Melas is the grandson of the Lanlanian King Alfred I, who briefly rule as King of Tyras, and who both gives him his claim to the Tyrian throne and puts him in the secondary line of succession for the Lanlanian throne. Gaius I, Melas's father, was the illegitimate son of King Alfred and his mistress, Aliki. Is was only by a miracle that both Gaius and Aliki survived the royal purge following Alfred's coup d'etat by then Major General Deimonides. Neither Melas nor anybody else knew of his royal ties until 317 at the start of the Tyrric Civil War.
Gauis died only a year after giving birth to Melas. His mother shortly thereafter put him up for adoption, and he was adopted by Melas I (from whom he gets his name) and Evelina.
Melas's (adoptive) father was the director of Tyras's Military Academy, considered a prestigious institution for that was where the up-and-coming officers of the Tyrric Armed Forces receive their training. He was therefor submerged in a militaristic culture, and at 17 he began attending the Military Academy. Melas was poised to graduate top of his class in move into the officer corps, however, he was unfortunate to end up in the same class as Fanaitis, the grandson of the Tyrian dictator Deimonides. As Melas often puts it, "politics" got in the way of him ever graduating at all, and he ended up dropping out. It was more than just simple politics, though, as he went through constant intimidation and the eventual murder of his father to force him to drop out so that Fanaitis would graduate at the top. It was those events at the Academy that turned Melas's opinion sharply against the military and the regime.
Due to a continued grudge, Fanaitis had Melas imprisoned for trivial reasons in the notorious political prison Vathys Chezos in 317. He spent not even a year there before helping organize and leading a prisoner riot that, with outside help, was successful in taking control of the facility. Due to the notoriety of the prison and it being the first "victory" by pro-democratic forces in the civil war, the day of the riot became a national holiday. Melas's involvement and the coinciding revelation of his royal lineage catapulted him to the status of a national hero, and ultimately culminated in the new government deciding to crown him as King of Tyras.
Melas has spent most of the last four years in Halvadag, Lanlanian, attending university double majoring in International Affairs and Economics. As the title of King is not one he particularly wanted, it is his stated intention to leave as much governance as possible to the elected government. He has no heirs nor any direct siblings. He has a half brother and a half sister, neither of whom he has ever met, and both of which are not in the royal bloodline. |

Diogenes is the first elected president of Tyras, coming to office in the election one year in to the Tyrric Civil war in the territory occupied by democratic-aligned forces. He was previously appointed to be the Interim President by Admiral Osaphenes at the onset of the civil war, and Defense Minister before that under the Deimonides regime.
He is the oldest of five siblings in a family that lived on the seas, either as fisherman or navy servicemen. Diogenes chose the latter route, as at the time attempting to pursue a military career was the only way to advance in status. |
