservative backed proposal to firmly set tougher sentences for criminals convicted of three previous offences into law.
What is certain however is that the new cabinet could either simply be a moving job, or we could have new faces in the cabinet.

Cabinet Reshuffle: Majority of Departments receive new Secretaries
The Prime Minister finished his first reshuffle today, with the majority of Government departments receiving new secretaries including an influx of new faces.

CABINET - "Phase two" is how the Prime Minister described his new cabinet today to an audience of journalists earlier today, with his first reshuffle being bigger than anyone ever expected with Prosperitas gaining the Foreign Affairs brief in return for Energy and new Conservative faces taking over key government roles.
The Prime Minister hailed his new cabinet saying that he "looked forward" to continuing the hard work of this government, reducing the debt, healing the economy and making life fairer and work more rewarding for the people of Aurentina. He also announced that there will be a further announcement of a raft of new policies to continue the government's programme.

AURENTINA TODAY
Basic Income Guarantee Referendum Legislation passes - 9th February set for Referendum 2028
The Basic Income Guarantee (Referendum) Act passed the Senate today with the date set for the 5th February 2028, with a four week official campaigning period.
17:21 - 3rd November 2027
BASIC INCOME GUARANTEE - The cherished brainchild of Prosperitas took it's next step to becoming reality today as the Basic Income Guarantee (Referendum) Act was passed into law as the Senate voted in favour of the legislation for the final time.
The legislation set's out the role of the Electoral Commission, official campaigns and other interested parties in the referendum and sets a cap on $500,000 for individual donations and $1,000,000 from corporations. The legislation also set's out the question as "Do you believe that there should be a Basic Income Guarantee in Aurentina?" with the two responses being either Yes or No.
Government amendments to the Referendum Act have raised the bar on ensuring only referendums that have a turnout of above 60% are binding on the government in the event of a vote that would change the status quo. The Coalition is reportedly divided on the proposals, however Conservatives are reportedly to point to the Prebate of the FairTax as sufficient now that there are no Income taxes from 2028.
Prosperitas and the Social Democrats, alongside the greens, have publicly backed the proposals in parliament despite reluctant Conservative votes in favour of the referendum legislation. The date of the referendum has been set as the 9th February 2028 where the entire country shall vote on the proposals, the Social Democrats have stated that they would bring forward a Basic Income Guarantee if elected in 2029 if the referendum voted in favour yet did not meet the referendum turnout whilst Prosperitas said it would "respect the referendum vote" whatever the outcome.
In response to the legislation, two main campaign groups are to be formed with each party explicitly stating their position on the Basic Income Guarantee. It is expected that the Conservatives could be alone in their opposition to the Basic Income Guarantee.
