The Meeting That Will End No Meetings; Kubaniza-Lanlania Talks

To: The King of Lanlania, King Soren Bonde
From: The Office of the Hetman, Dmytro Khmelnytsky

The fight between our nations, and ultimately our alliances, has come to a low. With this lull in the rivalry, I see no reason for the unneeded contempt and non-cooperation to continue. I cannot speak for the alliance of which I am a member, but I can speak for my nation of Kubaniza. The fighting must end, and so we are requesting that a meeting be set up between yourself, King Soren, and myself, Hetman Dmytro, to - as you could say - talk things out.

The reason that I request a personal, face-to-face meeting of the heads of state and not simply diplomats, is because of the magnitude of the rivalry and the potential for destruction that it has wrought. I hope that you have the sense to accept this request.

Your friend,
Dmytro Khmelnytsky

Hetman,

Perhaps you are right. Tensions between our alliances have dissipated as of late. However, I fear these the fires remain–weaker, perhaps, but they endure. It behooves us, then, to, in a peaceful sense of mind and with memory of those we stand behind us, come together and attempt to stifle permanently these threats to ourselves, our people, and the world as a whole. To reject this opportunity would betray both those who depend on us and Him on whom we depend.

Therefore, I consent to this meeting, and take this opportunity to invite you to my retreat on the Fargo Islands between the eighteenth and twenty-first of December.

With Trust,
Soren Theodor Augustus Bonde

Fargo Islands Retreat, Lanlania
December 19th, 314 RE

The Hetman had flown over to Lanlania on a plane to a larger airport near/in the Fargo Islands before being loaded onto a helicopter which flew him to the Bonde retreat. He had left his private bodyguards with the plane and came to the retreat with only himself and two advisors. He was ushered in through the private retreat and into a room where he would be speaking with the Lanlanian King.

Dramadël, Länlania
314, December 15

It was the same room the Medaveii had entered, months earlier. The atmosphere wasn't much different since then either. The doors to the outside lay open, allowing the pond and it's lonely companion tree, as well as the forest that began beyond the stone wall a few dozen meters away, to project communion with nature. The forest pine air flowed inside, merging with the light Kyoman incense aroma that mingled in the air.

Soren entered moments after the Hetman, a pair of aids following close behind. The two heads of state shook hands, smiling politely to one another. The aids, however, went straight to the coffee table that faced the outside and left a tea set and a tray of snacks.

"Welcome," Soren said, "I hope your trip was pleasant." He gestured to the array of sofas gathered around the table, taking his own seat on one end and beginning to serve them both tea. "Please, join me.

"Sir Khmelnytsky, I must admit, your letter took us by surprise. We weren't quite expecting an IA member to reach out for... detente talks. Perhaps you enlighten me as to what encouraged you?"

"We wish to lessen tensions, is all we really want. High tensions discourage trade and we don't want to constantly have the fear of our greatest enemies on our very own borders. I am sure you feel the same." Dmytro took a sip of the tea offered, even though he wasn't all that in to tea it was polite.

"In short, we want to be able to focus on other areas."

Soren nodded cautiously as he watched the Hetman speak. Focus on other areas. "Indeed," he began, "many within my government feel threatened, especially so after the Hetmanate invited the Deltorians onto East Uroca. That is our main dissatisfaction. Your internal affairs are of little concern to the Commonwealth.

"I'm sure you've come with a plan, however. What do you believe is necessary for the dissipation of tensions?"

"Well one idea is to put together a trade agreement. Economic cooperation is generally a good way to calm the public down. If you are profiting from trade with another, one tends to get less agitated towards them." The Hetman suddenly coughed before excusing himself and continuing.

"I also hear that you are continuing your old 'War on Piracy' which was first started in the Landaran Sea some time ago. Perhaps, as a sign of good will and our wish for peace in the world, the Hetmanate could aid your operations in some way. Perhaps by supplying troops, ships, supplies, all of which I know would be needed in your fight against the pirates. The pirates to the north are considerably stronger than the ones you faced in Sabine, as you should know."

Soren smirked slightly, moments before he took a sip of tea. "Kubanizan participation in the War on Piracy, eh...

"We are preparing another strike further north, to squish their Pacis fleets between us and the Syntrealites. Perhaps a few Kubanizans destroyers might join us. There's also a possibility we'll assist the Syntrealites in invading the pirate's core territories, though I'm not sure of that'll be necessary. I suggest you keep a few marine forces prepared however, if you seek involvement.

"As to a trade treaty... can you remind me what your state specializes in? As well as the work environment in those industries?"

"Precious metals and valuable stones are abundant in the southern mountains of Kubaniza, though northern Kubaniza and Makorland both have large farming sectors, mostly grain but other crops are found," Dmytro said. He took another sip of the tea, holding back a cringe, then said, "The working conditions as good as you could expect. Mining is by nature a dangerous job, though in most cases things go on as usual. Good workers get paid good money, as you would expect in any other business, though bad workers don't get paid as good money. My nation has a very capitalist tradition and government interference in the economy is minimal, though we do have the necessary regulations in place to ensure there is no worker abuse."

Soren scowled slightly. "We import a fair amount of precious metals from the Ichamurians, unfortunately, while our food needs are met through a mixture of native production in Salkmark and Southerland and imports from Magilan, as well as other Zaran states. However, perhaps we might open one another's civilian markets to each other's companies?"

"Seems like a wonderful idea, Mr. Soren," he said, "I also believe a reduction on tariffs would be a smart move to encourage trade between our nations."

Dmytro set the tea cup down and turned to an aide. "Excuse me, could you see about bringing me some wine?" He'd prefer something stronger but wine seemed appropriate. Turning back to Soren, he said, "The details can be sorted out later or by some ambassadors. As for the War on Piracy, Kubaniza would be more than happy to provide some destroyers and a marine force to help.

"To add to the current thoughts, here's another: a demilitarized border. Our border is small and it shouldn't be hard to enforce such a demilitarization."

"Indeed," Soren answered. "Our forces on the border are already minimal. However, I'm afraid that the border is the first line of defense. Unlike Kubaniza, which has the Tavis Mountains to protect it's core-lands, it's an easy trip through the Sydmarker plains to the coast. A full demilitarize would make Sydmarkers uncomfortable, especially due to your government's ties abroad.

"However, simply moving the line back would be reasonable. The Commonwealth could withdraw it's forces back to the river's bend, if Kubaniza does similar and... avoids stationing foreign troops east of the Tavis."

A moment after Soren finished speaking, the aid returned, carrying wine imported decades prior from a West Urocan state. The aid proceeded to serve the Kubanizan a glass, before doing similar to his king.

"We can agree to that. Your forces will be moved back past the river's bend and mine will be moved back an equal distance. So - trade, cooperation in the war against piracy, and partial demilitarization of the border." Dmytro took a long drink from the wine glass before continuing. "I would think we have accomplished much for a first meeting."

He leaned forward, offering his hand to the king. "Unless there is something else you wish to discuss, I believe we have done adequate work for today. This is one of the first steps to a peaceful and stable Zaroca, Mr. Soren, and let's hope the other steps will soon be taken as well."

"Indeed," Soren answered, taking the man's hand. "It was a pleasure working with you, Sir. I'll contact your government soon on finalizing these agreements."
