No Mandatory Service? Yes Military strengths: Military Culture- Galaxias have required military requirements to fulfill from the ages of 15 to 30. Even after this period, a majority still serve in the reserves. This ethos has led to a famous saying, "You only see the back of a Galaxis when they're dead." In war, all Galaxias are fearsome opponents, no matter civilian or military. Galaxias warfare revolves around "total" warfare, in a conflict, no one is safe from Galaxias armies or navies. Galaxias will settle for only the unconditional surrender or total destruction of their opponents. Military-Industrial Complex- There is a highly developed relation between the Bureaucracy, Military, and Defense Contractors. Most major corporations are large, government-sponsored collectives that provide a huge source of income to fund the government. During times of war, the entire economy can quickly move into a wartime state, producing the ships, vehicles, arms and supplies that defend the Imperium. Military weaknesses: "No Defeat, No Surrender"- For most Galaxias the concept of surrender is an impossible thought. To a Galaxias, surrender is for lesser beings and will often times fight to the death instead retreating or surrendering. Orbital Bombardment Capability: Yes, Turbolaser fire [/tab] [tab=Technology] Technological advantage: Hypermatter Reactor- Galaxias main power source comes from the destruction of hypermatter, tachyonic matter that exists in hyperspace. This advanced technology provides Galaxias a huge amount of power, unmatched by either fusion, fission or antimatter sources, to use to power their weapons, technology and vehicles. Technological disadvantage: Hypercritical- Hypermatter is notoriously unstable and when a hypermatter core goes hypercritical, the destruction unleashed is almost unmatched in the galaxy. GR-213-17 "Citizenship Tiers" Galactic beings enter the Galaxias Tier system though two ways, birth to citizens of the Imperium or though a lengthy application process. All new citizens are placed at Tier One, regardless of age, education or past expedience. Tier Two is achieved when a citizens begins basic training or starts their public service. Tier Three is achieved at the successful completion of basic training or public service. Tiers 4-5 are given automatically based on years of service or citizenship, but in some cases, citizens can be acclerated though based on recommendations from higher tier citizens. Tiers 6-11 is where most citizens stay during their tenure in the Imperial Armed Forces, many do not advance above Tier 11 their whole lives. From Tier 12 on, there are limited positions so that the best citizens can be chosen to represent the Imperium. Tiers 12-19 can be sometimes confusing for non-Imperium beings. The way the system works is that Citizens advance to Kommandant Consult, then to Kommandant. Then they drop back down to Executor Consult then to Executor. The system is designed so that the consults are seen as "in-training" in preparation for their position whatever it may be.
An Excerpt from The Imperium: A Human Perspective by Dr. Kolbo Amarati, PhD The Galaxias Imperium: Macro Perspective Government: The Galaxias Imperium is a meritocratic oligarchy. I the first point that needs to be emphasized is that Galaxias, outside of their strong military ethos, do not share many similarities with Rome. The Roman Republic and Principate era of Imperial Rome were generally plutocratic; in order to be considered a senator or equestrian (knight), families needed to possess a certain amount of material wealth. It was possible, though difficult, for a commoner family to become equestrians or even senators over several generations or vice versa. Instead, the Imperium closely resembles Imperial China; both governments emphasize social order through a strong, centralized bureaucracy. Beginning in the Sui Dynasty, any man in China could take a rigorous series of examinations to join the civil service. Degrees conferred by the examinations were not hereditary, and children of a degree-holder would need to take their own set of exams. Although the emperor decided matters of the greatest importance, it was these scholar-bureaucrats who generally controlled the day-to-day operations of the empire during most of the Chinese dynasties from Sui onward. Galaxias practice a similar sort of rule--Prefects vote on matters that could impact the entire species but otherwise trust that their subordinates are doing their jobs properly. Instead of examinations, however, they rely on peer review. Centralized meritocracies of this sort can be justified using two rationales: one idealistic, one cynical. Ideally, the method used to pro/demote citizens into their societal role is impartial, valid, and reliable, and truly talented people rise into positions that they should be in. More cynically, examinations and peer reviews are excellent methods of social control; they ensure that those who will support the status quo are promoted, and those with ideas that are considered dangerous or reactionary are excluded. Indeed, one of the most important sections on the civil service examinations were the Confucian classics; in order to receive a passing grade, one wanted to justify the officially-sanctioned interpretation of those texts, not rock the boat and attempt to offer anything too world-shaking. Philosophy: Mainstream Galaxias ethics are generally consequential--the moral good or evil of an act is determined by the consequences of that act, not the act itself. Unlike the classical utilitarianism espoused by Bentham however, Galaxias do not believe that "good" is defined by greatest individual happiness for the greatest possible number of people. Instead, they believe that "good" is defined by any actions that positively contribute to the stability of the state. Thus, the human philosophy that has the most in common with the Hierarchy is state (AKA Mohist) consequentialism. So, what's Mohism? It's a Chinese philosophy that grew out of the Warring States period (you might best know this as the period where Confucianism, a competing philosophical school, originated). According to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, central elements of the Mohist philosophy include: 1) Advocacy of a unified ethical and political order grounded in a utilitarian ethic emphasizing impartial concern for all 2) Active opposition to military aggression and injury to others 3) Devotion to utility and frugality and condemnation of waste and luxury 4) Support for a centralized, authoritarian state led by a virtuous, benevolent sovereign and managed by a hierarchical, merit-based bureaucracy 5) Reverence for and obedience to Heaven and the ghosts worshiped in traditional folk religion. The assumption that people naturally want to do what they believe is right, and with proper moral education will submit to the correct set of ethical norms supplied by said virtuous, benevolent sovereign and the merit-based bureaucracy. Most people will argue that the central tenet of Galaxias philosophy is the military and that runs contrary to the Mohist thrust that military aggression should be opposed, I say not. Mohists are not against a strong military, they are only against military aggression. Many Mohists during the Warring States Period were defense-minded tacticians, and in fact a quarter of the Mozi is devoted to recounting a history of their militias and is filled with advice on siege fortifications and other defensive tactics. Some Mohists applied these teachings not only to their own communities, but to China at large: if any city became the victim of an unprovoked attack, they would rush to defend it. Mohists emphasized that reason and diplomacy should be attempted first and often attempted to proactively talk warlords down before they attacked, but had no qualms about firing up the war machine once other options were exhausted. Galaxias political philosophy does, however, vary in a couple of ways from classical Mohism. For one, Galaxias enjoy absolute freedom of religion provided that religion doesn't interfere with duty. Monists insist that their subjects subscribe to the traditional heterodox system of Chinese religion. This Galaxias freedom, however, can still be explained within a Mohist context. Galaxias enjoy absolute freedom of religion provided that religion doesn't interfere with duty. In other words, the Galaxias 'right' to free expression is much closer to a privilege—a contract drawn up by the Imperium and extended to each individual rather than a natural right--a privilege that exists because the enlightened members of the Imperium have tried it and found that it works toward the goal of promoting societal stability. The rest of the broad Galaxias social freedoms--drug use, relatively loose sexual mores, the choice to opt-out of boot, and so forth--can all be explained in a similar manner to religion; hedonism--provided that it operates at a positive or neutral net benefit to the state--is respectively either encouraged or generally permissible. The point about Galaxias being taught to 'own their decisions' isn't trivial--although the Imperium is willing to provide resources necessary for individual pleasure, it also reminds Galaxias that these resources come from the rest of society and should be used wisely. The take-away point about Galaxias civil liberties is as follows: there are very few things that the Imperium explicitly bans, but there are a variety of behaviors that are considered taboo, and because of the massive emphasis that Galaxias place on community, societal pressure on its own is usually enough to discourage Galaxias from any actions that the state considers undesirable. Economy: The Imperium economy can be characterized as progressive corporatism, with the vast amount of wealth controlled by the government and large, government-sponsored collectives like Armax Arsenal and Haliat Armory. Sepantus conglomerates like the Elkoss Combine are not bound by regulations as strictly as purely Galaxias interests, but are generally subject to the same or similarly high levels of taxation. The Imperium uses government revenue to sustain its military and an all-encompassing welfare system, including universal health care, public education, infrastructure, and a variety of state-run orphanages, subsidized housing for homeless and low-tier citizens, and nursing homes. Official unemployment is near zero owing to the size and stability of most Imperium corporations, and in the rare case of layoffs, most Galaxias can easily transfer back to active duty within the military. Base salary is determined by citizenship tier, not industry; income is largely flat across a tier. Tax burden is both high and progressive. It, like base salary, is determined by the citizenship tier. The lowest tiers pay approximately 25% of their base salary, while and other high-tier citizens often pay in excess of 80%. Dissatisfaction with the system is relatively low as taxation is in line with the popular notion of more talent equaling more responsibility, and the government, rather than the individual, being the best arbiter of responsibility. Entrepreneurship is rare for a variety of reasons: lack of cultural interest, the necessity of hiring a large compliance team to ensure governmental regulations are satisfied, the probable necessity of hiring a team of non-turian accountants to ensure financial solvency, and the tendency for large interests to buy up turian inventors with lucrative offers of employment and citizenship tier increases in exchange for their patents and ideas. Like entrepreneurship, individual investment is almost nonexistent outside of low-risk options like savings accounts, CDs, and governmental bonds, which Galaxias usually resort to only when saving for major purchases; regardless of social class, Galaxias normally live paycheck-to-paycheck. The Imperium: Micro Perspective Now we can zoom in and apply these political and philosophical frameworks to individual Galaxias. What is life like for your average Galaxias loyalist out there? Arguably, Galaxias culture is cyclical and works in a self-reinforcing manner. We'll start by taking a look at the central Galaxias relationship paradigm and then progress through a Galaxias life stages. Before we begin, however, it is important to note that the following perspective assumes that a Galaxias is raised traditionally. Galxias raised in cosmopolitan or completely alien environments are likely to take a more heterodox, nuanced view of "Galaxias-hood", especially if they are homeschooled, sent to a pan-species school, or have at least one parent that is not a Imperium citizen. Stable-Style Galaxias Relationships--The Mentor/Protégé Dynamic: Regardless of the relationship between two Galaxias: drill instructor and recruit, Sae'tzar and citizen, parent and child, mate and mate, all (stable) Galaxias relationships are based on what I normally refer to as the “dominant/submissive” or “mentor/protégé dynamic.” When any two Galaxias interact, one individual normally acts as the “mentor,” while the other acts as the “protégé.” “Mentors” take on the role of protector, tutor, and decision-maker; they are expected to nurture the “protégé” and take an active hand in molding them into the Imperium ideal while acting as a beacon of moral character and stability. A “protégé,” on the other hand, is a good listener. He is usually allowed to ask questions and offer suggestions, but almost always falls in line with the “mentor's” suggestion/command once the “mentor's” decision is finalized. Depending on context (On-duty? Off-duty?) and personal closeness, the M/P dynamic is normally on a sliding scale between rigid and formalized (“cold”) or more flexible and informal (“warm”). When a relationship is “cold”, the dominant Galaxias tends to be forceful and expects a protégé to fall in line with little or no fuss. There is little emotional involvement; the relationship is strictly based on chain-of-command. “Warm” relationships, on the other hand, are characterized by endearment and the opportunity for shared growth. The mentor and the protege display a form of love--let's classify it as philia--toward one another. Mentors see the vast, untapped potential in their protégés and are determined to closely nurture them as is their duty, while the protégé looks to the mentor for both professional and emotional support. Although “warm” relationships are usually platonic, they often include a sexual component assuming shared physical attraction and compatible orientation. In such cases, the intimacy is used to express mutual feelings of trust and satisfaction, the Galaxias equivalent of "making love." It is important to note, however, that this is not an expression of love between two individuals but between two roles. In other words, the mentor/protégé aren't expressing affection directly for each other but for how well they are stepping into their respective role; each partner sees their counterpart as an exceptional embodiment of what their opposite number should be and expresses this in an intense, physical manner. Because each partner wants to display how well their opposite number embodies their archetype, sexual roles are rigidly defined—the mentor is the active partner: s/he leads by initiating contact and setting the pace. Galaxias generally have several tens of platonic “warm” relationships and a handful or more of sexually-active ones by the time they leave active duty. Galaxias mates—I prefer the term mate as opposed to husband or wife because the term removes some of the exclusivity and individuality implied by the other two—is an especially “warm” relationship with a single other individual. Ideally, a Galaxias's mate should be the person who enriches his or her loyalty to the Imperium and the Cause the most. The selection is often made after considerable input from family members, peers, and superiors and is often drawn from the pool of “warm” relationships that an individual cultivated during boot and active duty. Mates are highly committed and loyal, though relationships are often partially open due to the Galaxias' tolerant attitude toward casual sex. Occasional sexual encounters outside the relationship are normally tolerated provided an individual's mate signs off in advance, but outright cheating, as a form of lying, is considered a grievous offense and is one of the most shameful acts for a Galaxias other than desertion. A few important caveats and notes before we move to the unstable-style Galaxias relationship: A mentor and protégé are typically locked in a default role towards one another, but they may undergo a temporary role reversal in certain situations, especially when the duo are mates. For example, Galaxias X is normally the mentor in his relationship with Galaxias Y. However, Galaxias Y is uncharacteristically good with money for a turian. If the couple makes a joint financial decision, Galaxias Y may temporarily adopt the mentor role. Because of the lack of cultural proscriptions against homo and bisexuality, sexual orientation in Galaxias likely follows a much more uniform or Gaussian distribution along the Kinsey scale than the (arguably)bimodal distribution of humanity. Although Galaxias in sexually-active "warm" relationships use intimacy as a mark of trust, they still employ sex as a method of shared pleasure with their partner. The mood in such a session is usually much less serious and sexual roles are not as strictly defined. Because of Galaxias sociology, jealousy is a much less severe issue among shared "warm" relationship partners than it would be among humanity. For example, if a Galaxias is a sexually-active protégé to two different mentors, the mentors might say that they each nurture the protégé but do so in different ways. Because of their shared love for the protégé, the two mentors might then start a "warm" relationship--platonic or sexual--amongst themselves, as well. Galaxias still feel and display the same desires, emotions, and personalities that humans do, and thus it would be foolish to assert that the mentor/protégé dynamic is the only factor at work in Galaxias relationships--it is just the main factor. Individual desires and emotions are usually marginalized for the good of society, but they are often important supporting factors in determining who a Galaxias will associate with. Unstable-Style Galaxias Relationships: Galaxias normally slide easily and naturally into a dominant or submissive role with one another. There are many factors that they consciously and unconsciously use to make this distinction when they first meet someone new: Is s/he in a higher or lower citizenship tier than me? Because the Galaxias are a highly regimented and militarized society, they wear some indication of their rank on their clothing when in public in all but the most informal situations. Is his/her military/public service record more impressive than my own? If Galaxias find that they are in identical citizenship tiers, they often ask each other about their days in boot and slowly begin to slide into mentor/protégé roles as they determine who has done more for the Imperium. Galaxias who take an active role in the war machine and serve on the front lines—infantry, sniping, corpsmen, and similar positions—are generally held in higher regard than those that served in a support capacity, say the merchant marine, historians, or intelligence. Failing to find a significant difference in the above criteria, does s/he seem to naturally have a more assertive personality than I do? Agreeable, unopinionated Galaxias normally become protégés. If the above criteria fail to create a stable-style relationship, most Galaxias feel a general sense of unease. In most situations, they will finish their business with the other person, politely say their goodbyes, walk away, and usually will not freely associate with the other individual again unless directed to by a superior, a conscious or unconscious attempt to maintain social stability by not causing unnecessary conflict. However, if those two Galaxias are unsupervised and especially if strong-willed, a so-called “unstable” relationship may form. The progression of unstable-style relationships is as follows: 1)Two Galaxias meet and discover they cannot establish a stable-style relationship. 2)The Galaxias get into an argument and are too stubborn to back down AND an authority figure isn't present to resolve the conflict. 3)The argument typically results in an altercation, often physical if they meet in person. If both are equally matched, the two typically develop a grudging respect for one another, and an unstable-style relationship is formed. Galaxias in an unstable-style relationship are so called, "frenemies;" they're the two people that you always see bickering with each other but never seem to be apart for long periods. The two individuals continually try and “one-up” one another with barbs ranging in severity from minor snarks and pranks to outright brawls in an attempt to assert dominance. Sometimes, this tension is resolved quickly: one partner manages to deliver a “one-up” that is sufficiently humbling for the other Galaxias that they fall into a protégé role, or a superior steps in and breaks up the constant scuffling on account of it being disruptive. In other cases, the relationship remains in an unstable state indefinitely. If there's physical attraction in addition to an unstable relationship, things really get interesting, and the two Galaxias wind up in a spiral of belligerent sexual tension that they may or may not readily admit to. The Kids Are Alright (Birth-15): Most conventional Galaxias parent their children in a similar manner to how they are supervised by the Imperium. From a young age, Galaxias are taught 'rules of fair play', teamwork, and a healthy amount of deference to authority figures like teachers, military police, and the Sae'tzar. Children are encouraged to perform to the best of their abilities, but outright competition with other peers is discouraged. As long as these core precepts are met, Galaxias parents tend to be watchful but laissez-faire in the affairs of their children, trusting that if a kid does begin to get on the wrong track, either they or someone else in the community will notice. Parents deeply love their children, but their sense of love differs from that of a typical human family. Mainstream Galaxias culture typically depicts raising a child as one of the highest and most beautiful expressions of loyalty to the Imperium--they enrich the population, and, when properly raised, can contribute an immeasurable amount of good to society. The (ideal) love of a Galaxias parent isn't based on blood or a strong sense of personal pride in a child's accomplishments. Instead, it is based on the satisfaction of molding a child into a model, self-sacrificing instrument of the Imperium. It is a slightly more personal version of the same sort of philia that any supervising Galaxias is expected to give their subordinates. As previously stated, this is not to say that Galaxias don't feel more traditionally Western-emphasized forms of love; they simply take a background role to the officially-sanctioned form. Galaxias generally attend state-run schools and academies which supply a basic foundation of math, science, language, history, and physical education. However, there are also formalized, mandatory classes on 'Galaxias culture' which help to strengthen teamwork and implicit trust of superiors and subordinates. This is further reinforced by classroom pedagogy in the other subjects: collaboration and group work are encouraged. Students are introduced to a watered-down version of the citizenship tier system early: they are screened for aptitude and placed in advanced, academic, or remedial sections upon entrance into school. A student's performance is later used to personalize his or her recommended career path once they reach boot. Parents are also free to home-school or send their children to a pan-species school/private institution, but the Imperium sets minimum core standards that must be met before a child can progress to boot, including 'Galaxias culture' classes and mandatory standardized tests so that officials can keep abreast of an individual's progress. Boot Camp (15-16): Boot and the period of military service in its wake acts as a capstone for an adolescent Galaxias's previous life experiences and is arguably the most important societal institution the Imperium has to ensure the loyalty of its subjects. On induction into boot camp, Galaxias are subdivided into cadres based on their estimated aptitude and measured performance in school. The initial year ("boot") consists of demanding weapons training, drills, and further team-building exercises. There is also a classroom component--as legal adults who are no longer under the supervision of their parents, boot inductees likely go through adult life classes--household budgeting, cooking, and sex ed. Recruits are routinely monitored throughout the initial training year in order to further evaluate what role they would best play in the Imperium military. Individuals are generally presented with a list of recommended roles that their supervisors feel would suit them best after graduating from boot--recruits are not under any legal obligation to select a recommended role, but strong Galaxias cultural emphasis on self-sacrifice ensures that most will accept one of their recommended posts. Although boot is technically optional, it--like a recruit's specialization recommendations-- is strongly encouraged via societal pressure. A general understanding exists that unless a Galaxias is incapable of attending, they should if they want to be considered a 'true' Galaxias. It is possible for Galaxias who don't progress through boot to be promoted to tiers 2, 3, and beyond, but they must commit themselves to a rigorous one-year period of community service as agreed upon by their peers and superiors, generally right before they finish public school, to advance to tier 2, and successfully complete said service to reach tier 3. It is also harder for them to find their place in society—most prestigious careers require a tier well beyond level 3, and Galaxias who stay in the military network and typically advance in tiers. Galaxias stuck at tiers 1-3 have few options: leave the Imperium and attempt to strike it rich in other sectors, attend a 'late-entry' program to rejoin the military, or eke out a meager existence thanks to the Imperium's robust welfare system which ensures that the Galaxias will never go hungry, but also ensures that they will never live down the massive societal stigma of not having given everything they possibly could have to the Cause. Active Duty (16-About 30): Galaxias who continue to active duty choose a military specialty—piloting, engineering, cyberwarfare, sniping/tactical operations, and infantry duty are among the most popular and prestigious choices, although a variety of other options exist. Most teams work and travel in close proximity and soldiers of one specialty often associate with members of another, which facilitates networking for careers after active duty. Those who have just graduated from boot and have been assigned to their initial position are watched closely for a year or two in order to ascertain whether or not they are successful in their posting. Galaxias who perform well are promoted and begin to rise through the citizenship tier system on their own; those that do not are typically shuffled around into a couple different specialties to see if they improve. If it is apparent that a recruit is putting forth significant effort but simply does not possess the potential to advance, superiors begin to ease off and ensure that the Tier 3 individual is comfortable in their role. Because of their education, most turians accept their standing without much difficulty, but some become discouraged. A mentor might attempt to soothe the discouraged Tier 3 with a statement like “sometimes the smallest cogs can be the most vital.” Although many Galaxias at the front end of active duty engage in sex and relationships in the same way that members of boot do—in a casual and exploratory manner—a significant number begin cultivating romantic “warm” relationships, especially once they reach the second half of duty in their early 20s. Galaxias 'dating', however, is still in its early stages; most Galaxias don't settle on a mate until they leave active duty and have settled down. Late Young Adulthood (About 30-About 55): At 30, Galaxias have one of two options: remain in the military, become a 'lifer' and a senior NCO or officer, or retire from active duty and attempt to build a career. Most turians who take the latter option use their peer connections and recommendations from their officers to secure jobs in the vast Imperium military-industrial complex. A crack marksman, for example, might secure a job as a consultant on sniper rifles at Armax Arsenal. When a turian is promoted within a corporation, they typically send a commendation to the Imperium which raises the turian's citizenship tier accordingly. Others opt for graduate school, especially those who are interested in politics, education, medicine, or research positions. Imperium citizens normally qualify for a substantial tier promotion once completing an advanced degree. The exact promotion usually varies slightly based on their performance in school, but is most gain around 5 tiers for the successful completion of a master's level program and 10 tiers for a doctorate. Although Galaxias university programs in the arts and most of the social sciences outside of history are the stuff of punchlines (and in some cases lack such programs entirely), they consistently rank at or near the top in the applied sciences, especially in engineering, military science, surgical and emergency medicine, and other “hands-on” subjects. The press also praises Galaxias universities for the enthusiasm of research mentors and developing the 'whole person;' all students, Galaxias or not, need to pass core classes in survival skills, Galaxias morality, and physical education. Students of Galaxias universities graduate fit, well-connected, and with little tolerance for (or, more cynically, understanding of) the academic backroom politics common in the other species. Regardless of their exact career path, most Galaxias remain registered in the reserves after retiring from active duty, as society generally expects most adults in this age bracket are still in prime physical condition to serve. If a Galaxias is severely injured on the front lines during active duty, he is still typically able (and willing) to adapt to a support role in the reserves. Their experience is generally like most reserves—most undergo one weekend of training per month when not on active duty. On the relationship front, most Galaxias begin to look for a mate in earnest once they reach the age of 30. As previously mentioned, a Galaxias normally selects their mate from a handful of sexually-active "warm" relationships that they cultivated during their active-duty stint. The process for finding a Galaxias ideal mate can take several years, with the peers, superiors, and family members of both individuals offering their own input and attempting to reach a consensus as to who the individual's ideal mate should be. Once a decision is reached, however, courtship follows quickly. Because mates are usually quite familiar with each other by the time they are officially declared a couple, they normally start a family quite rapidly. Fertile heterosexual mates normally conceive their own children, while infertile and homosexual couples either create designer babies or adopt. All options are viewed positively; live births increase the Imperium's population, while adoptions allow the state to offload the responsibility and cost of raising a child to private citizens. Middle Age (About 55-About 95): Middle age presents another crossroads. For most low (sub-CT 11) and mid-ranked (CT 12-21) Galaxias, it is a very productive and happy time; a period of finding one's niche. Evaluations and peer review become more infrequent as a Galaxias is trusted to self-supervise, and their citizenship tier normally stagnates. Galaxias at or above tier 20, however, have a more strenuous time--during early middle age, they are typically monitored closely by the Galaxus and their direct subordinates. Those that pass their scrutiny are asked to resign from their posts and become key governmental bureaucrats, generals, and admirals and ascend to the very highest tiers (25, 26, and 27) in the process. Galaxias also have the satisfaction of watching their children enlist in boot camp and active service. Because of medical advances, Galaxias women don't experience menopause until their 70s or 80s, and it is not uncommon for mates to rear a second group of children in their early middle age. Old Age (About 95-Death at approx. 150): Galaxias generally do not fully retire of their own volition; a typical saying among the elderly is "I'll rest when I'm dead." Even at their advanced age, most are still members of the reserves, although the vast majority of those eventually have to opt for support roles as their fitness begins to decline. A similar situation exists at the office: most Galaxias continue to work, although superiors will reduce their responsibility load and, accordingly, their citizenship tier if their health or cognition begins to fail. As the elderly Galaxias are doing everything in their capacity to contribute, there is no stigma for an old age demotion; it is often viewed romantically in popular Galaxias culture--"marching with the setting sun." Most settle down close to one of their children and help to raise their grandchildren and great-grandchildren during their off-duty hours. Many provide entertainment in the form of wild stories about their tenure in boot or active duty. Moving close to a child serves a second purpose: it allows that child and his peer group to monitor the elder's relative health. The vast majority of Galaxias die while still independent and in reasonably good health; the Imperium's network of nursing and assisted living facilities care for those with chronic or terminal illness. Imperial Navy Task Group Note 1: MR-435-08 is a list of standard Imperial Galaxias Navy task groups. However, Galaxus's, Praetor's, and Precentor's have the right and are encouraged to modify the standard task group structure to meet their needs, therefore MR-435-08 should be taken as a guideline not a rigid structure. Note 2: Not all starships in the Imperial Galaxias Navy are included, specifically no corvettes, star destroyers and battlecrusiers. Paired star destroyers and lone battlecrusiers can be considered taskgroups by themselves. Corvettes are not considered as part of a taskgroup and can be assigned and reassigned as seen fit.
