Tristram, Caldeum elected Gamma Cities in Oracia, Byzantium elected Beta City

TRISTRAM - Three U.S. cities are being recognized as major cities on Oracia.

The cities of Tristram, Caldeum and Byzantium all earned high marks from the International Committee of Oracian Recors (ICOR for short) due to their sizes and importance in the Syntrael Region.

Tristram, the national capital and Caldeum were chosen as "Gamma Cities". These cities, according to the ICOR, are usually cities that are the largest in their country. Caldeum is the second largest city in the United States and is the best educational city in the country. Many local officials in Caldeum were not surprised that their city received such a high honor. Tristram, on the other hand, as the capital of the United States, was ranked comparatively low. The Federal Capital was ranked one spot above Caldeum, despite the prominence Tristram enjoys in U.S. culture. City officials became even more determined to draw even greater worldwide appeal to the city in the coming years.

Byzantium, the largest city in the United States, received a "Beta City" rating. According to the ICOR, beta cities are typically called "regional capitals". With dozens of financial and corporate headquarters dotting Byzantium, it came at no surprise to city officials that the city once called "the heart and soul of the United States" received such praise.

President Anakin Cain called the results "promising of the rising influence and power of the United States of Nova Angleterre around the world."

Presidency issues cautious response to Mestran news

by: George Stormwell - TRISTRAM - The Presidency issued a statement regarding the rapid change in governance in the Mestran Imperium. It was overall a very cautious statement but a firm one, one that reassures the belief that for there to be any real truth behind the reforms, they must be carried out with due diligence.

In the statement penned by President Leonard Briscoe, the United States looks on "with an air of caution but firm belief that Mestra's best days have yet to come." Briscoe also said, "Though these democratic reforms are great news to hear to Syntreal's only true democracy, it is the opinion of the United States that we remain cautious in the hopes that the reforms take firm hold and that Mestra will one day be able to walk the same Path of Democracy that the United States has for so many years." Pointing to Mestra's continuing imperialist nature, President Briscoe states for the record that he worries that democracy will continue to be undermined as long as Mestra continues on its campaigns of expansion throughout the Syntreal realm. "I personally think that the democratic future of Mestra rests on the fact that it may never fully be realized if the Mestrans persist in their imperialist ambitions. Such ambitions only further fuel the fires burning for monarchy and imperial power."

Rumors have been floating that the new interim Prime Minister of the Mestran Imperium is expected to meet with President Briscoe sometime before the November elections, in which Briscoe goes one-on-one with former President William Regal

DECISION 326
Regal, Briscoe officially nominated for President; general election battle heating up

by: William Brighton - The national gathering of the Republican and Democratic parties made it official. It will be Democrat former U.S. president William Regal squaring off with Republican incumbent president Leonard Briscoe for the Presidency of the United States of Angiris.

Briscoe was renominated unanimously by the Republican Party, by a vote of 996 to 0. He was then nominated as the candidate of the Libertarian Party, winning 669 votes over his only competitor in the Libertarian race, Representative Sean Gibbons (L-Xiansai 5), who won 404 votes. Regal was nominated by the Democratic Party by a vote of 1,533 to 928 for Senate Majority Leader Christopher Witt (D-Virginia). Regal also was nominated by the Progressive Party unanimously. The Centrist Party has not nominated a candidate as of the writing of this article.

The fact that Regal faced a inter-party challenge, though unexpected, to his eventual nomination could actually spell trouble for him going forward. The Regal camp could not have expected that at all, especially not from the left wing of the Democratic Party. For his part, Senator Witt did not officially make himself a candidate for the nomination and tried to back off liberal elements within the party from voting for him instead of Regal.

Regardless of that, Regal holds the lead over President Briscoe, 45% to 44%. With such a tick-tight race between these gentlemen, it appears that Centrists and independents will determine the winner of this presidential contest.

Mestran Empire dissolved; Angirisian government continuing to watch with caution

by: George Stormwell - The Mestran Empire as we know it is dead. In its place stands a democratic Mestra.

The new Mestran Constitution was signed by Emperor Nicholas as the new Mestran Federation was proclaimed. In a speech in front of the new Parliament, Nicholas said, "Today marks the dawn of a new birth for our glorious nation. For far to long have we as a nation been crippled by our form of government which has hindered the creative thinking of our citizens. As we step forward into this new dawn, we must come to accept and respect our past and make every effort to retain our culture as we are. My family has reigned over this nation since is birth, and throughout that time we have led you through troubled times. While my family has not always held the peoples interest in the best of regards, I hope that today you will remember my family as being just and as dedicated and loyal to the Empire. As the last of my line to reign over the Mestran Imperium I have the greatest honor to announce to all the world that the 25th of September shall be known as Federation Day for it is upon this day that I sign this constitution and formally establish the Mestran Federation."[1]

The State Department released a statement penned by Secretary of State Stephanie McMahon saying, "The new Constitution of Mestra opens a new era of Mestran history and opens more opportunities for co-operation between Angiris and Mestra." However, the United States continues to operate its policy on Mestra as "cautious friendship". With the elections for President coming up soon, though, it remains to be seen how this policy would change if President Leonard Briscoe retains the high office or if William Regal captures the presidency.

President Briscoe also extended his congratulations to Markus Salrio, the newly elected prime minister of Mestra. An excerpt of his note reads: "Your ascension to power in our eastern neighbor is a testament to the power of democracy in our realm."

Tristram continues to watch events occurring in I'balan with caution, and the democratic partnerships that could emerge from these events are many.

Aurentina-Carpathia crisis draws comment from Secretary of State McMahon

by: Tim Sikorsky - Another crisis in Nysa has caused concern for the United States of Angiris, as the Allied States of Carpathia and Moldova and the Democratic Republic of Aurentina have begun a war of words that runs the economic and political gambit.

It began when the newly elected government of Aurentina began putting into practice tax reforms that sought lower income taxes, which opponents claimed would begin income inequality. Shortly thereafter, A.S.C.M. Dictator Kainan Wolfe lambasted the laws, claiming that the acts were "undemocratic" and "oppressive", even going so far as to say it was "almost totalitarian". The Carpathian Foreign Ministry then changed visa prices, lowering them for poorer Aurentinians and dramatically increasing prices (by 300% to be precise) on income earners of over 50,000 ASL (roughly (S)122,500). The taxes were lowered to as much as 200 ASL (or (S)1,050) for the poor and over 300,000 ASL (or (S)550,000) for richer citizens. The Ministry claimed they were doing this in support of the "oppressed working class of Aurentina" in hopes of encouraging immigration.

The Aurentinians were infuriated by this news, but polls in Aurentina seemed to back their Prime Minister, Harold Hawthorne, who said Mr. Wolfe had "no right to bully the people of Aurentina for democratically electing the Conservatives." But the Aurentinian response did little to debate the issue at heart: income inequality.

During a press conference at the State Department, Secretary of State Stephanie McMahon made some remarks about the crisis, saying, "First of all, the Aurentinians have the right to create what laws they wish. It doesn't matter how we feel about it, it is a domestic issue for them. Who are we to say anything in criticism about it from all the way across the world in Tristram where our word means nothing to them anyway?" Ms. McMahon then took aim at Kainan Wolfe himself, who was at one time slammed by President Leonard Briscoe during the Abere hostage crisis. "Mr. Wolfe is the last person to be criticizing anyone over 'oppressive' or 'undemocratic' actions considering what sort of government he runs over in Carpathia. I mean, come on, his title says it all: Dictator. Hello?" Ms. McMahon said to a roar of approval from the audience.

It is likely that the President's House will be commenting on the situation soon. President-elect William Regal also is expected to comment.

Briscoe, Regal respond to Carpathian attacks on McMahon, Angiris

by: Leo Thatcher - President Leonard Briscoe and President-elect William Regal both came into the new conflict arising between the United States and the Allied States of Carpathia and Moldova, following scathing but yet unhinged assaults upon the latter, particularly its Dictator Kainan Wolfe, by U.S. Secretary of State Stephanie McMahon. Mrs. McMahon made such remarks in criticism of the Allied States' attacks upon tax policies of the Democratic Republic of Aurentina and the subsequent response to that involved tax hikes on Carpathian visas.

President Briscoe was the first to respond, obviously angered that his Secretary of State had not only jumped the gun, but now was being mercilessly assaulted in foreign press. "I advise the Carpathian Foreign Minister to watch his words when calling Stephanie McMahon a laughing stock. His Foreign Ministry does not have that great a record either." he said, clearly referring to a recent diplomatic hubbub involving Carpathia. He then proceeded to apologize to Kainan Wolfe, saying, "It wasn't right for her to say that about Mr. Wolfe. The word "dictator" is a very sensitive word in this country, and it gives a false impression at times."

Mr. Briscoe then went on to counter Carpathian Foreign Minister Nicholae Ceausescu, who said that the United States had, for the second time, come after Carpathia with overexaggerated claims. "There is some merit to this, he must understand, " said the President, "It really is not proper to antagonize another country simply because you don't agree with its tax policies. It's one thing if it's a human rights issue that has effects on international powers, it's another when its a domestic tax policy which has no effect on international powers." Mr. Briscoe went on to say, "There is no evidence that it has had any adverse effects on Aurentina's populace, who actually seem to be in favor of such laws in the first place." Mr. Briscoe then announced that Secretary McMahon was going to be suspended for ten days for her misstep, citing reasons such as causing an international incident involving the United States.

President-elect William Regal, from his offices in Southpool, Hampshire, also chimed in. He took aim at Mr. Ceausescu, who questioned Angiris's democratic underpinnings. "I don't care if he asked Mrs. McMahon or not, but I will answer his questions. The answer to all three is YES. Emphatically YES. If Mrs. McMahon was wrong in her comments, then Mr. Ceausescu is equally as wrong for his comments about our democracy. He shouldn't have stooped to such a low. In fact, I would have been trying to appear above such silliness."

President Regal releases statement outlining foreign policy stance

by: Leo Thatcher - President William Regal has focused primarily for the first month of his fourth administration getting his Advisory Council put together and his system of governing - which worked wonders in his first three terms - in place before tackling the issues. He has first put a focus on foreign affairs, believing that if he could score victories on the global front, it would only prove good omens for the domestic economy and the U.S. reputation around the world.

Regal set his goals in multiple fronts, such as:

1. Continue the work President Leonard Briscoe made on repairing relations with Mestra - President Regal began by confirming what most in his inner circle already knew: he was going to continue building on the progress made by President Briscoe in repairing tense relations with the Mestran Federation, which were allowed to fall into disrepair during the latter days of Anakin Cain's presidency and were somewhat heightened during Briscoe's reign. President Regal wrote, "To continue on this path of reconciliation is good for our country, for our region, and ultimately the world." Regal did not explicitly rule out Angirisian entry into the Syntraelite Alliance, but did say, "The account of our country joining an organization of any kind is not of any importance at present. We have nothing really to gain from it."

2. Engage the Lanlanians/Commonwealth of Nations in diplomacy - The President touched on the rather tense notion of the "untrustworthy" Holy Lanlanian Empire in his paper, writing, "Some in our government view the Lanlanian Empire as a [...] antagonistic power in Zaroca. My view is that there is no proof of such, and simple bilateral engagement is the best remedy for this trouble." President Regal affirmed that the United States had absolutely zero interest in any dealing with the Commonwealth of Nations as a whole, but rather dealing with its member nations accordingly. "We feel that negotiated agreements with the Commonwealth as a conglomerated entity is not within in our best interests, but rather dealing with each member separately is." the President wrote.

3. Find new Nysan allies - The President, while placing Falsea in high regard for standing by the United States, wrote that it was his belief that the United States needed other Nysan allies to balance any possible progress with more right-leaning countries. "Considering much of Nysa's great powers are of the left wing of the political spectrum, I believe branching out to other Nysan countries would counter-balance our dealings with more centrist and right-leaning Caprecian nations in the long run. Thus, this will ensure our nation's role as a focal point of neutrality in the world at large."

President Regal makes statement about revelations of genocide in Canary

by: Maxwell Myers - Recent revelations of genocide having been perpetrated by the City of Kingborough and the People's Republic of Falsea, as reported on by the Isonia Inquiry (out of the Arrese Imperium) several weeks prior, have reverberated around the world in shock and dismay at such atrocities.

An independent study into the matter has been conducted in a joint venture by the State Department and by the House Investigative Committee and found the information given to the Isonia Inquiry to be "likely to be true with some possible exaggeration of precise detail". President William Regal was given the preliminary results of the study and stated that he was going to wait on the final results before making concrete decisions. He did however criticize both perpetrating parties, particularly Falsea who is seen as the United States' strongest ally at present. "We earnestly condemn the City of Kingborough and the People's Republic of Falsea for their complicity in this awful and atrocious act against the people of Canary [...] the actions of our greatest ally, the People's Republic of Falsea, greatly disturb me and the rest of the Angirisian people. Any further revelations of atrocities committed by Falsea will cause our government to re-evaluate our partnership. We will not call a nation an ally if we know they are capable of such viciousness."

Speaker of the House Robert Carter (C-Westmarch) said at a press conference at Westmarch City, "These revelations are greatly disturbing and the President's words today reflect shock and anger at this. We urge the President and his administration to take aggressive punitive actions where available to show our displeasure."

Though it is unclear what actions could be taken against the City of Kingborough, the President does have the option to call upon Congress to annul the Angiris-Falsea Agreement on Common Interests signed in 321 by U.S. President Anakin Cain and Falsean President Louise Rourke.

President William Regal reportedly to send correspondence to Carpathia's Wolfe
President William Regal (left) is apparently reaching out to the Allied States of Carpathia and Moldova's Dictator, Mr. Kainan Wolfe (right)
by: Maxwell Myers - It is obvious the rhetoric has changed.

Reportedly, over the objections of Secretary of State Stephanie McMahon, President William Regal is believed to be preparing official U.S. correspondence for transmission to the Allied States of Carpathia and Moldova, more specifically to it's Dictator, Mr. Kainan Wolfe. It is believed to be an invitation to Mr. Wolfe to summit with President Regal at a time, date and place of Mr. Wolfe's choosing. Recently, Mr. Wolfe and his government had been sparring over a wide array of issues with former President Leonard Briscoe and his administration, most recently over Carpathian criticism over tax policies in Aurentina and subsequent Angirisian attacks on Mr. Wolfe personally and his country. Mr. Wolfe and his Foreign Minister, Mr. Nicolae Ceausescu, lashed back at the President and Secretary McMahon, who instigated the war of words.

Now, with a new President at the helm in Tristram, it is believed that the olive branch is going to be extended. Clearly President Regal does not want to continue antagonism against Carpathia and possibly make an enemy out of them. That would complicate relations with the People's Republic of Falsea, who are also allies with the Allied States in the Trilateral Alliance. This new pivot works well in the President's flipping of Angirisian foreign policy, as he seeks to build strong ties with new nations across the world. Carpathia would be but the first. This clash of policy however with the State Department is likely to strain relations between Ms. McMahon and President Regal, who reluctantly kept Ms. McMahon as Secretary of State due to President Leonard Briscoe's urging he do so.

Only time will be able to tell what exactly holds for this venture but it is likely to be an interesting encounter between the leader of one the strongest nations in Nysa and the leader of arguably one of the strongest democracies in Caprecia.

BREAKING: Stephanie McMahon out at State
Clashes with President William Regal has cost Secretary of State Stephanie McMahon (above) her job

by: Stephen Jones - Stephanie McMahon is gone. The Secretary of State has been fired by President William Regal, in a statement released by the President's House earlier today. According to the statement, McMahon was released due to "insubordination" and "deliberate attempts to sabotage Angirisian foreign policy and undermine Angirisian credibility around the world". This comes months after McMahon made controversial comments about Carpathian Dictator Kainan Wolfe amidst a brewing fight between the Allied States of Carpathia and Moldova and the Democratic Republic of Aurentina. McMahon also was cited as being "rude, mischievous and absolutely unprofessional in every manner, particular when addressing subordinates within the State Department".

Rumors had abound that Secretary McMahon and President Regal have had numerous shouting matches and loud arguments, at least one time taking place during an Advisory Council meeting a month after President Regal was sworn in. The Presidential Guard had at one point to physically restrain McMahon because she had reportedly threatened to strike the President.

There is no known possible successor to McMahon at present. Senator Christopher Witt (D-Virginia), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee is reported to have been floated as a choice. Other rumored names have been Governor James E. Raynor (P-Mar Sara), Justice Aldaris Ki'Tari (R-Aiur), Governor Bo Shen (D-Xiansai) and Senator Thomas Lachdanan (D-Khanduras).

Christopher Witt tapped to be new Secretary of State
Senator Christopher Witt (D-Virginia, above) is said to be the next Secretary of State
by: Sean Gibbons - President William Regal has apparently selected his new Secretary of State. According to preliminary reports, President Regal has unofficially picked Democratic Senator Christopher Witt of Virginia for the United States' top diplomat.

Witt, 34 years old from Arlington, Virginia, has been the Class I Senator from the Dominion State for the last 10 years and in the last term was elected Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He was also a major part in getting President Regal re-elected in the last presidential election. Witt is also considered one of the best foreign policy minds in all of Angiris, and is highly respected amongst his peers. The Foreign Relations Committee is expected to send Witt to the full Senate for confirmation, where he is expected to fly through the Senate with relative ease, aside from Libertarian and Republican hard-liners.

President Regal is believed to be preparing to make the announcement within the next few days along with Senator Witt and others. Stephanie McMahon, the previous Secretary of State, is not allowed to be at the announcement.

President Regal officially nominates Senator Christopher Witt as Secretary of State
Senator Christopher Witt (D-Virginia, above) was officially nominated by President William Regal to be the new U.S. Secretary of State
by: Jordan Engleman - President William Regal made it official that he was nominated Senator Christopher Witt, a Democrat from the state of Virginia and Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, as the 10th Secretary of State of the United States of Angiris. Mr. Witt, if confirmed, would be the second Secretary of State under President Regal's fourth administration, and would only be the *fourth Secretary of State throughout all of Mr. Regal's three previous administrations (Dave Taylor and Fit Finlay were the first two from Mr. Regal's first three terms; Stephanie McMahon was a holdover from the previous presidency). The Senator would take over a State Department whose reputation has suffered as of late due to the belligerent and often confrontational style of former Secretary Stephanie McMahon, who was dismissed by the President earlier last month due to insubordination, disrespect of the President and actual threats of physical harm to the President and other federal officials.

President Regal said at the press conference that he convened to announce Mr. Witt's nomination, "Senator Witt is by far the best man for the job. If confirmed, Mr. Witt will perform his duties amicably and will be courteous to all nations, left, right or indifferent." Mr. Regal also said that Senator Witt shares his diplomatic goals and aspirations over the next four years. "We think alike. We both believe that to be a global power, we must act worthy of such a title. So therefore, he is as committed as I am to building, and in some cases re-building, our public profile so that Angirisians around the world will be proud of the effective way we do business here in Tristram."

Senator Witt appeared graceful and happy upon taking the podium, and reiterated the challenges he faced, "I know that taking this office is a monumental task. I am the top diplomat of my country, and I feel that the top diplomat of his country should act as a diplomat and not as a bully."

Mr. Witt is expected to face a vote from the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, which he chairs and thus must abstain, within the coming days. If confirmed by the Committee, his nomination will go to the full Senate for an up or down vote. All observers believe Mr. Witt will cruise by both votes.

*EDIT: correction about how many Secretaries of States President William Regal has had serving him through four terms*

Mestran Defense Ministry bans nuclear weapons
The Mestran Federation becomes second nation in Syntreal to ban nuclear weapons
by: Leo Thatcher - Yesterday the Mestran Federation's Defense Ministry announced that the Federation Armed Forces has halted any and all nuclear weapons development. Emperor Nicholas signed a law and issued an imperial decree backing this decision. Mestra has now become the second country in Syntreal to ban nuclear weapons; the United States was the first one to do it in Syntreal in 278, two years after the original United States was formed.

The Presidency officially made a statement hours after the decision was made, saying, "This decision by the Mestran Defense Ministry is an important and positive step for the non-proliferation and eventual disarmament of nuclear weapons in Syntreal and indeed around the world." The State Department, speaking through a spokesperson in lieu of a Secretary, said, "The removal of the threat of nuclear weapons on our eastern border is an important step for the continued improvement of Mestran-Angirisian relations."

Kehjistan State Assembly debates gay marriage ban
The Republican-led Kehjistan State Assembly has been debating a ban on gay marriage for several days now
by: Alex Campbell in CALDEUM, Kehjistan - In an unusual move by Angirisian standards, the state assembly of Kehjistan has announced that a bill banning gay marriage has reached the floor. If this bill is passed by the assembly and signed by Governor Hakan Numan, a Republican, Kehjistan would become the first state among the sixteen original United States to ban gay marriage and the tenth in the entire country. Already, bans on gay marraige exist in nine of the ten states of Aiuria.

The bill has been highly condemned by Democrats, Progressives and Centrists, who have accused the Republicans of discrimination based on sexuality. Governor Numan has also signaled his concern over the bill, saying, "I don't want to be the first Angleterran governor to clamp down on civil rights." However, Mr. Numan has not revealed if he would veto the bill if it reached his desk, raising concerns among liberal circles that the bill is going to become law. The chairman of the Kehjistan Democratic Party released a statement saying, "If this ban on gay marriage is passed, it will send a strong message to the rest of Angiris that it's okay to discriminate against people who are just like us, the only difference being they have a different preference of lovers. It is despicable and we urge Governor Numan to take a stand and stand on the side of civil rights."

The pro-gay rights lobby Rainbow Equality has announced in the wake of this new law that if it is passed, it will automatically file a lawsuit against Kehjistan to have the law taken off the books or press for a statewide referendum in November 327 to have the law overturned. Already, Rainbow Equality has filed lawsuits against gay marriage bans in five other states and are preparing lawsuits in two others.

Robert Carter out as Speaker; Tassadar Hieriguma elected
Upset Centrists led by Del. Tassadar Hieriguma (C-Windsor, above) ousted Speaker Robert Carter (C-Westmarch) months after elections
by: Don Schiff - For the first time in U.S. House of Delegates history, a sitting Speaker has been voted out. Earlier today in House session, an uprising of Centrists angry with Speaker Robert Carter's refusal to allow several spending bills to come to the floor filed a discharge petition requesting a vote of confidence or no confidence in the Speaker. Though Carter initially tried to block it, the petition was approved by the House by a simple up or down vote. Minutes later, the Centrists, Democrats and Republicans in the House voted no confidence in Speaker Carter and moved to remove him from his position. House Libertarians, especially Del. Mitchell Stevens (L-Anatolia), warned that the vote setup a dangerous precedent for future Speakers that if they didn't do exactly what the majority caucus wanted, they'd be outed in an instant. Del. Eros Anderson (D-Korhal), one of only three Democrats who voted against the motion, also expressed worry and said that rules had been broken, "The majority coalition violated the House rules by interrupting normal business to bring this vote to the floor. The fact that it passed has damaged our chamber's ability to act accordingly. This is an incredibly dangerous precedent."

Del. Tassadar Hieriguma (C-Windsor) was voted in as the new Speaker of the House before the day's business was concluded. Hieriguma was not involved in the motion to remove Speaker Carter and did not vote but was chosen more so out of respect. Hieriguma, 55, was the Speaker of the House of Delegates for ten years in Aiuria's national government before the merger with Angleterre. He also served as delegate to Aiur's 6th Constituency for twenty years, before moving to the 13th Constituency for another eight years. Hieriguma is the first foreign-born Delegate to serve as Speaker of the House in the United States' fifty-one year history. He is slated to make his first speech as Speaker in the coming days, for the House of Delegates takes a five-day break before re-convening on June 19.

Victory for gay rights as Kehjistan law crashes and burns
Kehjistan State Assembly tables gay marriage ban as pressure mounted on the legislature from all angles
by: Alex Campbell in CALDEUM - The Kehjistan State Assembly moved today to table a gay marriage ban that would have serious implications on the rights of homosexual citizens of the state in the future. The motion was carried with 82 voting to table the measure and 10 voting to keep the measure alive for at the very least debate if not a vote.

Pressure mounted on the State Assembly by numerous pro-gay rights groups and even from the Justice Department to either table or vote down the bill. Governor Hakan Numan, a Republican, also finally signaled that if the bill passed, it was likely he would eventually veto it and send it back to the Assembly. Numan received praise from Democrats and Progressive for his stance. Pro-gay lobby Rainbow Equality congratulated the governor, whose opposition appears to have been enough to kill the bill. "We congratulate Governor Numan for taking this stance to stand up for civil rights for all Kehjistanis." said Rainbow Equality's spokesman. U.S. Attorney General Edmund Jennings Randolph also spoke out against the bill, adding that the DoJ would file a federal lawsuit against the state of Kehjistan to block the bill. The case would have eventually went to the Supreme Court.
