With regards to sectors... perhaps claiming sectors isnt necessary? I don't know how big these sectors are after all, but if they're large, or even moderately sized, would it be a bad idea to allow multiple factions to colonize planets in a sector? Space is a big place, and you can potentially do a lot without anybody finding out. Obviously there would be tensions to the whole situation, and if a certain faction were to claim a sector, then colonization of planets within would be provoking the claimant, should they find out. You could potentially have a whole system colonized before an enemy could find you, if they didnt do regular patrols, and lets be honest, what faction has the manpower and fleet strength to patrol every empty system in their claimed sector all the time. Needless to say, I like the idea of unclaimed sectors. If someone gets enough power, then they can claim it, but until then it's just a nominal claim at best |

I feel like Sectors would be odd as Space lacks those physical boundaries a planet has, perhaps it would be better to focus on habitable planets and their neighboring uninhabitables as units for colonization? Just an idea |

I just want to put in my two cents on the space travel bit. It is my expierience that allowing all forms of FTL travel is the best way to go about it. Makes things more unique as different civilizations can develope their own ways to beat light. There may need to be some restrictions on Wormholes/gates as that can be nearly instantaneous travel opposed to Hyperspace or other sorts of drives which requires a mean time where the spaceship travels through another dimension or does something crazy. Point being they have a travel time. To compensate a wormhole/gate/warp thing could have limits to the speed at which they can be created, their longevity, and their power consumption. I imagine that for such a thing to exist on a ship it would require it to be quite large. And any sort of permanent wormhole/warp/gate thing would be limited to Point A-B travel. Hope you like my idea. |

We're a bit past that point Caesar, should have commented sooner. Though in regards to your statement, I have found the literal opposite, unique FTL systems are all nice for the creativity section, but the practicality section, I've found, favours a singular system. It maintains everyone on a level field without attempts to loophole, or rather simply create, some advantage. |
