I'm porting this over from main NS. Its a thread I had there but it died. So I am moving it here. The original post is below. So, I've had this idea in the back of my head for a while, constantly developing it, until I finally decided that it was complex enough to put on paper. This is a character based RP, taking place on the small colony of Asheron, an outpost in the Verge (The border of the Phoenix Arm of the Milky Way galaxy and, subsequently, the border of the Imperium Karpates as well). A mere ten years back, a team of archaeologists uncovered something on a nearby colony, while investigating the ruins of an ancient civilization known as the Precursors or First Civilization, the first civilization in the galaxy, which mysteriously vanished some 2 billion years ago. They called that finding the Star Map and at first, it didn't really attract too much attention from anyone, especially since the Carpathian Reconquista was in full swing and everyone was focused on the conflict between the Imperium Karpates and the Intersystem Alliance. However, once news of it reached the highest ranks of the Imperium, order was sent from the core worlds of the Voievodate itself to kill the archaeologists and destroy the entire planet. A fleet of ships was dispatched and singularity weapons were used to reduce the planet to dust. Legends about this Star Map abound, some say it lead to a treasure trove of technology left by the Precursors. Others say it is a map to the Precursor homeworld, somewhere in the Outer Rim, or the even more dangerous Uncharted, a region of space now impossible to navigate due to a huge number of spatial anomalies which will rip apart any ships who cross it. The Star Map remained a legend until recently, when a rumour surfaced that it was smuggled offworld before the Voievodate fleet arrived to destroy the planet. And according to the rumour, the Star Map was transported through a number of systems, its last known location being the small colony of Asheron. Ten years ago, Asheron was a vibrant and growing colony, under the governance of the democratic, multi-species union called the Intersystem Alliance. However, the Carpathian's had launched their Reconquista, who's purpose was to unite the human colonies of the Phoenix Arm. Since Asheron was a predominately human colony, the Carpathians struck hard. Now, Asheron sits right at the edge of the Imperium Karpates and smack in between the territories of three Carpathian warlords. Also, in recent years, the injured Intersystem Alliance, which from a galactic power has been reduced to a coalition of economically exhausted worlds, has finally licked its wounds and started to look to its former member colonies with a certain kind of hunger. ISA armadas have began launching an increasing number of raids on Asheron and its neighboring colonies and to make matters worse, a Carpathian criminal organization known as the Syndicate of Thieves, operates on the colony, which has become something sort of their local HQ. Syndicate fleets constantly patrol the system, something which has kept the three warlords away, who do not want to become involved in a war of attrition against the Syndicate, especially since they are all looking forward to the upcoming renewal of the hostilities against Intersystem Alliance. Due to the tensions, the Asheron system is plagued by piracy and a heaven for smugglers. Asheron itself has a population of 800 million and is ruled by a corrupt, Syndicate-controlled government. Poverty is high and laws seem to be limited to "Obey the local crime lord". Whatever law enforcement is present, only acts as thugs for the Syndicate and without the presence of a warlord, who's military power would pacify the planet, Asheron is facing civil unrest, high crime rates and frequent terrorist attacks from non-human minority groups. There are several factions present and operating in and around Asheron, all of which are presented below:
Ok, so it goes like this. Your character has either learned on his/her own about the Star Map and decides, for whatever reason, to look for it, or your character is backed by a government/corporation/other organization which seeks to get its hands on the secrets of the map. Either way, the said character must have at least some resources at his/her disposal, enough to enable him/her to look for the map. On the other side, I don't want your character to have a whole fleet at his/her disposal, a single ship is enough. You can be anything, from a pirate or mercenary, to scientist, to governmental operative. This will be a series of threads, with each thread forming a chapter. For the first chapter, players will be confined to Zafira and most of the action should take place on Asheron, which is where they will arrive. From this point on, what you do is up to you, but bear in mind that you will run into the Syndicate and the other factions along the way, so you will have to get involved into criminal activity. Below, you will find an application form for your character. Once at least five characters have signed up, we can start the first thread.

Well, there are different chapters. This is only chapter one, which is mostly on Asheron. Seeing as how our characters are now working together, we could feasibly find the Star Map together. His little description for chapter one says that it attracted "all sorts" of treasure hunters. That can be changed later if it ends up only being us. There are till plenty of spots for others to join in. Here are some I came up with right now: #1: meeting us in Pickaxe City -Obviously, there's still time to come to Pickaxe City, although that window is starting to close. You could be a treasure hunter, or a bounty hunter looking for Juster, since he technically didn't destroy the research, which he was supposed to. Maybe that bad information got out to his former employer, and now that former employer is looking for Juster now. #2: Meeting us in the cave/complex -Meet us at the cave, explaining how the character came to know that it was in the cave, maybe they spied on us, or maybe there are bugs in Pickaxe City set up by Asheron Central or Rust City criminals. -Meet us at the cave, having already been looking for the complex for some other reason (there's surely some other artifacts and riches in the complex. -A local traveler or nomad who is staying in the cave or near the cave -A bounty hunter searching for either Juster or one of RC's commandos -Maybe your character was trapped in the complex for some reason, idk why, maybe he was a machine built to protect it, or simply a human or other alien set up to protect the map, this complex as only built like 10 years ago or something, so there could feasibly be a bunch of guys in the complex. Either they join us to use the map or oppose us to keep the wealth of the map from falling into bad hands. The people in the complex could be REALLY crazy after ten years or so trapped in the complex. a crazy guy could be funny and interesting at the same time -Maybe your robot character is released after we take the map. That'd be scary. Again, could join or oppose us #3 after we get the map. -Maybe the other crime lords in Central and Rust City find out what's going on and get pissed about it and send some guy's to kill us and take the map. -maybe you go to Pickaxe City and wait for us to return -your character could try to stop us from leaving pickaxe city, leaving a tracker on either Juster's ship or Balzer's ship to find us. -the crime lords might try to attack Pickaxe City, and so Assod asks Juster and Balzar to help in the defense of the city. After the attack, Assod asks the two of them to lead the attack on the crime lords in Asheron Central or Rust. We might refuse or accept. Maybe your character is a ranking officer in the pickaxe city security administration and so they meet up in the attack. Once your character learns about Juster's star map, he/she wants to help out, and Juster accepts. Or, your character might try to sabatoge our mission, who knows... --- Thats about all I've got for this chapter. Naturally, the start of the next chapter could be a great spot to start up. I don't know what Carp's plans are for chapter 2 and beyond. |

Hey RC, what exactly would happen if Assod took Balzar up on his offer? I'm just curious. I don't want to be gamey, but I don't know if he'd be willing to make such a decision in the first place, and if the planet would be taken over roughly, he'd probably be in a LOT of trouble, especially if Balzar's friends didn't treat Pickaxe City kindly. |

Balzar's "friends" is the IA, they would come and help them secure the ships and drive away the Syndicate from the Carpathian fleet. Depending on how Assod and the people in Pickaxe City would react, they might help resecure the planet and help the people of Pickaxe City. In return they would take most of the ships, leaving enough to help protect the planet, and they would have to declare allegiance to the IA. |

Shifting allegiance to the ISA might not be the best course of action for Asheron or Pickaxe City. The Carpathians still outnumber and outgun the ISA fleet and can also outmaneuver them. The ISA has only a slight technological advantage in the form of beam weapons and shields. |

Hmmm I'm thinking that bringing the ISA might be more useful in the future when we aren't on Asheron, where the superior firepower of a fleet of warships would be devestatingly powerful. If we fight any other characters or pirates or whatever we could really give them a surprise lol. Btw, I kinda sort of feel like Carp is playing game-master here is that the intention? I don't mind, just curious, placing traps, pitfalls, guiding us along the way.

Yep, I'm acting as GM for this thread, as this is plot driven and there are certain things which you are going to run into (won't reveal spoilers, though). Also, a little insight on the background, which may be useful: Up until a decade ago, the ISA was the dominant power of the Phoenix Arm, until the Imperium wrested control from them. The Phoenix Arm was colonized by Earth some thousands of years ago, at the same time Oracia was. When Earth fell, the under-developed colonies of the Phoenix Arm were left to fend for themselves and as such, a technological dark age followed and many colonies became extinct. Some of the British and French colonies, however, were developed enough that they were able to become self-sufficient and as such, the loss of technology for them was less severe. They formed the English Channel Pact, which was the predecessor of what would later become the Intersystem Alliance. These colonies will later become the Alliance core worlds. Using their technological advantage, they began expanding outwards, conquering or subduing the less advanced colonies (at first, in the Outer Rim, which forms the galactic northern and southern border of the Phoenix Arm), then slowly expanding for the next few hundred years alongside the Uncharted (the region which separates the Phoenix Arm from the rest of the galaxy, spacial and gravitational anomalies make this region of space impossible to navigate). The Intersystem Alliance was formed with the signing of the New London Accords, 800 years prior to the events in Armageddon Blues. At its peak, the ISA encompassed more than 2000 colonies. In theory, the ISA is a democracy, but the core worlds have more representatives in the Masonic Senate (the ISA governing body) and corporations are also allowed to participate in the political process, making this, for all purposes, a corporate state. The core worlds prosper, while the other ISA planets suffered under corporate slavery and were prevented from rebelling by strict laws concerning weapons ownership and the ever-present corporate private military contractors, which made sure no one came up with thoughts of secession. Fifty-three years ago, first contact was made with Oracian exploration ships. At first, it looked as if the explorers represented the interests of a group of trading nations, called the Allied States of Carpathia and Moldova, seeking to expand their trade routes. Always eager in opening up new markets, ISA corporations welcomed the explorers, which traveled throughout the ISA, apparently assessing trade possibilities. It was all a ruse, of course. The explorers were, in fact, scouts, part of a much larger and more powerful fleet of ships. No one knows exactly where the Carpathians came from, though it is rumored that they were forced into exile from their own planet, after a brutal global war, which they lost. Their fleets arrived at the world of Kazira, an independent colony in the galactic east, near the Traverse, which was at the time, being invaded by the ISA. The Carpathian fleets brought with them new and strange technologies, such as self-repairing nano-weave, tesseract and 4-dimensional space manipulation, artificial singularity and tactical FTL. And they struck hard, obliterating the ISA 78th armada, which was laying siege to Kazira. Using the element of surprise, they annihilated the ISA invaders above Kazira in less than two hours. At first, the government of Kazira welcomed the Carpathians with open arms. It was a mistake they did not live to regret. The Carpathians had came to Kazira as liberators, but instead, they conquered it. Renaming it into Carpathia Nova, they immediately consolidated their grip on the system, establishing defenses, infrastructure and laws. The ISA responded by sending another armada, the 91st, to Carpathia Nova, confident in their superior numbers and technology. That fleet was not heard from since. Concerned with the other wars they were involved in and deeming Carpathia Nova too insignifficant, they left the new arrivals alone. That was the mistake which sealed their fate. The Carpathians spent the next four decades consolidating their grip on Carpathia Nova and slowly expanding outwards, cautiously taking colony after colony, careful to pick the ones that the ISA wasn't paying attention to. Using the advantage of their centralized industry and their socialist economy, they quickly built a massive force, as more and more people flocked to join the military, while their shipyards churned out new warships around the clock. Back in the ISA, the corporate capitalist economy and private interests, insured that the bureaucratic chaos would have prevented the Alliance from building up their forces to meet this new threat in time, even if they would have taken notice of it. Ten years ago, the Carpathians made their final move. They unleashed a deadly invasion against the ISA. Although outnumbered, they used cunning, clever tactics and hit-and-run attacks to cripple the ISA defenders. Taking advantage of the ISA's weakened state, many of its less-fortunate colonies rebelled, instigated and supported by Carpathian agents. As such, the ISA now faced a war on two fronts, both against the Carpathian fleets and against the rebels in their own territory, which were backed by the Carpathians. The socialist system in Carpathia was very attractive for many ISA-occupied worlds and as such, many of their residents flocked to join the Carpathian war effort. Quickly, it turned into a war of attrition, which the ISA, who was losing resources, ships and manpower throughout the sector, could not win. It took less than two years for the Carpathians to utterly crush the ISA, forcing an uneasy truce with the Treaty of New Bucharest. In the final days of the war, the desperate ISA navy sought to deprive the Carpathians of as many resources as they could, bombing any planets they retreated from into nuclear oblivion (which was the fate of Asheron). Now, both sides are consolidating and preparing for a new round of hostilities, which will determine the future of the Phoenix Arm. http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2013/053/6/6/phoenix_arm_map_by_krushvarrok-d5vvv6q.jpg Here is a map of the Phoenix Arm. |

This seems like something I could get into but I have to ask about the actual factions that exist in this universe. Besides the super capitalist mess that is the ISA and the Uber-socialist empire of Capathia, what other powers influence the region that I could draw from. |

You could make up your own. As NPC nations, there's allso the Skillyan Assembly, which is the third most powerful group (and growing fast), basically a caste-system slaver nation, descended from a former penal colony established by Earth. They're also very ritualistic and religious and have stuff like human sacrifice and ritual cannibalism. Also, there's the Verge Nations. The Verge Nations aren't a unified faction, more like a collection of worlds ruled by crime, corporations and anarchy (basically smuggler's heaven). http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2013/053/6/6/phoenix_arm_map_by_krushvarrok-d5vvv6q.jpg Here is a map if it helps you. Also, as I said, you can also make your own nation, since I intend to launch this universe as either an FT group here, or maybe even propose it as the FT canon. |
