Oracia. A world of opportunity and plenty. A new world in which we, the people, have built for ourselves over hundreds, even thousands of years. Civilization has come so far for us. In the last three decades, technology has revolutionized our homes, our workplaces, our transportation, and our very lives. Technology has taken the world by storm, and has become the charge towards the future to greater power and greater heights. However, those who put all their faith in technology alone are fools. Those that believe technology can be the end all to all possible dangers are fools.

If technology was so amazing, why then would Magic still be around? If technology could save us from everything, why would we need people knowledgeable in Magical Arts to defeat the beasts that lurk in the shadows, hidden from the naked eye? In fact, Magic is needed more than ever in this new era, as the beasts known as Oni have returned in greater strength. The Oni, once a major force in the world of instability that fell to a great hero lost to history, have started to return in greater numbers.

However, in an ironic twist of fate, it can be said that the new era of globalization and rapid technological growth has contributed in a resurgence to Magical Arts. Today, it is easier to find a potential Eximus halfway across the world than it was to find one in the same town half a century ago. In this new era of globalization, organizations have sprung up to combat the resurgence of the Oni. One has risen above all the others and has become the forefront in a new global war for control of Oracia.

They call themselves the EDO- the Eximus District Organization- or "the District" for short. It is currently the go to organization for all matters relating to Magic in the Modern Era. With a massive global bureaucracy, numerous Agents, and a large financial backing from private donors and international cooperation, it serves as the frontlines for a world slipping towards a fiery demise. Unlike other Magic organizations, the District has recognized the rise of a new wave of Oni that threaten the balance of the world. 10 years prior, they opened the Academy for the Eximus of the District (AED) to help build a new generation of Eximus in a changing and rapidly interconnected world.

Today, the AED stands as a cornerstone of education in the Magical Arts and a pillar in the new order that exists. Through the Academy, Magic and technology have become more intertwined, as up and coming Eximus use new technology to further extend their Magical abilities.

But, not all have taken kindly to this new resonance between the two sides. And with great power comes great responsibility... and possible insanity.

General FAQ
Q1: What is this concept exactly?
A1: Insanity's Edge is an RP set in the modern world in Oracia, where "fictional folklore" of supernatural beings (known as Oni) and magic are actually scriptures of fact and reality. To the normal human, these beings do not exist and are only seen when their aura becomes visible. However, a select few can see these beings, even when the auras of Oni are not visible to the regular human eye. These people are known collectively as "Eximus". These people have existed from the dawn of history, fighting against these Oni that attempt to create havoc and destruction in our world. Slowly, they found others like themselves and began to work in pairs, triplets, or larger teams. They worked together to fight the Oni and as a result, have become effective at keeping the peace. In September 320, the beginning of this RP, we see the rise of students through the ranks of the Academy as they prepare for their lives to transform, for better or for worse.

Q2: Are you crazy?
A2: Yes. Next question please.

Q3: Are all Eximus part of the ED?
A3: Actually, no. Some Eximus have taken the side of the Oni and actively fight to cause chaos. Yes, that is a choice you can make... but it puts you at odds with a global organization that has many members. Not only that, but there are smaller organizations and teams that work independently of the District. In fact, nations may have their own Eximus Teams that the characters of this RP may come across.

Q4: When and where does this story take place?
A4: It takes place in the Academy which will be located in central Ikarius due to its historical location as a place for well, a lot of Oni activity. In other words, front lines is fun stuff. This begins September 3, 320, the first day of the new Academy semester.

Q5: Why is it called Insanity's Edge?
A5: Aha. Finally, the golden question. Insanity is the tradeoff that Eximus must give for their power. When their powers are in active use, insanity starts to build within them. If their power is used for too long, they reach a point called "Insanity's Edge". At that point, one of three things can happen:

  • The Eximus enters a frenzied state where they can't distinguish friend from foe, and will only come out of this state after a certain period of rampage;
  • The Eximus' power stops working, and they more or less collapse;
  • If the case is truly severe... the Eximus may turn into an Oni.

There are rumors of a very rare fourth outcome if the conditions are just right in which great power can be found... but these rumors remain unfounded. Perhaps if you get to a certain Tier, you could change that (see the new section on Tiers below). The main point is that the stronger the power, the more insanity created.

Q6: What is the age range of these characters?
A6: Please stick in a 16-24 range. Note, any characters 16 or 17 may not do solo missions and anyone over 24 should have technically graduated from the Academy.

Q6: Can I apply as an Oni?
A6: No. If you have a special request for an Oni, feel free to ask me or Blac, my co-OP. However, we do not want any Oni Characters. [1]

Q7: Who's in charge?
A7: I am. However, Blacaria is my Co-OP, so you can ask him things too.

Q8: My question isn't here... but it's a good one!

FAQ: Magic and Tiers
Q1: I WANT ALL THE SPE-
A1: NOT A QUESTION AND NOT COOL.

Q2: I wanna be a robo-
A2: Make your own RP on robots then.

Q3: So how many Magic powers can my character(s) have?
A3: It is generally the case that you begin with only one type of Magic Art. For example, your character would be able to control one elemental thing (fire, water, earth, air, um... whatever's left?) rather than act like the damn Avatar. Also note that most likely, you will start weak unless you have participated in a prior Insanity's Edge RP. [2]

Q4: Okay... so how does my character become the very best?
A4: Killing all others is a good start (though you'll probably die). Or you can go with the easier alternative of going through Tiers.

Tiers is the new system in Insanity's Edge designed to solve a major flaw that occurred in prior attempts at Insanity's Edge. In the past, there was no limit on how much power someone started out with. In prior attempts at this on and off this forum, I recognized this was a problem and thanks to some thinking, Blacaria and I have decided to adopt this system. Your character begins at Tier 1 for Unique Magic (see below) and Tier 2 for Generic Magic. [3] As your character develops and fights further, he/she will upgrade in Tiers, giving them more Magical energy and a greater selection of attacks.

Q5: Is there a limit to Tiers?
A5: Yes. Once a Character reaches Tier 6, they will undergo "Diversification", where their powers become more complex. Let's take an example:
  • Character "Bob" uses Fire Magic. Bob reaches Tier 6 and in an epic battle, he finds himself losing and at Insanity's Edge. Suddenly, he snaps and uses white fire upon a particularly nasty Oni, killing in in epic gloriousness. Bob just diversified and now has the ability to use White Fire.


This links back to Insanity's Edge. When a Character reaches Tier 6, they must go over the edge to diversify. That means, milk an epic scene for all its worth and let your best writing shine through. Upon completion of diversification, the Character begins at Tier 1 for that new type of Magic.

Q6: Can I learn different Magic in the process?
A6: Ask me later when we're more in the game.

Q7: What is Generic Magic and what is Unique Magic?
A7: Generic Magic is Magic that isn't as difficult to learn. Many Eximus have the same type of Magic. Fire, Water, Earth, Air, and Weapons Requipment of both Melee and Ranged Variety are all forms of Generic Magic.

Unique Magic is a type of magic more difficult to learn due to a lack of people that have firsthand knowledge of such Magic. For example, Auric Magic and Soul Magic are very difficult to learn and take longer to upgrade in Tiers. In exchange, advanced forms of Unique Magic are more powerful. That, and you can talk about how amazeballs and different your character is. Note it is possible to start from Generic Magic and then diversify into Unique Magic. In fact, it might give you a headstart.

In the application, I will inform you of whether you have picked a Generic or Unique Magic once you have filled out the application.

Q8: Is there a list of all these types of Magics?
A8: Yes; it is at the bottom of this post. There is also Illegal Magic (ICly banned but can be performed if you're stupid enough to pursue it) and Banned Magic (as in, Blacaria and I don't want to see it or you will not survive).

Q9: For special abilities, I don't know what to do... can you help?
A9: A special ability is an ability that few Eximus posses. This can be either passive or active. Passive special abilities will often increase a Eximus' performance in battle or their senses. Some examples include increased accuracy, sense Oni from far away, or sense danger coming close. Active special abilities are those that can be used as an attack or as a defense. Examples would be a large force field for a limited time, a blast of aura power, or basically resonating with an Oni's aura and using it against them. You may start with one active and one passive special ability. As the RP goes on, your character may learn more and develop upon them further.

Q10: Err... I still don't fully understand. Can you explain how to make a special ability?
A10: You come to talk to me about it. In fact, when you upgrade a Tier, it's best to talk to me so I can get a feel of what you're aiming towards for your character.

FAQ: Doing Things in Game
Q1: So what do I do?
A1: Don't ask me that question. It's an Academy as well, so try not being a total ditz. If you're really stuck, try not having to fight everything.

Q2: Even though I'm a student in this RP, I want to do a job. How can I?
A2. Great question! You can and will do jobs because jobs are fun and ICly give you monies that you can use to actually live on campus and go to the Academy. There is something called the "Jobs Board" on the District's website and in the District's Main Office (somewhere near the center of the campus). You can apply for jobs there. Please note that 16 and 17 year olds will be unable to perform solo missions, so choose wisely.

Q3: Can I form a duo, trio, or foursome with people?
A3: Yes, yes, and as long as it isn't explicit sex. Team building is part of this RP and it is STRONGLY encouraged, because it's more fun killing things with friends! Mind, you'll have to split the money- yes, students get money from doing jobs- but you get a unique advantage, which is explained in the next few questions.

Q4: What jobs can I do? What is available?
A4: There is a Ranking system for all Jobs and for who can pick up what jobs. See the spoiler.
A Nifty Table Thing

You will receive your Student Ranking when your application is accepted. You will be informed of any promotions to your character's Student Ranking ICly and via PM. Yes, I added X. Yes it may or may not come up. Also note that when a mission is taken, you will create a separate RP thread for it titled something. Make sure to add "Insanity's Edge Operation" in the Topic Description.

Q5: My character is Rank 2 but I wanna go on a Rank 3 mission. What do I do?
A5: Fresh shit out of luck. Oh wait. That's only if you actually have no friends. If your character has a friend or teammate that is Rank 3, they can take anyone they want with them. Same goes for all missions up to S and X Class. At S Class, all party members must be at least Rank 4 and there must be at least one Rank 5. At X Class... well, it's shut off at this point in time.

Q6: What if none of us are at the required rank?
A6: Fret not. You have three options. Your character and your party can work to get to the required rank, but the fact you asked this question means you want an easier route. The party can also try and take the job anyways. However, getting found out means you lost HALF the reward instantly. Failing the mission puts you in a shit ton of trouble.

Your best option if you really don't wanna wait is pray for something to happen in the World. At times, Oni may rush all corners of the world, overwhelming all Eximus. As a result, the Academy may suspend the rules on Rankings and taking Jobs so as to halt the tide of Oni or restore balance.

Q7: Will there be special requests for my character and their party?
A7: If they work hard enough, maybe. There could be requests from a private citizen, a government, the Academy Headmaster... or if your character truly proves they have the guts to take on the world, perhaps the District Council itself.

Q8: What is the timing on this RP?
A8: On the main thread, I am looking at 1 IC day for every 2 or 3 OOC days It depends on the flow of the story. In operations threads, go at your own pace, but try to complete the operation. Note, if you get bored, try taking on a job from the Jobs Board.

Personality: When you first meet her Asuna will be the most self centered, arrogant jerk imaginable. Though as you get to know her you get to know she is one of the most caring and sweet people on Earth who is extremely sensitive even though she seems extremely tough on the outside.

Bio (1-3 paragraphs):
Asuna was born on the unfortunate day of December 16th, 302 the day known as the anniversary of the first Peren Games before they were moved back six months two years ago in the State of Perentium. As such she grew up in Region Twelve, the worst off region in the nation and the most northernmost. Early in her life Asuna could see the Oni around her small village though everyone just thought it was just a young child wanting attention. This resentment from others lead Asuna to become a loner by age six. Then one night an EDO raid saved her from her life in Perentium, the EDO was known to do raids in Perentium to save Eximus but they always targeted older children, Asuna was the first case of anyone under ten being rescued. No one except in the mission operatives and high ups in the EDO know why she was alone rescued and at her age as well.

Asuna was then adopted by Carlos Vestoz who was the commanding officer on the mission which rescued her after soon arriving at the EDO. Asuna soon learned to read, write and how to kill someone with a dull knife by age seven. She took melee weapons classes by age nine and on one day while wanting to get a certain sword from a shelf way too high managed to activate her Requip Magic for the first time by summoning a sword just like it. She later then learned by her adoptive father about her magic and trained more.

After turning sixteen Asuna managed to convince her father to let her go to the academy where she currently is now. So far she has done eight semesters and has yet to gain any serious friend. Her first attempt ended with her roommate having multiple lacerations across her chest from sword fun. So she resides in special single rooms.( More darker History to come later)

Former Training: Basic hand to hand combat, as well as throwing knife and sword wielding. His background as a thief gives him some stealth experience and the ability to break locks, given the proper tools.

Active Special Ability: Storm of Blades - Seth's ability is to conjure up a vortex of energy, which can lift and levitate metallic objects. When used in combination with Requipping, this becomes a lethal ability, as he can conjure up a literal whirlwind of knives, daggers, or anything with a blade on it, which can deal out massive amounts of damage to opponents too careless to dodge out of the way.
Passive Special Ability: Heightened State of Awareness - Seth's keen senses are sharper than those of ordinary humans. This allows him to have a greater situational awareness and perceive a threat from a greater distance, than a normal human, or orient himself better in dim-light conditions.
Personality: Seth is an unpredictable individual at the best of times. He has difficulty integrating into a group and usually tends to stand out as rebellious, impulsive and aggressive towards other people. These are traits that have led to him being shunned by people, which suits him just fine, as he prefers to work alone, without others to hinder him. In combat, he can be cold and calculated, tending to ambush his targets, however, if his nerves are pushed over the edge, he tends to become extremely reckless.
Bio (1-3 paragraphs): Seth comes from amongst those elements of Carpathian society, whom live at the edge between life and death, constantly pursued by the authorities and facing the grip prospect of harsh penalty, in the merciless Carpathian Penal system. Born in a family of 4, to a Carpathian father and Monrovian mother, he was raised to a life of thievery and crime by his father, who was a member of an Outlaw gang. As is usually the case with criminals in Carpathia, Seth's father died in a confrontation with a rival gang and Seth ended up doing time in jail for Burglary and Assault.

He was to be imprisoned for ten years, until it was discovered that he has Eximus abilities. In the end, it came down to the District intervening and cutting a deal with the Carpathian government, which resulted in Seth's release. Part of the deal that the District made with the Carpathian government, was that if he ever stepped over the line, he would be deported back to the Allied States for imprisonment and due to this, he is constantly seeking to shake that collar from around his neck. His desire for recognition, leads him to take risks, despite his untrained abilities.

Active Special Ability: Shadow Beam- Fires a beam of shadow energy in various shapes....
Passive Special Ability: Shadow Spill- The stronger emotion Hyeon had towards a person the more his insanity will spill into them

Personality: He is a social person by normal people standards but often doesn't understand various parts of society. He is fairly difficult to anger, and is just usually trying to fun. He is often conflicted by which side he is on in the war and as such tends to breakdown in conflicting situations.
Bio (1-3 paragraphs): Most of Hyeon's life is kept in absolute history, this mainly stems from the fact of how he was created. Hyeon was created in a governmental laboratory in the United Sapien Empire. The lab at the time was one of the few places the government of the USR would allow Oni research, which is publicly(Towards other governments) called myth and legend but secretly would test on Oni. This lab known as Research Laboratory 657 or RL657 decided to create a possible weapon against the Oni though it involved unethical genetics research. The RL657 decided to fertilize a human egg and then genetically modify the future child to be infused with Oni DNA....the experiment was known as Dead life. The EDO caught wind of the experiment and did a blac ops raid on the lab after the child was born. Everyone who worked at the lab was killed except for the child who was kept alive due to.....the EDO basically feeling sorry for it, but the EDO would always have someone watching the kid if need be to end it permanently.

After he was taken by the EDO to a facility of their own, Hyeon was placed into a permanent isolation of sorts, never going outside, never talking to people except for the rare morning greetings by the guards. As such he craved human interaction, and sometimes would get in trouble on purpose by hitting against the doors so that the guards would at least speak to him. Later in life the EDO relaxed restrictions on Hyeon but still called his experiment number 06. It wasn't until the day he was let outside for the first time that a guard gave him a book of names to choose from.....the guard was later fired over the incident, since he also taught Hyeon to read and write as well. This was one of the first times Hyeon got angry and was the first time he used his magic abilities by firing on the head guard and a few others after hearing about the firing. He was fifteen at the time and was almost killed over the incident, but a council member who was visiting allowed Hyeon to live on the condition he went to the academy and learn to hone his powers.

After this announcement, Hyeon was taught all he was suppose to know by age 16 about science, math, etc. Though a majority of the guards still their distance from Hyeon. After getting in trouble and a few clerical errors later he was forced to go to school late, over this he is worried since the EDO promised they would assign a student to watch him 24/7 and that this student could kill him at any time they wanted if they so felt.

I'm not entirely keen on the passive ability. Do you mind explaining why this would be passive, since he has to choose to activate it or not?

Personality : Ruby Rose is a fun loving character who likes to goof around but is also concious of herself. Her parents were killed by Oni when she was 5, nearly taking her life before she was saved by her uncle Crow, who took her under his wing to teach her a Sylv traditional weapon -- the scythe -- as was tradition for the Eximus in Sylvar, she built her own scythe -- Crescent Rose -- as a coming of age test under the watchful eye of her Uncle Crow to finally graduate from Signal Academy in Ravenne. Now knowing most of the tools needed, her Uncle is sending her to the Academy, to continue the work her parents did and perhaps find a place for herself. She also seeks to find her sister, Yang, who was separated from her on the fateful night of the Oni attack.

Ruby is a self-proclaimed dork when it comes to weapons; however, she is quite intelligent, having designed and built Crescent Rose during her time at Signal; although she admits to going "a little overboard" with it's design. She feels that seeing new weapons "is like meeting new people, but better." She relies on Crescent Rose quite often in battle, which implies that her weapon is the source of her confidence in battle.

Ruby has a strong sense of moral justice, a trait she got from stories about heroes and monsters that her sister used to read for her as well as the way her parents raised her. These stories are what gave her the ideals that she wished to live by and uphold throughout her life, and are the reason for her love for books. Because she is shown to be childish even when in class, she tends to study by herself to cover the necessary knowledge.

Biography
Titus Hathaway is the perfect offspring of a crazy/paranoid Lanlanian count. Since childhood, he's been trained in a variety necessary survival skills, including combat, ropework, forest survival, urban survival, and how to associate with poor people--including, how to handle an encounter with a hobo.

Of course, as any young child, he abhorred having his schedule full of such ridiculous things and came to resent his crazy father. Consequently, when his powers suddenly manifested when he 15, he was more than happy to be whisked away to the school in the Pacium Union.

Since then, he's trained to improve his powers and stuff and things or something or other. He's also taken up the more leisurely things in life--like baking, and cooking, and guitar and skateboarding and and and and stuff, you know?

Active Special Ability: Summoning: Tavius can with a large amount of effort summon an elemental spirit in the form of a lumbering tree-like humanoid made of plants, standing 5ft tall. While slow, the brute force it can wield can make it useful to distract an enemy while he escapes a battle.
Passive Special Ability: Nature's affinity: When surrounded by nature and plant life, Tavius's insanity is slowly drained.

Personality: To be developed in the RP.
Bio: Tavius was raised in one of the countries many monasteries, like many male children of the peasantry in Dahlkive whose parents can't care for them. He was inducted into a cult of warriorhood at 13, with the aim of becoming one of the armies elite commandos, and trained his entire life for a supposed 'noble cause' of defending the people of the nation.

However around fourteen his powers began to surface - just slowly. At first it was little things; when it was his turn to tend the gardens, things grew just a bit faster and looked just a bit more vibrant. But it began to get stronger as he got older, and when a rogue criminal gang attempted to ransack the secluded monastery, he accidentally killed several of them when his powers went wild - crushing them under a tree.

He was sent to the Dahlkivish Minister of Magik to be trained for several years before being sent onto the Academy in Ikarius as one of their best candidates.

Anyways, I have worked out a system for new threads with each operation. Basically, it goes like this:

When you start a thread, the Topic Title is some kickass name followed by [OPEN]. The topic description is the name of the Operation and the Mission Level. When the mission is complete, the [OPEN] in the title will be replaced by [SUCCESS] or [FAILURE] depending on whether you've succeeded in your primary objectives or not.

So, an open mission would look like this:
