The Plunge into Chaos; Cuz I didn't know what else to call it, other than the less cool Tyrric Civil War

Early in the morning at 4:34AM, Senior General Deimonides succumbed to Frosyni's Disease, a vile brain cancer that had already claimed all six of his sons. Having been hospitalized for over a month now, unconscious and with most of his skull removed to alleviate the pressure, everyone (well, the rationaly ones who didn't buy into the propaganda anyway) knew the inevitable had been nye.

The Directorate was notified when it happened. They had already come to an agreement on how to proceed in the post-Deimonides Tyras. There was just the matter of coming together to put on a united face as they announce the news to a shaken public. They were to meet in the Consultation Room, that glass cube inside the larger War Room of the military's headquarters, before they went out to make the announcement. But there was a noticeable absence.

"He's late," General Idrissi said as he swivled back and forth in his chair out of frustration. "Osafenes should have been here hours ago."

Hatz was checking his cell phone for any missed calls or texts by Osafenes, but found nothing. He had already made two unanswered calls to the missing Director. "He said he was on his way, so I'm sure he'll be here." he said as he pocketed his phone. "At this time of the morning, if he came by road he could just be stuck in rushhour traffic."

Idrissi wasn't satisfied by Hatz's assurance. "Why would he come by road, though? They make planes for a reason. To go far fast." The general took a gulp of water from the glass on the table. "I just hope he isn't plotting anything. He's been going off doing things alone a lot recently."

"Don't be paranoid. Osa isn't the sort to make any power plays. He's always been..." Hatz trailed off as he saw what was on the big screen on the other side of the glass wall in the War room. "...the fuck? Is that Fanaitis?" The other three Directors turned to see Fanaitis, on the balcony of the Kounivolu, giving what appeared to be a televised speech. The sound-proof walls of the consultation room prevented his voice from reaching them, so they each scrambled for the door out of the room.

"...and it is with great sadness that I must announce to you the passing of my grandfather, Senior General Deimonides, the great leader of our nation. But fear not! For while he may be gone in body, he remains with all of us in spirit through me. That is why I, with your blessings, vow to take over the reigns as the leader of our mighty nation. However, there are those who would not allow this natural procession to occur. And it is they in the place my grandfather practically called home, in the headquarters of our military, the Directorate, who would deny us this. That is why I call upon all of my brothers in arms in the armed forces and all of my fellow countrymen who own a gun: Go take back my grandfather's home from those who defile it and would see his legacy buried six feet under the ground with his body!"

Almost instantly after Fanaitis's speech there was a push by defecting troops to overrun the TAF Headquarters building. There didn't appear to be any organization on their part, just a flood of army troops into the Knights of Tyras Memorial Gardens that preceeds the building itself. They evidently hadn't expected any resistance, but the Headquarters was heavily guarded by the well paid, well armed, and highly loyal troops of the National Guard who were unlikely to ever turn traitor.

Hatz, who was Director of the National Guard, donned his Guard fatigues and went to the roof to watch the slaughter. From here he could get a lay of the land he never thought he would one day actually have to protect. The Headquarter facility was buffered on one side by the sea and the other by five story buildings that funneled the intruders into only two good points of entry: the main road entering and the main road exiting. There were guard stations at each, though they had been overrun and were burning. Once passed that in the Memorial Gardens, save for an odd statue or tree, was mostly flat. It was once they were on the long steps up to the ornate building that the Guards opened fire from within and on top of the building. With little place to take cover, they had effectivley been herded like lambs to the slaughter. They immediately began to fall back in a frenzied retreat.

Hatz had several subordinates in tow. "I don't want to take any chances, so I want every inch of those gardens mined. With the big ones for armor. If Fanaitis starts rolling tanks in here, we could have problems." One of the Guards saluted and turned towards the door to the HQ's interior to carry out Hatz's order.

It had yet to be seen how big Fanaitis's revolt had or will become, but Hatz felt the Directorate could take little chance. "I also want some helo's ready for an evacuation, if needed."

Down below, Directors Lycurgus and Ketime were busy getting in contact with bases across the country to to assess the impact of Fanaitis's speech. Meanwhile, Idrissi was giving a televised speech on behalf of the Directorate from the Media Room.

"What Fanaitis is suggesting we do is go back to the days of kings and royalty where one's blood, not their deeds, determined their rank. It is that sort of archaic thought that our leader, the late Senior General Deimonides, fought against during his entire military career. If Fanaitis truly embodied Deimonides spirit, then he would have realized the need to stand aside and allow those who earned the right to lead, the Directorate, to carry out their duties."

Immediately upon hearing word of the "great" leader's demise, Admiral Osafenes ordered the fleet to set sail from the captured island of Atari towards the city of Tyras full steam. He himself was onboard the amphibious assault ship Drakonera, flagship of the navy. Half way there came the news of Fanaitis's rebellion.

"Beaten to the punch," he said to himself. He was now within sight of the capital, close enough to see clouds of smoke hovering over it in an otherwise sunny sky. He had been wait years, maybe more than a decade, he couldn't quite remember when he first starting his plotting, for Deimonides to kick the bucket. Now Fanaitis had to go and throw a wrench into his plans.

His cell phone began vibrating against his leg, he took it out to see who was calling. There were now nine missed calls from Fanaitis, but this one was from the Defense Minister, Rear Admiral Diogenes. On his own in his own little corner of the flight deck with the sea to drown out his voice, he popped on his headset to take the call.

"What's the news?" Osafenes asked.

"They're getting more organized. And they've brought in the artillery. The HQ building may literally be nothing more than a pile of rubble soon if they aren't stopped." Diogenes chuckled. "Funny how he told them to go and stop the Directors from 'defiling' the place, but then has them blow it to smitherines."

"Do they not control any of the city?" Diogenes wasn't painting a very good picture of the Directorate's position. Osafenes had suspected dealing with the Directorate would be easier to deal with than Fanaitis. Even though he had planned on toppling them himself, he didn't think seeing the Directorate fall right now would be a good thing.

"Only the places that were under heavy Guard protection. So basically just HQ, the Koinovoulio, and a few other buildings. They've been trying to muster a counter attack, but there are many troops out there who bucking against their officers and refusing to obey orders. Only the Guards seem to be paying them any attention, so they've just started focusing on calling them up. But that delay may make them too late."

There hadn't been any fighting going on anywhere besides the capital yet, Osafenes was relieved at least to hear that that seemed to still be the case.

"What do we do now?" Diogenes asked. Because of Fanaitis, the original plan isn't going to work now.

"I've been thinking about that. I think that, for the time being, we bide our time. Establish our organization, bolster our ranks. Fanaitis and the Directorate will be too concerned with each other to care about us much."

"Will we be going out in the open or not?"

"Soon. I'm going to email you some information and some instructions. Follow them to the T. While you're doing that, I'm going to try to dig the Directorate out of the rubble they've buried themselves under."

Misinformation was rife these days, it seems. Hatz was told that one of the excuses given for not sending reinforcements was that they were led to believe the Headquarters was already obliterated and overrun. Yet here on its roof Hatz continued to stand, the building in one piece.

The buildings surrounding it was another story, though. Those had indeed been obliterated and overrun after Hatz had them occupied to serve as a kind of buffer. Now, from his binoculars, he monitored their movements in the rubble. Some of them had ventured passed and into the mine field he had set for them. He could see horses, cattle, and other livestock being herded in the city streets now.

"No doubt as to what they're for," Hatz said to himself. He sometimes verbalizes his thoughts when he is so engrossed in his planning. "No more buildings to funnel them into the garden with. Even if they clear the minefield, then..."

An explosion sent stone and gore tearing across his field of view. It startled Hatz since the artillery had since stopped after the capture of what was left of those buildings. The first explosion was followed by more at a steady rate "Where the fuck is that comming from?" He began scanning the skies for the plane or helicopter that was dropping them, but didn't see even a feather from a bird. Then he realized he was also hearing slight thumps from the sea behind him.

Hatz whirled around to see what seemed like the entire Naval fleet position at sea, lobbing shells at the Fanaitalite troops. "About damn time Osafenes showed up!"

Osafenes brought the Headquarter's press team aboard the Drakonera. Fanaitis and the Directorate had their time in the spotlight, and now it was time that Osafenes had his.

"Just so to clear up any confusion, I want to make something clear right off the bat: I am not on the same side as the rest of the Directors, nor am I on Fanaitis's side either. With that said, I would like to explain the stance I am taking and the reason for it. Forty some years ago, our nation was in chaos, and I had convinced myself that an iron hand was needed to secure law and order. My time as Deimonides's right hand man for all of those years put me in a prime position to witness the effects such a style of leadership has.

"It became clear to me that the military has no role in the leadership of a nation. Matters of national security have little direct correlation to public welfare. While the soldiers defend our borders from hostile outsiders, let the economists set fiscal policy, let teachers set educational standards, and let doctors decide the best way to provide healthcare for the citizenry.

"In other words, let us truly embrace those technocratic principles we have always preached about but never truly adhered to.

"I therefor call upon my fellow Directors to renounce their roles as the political leaders of the Tyrric Union and to immediately open up the Koinovoulio to elections in which all citizens of the nation may participate in. I also call upon our men-in-arms on both sides to lay down their weapons and cease fighting."

Despite his declaration of opposition against the Directorate, Osafenes's fleet had yet to take any shots at them. In fact, they had only used their guns to help push back an immenent attempt at taking over Headquarters. What the Directorate took from that was that Osafenes hoped to prolong the battle for the capital. It would make sense that, being unsure of how much support he has under him, that he would not want the Directorate to fall and and himself to become the focus of Fanaitis's attention.

Albeit sketchy, they have managed to put together a profile of the Fanaitalite defectors: the low to middle class soldiers who enlisted because it was the most reliable means to earn an income and put food on the table. Or, perhaps because of patrotism. They enlist thinking that talent will get them ahead and let them climb the ranks. But they inevitably hit an invisible barrier that only the other class of soldiers can pass through. That other class would be the political class, those professing undying loyalty to the regime in order to get ahead. This class, it would seem, still has an ounce of loyalty to the Directorate, if for no other reason than self-preservation -- the fact that Fanaitis's intention to cleanse the military of supporters of the old regime is painfully obvious.

Poor communication and misinformation kept them from mobilizing. The situation in the capital wasn't well known to many, what news got out was always bad on the Directorate's part, and there were constant rumors that the Headquarters had fallen. What the Directorate needed right now was a turnaround in the capital.

And Hatz, for his part, wanted to keep an image of the Directorate leading from the front. Dangerously close to the front enough to prompt a warning from General Idrissi. "This is very risky, you know. We may not be able to you out of there in things go wrong."

"Or I may get shot down on the way," Hatz quipped jokingly. He had to shout it out to be heard over the roar of the helicopter which was to take him to the Koinovoulio, where dozens more helicopters currently in the air were convening over, dropping troops and tanks into the adjacent Kentraro Square as part of an offensive to recapture territory from Fanaitis's troops. Two had been shot down en route by what appeared to be MANPADs. "But its worth the risk."

The Dagroth military forces began to rally, their ally was in chaos and if nothing was done soon it may fall to reformists. As soon as the chaos began Dagroth began to prepare to support whichever ally came out to speak to them. Normally Dagroth would not get involved in the internal politics of another nation, as theirs was often.... violent as well, but in this time when nations were preparing for another great war things needed to be done.

Emperor Servius Vedius Volusus The Enlightened looked upon the dossier of the situation, it appeared that a leader by the name of Osafenes sought to create a technocracy, by way of Democracy. Did this man have any idea what he was saying, a democracy lead to politicians and corrupt leaders not by people who cared for the nation. In Dagroth they were a Meritocracy where the best people in specific fields were given better and greater positions, all the way up to Praetor. Perhaps a meeting could be achieved, and perhaps he could be brought to see the folly of his ways.

"Legate! Send a message to this Osafenes immediatly, I seek a one on one meeting with him, and a cease fire between these forces! Prepare the military for a full scale invasion in case these talks fail. The Tyrric Union must not be allowed to become another Lanlanian Puppet state!"

"Yes Lord Emperor!" The Legate bowed and hurried off to send the message.

Quote:

To: Osafenes, leader of the Reformation
From: Emperor Servius Vedius Volusus The Enlightened

I request a meeting a personal meeting with you, one of one, no one else. I shall bring only a small cadre of guards. I shall head towards your capital city, my contact code it A233-5RT. I also request an immediate cease fire for these talks. I shall arrive within the day.

In the absence of the tech of the War Room, Hatz had to resort to resort to the pre-tech method of rolling out a map on a table and physically drawing in pencil the battle lines.

"I think we can properly call this a civil war now," Hatz reacted to news that several airbases across the country were coming under attack by Fanaitalite forces. Up until now all of the fighting had been concentrated in Tyras, however this morning there had been a dogfight over the city in response to Fanaitalite bombing runs. While it was harrowing to be coming under attack from the air, the other Directors had managed to pull through and scramble some pilots loyal to them to clear the skies. Now the situation has reversed, with Directorate air strikes on Fanaitalite troops constantly throughout the city. This led to the rebel troops to begin an attempt to take the airbases they use to rearm at.

"It seems like our men who've stayed loyal are finally starting to get their act together," said Colonol Janea, commander of the Guards regiment that initiated the Koinovoulio offensive. He just finished the head of the arrow labeling the off-map town of Oansis, situated at the narrow-most point of the peninsula on which Tyras sits at the tip of. Oansis also is bisected by the main highway that connects the capital to the rest of the country. Fanaitis is now cut off from from reinforcements. "I don't know if there were enough shots fired to call it a battle, but taking Oansis will win this for us."

"We've certainly made the turnaround we needed, and in rather short order." Hatz could only partially agree with Janea's assessment, however. "But, you're forgetting one thing: Osafenes."

"Right. It's easy to forget him, he's right there off shore, but just sitting benignly." As if to make a note to himself, he began going over Osafenes's name on the map to bolden the letters.

"If my hunch is right, he will attack who ever he thinks has the edge to keep the fighting here going. The entire navy seems to be under his command still, but that doesn't mean a whole lot given its relative strength to the army and Guards."

"It doesn't give him any capacity to capture and hold much territory, either."

The Dagron Imperial Helicopter, along with a retenue of Airforce helicopters to defend it streamed through Tyrric skies heading towards the capital city of the now civil war strewn nation. The Emperor had already told his team to get no closer then 10 kilometers from the city, any closer was to much risk as the city was aflame.

"Captain, I want to keep open frequencies to any and all radio, and satalite transmissions. Also send a message to Osafenes, we're in position to meet at a location of his choice."

"Yes Lord Emperor!" This was a bit of dangerous diplomacy, going into a wartorn nation to speak with a man that had just claimed for democracy. It was a choice that had to be made none the less. The Zanarite military was years ahead of its neighbors and had many more soldiers. Whoever earned Dagron support was likely to win the war quickly. Not only that but a Deltic and Iron fleet would also aid whoever decided to ally with them.

"I think they have bigger fish to fry at the moment," Osafenes said as he stepped aboard the Stoicheio, the first of a two-ship squadron destined for Orozoi. Major Utraxas, the Foreign Minister of the as of now unannounced Transitional Administration, was concerned that the Directorate or Fanaitis may take advantage of their numbers and attack.

Utraxas stepped on behind him. "I don't see how you can be so... dismissive. We're dividing up our forces, that's the best time for them to attack. We're at our weakest."

"Which is exactly why they won't bother. If your house was broken into by a pair of thieves, one armed and one not, who do you take out?" Osafenes said. "Besides, would they attack us when we have a Dagroth diplomat on board?"

"I guess not. I'll go and send a response to them. Have them come after we've rounded the peninsula, right?"

The cadre of helicopters had landed a few hours ago about 15 kilometers from the city to conserve fuel. Soldiers paced the area as the emperor looked over his dossier on the nation, and what information they had on Osafenes. It appeared he was an Admiral perhaps, and he was involved in the higher echelons of Tyrric government. This revolution almost seemed out of character from what the records showed. One of the soldiers who was manning the communication array runs up to the Emperor.

"Lord Emperor we've received coordinates from Osafenes faction. Shall I prepare us for departure?"

"Yes, we'd best get this meeting going if we're to bring an end to this war in the quickest of manners." The Emperor packed his gear and proceeded to his helicopter as did his men. The blades whirred and soon they were back in the air heading for a fateful meeting with Osafenes, and hopefully a meeting that would keep the IA united together.

The Stocheio and its sister ship kept to its southern course, with the fascist factions either unknowingly or uncaringly letting them go. Now, the Dagroth helicopter had begun easing down on to the flight deck.

"Rather odd that they would come all this way out here to meet us of all people." Utraxas said. "Logically they would be wanting to pressure us, threaten us even, to try and get us to back down. But doing that in person like this is like walking into the wolves den. It's almost like they think you're still on the Directorate's side."

Osafenes laughed. "Makes you wonder if they watch the news, doesn't it?"

The Emperor eited the helicopter, smiling and seeming in many ways a happy man to be arriving on the ship. He waved to a few of Osafenes sailors before walking up to Osafenes himself.

"It is a pleasure to finally meet you, I have looked forward to meeting the true leader of The Tyrric Union for many years." He quickly took Osafenes hand in a firm handshake as several of his men took pictures of the momentous occasion. "We have much to discuss sir, much to discuss. After all you have a war to win right? And wars can get so bloody without the right friends." He looked at his men who were unloading several boxes as the motors slowed to a stop.

"Some gifts for the new ruler, no not ruler, leader of The Tyrric Union. Lets go inside where we can talk in private, one on one as I have requested, yes?" Many more pictureswere taken ofthe two and even one man was writing down every word spoken by The Emperor. The whole scene was very fast and flashy, with the boxes filled with gold and gems. The soldiers stood near the helicopters in neatly pressed uniforms. There weapons hung low in a semi-ready fashion to show non-aggression.

OFFICE OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS
OF HIS MAJESTY KING SOREN II
THE LÄNLANIAN COMMONWEALTH
OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUÉ
SOME DATE GOES HERE

From the Desk of Councilor Harder,

The Commonwealth would like to give it’s condolences to the Tyrric people, who have, unfortunately, found themselves facing a civil war. This conflict, however, is an internal matter concerning solely the Tyrric people.

As a sovereign people, the Tyrric have a right to self-determination, free of foreign influences. Consequently, the Commonwealth will find it unpleasant should any power seek to pursue its aims during this time of strife for the Tyrric people. We will not tolerate any foreign power’s attempts to unjustly affect the outcome of the Tyrric Civil War.

Should any foreign power intervene, in any belligerent or militant capacity, the Commonwealth will not hesitate to assist the Tyrric people in order to protect their right to decide their own fate.

Signed,
Matthew Harder
Councilor of Foreign Affairs
The Länlanian Commonwealth

Halvadag, Länlania
<The same date goes here>

"It's been released," Councilor Harder whispered.

Soren nodded, watching as a spokesperson gave much the same message onscreen. The television was low, though easy to hear in the silent atmosphere of the room. The silence was broken as Soren shifted on the sofa, reaching out to grab his tea cup from the coffee table. "Excellent," he replied. "Let us hope this deters the Iron nations from taking open action."

"Indeed," the older man sighed. He was seated across his king, his own drink in hand. There were a few crumpets on the table, though the aid had only brought enough for Harder; Soren had his cookies, after all. "However, what if it doesn't?"

"You've reached out to our allies, correct?"

"...Yes. You'll go to war over this?"

"Perhaps..." Soren pouted, grabbing a cookie and holding it before his lips. "The odds are in our favor as it is," he mused. "Delaying the inevitable would only give them an opportunity to expand their forces and make it a bloodier battle for us."

Councilor Harder nodded cautiously, taking a sip of his tea. "Quite an aggressive position, your Majesty."

"Indeed... However, it's an improvement from twiddling our thumbs awaiting for them to embolden enough to attack, isn't it?"

Harder raised his eyebrows, taking another drink of tea.

((OOC: Lines shoves this at Osa, goes pig out on cookies and pop. ))

Osafenes kept his quiet through the whole show. He was hoping that Utraxas would step forward and assert himself in his new capacity. He didn't, but Osafenes knew it wasn't from meekness, cowardice, or anything else of the sort. He used to be a Director, Utraxas was just a major, and now they are respectively Defense and Foreign Ministers who are supposed to be on equal footing. Utraxas just needed to be broken in.

Utraxas stuck by Osafenes like a shadow. When they reached the room where the talks, Osafenes made an abrupt u-turn. "This room is secluded enough for you two to talk. In the mean time, I'll go see what our guests have brought us." He took off in the direction they came with a brisk wave over his shoulder.

To the Dagroth Emperor, Utraxas said, "It hasn't quite gone public yet, but we are forming a transitional administration. Admiral Osafenes has volunteered to be the Defense Minister, whereas I am the Foreign Minister." Utraxas held out his hand. "The name is Utraxas."
