The Chtonian Times (CT) is an Pythian daily newspaper and news service, founded and continuously published in Tyros since September 18, 241. Aegis Aerospace signs satellite launch deal with Andresian Naval Group

Posted Image

by Jessa Valara | Tyros, Central Chtonia

- Andresian Naval Group signed a contract to launch four small satellites for Aegis Aerospace aboard a new commercial version of a rocket based on decommissioned missile components, the companies said on Thursday.

Southeastern Andresia.-based Naval Group intends to launch four of Aegis Aerospace's planned 16-member satellite network in mid 323. The firm's first satellite, SkySat-1, was launched in January aboard a Pythian Archeron rocket.

The satellites, which are designed to take high-resolution imagery and video of Oracia, will fly together aboard a Minotaur-C rocket from Angelis Air Force Base in Agium, the companies said.

Previous Minotaur rockets incorporated decommissioned Javelin intercontinental ballistic missile components.

The commercial version will replace the government-provided missile motors with four solid fuel rocket motors built by Precision Dynamics , Aegis Aerospace spokesman Captain Jarran Kell said.

The configuration is the same as what Aegis Aerospace uses in its Taurus rocket and is similar to what is flown on the firm's Pegasus booster and two upper stages of the Minotaur 1, Kell said.

"It is the Minotaur engineering and launch team that is developing, testing and will be launching the rocket," he added.

Precision Dynamics also is designing a dispenser that will be flown aboard Minotaur-C and used to put the satellites into 311-mile (500-km) high orbits. From that altitude, the satellites will be able to image objects less than 32 inches (80 cm) in diameter, Aegis Aerospace said in a statement. The company intends to provide a continuous, high-definition video stream of the planet, as well as digital pictures.

Aegis Aerospace and Andresian Naval Group did not release terms of the contract.

PAF Defends Need for New Long-Range Bomber

Posted Image
by Patrick Young | Angelos, Northern Agium

- The Air Force needs more of its new long-range strike bomber, even if it can't give details.

That was the message of a panel held Thursday at the annual Air Force Association Air Warfare Symposium in Angelos, AG.

The panel featured a full-throated defense of the long-range strike bomber as a key asset for the future of the Air Force. The bomber has been identified as one of the big three key modernization programs for the service according to Lt. Gen. Haran Stark, deputy chief of staff for operations, plans and requirements.

"Bombers can send messages. They can influence or initiate action, and they are credible because of what they have done in the past," Stark said, specifically citing events last year when a B-9 bomber flew near South Aurelia. "Bombers can send messages fast, and they send messages with credibility."

Just how those messages would be sent is still unclear. Information on the bomber's use remains sparse, although Stark offered some general hints.

The new sets will be fielded by late 323 with penetrating capability in mind. The service will procure between 40 and 60 of the bombers, which will mostly be made with existing technologies. Those platforms will also have both stand-off and direct-attack munitions and room for a "significant"payload.

Stark clarified after the panel that the 40- to 60 range is more about uncertainty over the price, the service wants to keep total cost for the program under $900 million rather than a figure representing the minimum number of bombers needed to mitigate risk.

Asked whether there would be a ramp in funding in the FY 324 budget, Stark replied: "No, I do not think so."

He also indicated that the bomber would be manned in early production, but the service will look at whether to add unmanned capabilities down the road. Though still in the late protoype stages, the Pythian Military has already purchased half a dozen B-9s from Aegis Aerospace.

Itanas Corruption Inquiry: Commission Set To Get Underway

Posted Image
by Genevieve Bhoutas | Adrantis, Eastern Itanas

- A public inquiry with possibly devastating political ramifications has begun in Itanas with the presiding judge outlining the ambitious task before her: to uncover a network of corruption in the province. Governor Asterian Corvo had been under intense pressure to hold a public inquiry, given mounting allegations of kickback schemes in municipal politics and allegations at the provincial level of conflicts-of-interest and unsavory partisan fundraising practices.

When Corvo finally called the inquiry, after two years of public pressure, he initially sought to limit the commission's mandate and wanted the most controversial witnesses appearing behind closed doors. Corvo backed down again amid a public outcry.

Judge Redford has since sought to expand her commission's powers. She gently nudged provincial legislators on Tuesday to quickly approve a bill that would give her the ability to inspect and seize documents. Along with a sizable legal team, the commission has assembled a stable of police officers, engineers, notaries and accountants to comb through a growing mountain of documents.

Redford said her probe would be animated by a desire to denounce and fix flaws in Itanas' public-procurement our system. Part of her mandate includes interviewing experts and examining international practices.A special task force in Itanas has been simultaneously running criminal investigations into the construction industry, and has charged several dozen people since 322.

Among those charged are former elected municipal politicians, the current mayor of Hyele, It., engineers and construction entrepreneurs.

Pythian Forces Seize Tanker Carrying Weapons to Aurelian Port

Posted Image
by Adrian Vasovic| Illefar, Northeastern Chtonia

- Pythian special forces have seized a tanker heading for an Aurelian port believed to be carrying black market weapons. A commando team boarded the tanker Sunrise from a Naval special warfare rigid inflatable boat as it tried to pass through Pythian waters off Agium on Sunday night.

The seizure was approved by the Imperator and requested by the Chief Justice, sources say.

No one was hurt in the under two hour operation, and no shots fired. All of the crew remain in Pythian control along with weapons and fighter jets hidden under sacks of sugar.

Three members of the crew are facing arms trafficking charges. The captain, the first officer and the political officer of the Sunrise face sentences of up to 12 years. The other 32 crew members were released without charge.

Government Announces New Progressive and Unanticipated Shift in Foreign Policy

Posted Image
by Jessa Valara | Tyros, Central Chtonia

- For the first time in modern Pythian history the Triumvirate has officially announced the prospect of granting permission to foreign nations to establish embassies within the country. The announcement hails an unprecedented shift from traditional Pythian isolationist policies maintained over the past three centuries. Foreign relations had begun wandering down a slow but positive path over the last century with trade protocols being eased with neighboring nations. Recent months also saw a major milestone when the government decided to selectively open up some of its Arms and Heavy industry to foreign nations.

"Pythos seeks to expand its diplomacy by allowing embassies to be built by prospective bilateral partners on the continent and beyond. Not only is this a stepping stone for us to take a more active role in world affairs but it opens new doors in our relations with the rest of Oracia," Foreign Minister Acacius said.

Foreign diplomats have been formerly invited to the capital for discussions of Economy, Investment, Trade, Environment, Development and World Affairs.

Pythos launches large-scale naval drill in Daufusk Sea

Posted Image
by Natalia Zinets | Eretrias, Agium

-Some 20 warships, over 20 airplanes and helicopters, as well as the marines and coast artillery are taking part in the Daufusk Sea Fleet exercise, Pythian Defense Ministry reported. The war games launched the same day as a wave of border violence shook Northern Chtonia amid growing tensions between Pythos and Aurelia.

Starting from July 4, the scheduled training maneuvers are conducted in the whole of the North Sea, the Ministry told journalists on Friday, adding the drill is being carried out according to international standards.

"The exercise plan involves performance of a number of combat training missions, including destruction of enemy naval forces at sea and organizing naval and coastal air defense," the Ministry explained.

Under command of Admiral Lysander Archidamus, the Pythian military of the North Sea Fleet will also exercise in the search, detection and destruction of imaginary enemy submarines. Coordinated actions between naval forces, coastal units and aviation are being practiced within the maneuvers.

"Coastal troops and the marines will drill battling with tactical assault force, while airplanes of the fleet air will be engaged in air reconnaissance and targeting "enemy" ships," the Defense Ministry said.

36 Pythian Troops Killed as Transport Plane Downed in Northern Chtonia

Posted Image
by Adrian Vasovic| Illefar, Northeastern Chtonia | February 19, 328

-Thirty-nine Pythian troops were killed when their military T-130 "Pegasus" transport jet was taken down by Aesti militia forces just before it started its descent toward Naxos Airport. Some military hardware and supplies were lost as well.

The death toll was confirmed by the Pythian General Prosecutor's office this morning in a statement, which said nine crew members and 30 troops were killed. Earlier the Defense Ministry said the troops were being transported to the Naxos Airport for rotation along with military equipment and supplies. The downing of the plane overnight Friday was apparently the biggest single loss of Pythian forces in half a century. Violence has escalated along the border with Aurelia, prompting Pythian officials to denounce Aurelia`s failure to control their borders as intentional aggression.

Pythian Navy, Pirates Exchange Gunfire

Posted Image

by Ionnaq Klonic| Angelos, Northern Agium | March 4, 328

-Pythos' navy has reportedly foiled a pirate attack on a Pythian oil tanker in the Daufusk Sea. The ship came under attack on Thursday morning after armed assailants on board eight boats approached the tanker.

The 5th Fleet of the Pythian Navy was patrolling the area, and rushed to assist the vessel upon its distress call. Navy crewmen managed to stop the attack on the tanker after getting engaged in a gun fight, subsequently forcing the pirates to retreat. No injuries were reported among the crews of the Pythian ships.

The Pythian Navy has been conducting patrols in the Daufusk Sea since September 3, 318. It has successfully managed to foil several attacks on tankers during its missions in international waters, including two earlier this month.

Air Sainam to Be First Non-Syntrealite Carrier to Fly the Pythian Route

Posted Image
by Jessa Valara | Tyros, Central Chtonia | March 5, 328

-The news follows the Triumvirate's recent announcements that it would be seeking to rejoin the international stage. The airline will be hosting one flight daily during the week, with three on fridays and two every saturday. The announcement has been hailed as positive by the majority of Pythians, sparking an outburst of flight and travel purchases. It marks a major shift in Pythian interests, many of whom rarely travel off the Novreal Island to sate their exploration needs.

Analysts predict Sainam will become a premier destination for Pythian tourists seeking to visit new cultures over the ocean. The route new between the two nations establishes a foothold for Pythians into Zaroca, the only such route since the Provinces united.
