Joint Session sees Maglev Proposal approved by Parliament
Conservatives, Prosperitas, Social Democrats and Liberals combined to approve Maglev Project
23:59 - 8th February 2027
MAGLEV - History was made today as the first Joint Session of Parliament since the 1930's was convened today, further history was made when the legislation being debated and voted upon for the whole day was a radical new transport proposal that requires $120 billion of investment to construct.
The Joint Session begun at 9am, as MP's and Senators entered the Hall of Decisions before it was locked (as per tradition) until the legislation had been fully approved. The door's re-opened at 10:07pm where it was announced that the Maglev Transportation Act had been approved un-amended by the Joint Session, whilst we cannot bring you full details of the voting stages it is known that the Conservatives, Prosperitas, Social Democrats and Liberals voted in favour at mixed stages of the process.
It is unknown when work on the Maglev line would now begin, however the Prime Minister has said work would begin as soon as realistically properly.

Same-Sex Marriage Legislation finally passed
First Marriages to begin on the 29th April 2027
12:39 - 15th February 2027
SAME-SEX MARRIAGE - A bill which allows same-sex weddings to take place in Aurentina has been passed by Senators today, thus becoming law.
Senators voted 92-33 in favour of the Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Act.
The Prime Minister said the passing of the bill was a "major achievement" for the Coalition, despite internal Conservative opposition to the legislation whilst the Leader of the Opposition Emily Marsden hailed the passing of the legislation describing it as a "truly remarkable" day for equality in Aurentina.
The first Same-Sex Marriages are expected to take place on the 20th April, following an extensive review by the government on the earliest possible date for marriages to begin.
Religious Organisations are bound by law, not to perform Same-Sex Marriages if they don't wish to however are obligated to bless a Same-Sex Marriage if asked to do so. Failure to do so will see the possibility of legal action and compensation claims for denied couples, Prosperitas Leader Elizabeth Nixon said this approach was the "correct way" and that she hoped that the legislation would be applied "fully" by "all religious institutions in respect of the law".
During a debate during the Committee of Amendment, MPs and Senators rejected amendments which were said to provide "protection" for groups and individuals opposed to same-sex marriage.
The Conservative's John Smith tabled an amendment stating that no-one could be "compelled by any means" to solemnise gay marriage, including by a contract or a legal requirement.
Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Katy Lenney insisted there were "significant protections for religious bodies and celebrants" in the bill and the amendment was unnecessary.
Mr Smith tabled further amendments, including one calling for recognition that "a belief in marriage as a voluntary union between one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others for life is a belief worthy of respect in a democratic society".
He said: "This has been the prevailing view in Scotland for centuries, and may now be considered a minority view or even old fashioned, but it is an integral tenet of faith for many Christians, Muslims and others as well as the belief of many of no faith position at all."
Key Measures of the new legislation include:
- Religious and belief bodies opt in to perform same-sex marriage, but shall be required to bless a Same-Sex Marriage if approached.
- Civil marriage ceremonies can take place anywhere agreed by the registrar and the couple, other than religious premises.
- Celebrants who are part of an organisation which has not opted in would not be allowed to conduct same-sex marriages.
- Individual celebrants who felt it would go against their faith to carry out same-sex weddings would be required to conduct a Civil Same-Sex Marriage.
- Provision making it clear that the introduction of same-sex marriage has no impact on existing rights to freedom of speech and that it is possible to oppose same-sex marriage "without being homophobic" however ensuring that this is not abused to protect Same-Sex Couples.
- Amended guidance on the teaching of the issue in schools.
- Recognition of Same-Sex Marriages conducted in other parts of the world if they can be proven
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has opened registrations to convert existing Same-Sex Civil Partnerships into Marriages alongside registration to hold a Same-Sex Marriage.
With Same-Sex Marriage due to be legalised at 00:00 on the 20th April 2027, many are suggesting there may be a rush to marry amongst those who wish to do so.

Social Democrats reveal "radical yet sensible" alternative to government policies
Many measures included in the alternative can be seen as attempts by Emily Marsden to appease her party including a Cap on CEO Pay, a Basic Income Guarantee without a referendum, introducing a national day for Nurses, Full Pupil Premium, Re-introduction of the Responsible Electricity Usage Charge, Simplified Tourist Visa's, Military Pensions, Toll Road price increases, Prisoner Votes and further Parliamentary Reform.
18:56 - 17th February 2027
SOCIAL DEMOCRATS - The Leader of the Opposition looked anxious this morning, after the Social Democrats had called a press conference on the "direction of Social Democrat policies" the media hype that it would be the Alternative Policy statement that the Social Democrats have been promising since the start of the year.
If Emily Marsden was nervous, she had every reason to be. The future of the Social Democrats was on the line, if she had any hope of trying to reboot the boost the Social Democrats received in the polls then the alternative proposal needed to deliver.
Expectations were high, however merely ten minutes before the Leader of the Opposition was due to speak all members of the media present were given a copy of the alternative which has been titled "Social Democrats: The Alternative" with a sub-title of "Introducing Politics of Fairness". After a brief glance, I could see areas that would be popular but also some that would be controversial however in the wishes of the organisers I did not forward details on till the speech begun.
When the Leader of the Opposition finally got up to speak, she looked strong and calm although you could see the slight fear behind her eyes of what would happen if this announcement was to backfire.
You can find an extract of her statement below:
"Ladies and Gentlemen, members of the Press, Citizens of Aurentina. We got it wrong, the Social Democrats lost it's way and failed to deliver the expectations of the people. As a result, the Conservatives have been put into high office on a manifesto of inequality, spending cuts and the unwillingness to change the constitutional and social order.
The Social Democrats however must respond to the new government's agenda, we must be able to go out on the doorstep and say to the ordinary voter "this is what we believe, this is what the Social Democrats will do for you and this is how we will do it".
Like the Coalition Agreement, we have pooled policies into twelve areas. What is important about our policies, are that they are a "radical yet sensible" alternative to the Coalition government, our policies are based on fairness, responsibility and equality and therefore we will shape the nation around these goals.
The Social Democrats understand, we know what you want and we know how to deliver it."
The speech had only been publicly available for minutes before Conservative Party officials were commenting, saying the plans were "damaging for our economy", "undermining the strength of the economy with leftist policies", "more of the same".
The Prime Minister, who was asked about the alternative document whilst he was out visiting a Primary School in New Santos, said the alternative was the same old Social Democrat attitude of "tax more, spend more, duck responsibility".
You can find the full Alternative Document here.
With Regional Elections close, the campaign about to begin. It was important that the Social Democrats had a tune to rally around, whilst the alternative may not have been so popular with the Conservatives it has resonated across the party that has a new found optimism.

Campaign for 2027 Aurentine Regional Assembly Elections Officially Begin
The Official campaign begun today at midday, all eyes are on the Conservatives and Social Democrats as we hope to find who will win the county elections.
14:03 - 19th February 2027
ELECTIONS 2027 - It's Official! We're back in campaign season, this time however for the Regional Assembly elections held every four years across Aurentina in each of the counties of the nation.
In 2023, in the months ahead of the Parliamentary election we saw Social Democrats claim victory with winning control of five of the twelve assemblies. Four years on and we're unsure who could win these Regional elections, momentum has been building for the Social Democrats after their crushing defeat in the 2026 Parliamentary elections however the Conservatives have presided over what so far has been a successful and efficient government and there is little reason that any voter could feel they need a radical change.
Each Party has adopted a slogan for the official campaign, which will be included in their ballot underneath the name of the candidates alongside the party logo to identify candidates easily.
Below is a list of all the approved slogans of parties that hold seats in Parliament courtesy of the Electoral Commission:
- Conservative Party: "Cut Tax, Reduce the Debt, Grow the Economy - Vote Conservative"
- Social Democrats: "Fair Society, Equal for all, Responsible Government - Vote Social Democrat"
- Prosperitas: "Delivering Prosperity in Government - Prosperitas 2027"
- Liberal Party: "Liberal beliefs for a Liberal Government"
- Green Party of Aurentina: "Oppose reckless government - Vote Green today!"
- No2TheState: "Vote against the same old faces - Vote for a free Aurentina"
Commentators are predicting a Conservative Victory, however some are in doubt that the Conservatives could win if the Social Democrats remain momentum following the election of the new leader where for the first time since 2024 the Social Democrats topped an official YouSay Opinion poll.
Join back with us on the 26th March 2027 for full election coverage

Prime Minister calls for Joint Session of Parliament on the Budget
In an unprecedented move, the Prime Minister called for the budget to be debated and voted upon in a Joint Session of Parliament
15:58 - 20th February 2027
BUDGET 2027 - It was unexpected, it's unprecedented yet the Prime Minister could become a trendsetter. In calling for a Joint Session of Parliament for the Budget he has asked for Parliament's approval over what he calls the "crucial" budget that will cut spending and return our budget balance to surplus thus reducing the debt.
Social Democrats have criticised the government over the deficit, saying that the tax cuts implemented by the Coalition have required the spending plan of the government to require deeper cuts to return the budget to surplus.
The budget will also be used to announce the Office of National Statistics predictions for economic growth in Aurentina, which the Coalition is likely to brood over if smaller than they'd like.
Chancellor James Reed has said his first budget will be a "business budget" that "makes savings where necessary" but will also "deliver further tax cuts to stimulate the economy". However, also expected to be included is the barrage of new taxes demanded by Prosperitas in the Coalition government although the Conservatives will not want to promote this loudly.
If a Joint Session was called, then it would be the first time ever that a budget has been presented via a Joint Session. However, you can see the appeal in doing so. A government spending plan, a procedure which can usually take weeks on end to approve could all be done in one day. Electorally, it could also benefit the government to have it's budget approved so it can give messages to County Council Candidates on what the government is doing and what county councils will be expected to deal with in the coming year.
Social Democrat Leader Emily Marsden will be striving to ensure she has an impact on the proceedings, or backs the Prime Minister into a corner to change parts of his budget to show her abilities as a "leader" however the Conservatives and Prosperitas have a sufficient majority in any Joint Session to block such changes.
As a Joint Session has never been called for a budget before, it does mean that there are conflicts between procedures. Budget debates are required by law to be available to the public at the time of debate, whilst old rules regarding the Hall of Decision states that no recording equipment or access to the outside world is allowed inside.
The Prime Minister has said that the budget process will be an "exception" to the old rule, however to suspend the rule requires an additional motion on top of the Joint Session motions that will be required.
We'll update the article as we know more!
Update @ 16:49 - People's Chamber backs both a motion for a Joint Session and the motion to allow recording equipment into the Hall of Decision.
Update @ 19:23 - Senate backs both motions for a Joint Session and to suspend Hall Rule #98a allowing recording equipment entry
Update @ 19:25 - We can confirm that the Joint Session has been scheduled for the 25th February 2027

Basic Income Guarantee Legislation introduced as Responsible Electricity Usage Charge is Abolished and Referendum Act amended.
Now that the First Amendment to the Referendum Act has been passed, the Basic Income Guarantee referendum legislation has now been put forward.
12:13 - 22nd February 2027
PARLIAMENT - Today, the Senate finalised and approved the First Amendment to the Referendum Act ensuring that any referendum that has a turnout of 60% and above shall be deemed binding. Additionally, they also approved the repeal legislation for the Responsible Electricity Usage Charge which has long been an aim of the Conservatives.
This, allowed the Prime Minister to give the Leader of the House a nod. This nod was to introduce the government proposal/Highly Modified Proposal for a Basic Income Guarantee funded from increases in general taxation.
At the preliminary vote today, the Prime Minister was not present instead he was out on a visit to discuss the Maglev project with concerned families near to the projected route. Therefore, he has been saved of being the Prime Minister who "broke" the convention however he will be unable to not be in parliament at all.
Prosperitas, Social Democrats, Green and mostly disgruntled Conservatives (note, they're bound by the Coalition Agreement) supported the legislation at preliminary reading.
No date is put on the legislation for a referendum, the Deputy-Prime Minister has put forward an amendment in her name setting a date of 14th January 2028 for the referendum. It is unknown how many MP's or Senators would back such an amendment, the Social Democrats are pushing for the earliest possible vote.

BUDGET 2027: "We will cut taxes, we will reduce the deficit and expand our economy"
Joint Session of Parliament approves Government Budget
23:45 - 25th February 2027
BUDGET 2027 - A Joint Session of Parliament today approved the Government's budget, delivering a strong endorsement of the Coalition's campaign to lead the country to growth. Conservatives and Prosperitas united to push the legislation through, despite Social Democrats insisting it agreed that the debt needed to be paid down.
The Chancellor spoke for forty minutes announcing the statistics from the Office of National Statistics giving a ringing endorsement of it's economic plan that predicted growth for Aurentina between now and the next election was roughly 5-6% a major upgrade from 3 years ago where it predicted growth of 1-3%.
A range of already known measures were announced in the budget, however the Chancellor did surprise some by committing to reducing Sales Tax. However, there was one key message pushed by the Chancellor during his budget speech.
Whilst his spending cuts in the long term may be unpopular, they aren't what he wants to do but are what he has to do to return Aurentina to the days of prosperity and growth. Social Democrats argued that cuts at this speed without tax rises would see the debt be paid off in another 26 years, therefore called for the government to either increase taxes to help boost the surplus or demand they admit they will cut the budget to the bone if given long enough.
You can find the major speeches in the Joint Session here
One thing is clear however, all eyes are on the Conservatives in March for the regional assembly elections.

Railways & Franchising Act Passed - Bids to formally begin in May
Trains no longer ran by the State or Regional Assemblies - Aurentine Rail Established
15:42 - 28th February 2027
PUBLIC TRANSPORT - A major step in the road away from state-supported industry has appeared today in Aurentina, with the passing of the Railways & Franchising Act which will see all rail lines being formally bid on by private companies to an Independent Commission to decide who runs the line.
However, in a concession to Prosperitas the Conservatives included the creation of an "arms-length company" funded out of the Department of Transport that could also bid on lines if it so desired. The new company has been named Aurentine Rail, however there is one major line it has been guaranteed and that is the Maglev line due to formally start construction in the coming days.
The Maglev Line was protected by law to be ran by Aurentine Rail until it was deemed appropriate by the "Government of the day" and Aurentine Rail for it to otherwise be done so.
Social Democrats expressed scepticism towards the bill throughout it's passage through parliament, a mixture of votes in favour and against have made the Social Democrat position towards this new future for public transport very unclear.
The Independent Commission for Rail Networking is expected to formally open bids for the 1st May 2027, with the twelve regional lines being up for grabs. The Commission has already indicated that the best bid may not be the one willing to pay the most, but the bid that delivers "value for money", "high-performance arrival and departure times" and "investment in Aurentine jobs and the economy" will also be highly considered.
With twelve regional lines available, alongside 3 national lines going through the existing regions will be approving ten year contracts to run the lines. Failure to meet the full terms of the agreement by any company, will see their line removed from them and their bid lost without any return of money.
People will be watching the train times from now on.

Hawthorne calls for an "open and inclusive" inquiry over Human Rights Abuses from Falsea and Kingborough
Hawthorne has taken aim, the results of an inquiry could decide if Aurentina fires
11:12 - 3rd March 2027
ISONIA INQUIRY - The Prime Minister has called on the Arresse Imperium to hold an "open and inclusive" inquiry over the alleged Human Rights abuses claimed by The Isonia Inquiry describing the abuses if true as a "serious matter for International co-operation".
In a speech outside his official residence, the Prime Minister said that all policy options would be open to Aurentina in the event that an inquiry resulted in human rights abuses including embargos and other economic sanctions. However, he warned that the consequences would be even greater for the Arresse Imperium if they "failed to set up a suitable inquiry" including diplomatic sanctions and even the dismissal of the ambassador to Aurentina.
The Department of Foreign Affairs still issued travel guidance to the citizens of Aurentina that it was "safe to travel" however added a new warning that the "current national situation could change quickly" and that citizens should "seriously re-consider their visits".
The Secretary for Foreign Affairs Joshua Brammer said that Aurentina would "not tolerate" any evidence of Human Rights abuses and would act "swiftly" if the situation needed to be responded to.

Maglev Construction begins - Images of Regional Hub in New Santos unveiled
Hawthorne has taken aim, the results of an inquiry could decide if Aurentina fires
15:34 - 3rd March 2027
MAGLEV - Construction today begun on the Maglev Train Line starting in Evanshire, Blackford and Estershade. With the first phase of the project having end points at all these areas it was suggested to be logical for the construction to begin there.
In New Santos today, prospective images of the Maglev regional hub for Evanshire was released which you can see above. The Secretary of State for Transport Andrew Mitchell hailed the start of the construction for the Maglev Line which has been called Project Slipstream.
The Secretary of State for Transport hailed the new jobs that the line would bring alongside the boost in national infrastructure which would help grow the economy in a way that isn't artificial.
Estimates put the total cost of the project to be $120 billion and could take around eight years to complete phase 1 and phase 2.
However, politicians around the nation remain committed to the project and it has been given a pardon from the franchising legislation passed by Parliament a few days ago to allow Aurentine Rail the opportunity to expand and grow in the market by granting them the pride and joy of Aurentina.

Conservatives top polls again - Social Democrats also gaining
Conservatives top Opinion Polls again, however with the decline of Prosperitas see's the rise of the Social Democrats and Green Party
15:34 - 5th March 2027
OPINION POLLS - The Conservatives once again topped the monthly YouSay poll, however the more interesting development surrounds Prosperitas and the success of the Social Democrats and the Green Party of Aurentina.
Prosperitas has fallen from 18% in February to 14% in March, however the government has had a good time so far. Prosperitas is a member of the government, so why are the Conservatives soaking up all the boosts in the polls? The answer is simple, according to Professor Leech who says that it is simply that Prosperitas is such a small part of government that it isn't being noticed and as such the support goes to the Conservatives.
Prosperitas will be looking to boost it's poll rating next month as crucial Basic Income Guarantee Legislation has finally been put in Parliament, with many Conservatives seeking to sabotage it many disgruntled Prosperitas supporters who have defected could return back to Prosperitas if it delivers the Basic Income Guarantee referendum.
The YouSay March 2027 Opinion Poll puts the Conservatives on top with 39%, the Social Democrats with 33%, Prosperitas with 14%, Green Party of Aurentina with 12%, Liberal Party with 2% and both No2TheState and Others coming with around 0%.

Hawthorne: "Conservatives should vote for or abstain on the Basic Income Referendum Legislation"
The Prime Minister today has asked "disgruntled Conservatives" not to vote against the government legislation, instead calling for a Yes Vote or abstention before campaigning against the Basic Income Guarantee.
15:34 - 6th March 2027
BASIC INCOME GUARANTEE - Prosperitas loves it, the Conservatives hate it. Yet it somehow made it into the Coalition, near enough anyway. The Conservatives demanding a referendum to be held on the proposal, however insisted that the question should state that the funding should come from increased taxation.
The Electoral Commission however has since said that the taxation remark should be removed from the legislation to prevent bias, the Prime Minister has said that the Conservatives would not support any change to the question and that if the question was changed via legislation the Conservatives would "block" the legislation.
However, by the time the legislation reaches the Committee of Amendment it would be much harder to block in the Senate where the Conservatives don't hold a majority. Thus to do so, they would require the backing of either Social Democrats or Liberals and neither have expressed any desire to do so.
The Prime Minister issued advice to Conservative MP's and Senators today saying that they should "vote for or abstain on the Basic Income Referendum Legislation, then campaign against it in the referendum campaign" however he additionally stated that "the legislation proposed is what the Conservatives support, if amended in any form will result in a loss of Conservative support".
The Leader of the Opposition and Social Democrats, who vetoed the idea of a Basic Income in 2023 have said they will back the legislation and is currently leaning towards recommending a Yes Vote in the referendum.
Commentators say the passage of this bill is not down to the Conservatives, but mostly Prosperitas and the Social Democrats. If either, push the Conservatives too far it could result in a removal of the Prime Minister's support. With Prosperitas needing something to give them a boost in the polls, the delivery of a non-Conservative policy could be Elizabeth Nixon's ticket to reinvigorating Prosperitas.

Institute of Tax Reform proposes a FairTax in Aurentina
A FairTax would repeal all current taxes to introduce a standard tax on purchases bar essential goods and services.
19:39 - 10th March 2027
TAX REFORM - The Institute of Tax Reform proposed a radical overhaul of Taxation today, the implementation of a FairTax across Aurentina. Their proposal contained many reports and documents, used to argue that the new tax would be revenue-neutral, would be progressive and would attract investment and boost the Aurentine economy.
The Institute of Tax Reform argued the FairTax was "ultimately fair" and "good for the economy" by abolishing taxes on income, ensuring that every individual takes home their wages in full whilst also driving down interest rates, making saving easier and ensuring that low-income families pay little or no tax on essential goods and services.
The FairTax would in effect pay a rebate in advance of you paying the tax to each household each month, this rebate would be enough to cover all essential goods and services based on your household size thus a bigger household will equal a bigger rebate.
The level deemed correct for "all essential goods and services" would be calculated from identifying the poverty line in Aurentina, and identifying the cost of these goods and services for each member of the household.
The Institute of Tax Reform also proposed that Business should be exempt from the tax, to ensure that people do not play the system and say they are a business they will be required to register and provide evidence to the Department of Business which would grant them a Tax Exemption Certificate which shall allow them to claim any tax back after purchase via a simple online or paper form.
It further suggests that as a result tax avoidance and evasion would reduce, it would be harder to do either.
The Institute for Tax Reform has said it is willing to engage with the government if it wishes to move towards this style of revenue. The Conservatives, including the Prime Minister said that "the case for this FairTax is alluring, however we must look at it in great detail and consult on whether we would be willing to pursue this method of tax simplification"

Hawthorne: "Conservatives will drop opposition to Basic Income Guarantee amendments IF Prosperitas backs the FairTax"
Hawhtorne made the announcement at cabinet earlier today
15:09 - 15th March 2027
TAX REFORM & BASIC INCOME GUARANTEE - The Prime Minister made a game changing move today in a new form of Coalition diplomacy, he offered Prosperitas members of the cabinet a withdrawal of opposition to amendments to the Basic Income Guarantee Referendum legislation on the condition that Prosperitas backed proposals put forward by the Institute of Tax Reform on the introduction of a FairTax and the repeal of other taxes.
It is certainly a gamble, both on the Conservative side and Prosperitas, they could both face a backlash from their supporters if their ideas fail to gain traction. However, Prosperitas could lose further down the line if a referendum does happen and the voters reject the proposal.
Whilst the Conservatives have not released full details of their FairTax proposal based on the Institute of Tax Reform proposal, they said it would be "fairer" and "help the hard workers of Aurentina spend more of their money, cutting tax yet retaining revenue".
The Social Democrats have not yet commented on the offer reportedly made by the Prime Minister, however could attempt to derail the Referendum legislation if Prosperitas backed the tax reform.

Nixon: "Prosperitas seriously considering Tax Reform Offer"
Elizabeth Nixon (Deputy Prime Minister) said that Prosperitas was considering the offer from the Conservatives and was weighing up the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed FairTax
11:38 - 16th March 2027
TAX REFORM & BASIC INCOME GUARANTEE - Prosperitas has been divided on the FairTax proposal, in some minds it would be radical tax reform that this country needs and it would be a negotiating chip for Prosperitas to ensure the Conservatives do not derail their Basic Income Guarantee.
She said that she would support the FairTax proposal if the Conservatives could sufficiently argue that it met the following criterion:
- Lower Taxes for Lower Income Families
- Revenue Neutrality
- No Huge Decrease in the size of government
- Sufficient checks and balances on Business, ensuring exemptions are carefully monitored.
- Rebates be withheld from those earning over $1 Million individually or collectively
- A Proper Auditing System for random checks on Business and families to ensure tax is not avoided
- Legal Protections and rewards for whistleblowers within a business alerting the government of tax exemptions being misused
- Legal Obligations for Retailers to transfer all Tax revenue to the Treasury with a fee paid to them for this service
She also said that Prosperitas was "seriously considering" the proposal and that if it meant that the Basic Income Guarantee was closer to becoming a reality on top of the tax reform, she would be more warm to the idea.
There have been no comments from the Leader of the Opposition on the tax reforms, however it is speculated that the Social Democrats are not in favour of the reforms and will fight tooth and nail to prevent it becoming law if a deal is agreed either through the courts or through new legislation.
