So I'm making a page about awesome animes because anime is awesome and the bestest ever, so here we can talk about what we think are good ones and discuss episodes etc.

So I'll suggest a few good ones.

D-Frag: A guy gets dragged into a game creation club run by chicks, they're crazy gamers and hilarity ensues. By Funimation

Log Horizon: Similar to SAO people get trapped in an MMO, but unlike it they can survive death, and decide instead to adapt to their new world and live in it. A good adventurous anime

Kill La Kill : japan is ruled by a school's highschool president and makes uniforms that superpower their capabilities. A single girl stands up to this as a transfer student in a quest to find her father's murderer. Features skimpy clothing and almost naked chicks fighting with swords 8D

Dragon Drive: A kid who lacks motivation in school is introduced to an underground gaming facility where people play Dragon Drive, a 3D virtual simulator where you fight with dragons, he gets a rare dragon never seen before and destiny finds him to be a hero of an alternate universe.

Lol DragonDrive sounds like Accel World, which was created by the same guy as SAO.

My (additional) suggestions:

Cowboy Bebop: A must see for Anime lovers or even people remotely interested in Anime. Widely acknowledged as one of the best Anime of recent times, perhaps even ever. Follows a group of Space Bounty Hunters who have histories they are all trying to address in some way while just trying to eek out a living.

Code Geass: A very popular Mecha anime. Revolves around a young prince's rebellion against his world spanning empire utilizing intellect and a single mysterious power. Great story with awesome twists and characters.

Black Lagoon: A story about a Japanese business man abandoned after his company puts him in a less-than-legal exchange of data. The Business man joins his kidnappers business after realizing the meaninglessness of his life, and tries to make a new life in the criminal run streets of Roanapur Thailand with the crew of the Lagoon. Great anime for it's atmosphere, tone and story. Not PG-13, more like R or M.

Clannad: A slice of life story that I've found bores people who hunger action. But for those who can settle in for a romantic, relatively tame/boring, story, it's damn good story but sad and will leave you wanting to hug all of your family at the end. My favorite anime, probably because it was my first real exposure to non-mainstream anime (E.g. Pokemon, Naruto, etc.) but it has impressively deep emotional base if you view it like the visual novel it was based on, and put yourself basically in the shoes of the protagonist.

Sword Art Online: We've talked about it previously around here. Basically Virtual Reality video games' first MMO traps all of the users in the game and forces them to clear the games main objective to escape. Not a very well done anime due to several story and character points, but good for video game players who are hesitant on watching anime or just love the idea of VR.

Girls Und Panzer: For the World of Tanks players, this is the best thing to infect them with Anime fever. High School Girls battling each other (fairly safely) in WW2 tanks.

Shingeki no Kyojin/Attack on Titan: This year's popular anime compared to last year's Sword Art Online. Humanity has been forced to withdraw within the protection of 50 meter tall walls to survive the onslaught of massive human-like monsters that have the singular goal to eat all of humanity. I'm in the middle of this one but it seems alright.

I second the recommendation of Code Geass. Was my first anime and I loved it.

I also recommend Gundam Seed for sci-fi lovers. Quite a good anime, though not as good as Code Geass.

Such mentalities are why anime hasn't gained as much ground outside of Japan as it probably should have.

Or maybe it's known use of fanservice, it's message to American youth that it is cool to be annoying like the protagonist of Pokemon, and it's dubbed voices tend to be on the loud, obnoxious, unrealistic kind. :P

It's fine to not like qualities of a medium, but this kind of bullshit is like characterizing all of live action television based upon pay-per-view pornography and Jersey Shore. You cannot classify an entire creative medium based upon the characteristics of some of its products. Yes, most Anime is shit shoveled out to make money off whatever manga is popular amongst the otaku...which is much the same as the garbage you'll find on TV, or in the movies, or from the popular places on youtube.

If you haven't encountered any good anime, then fine. That happens to a lot of people, but being an ignorant fuckwit is not how you go about expressing an opinion.

You know, I never was as enthralled with Code Geass as apparently so many others were. I enjoyed it for a while, but quickly tired of it after Lelouch suffers his first few setbacks. He is a smart guy, sure, but I could not see him for the "ömg amazeballs master strategist" the rest of the fandumb saw in him; his plans frequently had no followup or backup to them, often succeeding in his plans or escaping harrowing situations by a mixture of luck, deus ex machina (both the figurative and very, very literal senses), and liberal use of the McGuffin Eye.

The geass itself is probably why I wasn't convinced he was as great as strategist as people thought he was. Had it been something he used sparingly to tilt the outcomes of certain gambits in his favor or to secure an otherwise unknown variable, where he otherwise relied upon rather mundane means of manipulation to get people and powers to fall into his plans or to get out of tough situations, then yeah, I'd concede that he's incredibly intelligent. But again, liberal use of McGuffin Eye ruined it.

One thing I will say that I liked about the anime is that he is a character wholly motivated by revenge, and after a while, you became torn between hoping he succeeds in his plan to give a jingoistic superpower its just desserts...and hoping that he'd fail miserably, so he could stop ruining the lives of everyone around him.

Did you ever finish the series?

I personally hated Lelouche by 3/4 of the way into the series; I thought he was a selfish monster bent by revenge, over abusing his powers but then the end changes everything.

Not quite. I was watching when it was new on TV. I forget where I left off, but I stopped watching after a time because the time it was on TV started to conflict with my new work schedule at the time. Then I saw it on TV one time when I wasn't working and Lelouch suddenly wasn't being made out to be one of the "bad guys" anymore. Can't say I ever cared enough to go back and watch what I missed, mostly because I forgot about it.

Anyway, speaking of all this, I have a couple suggestions I guess. A couple of the anime I'd name as among my favorites (that haven't been mentioned already). In no particular order:

1. Gankutsuou - The Count of Monte Cristo as taking place in the far flung future. Unlike the various bad movies that portray Dantes as the hero, this anime is probably the most faithful to the book itself. The series mostly follows events from the perspective of Albert de Morcerf, the son of Mercédès and Fernand, and the story pretty heavily emphasizes the methodical, devastating consequences of Dantes's revenge upon both the guilty and innocent.

2. The Twelve Kingdoms - Based upon the series of novels of the same name (which are great and you should read them). Several different narratives that take place in a world heavily inspired by ancient Chinese mythology. I admit, I found the protagonist(s?) annoying in the beginning, but the entire series becomes a great exercise in character growth and development, as few of the living characters are ever the same at the end of this as they were in the beginning. Probably my favorite anime of all time, if not for...

3. Samurai Champloo - Think Cowboy Bebop, but in Edo-period Japan, and you basically have this. Follows a ronin, an outlaw, and a girl as they cross Japan in search of the "samurai who smells of sunflowers." Encompasses a lot of the issues of the Edo period, especially when it comes to crime. Lots of anachronism. Lots of hip-hop.
