![]() Atulke Decides: Campaigning for 2028 Elections Begins ![]() An election booth in Izara, Xylosia, Atulke The Atul Republic has a long, complicated history with the word democracy. But with the nation's first elections to the Paciun parliament in its first days, it seems to be a positive change. President Baikal Nars has registered under the banner of the United Citizen's Party, while Anton Slavio will be running for the independent and nationalist Atulke Communist Party, which opposes Paciun integration. But the Labor Party, which has absorbed most of the Communist Party, is running with Kors Belin. Atulke's Minister President is elected by the Atul delegation to the Pacium Union's parliament, and has the dual role of being the leader of the Atul delegation, and being tasked by the constitution with "The Defence of Atul Culture". The Paciun integration has left the Minister President with a largely ceremonial role, but nevertheless important, as he also serves as the barometer for public opinions of the Atul people. The elections have been called by analysts as being too close to call, with Baikal Nars losing his grasp on political dominance, but Anton Slavio is not considered by analysts as a serious oppotent, with Atul support for the union floating at a lofty 82%. What follows is a profile of the candidates, prepared by a team of both left and right leaning experts. Baikal Nars A libertarian conservative, Baikal Nars has been seen as an idealist and an optimist, however he has been known for playing 'hardball'. He was a political behemoth in his day, but with the Atul economy continuing to lag, his popularity has flagged. He has opposed stimulus spending and has instead imposed austerity, a controversial move. Despite some growth, it has been seen by the people as being too slow to compensate for the high damages they suffered in the Atul Civil War. His support for the oligarchy has also created significant friction with intellectuals. It should be said, his administration has led to historical growth rates and widespread democratization of Atul institutions. Anton Slavio Although analysts do not predict a win from Slavio, his opposition to homosexuality, prostitution, gambling, and capitalism will gain him a large section of elderly voters. His foreign policy is protectionist, nationalistic, and some have accused him of jingoism, especially against Sunia. His party has adhered to more traditional Communist policies, although most of the Communist Party was absorbed into the Labor Party. Slavio has a small track record, so he cannot be analyzed fully. Kors Belin A bit of a history lesson is warranted with Belin. He was selected the leader of the Communist Party at the young age of 21 in the days of the Atul Union. As the Commissar-Chairman, he allowed for democratic elections between three Communist Party members. Belin enshrined sentient rights and the right to a trial in the Atul constitution,a key step forward for human rights in the Atul Union. He also opened up records about the darker times of the Union, and strived to improve the nation. His reform were cut short by Baikal Nars, who called a vote of no confidence, the first of its kind. Belin resigned and retreated to his hometown of Wadi Gameel. But now, he has returned in full force, running on a center-left platform of small business subsidies, employment grants, and a promise to break up monopolies. He has already gathered the young and the poor around him in a bloc, and is expected to be a formidable rival to Nars. |

![]() Atulke Decides: Rumble in the Tower ![]() Suyin Tower One, considered an icon of Communist architecture The Atul elections have intensified in these recent months as the polls have shown a tight gap leading into the first and only major debate of this election, which will take place on the top floor of Suyin Tower One, which dominates the skyline of the former capital. Baikal Nars maintained a razor thin lead of 50.2% in bipartisan polls just three days before. What follows is a partial transcript with highlights of the hour-long debate. Jasak Cooley: Good evening to you all watchers, listeners, and readers, and welcome to the Pacium Broadcasting Service's... Ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuumble in the toooooooooooooooooweeeeeeeeeer! Here's a bit of a background, the three men you see before you are Baikal Nars, leader of the libertarian-conservative United Citizen's Party of Atulke, Kors Belin, leader of the center-lef tLabor Party of Atulke, and Anton Slavio, leader of the far-left Communist Party of Atulke. After the election, the Minister President will be selected by the majority party to lead the Atul delegation to the Paciun parliament, and is also tasked with 'the defense of Atul culture' by the constitution. Now that's the basics! Let's ruuuuuuuuuu- Baikal Nars: Save some oxygen for all of us. (Audience laughs) Jasak Cooley: So, there's the matter of the economy. With sluggish growth and declining consumer confidence, people have begun to oppose the government of Baikal Nars. Can you defend your policy? Baikal Nars: Some people have criticized me for refusing stimulus for the economy. But I have seen the government intrude into people's economic matters before, and I am sure it didn't end well. Anton Slavio: Liar! Jasak Cooley: Calm down Slavio, you get your turn. Continue Mister President. Baikal Nars: I know stimulus activates an economy. But I do not want a people that relies on their government for anything other than law and defence. I do not want a culture that is a slave to unnecessary comfort. I want an Atulke that is free and self reliant. Jasak Cooley: Time. And your rebuttal Belin? Kors Belin: All things in the world are based on happy mediums. A bit of chocolate makes your life longer. Too much shortens it. The same goes with stimulus. I will stimulate the economy with three packages, each one decreasing in size and scope. And within the laws are conditions cutting unnecessary programs such as art subsidies. By the time the last package is passed, the economy should be well on its way to prosperity like we saw at the end of my term. Jasak Cooley: And finally, Slavio. Anton Slavio: The reason the economy has declined is not war, is not the loss of international trade, but the loss of the socialist market system! As Minister President, I shall bring the golden age back to Atulke in the form of the reborn and improved Atul Union! Soon, all men shall be equal and prosperous! Jasak Cooley: Well... time for the next question. Jasak Cooley: Well, here's an interesting one, foreign policy. Describe your foreign policy. We begin with you... Slavio. Anton Slavio: I shall lead the Atulke Republic into a referendum of secession from the Pacium Union, to form our own Atul Union under a perfect Communist system. Then afterwards, I shall establish Atul dominance over all of Datium, like the days of the Atul Horde! I shall unite all peoples under one flag, one economy, one faith! Jasak Cooley: Time. Mister President? Baikal Nars: Thank you. I should first of all note that our khanate's dominance over all Datium is only very theoretical and based on flimsy archaeological findings. Second of all, I shall expand our involvement in Paciun forces at large, and encourage recruiting. I shall push for us to intervene whenever possible to protect global liberty. All this can only be done with full integration. Jasak Cooley: Your turn, Belin. Kors Belin: Baikal, I think you're forgetting the fat lot of good intervening brought all of us! (Audience laughs) That said, I think the key to positive intervention lies not with brawn but with smarts. Look at the Agraean crisis for an example. Agraea was brutally attacked with no declaration of war, and it could have escalated to a Nysan conflagration. But with calls for diplomacy by all sides, we were able to rein both sides in and bring them to the table. I believe that joining the Paciun Union will only contribute postively to us. Jasak Cooley: Good! New round! Jasak Cooley: Well, this is the last round out of twenty for the night. This concerns something called uhm... how do you pronounce that word? Someone? (Shows cameraman index card) Cameraman: Gehy- gay marriage. Jasak Cooley: Ah yes that. And we begin... with Slavio. Anton Slavio: Gay people are only the result of exposure to capitalism and her bourgeois vices, and can be cured with enough time and electricity! I shall teach them how to renounce the corrupt vice for their own good! Socialism can not long exist if it tolerates vices like they did under you, Belin! And I should note I was endorsed by the leader of the Orthodox Salbanist Church! Jasak Cooley: Alright, time. Mister President? Baikal Nars: I cannot support the conjunction of religion and state. I will not grant the homosexuals of our nation marriage. But I should note I do not claim to understand it, nor should I believe the government pass judgement upon it. I believe that we should pass a civil union law. Kors Belin: Well, if you're going to give them the same rights as us heterosexuals, might as well call it the Gay Marriage Act. (Audience laughs) I think that the extra ink required to print those few extra letters would go against your austerity program though. (Audience laughs) In all seriousness, Atulke has accepted gay men and lesbian women for ages and even performed marriage rites, until Communism arrived. To discriminate against it would be un-conservative now, right Nars? (Audience laughs) Jasak Cooley: Whoo! One heck of a debate! And right on the forty five minute mark to boot! Time for closing statements! More News:

![]() Atulke Decides: LABOR WINS ![]() People wait in the streets for election results In what has been called the political triumph of the new century, Kors Belin has beat Baikal Nars at the polls by a wide margin, partially aided by the division of eldery votes between the United Citizen's Party and the Communist Party of Atulke. Belin's Labor has nabbed 56 seats, giving him an undisputed majority. The new leader of the United Citizen Party Zamar Lamorskov announced his good wishes for Labor, while urging for fiscal caution and common sense as the new session opens. The election was carried with a first-past-the-post system, which severely disadvantaged the Communists in their quest for a victory by popular vote. They only won a governorship in the island province of Han'ni, due to strong support by the natives living there as the party was the only one to mention them in their platform. The United Citizen's Party won 31 seats, and is now expected to be in the official opposition. Atulke is now faced with a fundamental question now that Belin is back as Minister President, was this election a victory for the nation? Belin's performance is trusted to carry the nation well into the future, but will Atulke be able to grow to as strong a nation as it was before the Civil War? More News:
