Johannes Christiaan Keiser Appearance/picture Age: Mid sixties Current occupation: President of the Batavian Commonwealth Personality: Natural charmer, intelligent, friendly, womanizer, vain, arrogant, rational, stubborn Beliefs: Technocrat, utilitarianist, classical liberal, libertarian, libertine Family: Married, no children Confidentials: Freemason, suffers from male infertility Bio/history: Johannes Keiser was born in an upper middle class family of lawyers. He graduated in economics and proceeded to become a professor in economics at the Essenbosch University. Through his publications Keiser quickly become widely known throughout the country. He joined the IDU, a conservative-liberal political party and frequently appeared on national television as political commentator. Keiser was eventually presented as the IDU presidential candidate for the elections of 320 AR, which he won by surprise. When he was elected he was in his late fifties. Despite that, he is often known for his youthful appearance and energetic character. Keiser attempted to secularize Batavia's education system during his first term in office, and he introduced economic reforms that included heavy cuts on welfare spending, the reduction of taxes for the middle classes, companies and multionationals and economic de-regulation. Keiser did this to modernize Batavia's social market economy so that it can grow - which it is doing at a rapid rate. Keiser appointed a former banker to the position of Chancellor, but you may know him probably for his foreign policy. Keiser adopted a moderate foreign policy of economic diplomacy and detente towards Batavia's international opponents. This strategy failed after which Keiser pursued a punitive policy in Iryiiad, bringing the tensions in the region to the highest levels since many years. During this first term, Keiser survived an assassination attempt. Keiser was re-elected in 324 AR after which he launched an international diplomatic tour. He formed a centrist government and appointed a new Chancellor, Hendrick Schimmelpenninck, who is also a non-political technocrat. Edde Hartman ![]() Appearance/picture Age: Mid sixties Current occupation: Vice-president of the Batavian Commonwealth Personality: Loyal, conscientious, stiff, punctiliuos, cooperative, polite Beliefs: Technocrat, utilitarian, positivist Family: Married; three children Confidentials: Was treated for alcoholism Bio/history: Edde Hartman went to Essenbosch University where he graduated in economics. After that he worked for the Bank of Batavia. He eventually quit that job because he was offered a job at the Vorster Bank - Batavia's largest investment bank. He worked several decades for this bank and eventually became the CEO. Under his leadership the Vorster Bank greatly expanded. His success at the Vorster Bank abruptly ended when the bank lost hundreds of millions on wrong investments. After several months of internal struggles, the shareholders eventually forced Hartman to resign as CEO. Hartman retreated himself to his mansion and became addicted to alcohol. He was treated for his addiction for several years. After that Hartman started working again, this time as an international development association based in the Arkausan Confederation. It was Johannes Keiser who eventually brought Hartman back to Batavia. Hartman was appointed as an un-elected head of government under president Keiser in 320 AR. He was responsible for the management of the government administration, dealing with the Batavian legislature and for executing the policies of Johannes Keiser. Hartman's addiction led to a national affair, but was soon forgotten as he proved to be a very hard-working and skilled executive. In 324 AR, Hartman was appointed as Vice-president. Hendrick Schimmelpenninck Appearance/picture Age: Mid sixties Current occupation: Chancellor of the Batavian Commonwealth Personality: Arrogant, upbeat, intelligent, decisive, self-assured, domineering, charismatic, snobbish, vainglorious Beliefs: Patriot, elitist, Batavian-Reformed, classical liberal, rationalist Family: Married, 3 children Confidentials: Freemason Bio/history: Hendrick Schimmelpenninck was born in a family of lawyers and diplomats. He graduated in Law at the Essenbosch University and proceeded to become a lawyer. He also became a professor in International Law and later became a chief advisor to the Batavian foreign affairs ministry. He was eventually appointed as minister of foreign affairs. After that, Schimmelpenninck was appointed as Chancellor under President Oudkerk. After that Schimmelpenninck returned to the Essenbosch University as professor in International Law. In 324 AR, Schimmelpenninck returned to the political arena on the request of President Keiser. He was appointed as an unelected professional to lead the government for the second time in his career, this time by president Keiser. It is rumored that Schimmelpenninck might run for the presidency in 328 AR when Johannes Keiser's final term ends. Rudolf Meinke Appearance/picture Age: Mid fifties Current occupation: Director of Policy Affairs of the Ministry of Defence Personality: Impulsive, overwhelming, hot-tempered, belligerent, disciplined, antagonistic Beliefs: Patriot, Batavian Reformed, conservative, Realist Family: Married, 2 children Confidentials: Bio/history: Colonel Rudolf Meinke grew up in a working class family. His father worked in the mines, his mother was a nurse. Meinke joined the Batavian army after completing school. His physical strength allowed him to become a paratrooper and join an elite airborne regiment of the Batavian army. Meinke spent most of his military career with the Batavian airborne commandos. After that he began to pursue a career at the ministry of Defence where he started working for the Department of the Army. Not much later, Meinke was offered an executive job at the AMID, the foreign and military intelligence service of Batavia. He worked there for ten years and was eventually appointed as chief of the AMID by the Defence minister. This earned Meinke a seat in the National Security Council, of which he became the highest advisor because of his extensive experience in the field. Meinke was directly involved in the 322 AR Irenical Crisis which he provoked by developing a military-diplomatic strategy of confrontation with the colonial powers in Irenical. When Meinke's strategies eventually almost led to war, he was removed from his position by president Keiser. His aggressive character and bellicose foreign policies have earned him the nicknames ''Iron Meinke'' and ''Bloody Rudy'' among government circles. Gustaaf Cornelis-Fransse Appearance/picture Age: Early sixties Current occupation: Batavian minister of Foreign Affairs Personality: Modest, charming, eloquent, rational, patient, insensitive, spiritless Beliefs: Mercantilist, realist, technocrat Family: Married, 5 children Confidentials: Freemason Bio/history: Gustaaf Cornelis-Fransse grew up in a wealthy family that is considered a political dynasty in Batavia. The Cornelis-Fransse family has delivered chancellors, foreign affairs ministers, ambassadors, judges and many lawyers over the past two centuries. Gustaaf went to private school and later graduated in Law and International Economics at the Essenbosch University. During his time at Essenbosch he also served as the president of the Essenbosch Stdent Corps, an elite student fraternity that mainly occupied itself with hunting and academic activities. Cornelis-Fransse decided to travel after his college years, and eventually ended up in Falsea where he began to work for the Batavian consulate. After some years he returned to Batavia and started working for an international NGO where he would work for 20 years. During these years Cornelis-Fransse greatly expanded his international network. He eventually returned to the Batavian foreign affairs ministry when he was offered a job as ambassador to Falsea. After that he returned to Batavia to serve as Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, serving as the highest diplomat and he frequently visited other countries for top-level negotiations. In 320 AR Gustaaf Cornelis-Fransse was appointed by the Keiser-Hartman administration as minister of foreign affairs. He seemed the perfect candidate to execute Keiser's policy of detente towards Lanlania. The policy failed and resulted in the Irenical Crisis of 322 AR, during which Cornelis-Fransse negotiated a settlement in Denil in the Arkausan Confederation. Cornelis-Fransse helped to preserve the peace in Iryiiad during these negotiations that almost failed. In 324 AR president Keiser was re-elected. The new chancellor, Hendrick Schimmelpenninck, re-appointed Cornelis-Fransse as foreign minister for a second term. Cornelis-Fransse's role in the Irenical Crisis has earned him international respect, but in his own country he has been criticized as being 'weak' and 'soft on imperialism'. Hendrik Herz van Swarthout Appearance/picture Age: Late seventies Current occupation: Senator of the Estates General, chairman of the NCVP Personality: Bitter, wrathful, pious, righteous, persuasive, austere Beliefs: Batavian Reformed, misanthropist, paternalist, conservative Family: Married, 6 children Confidentials: Has bribed people in the past Bio/history: Hendrik Herz van Swarthout is the current head of the Herz van Swarthout family, possibly the most influential family in the Batavian Commonwealth. The family can trace its roots back to the first settlers who founded Batavia and posesses vast amounts of land which contained enormous reserves of gold. The Herz van Swarthout family also owned several railway companies. Besides their fortunes, they have also delivered presidents, foreign ministers, chancellors and diplomats in history. Hendrik went to private school and to a private university and graduated in theology. After that he pursued a degree in psychology, followed by a degree in Almanianian literature. During his college years he was an active participant in the church and he helped with the creation of the NCVP, a Christian-democratic party that unified all the Batavian Reformed and conservative political parties in a single movement. Hendrik eventually started working for an Almanianian bank where he would remain for twenty years. When he inherited the majority shares in the companies of his father he dedicated his life to expanding the business empire of his family, but after only a few years the NCVP asked him to be their presidential candidate. From 288 AR until 296 AR, Hendrik Herz van Swarthout served two terms as president of Batavia. His presidency was marked by his enforcement of a strict moral order, isolationist policies, social conservatism and extended welfare policies. After his presidency he remained politically active as a senator, while also managing his business empire from the background. In the decades that followed, Herz van Swarthout and his circles have opposed and blocked many reforms and liberalizations in Batavia as they saw 'progress' as a great menace. This circle, nicknamed as ''The Elders'' and ''the Gerontocrats'', consists of influential church elders, politicians, NCVP members, business men and other public figures. Hendrik Herz van Swarthout could not prevent however, with his media connections, that in 320 AR the reformist Johannes Keiser was elected as president. Since then, and also because of the rise of new generations, the political influence of Hendrik Herz van Swarthout has been waning. Jacob Barentsz Appearance/picture Age: Late fifties Current occupation: President of the Batavian National Bank Personality: Epicurean, bon vivant, audacious, ambitious, bombastic, flamboyant, antagonistic Beliefs: Batavian Reformed, pragmatic, conservative Family: Married, 1 child Confidentials: Corrupt Bio/history: Jacob Barentsz was born to a family of lawyers and bankers and is considered one of the most influential families in Batavia. Jacob Barentsz went to private school after which he served the military for a brief period. He then went to the most prestigious private university where he graduated in administration, and later also in political sciences. Barentsz pursued a career as a top civil servant. During this period Barentsz also became active for the NCVP where he met Hendrik Herz van Swarthout for the first time. Barentsz then began to work for the Ministry of Finance. Thanks to his connections, and those of his parents, Jacob Barentsz soon became one of the highest ranking civil servants from the ministry. Hendrik Herz van Swarthout gave him a prominent position within the NCVP, despite his young age. Barentsz rose to the highest position under the minister of finance and remained there for a few years. In 312 AR he was appointed as Finance Minister and would remain so for one term. In 316 AR he was appointed by the president to lead the cabinet as Chancellor. Hendrik Herz van Swarthout convinced him to run for president in 320 AR, funding his campaign and mobilizing his political and business networks to support him, but he was defeated by Johannes Keiser. Herz van Swarthout and the NCVP then concluded a deal with President Keiser, who was put under pressure by Herz van Swarthout's peers in the Senate and the banking industry, to appoint Barentsz as president of the Batavian National Bank. Rumors are spreading that Barentsz will run for presidency again in 328 AR, also with the support of Herz van Swarthout and his circles. Edited by Nentsia, Jun 5 2014, 07:46 AM.
