There's nothing a drone strike won't fix.

Undisclosed Location, Kubaniza
National Space Agency Research and Development Facility
August 25th, 312 RE

"The operation has begun," said an middle aged man, whose hair was just beginning to turn gray.

"What operation?"

"Operation: Heavenly Future."

"Who gave you the authorization to start that operation?" the other man asked angrily. He himself was in his middle age, though you wouldn't know it if you looked at him. He had a somewhat youthful look about him.

"Mr. Hryhoriy Marko, of course. He does outrank you, you know, Colonel Serhiy."

Colonel Martyn Serhiy at this point was rather frustrated. "Get out of my office. Now!" he said with a raised voice at the man in front of him. The one in front of him was Dr. Oleksandr Taras, lead researcher in a team of some of the best scientists in the country. Their team had been brought together to create a space program for Kubaniza, but their initially planned 'Operation: Heavenly Future' was turned down by Serhiy because of monetary concerns, however it seemed that Hryhoriy Marko, Director of the NSA, had overridden his decision - no doubt after a talk with Taras.

Well, he wasn't happy that his decision had been thrown back into his face, but no matter. It wasn't anything life threatening anyhow. "Ugh," he muttered to himself, "That Dr. Taras will be an annoying one." Serhiy had a habit of sometimes talking to himself, but it helped him focus his thoughts. He had set his sights on the NSA Directorate Council Chairman position, but the Chairman position was assigned by the Director himself, the one who had just overridden him.

No doubt the doctor had his sights on this position as well, but he was confident he would be able to outperform him and impress the Director enough to be assigned the position. Colonel Serhiy was a military supervisor for this operation, and also the one who was in charge of overseeing financing and equipping of the operation. He had a very important job and Dr. Taras knew that. That was why he was trying to get Heavenly Future going. So he could outshine Serhiy by spearheading the Kubanizan space program.

And so the game begins.

"You do understand what this money could mean to our nation, correct?"

"Yes of course, but-"

"But, Mr. Wolodymyr, you would rather hold on to your money, letting it gather dust in some vault, than to use it for an overall profit and make a name for yourself as the one who funded Kubaniza's space program?"

"Colonel, how exactly would this give me a profit?"

Leaning forward, Serhiy said, "Because I can promise you... special privileges when it comes to satellite communication once the program is finished."

The other man thought for a moment, then nodded. "You have your money," he said, "Use it well."

"You know I always do."

He waited for the man to leave and once he was confident that the man was far down the hall, he pumped his fist in joy. He was all too happy to bring his results to the Director, grinning all the way down the hall to the Director's office. He stepped through the door and in front of the secretary's desk.

"I am here to see Director Marko, would you please inform him that I am here," the colonel said.

"The Director is already speaking with someone, but I can-"

The secretary didn't have time to finish her sentence before the colonel walked into the Director's office. Inside Dr. Taras was in mid-statement, talking to Director Marko.

"...and we should be ready to begin testing this theory within the month," Taras was saying.

The Director looked up to see Serhiy. "Ah, Colonel," he said, "Please, take a seat."

Serhiy sat down next to Taras in front of the desk.

"What is it you need, Colonel?"

"I have come to inform you that I have secured the funding required for the project. It wasn't easy, but I finally found a way."

"Wonderful Colonel Serhiy, I am sure the doctor here is also glad to hear this."

Dr. Taras looked slightly annoyed at the interruption, but said, "Yes. This is wonderful news. I was just telling the Director about how we have come up with a theory to get rockets into orbit and should be soon ready to test our theory, but it's nice that we can now... afford it, I suppose."

"Yes, anyway. Thank you both for your reports. Now, if you would please..." he began, motioning the door. They both stood up and left. Down the hall, Taras whispered to Serhiy, "What the hell do you think you are doing, barging in like that?"

"I was simply informing the Director of the good news."

"More like trying to outshine me."

"Were you not doing the same?"

"Hmph."

"3... 2... 1... Liftoff!"

The rocket's engine fired up, throwing massive flames thousands of degrees hot across the launch pad. The rocket, titled the Triumph Mk. 1 was being launched for the first time. It had been tested extensively, but now it was the real thing. Serhiy observed the launch with distaste. He may not have been a rocket scientist, but he didn't like what he saw in the tests. There was a massive difference between tests in certain conditions and firing off a real rocket.

He had warned Taras to continue to test it, but the scientist kept giving reassurances that every possible avenue for mistakes and errors had been explored and protected against, and had finally convinced the NSA Director to give the green light for a real launch. As the rocket just began to lift off of the launch pad, he shifted his gaze over to Dr. Taras, who was approximately twenty feet away from him among a group of scientists. He studied his face and saw that he was very confident.

Suddenly, his facial expression shifted from confidence to horror as he watched the rocket. Serhiy turned to see what Taras saw - the rocket exploding. They were far enough from the rocket to avoid harm, but the launching pad and surrounding structures seemed to have taken significant damage and there were several fires across the ground. The colonel looked back at Taras, who then looked at him. The scientist gulped.

"Do you know what it will fucking cost to repair that launching pad?!" Serhiy was arguing with Taras.

"I don't know what went wrong! We tested-"

"You tested, you tested. Look here - I tried to warn you about that rocket, but you wouldn't fucking listen and now look what you've done!"

"We can improve off of this, we can-"

There was a knock at the door. "Come in," Serhiy said. A man poked his head into the room. "Director Marko wishes to speak with Dr. Taras," he said.

The scientist's expression hardened, he glanced at Serhiy then left the room. Serhiy sighed and held his head in his hands. There was another knock. "Come in," he said. Another man stepped in.

"Sir," he said.

"Yes?"

"I've come to tell you the good news. There was minimal damage to the launch pad from the explosion. We are very lucky."

"Why that's- That's great news!"

Soon after Taras came back in. "What did the Director say?" Serhiy said with a slight grin. He tried to hide it but couldn't help himself. That stinking doctor was surely being removed from the head of the team. There's no way they could keep him on after a show like that.

"He has decided... that I should stay head of the research team-" Serhiy's mouth almost dropped "-but that he expects no more mistakes like this."

Serhiy gathered himself quickly from the surprise. "Well... I suppose you should get back to work, then. Those rockets don't develop themselves."

Serhiy waltzed around the room, occasionally looking over the scientists' shoulders as they toiled in their work. He took notice of a computer sitting on a table near the center of the room. Walking over, he noticed that it had a computer 3D simulation on it of a rocket taking flight. He turned to a nearby scientist. "You," he said, "What's this?"

"It's a 3D model for the rocket we are working on, sir."

He thought for a moment. "And you used this same system for the last rocket?"

The scientist hesitated a bit before answering. "Yes," he said, cautiously.

"Show me the model for the last one."

A few key presses later, a familiar-looking 3D model came up.

"Bring me Taras."

A few minutes later, Dr. Taras walked over, looking rather annoyed at having been interrupted. Then he saw Serhiy. "What do you want?" he said, barely trying to hide his distaste.

"Do you see this?" he said, pointing at the screen. The screen was split in half between the later model and the model of the failed rocket.

"Yes, what about it?"

"They look almost exactly the same."

"Look, we think we know what went wrong last time-"

"You think?"

"-we've changed the texture of the fuel as well as the engine model..."

"Shut up!" Taras stopped talking. "If that thing ends up like the last one, you're screwed and you know it. You may very well bring down the entire project with you. If this thing fails, it's on your head."

Taras swallowed. "It won't fail," he said.

A couple months later

"The rocket has achieved flight, I repeat, the rocket has achieved flight."

There were cheers from around the control room as the massive image at the front of the room of the Triumph Mk. 2 rocket blasting through the air and through the clouds, leaving a trail of smoke as it did. After a while, the voice returned.

"Rocket has achieved orbit! Rocket has achieved orbit!"

Hugging and whooping followed, a couple had tears in their eyes. Well, Serhiy thought, We have a delivery system. Now we need to test it with an actual payload.

"The problem is that the nozzle is simply too overexpanded with the extra weight of the satellite. The fuel inefficiency is far too great," some scientist said.

"Well, what if you..."

"Yes, of course! I'll get right on it, sir!"

"Great," Taras said with a smile. Walking over to another scientist, he said, "What's the word on the assembly?" The scientist readjusted his glasses while saying, "It's going great, sir. We should have the rocket assembled and refitted to fit on the satellite before the end of the week."

"Good," he replied, and he grabbed the man's arm just as he was about to walk off. "I need a favor from you," he said. "What?" the scientist asked. "It concerns Colonel Serhiy. You are close to the man - or at least his work. I need to know what he's up to." The scientist hesitated, looking around. Finally, he said, "Okay, I can tell you this much. He's been making a lot of calls lately and funding has been mentioned many times. I think he's been hard at work securing funding for this project and trying to get his name all over it. And there's another thing - he's been making more and more frequent trips to the Director's office. I don't know what for, but I think he's been trying to get close to the man."

Taras nodded and let him leave. Deciding that he needed to do something about Serhiy’s advances, the doctor made a trip up to the Marko’s office. Knocking on the door as he entered, he saw the Director look up from his desk in surprise. “Doctor Taras, how unexpected…”

“Yes, sorry for the intrusion. I was just so excited I couldn’t wait.” After noticing Marko’s eyebrow raise in a questioning manner, he continued. “You see, we’ve made excellent progress. We’ve been working endlessly the last few months, and we believe we’ve finally come up with a fully-functioning, fuel efficient design. We are expecting to have it finished up, polished up, and ready to test launch by the end of next month.”

“That’s great news,” the Director said, “However, let’s not forget who has managed to accumulate the funds necessary for this rather expensive program. Colonel Serhiy has-“

“Yes, yes,” the doctor said, interrupting Marko, “Sorry, sir. I know how important Serhiy’s work has been to this project, but we must not also forget the months and months of work being put in by our… teams.”

“Yes… our teams,” the Director said, “Anyhow, thank you for bringing me this news. It is certainly good news.”
