Shameless repaste from my regional board. If some things don't match up to things going on here, that's why. And I am too lazy to edit those things out when it's still all a fairly good source of information. Alright, so, Future Tech. We know what this is, or at I hope that's the case. Under my control, FT will be a good roleplaying environment. Good, in this case, being a realistic and well maintained forum. Now I am sure some of you are thinking 'Realism? In my Future Tech?'. Well I promise you that it's more likely than you think. There are only barely negotiable, because these are rules that will always be followed regardless of technological capability. These are things that just won't work because they are so farfetched or out of touch with reality. Please follow these rules or I will bring the issue up. 1.) There is no stealth is space. This is first and foremost because the people that watch shows like Star Trek and think "oh hey cloaking! I want this!" If you want it, you can't have it. Simple as that. The reason is because no one ever plays cloaking right. The only right way, and even this isn't allowed because it can be abused, was the way Mass Effect did it. Heat sinks and such kept the ship invisible to sensors, but they were not invisible, and it was not a limitless ability. Again, no stealth because it can (and will) be abused. 2.) There is no (traditional) MAD in space. Quite simple yes? The reason for this is because nuclear weapons are no longer that big threat to a state. States won't be destroyed in one massive, widespread blow because it's nearly impossible. Notice how I have traditional there? Let me explain. Nuclear weapons aren't a threat, but what's a very common threat to a planet? Asteroids. Strap some rockets and/or a jump core to an asteroid, set destination for enemy world, slam it into a planet. Mass extinctions are likely and the planet would be devastated. This is as close as one can come to MAD in space. 3.) Even with advanced technology, nothing is invincible or highly resistant to everything. With every race, there's always going to be a glaring weakness or several. To use my own races for the Anean Star Empire as examples, the Geminorians are highly advanced and have developed defenses against the weapons of their enemies, but their glaring weakness is a particular vulnerability to radiation, heat, and kinetics (simply from being a "soft" race). On the other hand, the Vervortians are a hardy, large, and strong race, but it's that size that makes them an easy target for smaller and faster targets. Get it? It's all about balance. Nothing is the best at everything. 4.) Technological disadvantages and advantages, as well as the military ones, must be played properly. For many people, playing their advantages is easy, but it's the disadvantages that people have trouble with. For newer players, they don't want to lose, so they'll ignore the disadvantages or even outright godmode just to win. The latter I am on the lookout for anyway, but the former can slip by. Just please remember to play your disadvantages at all times. They're not there to fill out a form, they're there to make your nation as it should be and balance you out. 5.) For the love of god cut down on the super ships. Seriously, it's getting out of hand. Bigger is not always better. The bigger the ship, the less likely it is to hit anything smaller than it. Let's use my ships for example. The Interdictor Class Frigate is just under 700 feet long. I have seen people do frigates 11 kilometers long. Holy fuck what are people smoking, because I want some of it. Again, bigger is not always better. Scale ships down and leave the bigger ships as your capital ships where the size is the exception rather than the norm. 6.) Try to add numbers to posts. You might know the sizes you have for things, but we don't. Introducing a new ship? Tell us how big it is. Introducing a character? Give us a height and weight to better get an idea of what we're dealing with. Add a number to everything at least once in a thread just so we are aware. It helps keep everyone on the same page. I am guilty of not doing it all the time, and I intend to fix that, but I want to see everyone doing it so we can imagine all of our ships and characters and such as they should be. 7.) Lose with grace. What this means is, if you're going to lose, accept it and go down in a proper way. Don't asspull tech or some kind of super gadget that gets your character, characters, or group out of trouble. This isn't Star Trek or Star Wars where the main characters can never die and this isn't a comic book where your heroes get resurrected when sales start to slump. Even your main characters, including heads of state, should be expected to die at some point be it in roleplay or outside of roleplay from age or something. Everyone is expendable, no exceptions. 8.) Have fun. That's what this boils down to. I am a bit stringent on these rules because I want to have a good FT forum where we're not bogged down in unrealistic roleplay and poor performance. FT is always viewed as being a techwank era, so I want to cut down the techwank by hitting it before it occurs. Edited by Luca, Sep 6 2013, 04:04 AM.
