"The basic idea is for a vehicle much like the Minnimonte Mk. II, but bigger." "Bigger?" "Yeah, and way cooler looking." "I don't know if we have a budget for cool, let me check our wingy-bit allowance." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A women in a lab coat set up an easel with a very detailed pencil drawing of a tank on it, while a stern and tired looking old man sat in an overstuffed chair across from it. The woman extended a metal pointer and tapped the drawing. "This, Chairman Keblit, is our new proposal for a Main Battle Tank to replace both the Minnimonte and Challeywell models, the Jarvis. It is to be highly mobile, very well armed, and armored with state-of-the-art explosive reactive armor panels and composite armor blends. This will help us match the armored forces of any military around the world and propel our tank forces into the modern age!." The old Chairman sat there, looking at her quite sternly as she finished her excited little opening but otherwise said nothing. The woman nervously cleared her throat and placed a new page on the easel, this one a schematic of the tank and its working parts. "It's to be powered by a Crumbis 1100 horse power turbocharged 12 cylinder diesel engine. This will give it an immense power/weight ratio and excellent endurance as well as a very high estimated top speed of at least 60km/h, and could likely be improved through modification and engine upgrades!" The man continued to looking at her and the picture, nonspeaking. The woman began to sweat and quickly set up the easel again with a new picture, showing a slab of armor. "We've discovered a Smitwicks armor blend in the archives that doesn't ignite when hit by heat rounds, so this tank won't constantly smolder after being hit. As well we've designed the shape to better deal with threats from kinetic perpetrators and designed ERA and spaced armor packages around this shape. The overall effect is a fairly small amount of armor protecting well above its weight class and giving this tank adequate protection against enemy fire. It won't be trading blows with enemy tanks but it'll survive a hit and be able to get away." Still nothing from the Chairman, yet another picture. This one showed the workings of a large cannon. "Um...well...uh...this is our cannon design from the South Nigeltowne Workshops For The Betterment of Long Range Bombardment, the B-4a 100mm smooth-bore cannon. It's essentially a scaled up version of the battle-tested and excellent B-2c on the Minnimonte and was made to replace it for the upgunning program. It's fed by a 5 round drum and auto-loader and should be more mechanically reliable than the one on the B-2c. With the Jarvis's enhanced optics we expect to be able to hit a tank from a mile out every 4 seconds and reload the drum in less than 30." The man sat there as she removed finished and simply stared at her for a time. Finally, he spoke up in an oddly high voice. "Right...fast medium tank, has to do 70+km/h and be no more than 2.4 meters high. And get rid of all that armor, especially the Smitwicks blend you dug up, it was far too expensive to use. It'll work with the Montes in support of the Challeys, so it won't need much armor. Have the revised designs on my desk in a week." he said as he got up and walked into the next room. The woman blustered and stammered "B-but...but sir!" "Can't hear you, very busy." the chairman shouted as he sat at his desk in the next room and opened a newspaper, feet on the desk. He turned to the woman after a moment and said "Be a dear and close my door before you leave, won't you?" |

"So we're going to have to lighten the ever living crap out of the design if it's going to be as fast and light as they want it to be. Basically we have to give up on the Main Battle Tank concept almost entirely and just make a medium tank." Adriana Nettlebicker, Head of Design, said to the others gathered around a meeting table laden with drawings and models. The youngest member of this design team sighed and looked at a chart. "Well we can try replacing more of the tracks with rubber. But that's only gonna knock off a couple hundred pounds at best. The armor is still the killer." he said. Adriana frowned and looked at the model, turning it over in her hands. "We'll have to cut most of the armor out then, rely on the ERA packages and spaced armor. Those won't be part of the tank's official weight so we can kinda cheat. Optics have to be changed too, they turned down the system we made especially for the Jarvis. All we can use is modified optics from other tanks, I suggest taking the one from the Challeywell. The velocities and ballistics will be somewhat similar." They went on like this for hours, debating and compromising and drinking....mostly the drinking. Eventually they settled on a new design. THey quickly sent it to the Head Chairman and waited for his response. After about 4 hours the fax machine finally sprung to life and Adriana snatched the paper out of it and read, smile turning to frown turning to confusion turning to anger. She read aloud. "Seems alright, but I don't like how little armor it has. What are you idiots trying to do, get our men killed? I like the weight though, keep it where it is or lower if you can get it. These damn things always cost so much to ship because of how heavy you morons make them. And put the Challeywell gun on it, that'll save us on ammo costs." The group went back to drinking. |

![]() "THIS THING IS AWESOME, WHOOOO!" "LET'S SEE IF WE CAN CATCH AIR IN THIS THING, AIM FOR THAT BERM!" Adriana watched as the her prized prototype proceeded to fly off a berm, go about twenty feet and land before skidding into one of the shacks that littered the sit of the course. She sighed and reminded herself to be glad that it at least hadn't lost a track. The crew were laughing hysterically as they back away and sped off again. A young member of the design team walked and and tapped Adriana on the shoulder. "They seem to be having fun." he said, smiling. "You missed them accidentally firing the gun into a portapotty, you can still probably smell it though." "Yeah....I was....uh....kinda wondering what that was....anyway, how's our baby doing?" There was another crash as the tank hit a wall, one of the the crew sporting a bloody nose and still laughing. Adriana turned back to the young designer. "Well it's sturdy at least." she said "They've clocked it at about 60km/h too, so we're on track for getting that speed requirement." ".....well we got another fax from the Head Chairman...." She buried her face in her hand. "Oh god, what now?" "He wants it to be stealthy." "IT'S A FUCKING TANK!" Edited by Fien, Aug 7 2013, 02:24 PM.

![]() "Ok, so....the basic idea is this." Adriana Nettlenicker said, pointing at the picture of the latest prototype they had created, what they hoped was the final one. "The armour on the Jarvis is fairly uniform between the fronts and sides, but ERA is focused primarily on the turret and the frontal armour, where we expect the most fire to hit. We've settled on the 100mm gun, but it can use the Challeywell 90mm if need be, though we really don't suggest it because of the stresses. Technicians tell us you can tune the Crumbis engine to give it the power it needs to get 70km/h on roads, so it should have plenty of speed. All this while keeping at about 45 tonnes. This as good tank as we can make it and as good as you'll find for the specifications you gave us." Chairman Keblit nodded silently as she gave her report, eyes glazed over. After she finished he kept nodding for a few moments before seeming to snap back and stand up. "Lovely, lovely, glad to see you were able to meet all those goals you set for yourself. Personally I wouldn't have worried about the weight so much, but it'll save us a little bit of fuel I suppose. We have plenty of that, though.....Anyway! I'll look over the material list and modify it to try and reduce the cost as much as possible, one kind of steel is as good as another after all. I'll fax you the revisions in a week or so, ta ta." Later that day the Chairman found several odd, foot-sized hole in the wall outside his office and could not figure out where they have come from. |
