"One person's craziness is another person's reality."
-Tim Burton

Have you ever had that moment where you meet someone that claims to see things other people can not?
How about that moment where you read a crazy article by a conspiracy theorist that claims that the government is hiding secrets in Roswell?
And what about that moment where stuff randomly disappears and when confronted by someone, you claim that little gremlins stole those items?

...Okay, maybe that last one was just me. I'm willing to accept that.

What if they were all true though? What if those things that a random "crazy" person claims to see, the secrets of Roswell, and those gremlins actually did exist? On top of that, what if there were a group of people that could actually see them? What if some of these beings love causing chaos and a group of people are working to stop these beings and their allies? Finally, what if this group of people were organized in a global organization?

And now, an FAQ:

Quote:

Q1: What is this concept exactly?
A1: Insanity's Edge is an RP set in the modern world in Oracia, where "fictional folklore" of supernatural beings (known as Oni) and magic are actually scriptures of fact and reality. To the normal human, these beings do not exist and are only seen when their aura becomes visible. However, a select few can see these beings, even when the auras of Oni are not visible to the regular human eye. These people are known collectively as "Eximus". These people have existed from the dawn of history, fighting against these Oni that attempt to create havoc and destruction in our world. Slowly, they found others like themselves and began to work in pairs, triplets, or larger teams. They worked together to fight the Oni and as a result, have become effective at keeping the peace. In the modern day (314), this concept has gone global and has become an international organization known as the Eximus District (ED). People as young as 13 and as old as 50 are able to take part in this society, although special exceptions are made for notable members.

Q2: Are you crazy?
A2: Yes. Next question please.

Q3: How do these "Eximus" fight these Oni exactly?
A3: Just like Oni have magical properties (and auras), so too do the people who fight them. Some Seers use magic spells to aid in their battles and others have taken to the use of the elements instead. Even further, with the rise of technological advances, weapons such as swords and guns have been given magical traits to help destroy these Oni. Keep in mind, regular humans can not see Oni when their souls are hidden, so Seers that fight in front of humans will generally be considered crazy. Also, it then requires wiping the minds of regular humans much in a Men in Black fashion. Seers are not affected by memory wiping equipment due to random genetic codes I just made up.

Q4: What is the Eximus District?
A4: The Eximus District (ED) is an global organization that fights to stop Oni from destroying human society and spreading chaos around the world. The organization is split up into 11 districts (One for each part of the world), each of which has its own chain of command down to each province/state. From this level, jobs are given out to Seers in the region and these Eximus complete these jobs. Upon completion, the Eximus is paid a reward for their involvement in completing the job... and yes, I mean actual cash. Eximus have the right to request certain jobs that appear if they have a specific attachment to it.

Q5: Are all Eximus part of the ED?
A5: Actually, no. Some Eximus have taken the side of the Oni and actively fight to cause chaos. Yes, that is a choice you can make... but it puts you at odds with a global organization that has many members.

Q6: When and where does this story take place?
A6: It will begin to take place in a random Oracian town/city, and the story will potentially expand from there. The members of the squad will live in a house provided by the ED and it will serve as their base to begin with.

Q7: Why is it called Insanity's Edge?
A7: Aha. Finally, the golden question. Insanity is the tradeoff that Eximus must give for their power. When their powers are in active use, insanity starts to build within them. If their power is used for too long, they reach a point called "Insanity's Edge". At that point, one of three things can happen:

  • The Eximus enters a frenzied state where they can't distinguish friend from foe, and will only come out of this state after a certain period of rampage;
  • The Eximus' power stops working, and they are left with no power;
  • If the case is truly severe... the Eximus may turn into an Oni.

There are rumors of a very rare fourth outcome if the conditions are just right in which great power can be found... but these rumors remain unfounded. The main point is that the stronger the power, the more insanity created.

Q8: This seems like fun! I'd love to apply!
A8: Great! The application form is at the end of this FAQ!

Q9: For special abilities, I don't know what to do... can you help?
A9: A special ability is an ability that few Eximus posses. This can be either passive or aggressive. Passive special abilities will often increase a Eximus' performance in battle or their senses. Some examples include increased accuracy, sense Oni from far away, or sense danger coming close. Aggressive special abilities are those that can be used as an attack or as a defense. Examples would be a large force field for a limited time, a blast of aura power, or basically resonating with an Oni's aura and using it against them. There can be up to two passive and one aggressive special abilities. If you want to start out with an extra aggressive special ability, be aware it comes at a major cost. As the story goes on, abilities will be expanded upon and improved.

Q10: Err... I still don't fully understand. Can you explain how to make a special ability?
A10: Yup. An example of an agressive ability would be like this:
  • Aura Scrambler: Allows an Eximus to scramble the aura of an opponent. Does damage to both the opponent and the Eximus. When performed on Oni, it causes them to be revealed to regular humans.

A passive would look more like one of these:
  • Sanctuary: The Eximus has a shroud of white light around them, invisible to humans, barely visible to other Eximus and Oni. People around this "sanctuary" are calmer and are slower to reach "Insanity's Edge". This weakens the Eximus' defense as a result. Can be turned on and off, with great difficulty.
  • Shroud of Secrecy: The Eximus has an aura of secrecy around them, which has two effects. The first is that Oni are less likely to see/sense an Eximus with this special ability, giving them an element of surprise. However, humans are less likely to interact with this Eximus as well, leaving them in a potential state of depression constantly.

Q11: Can I apply as an Oni?
A11: I would prefer if you didn't. When I started this, I agreed to it... but it turned out it was harder for bad guys to have a story when they can't do much but post the chaos they're causing. It does get kind if boring. However, if you desperately want to be an Oni, I might consider opening the application for it later today.

Q12: My question isn't here... but it's a good one!
A12: Either telegram me or post below. I'll be glad to answer any questions.

Name: Silhouette (aka Taxus Mori)
Gender: Male
Age: Unknown. Appears to be around thirty.
Appearance: White male, appears to be in his late twenties or early thirties, often wears a long coat with the collar lifted. Has jet black hair, often brushed backwards, very pale skin and a typical Osivenian nose (just look at that hook!)
Nationality: Osivenian
Allegiance: Oni, seems to be independent.

Power Type: Magical - Shadow Manipulation

Passive Abilities (Please Describe):
Dissimulation - Entering into a darkly shaded area allows him to dissimulate himself within the shadows and recuperate, as well as regenerate his powers. He can decompose himself into a hollow shadow to absorb impacts, blows, etc.

Horror - Being close enough or within the same shadow as Silhouette causes Eximus (or Oni) around him to slowly become insane (or simply horrified for Oni) and hallucinate terrifying specters and shapes.

Aggressive Ability (Please Describe): Can summon shadowy tendrils from... shadows. They can travel out into light, although not very far if the light is intense enough. These tendrils can grab, pierce, throw, or be shot as darts.

Weakness: Light. Being exposed to light diminishes his powers greatly, although he can hold his ground out in light. Just... not for long. He is also weak to fire (it creates light) and electricity (guess why).

Personality: Cynical, humorous, yet cold and calculating.

Bio (1-3 paragraphs):
Not much is known of Silhouette, although several references, such as those including his name, can lead one to believe he is an Osivenian, albeit he lacks the common third name most Osivenians have which may point to him being an immigrant. He takes jobs from clients around the world often involving intrigue and assassination, and has even taken jobs from the ED to hunt Oni. He is known by most of his clients as a regular human, although they wonder how he succeeds in his endeavors.

His lack of apparent insanity leads to his powers often being weaker than they should, although any such illusion of sanity is shattered when he truly makes use of his skills. However, his sane image does often confound him with a human. Most of the time, he keeps his aura visible, an action that tends to cause confusion over him being an actual Oni or simply an Eximus.

Being essentially a regular human the majority of the time, he is mostly solitary and often reads books in libraries or plays the violin. Silhouette is a very learned "person" and is fluent in many languages. His personality may seem to show he has emotion, although this is a facade.

Name: Irimura "Draven" Haviral
Gender: Male
Age (13-24): 21
Appearance: Tan, Purple eyes, Raven black hair.
Nationality: So'Karsan
Species: Human (Cardohesian).

Allegiance: Independent (Soriven Magi)
Choose one of the Following: Magical (Soriven Magic)
Weapon Type: Soriven Spirit Magic
Passive Ability:
Spirit sense (Can detect Oni, Kami, Kaimrin, and Exrimus.)
Aggressive Ability:
Detain (Can contain an Oni to a specific area, if it tries to leave the circle it is effected by a spiritual feedback that damages the Oni.)
Spiritual Disks (Summons 2-5 Floating Disks, each with a unique symbol on it. The disk can either block attacks or be used to blast a beam of spiritual energy, the attack can only harm Oni, Kami, Kaimrin, and Exrimus.)
Weakness: Lack of any physical combat capability, and he must meditate daily or lose his magical ability. Each aggressive ability requires incantations to be spoken to be used.

Personality: Draven is dedicated to cleansing the Oni from the world and rebalancing the physical world and the spiritual world. He often seeks out signs of Oni activity (increase in bugs, odd storms, increased violence in a town.)
Bio (1-3 paragraphs): Draven was born in a small town in So'Karsa. His family were dedicated Soriven faithful and the town had a large shrine to an ancient Kami spirit. At the age of five the High Priest of the shrine selected Draven to become a Magi for the faith.

He trained for 15 years learning incantations, spells, and ceremonies. He learned of the danger of Oni and what the duty of a Magi was. He had lived at the temple for nearly his whole life and now he was sent out to find and purify the Oni of the world.
