Opposition Forces Toward a Real Political Unity
The Dúchaish Post

In a historical hotel of the city of Laidirlár, around two hundred political representatives from all the country, most of them from the Dúchaish unionist National Democratic Alliance for Talamhle Chéile, gathered in order to discuss one more step toward the unity of the opposition against President Tardhealbhach's policies.

Although many predicted that the right-wing coalition could collapse as consequence of the defeat in the last State elections -where the candidates of the National Democratic Alliance were defeated in all the four federal states-, it seems it happened the contrary. The Unitary Democratic Convention, as it was called, were organized by the party members of the coalition, the historical Freedom Party and the National Liberal Party, former members of conservative Democrats for Talamhle Chéile, and a delegation from the Republican Democratic Alliance, a split from the Republican Democratic Party, led by Lachina Ruarch, recently elected as Governor of the State of Glaschmeath.

A picture of the Convention

The 207 delegates accepted to join forces in an only centralized political party, and they also agreed in an unitary political platform. The political program, which draft was proposed by Faolán Ultan, Seanán Nuallán, and former President Brogan Leary, defines the policies of the new political organization as socially liberal-conservative, fiscal conservatism, emphasize the role of the free-market in national economy, administrative centralization, and parliamentary control of federal policies, as its core principles. United Dúchaish Party was accepted as the name of the new political parties, as other names were proposed as 'Dúchaish Democratic Party', 'National Dúchaish Party', or 'Centrist Alliance for Talamhle Chéile'.

Brogan Sweeney was elected as the President of the new organization, while Faolán Ultan was proposed as the First Secretary , although the latter should be confirmed during the political convention of the party, to be organized during the new weeks. However, they didn't agree to choose a new candidate for the next Presidential Elections -311-, and the candidate will be chosen in the first congress of the United Dúchaish Party, to be held during the next months.

More Anti-Länlanian Protests in Larnach
The Dúchaish Post

The Anti-Länlanian Movement, which opposes the construction of military bases of this East Urocan country in our country, seems growing, specially in the Larnach Island. According to recent polls, while 54% are opposed of such military bases nationwide, in the Larnach Island the rejection increase until 77%. Last weekend, the country witnessed the biggest demonstration since the so-called 'Crisis of Glas', in a massive march in the State of Laidirghan, not far from where a Länlanian base is being built. Thousands of demostrators gathered in the city of Dhargaràm, peacefully although expressing the anger.

Posted Image

Although the center-right United Dúchaish Party, which opposes Länlanian influence, didn't support officially the protests, some of its local leaders, although not all, attended the demonstration. Meanwhile, the Republican Democratic Party and the far-left Socialist Party are increasing their influence in the movement. This movement, combined with the economic situation, seems a problem for the ruling Federal Democratic Movement, which is losing its popularity in recent polls. According to the last one, it could even lost the second place in the State of Laidirghan against the radical Socialist Party. The next year the country will have its second Presidential Elections, and President Tardhealbhach should convince many if he really is looking for his reelection.

"Civilians," Soren murmured, watching the screen. "They're never satisfied, are they?"

"Indeed," Justin returned.

The Länlanian King nodded, sighing slightly. "Our bases do nothing to them--hell, they wouldn't even know they were there, if we weren't feeding them vast sums of money." He growled, slumping back against the couch; he bumped into Justin's back again, and, as usual, the Councilor pushed back. "And they dare complain about our influence..."

Justin chuckled, turning around and planting a hand on his nephew's head. "You're rather upset."

"This is ridiculous, Justin," Soren barked. "I'm under enough stress dealing with the rest of the world; I don't need to be snapped at by petty civilians of some minute nation."

The Councilor sighed, ruffling up the younger man's hair. "Not much can be done about it. I certainly don't support withdrawing from that state--"

"And I certainly don't intend to."

"Right. We can do little beyond ignore it, perhaps slip some more funds into the government's hands and encourage it, to... keep the situation silent."

Soren nodded. "Yes. Keep it silent..."

((OOC: Let's pretend Länlania offers your government a couple more hundred million a year, to ensure the media doesn't report much on this, and perhaps even keep foreigners away from it. ;P))

Tensions in the Government over New Fishing Agreement
The Talamhle Chéile Herald

The Fishing Agreement between Talamhle Chéile and a Zaran nation ends this year. The agreement was signed during the joint NLP-FP Government, before the start of the so-called Crisis of Glas. In fact, the agreement was signed by Faolán Ultan, who today is an important member of the opposition United Dúchaish Party. Many things have changed since them. Although the Fishing Agreement established the preferential negotiations in order to renew or not the agreement, this option seems unlikely. Disagreement between both side were lately too important, as the foreign nation demanded a economic compensation as consequence of the lower activity during the conflict in the Glas Island, while our previous Government rejected such demand. An International Jury confirmed the Federal Republic of Talamhle Chéile position so, although recent diplomatic talks have improved relations between both countries again, a renewal of the agreement is unlikely. However, the Fishing Agreement has proved quite beneficial for both side, at least from the economic point of view.

According to our sources from the Ministry of Agriculture, several foreign Government are interested to enter in negotiations in order to discuss a new Fishing Agreement, but that issue is being proved a controversial one inside both the Government and the ruling Federal Democratic Movement. While organizations of local fishers have demanded a bigger economic compensation if a new agreement is discussed, many inside the F.D.M. supports a new agreement, which could increase the budget of the Federal Republic. For example, Prime Minister Lorcán Cuinn has declared that the agreement was beneficial for the national economy, while he also said that the Government is still studying the proposals, and no decision has been taken. On the other hand, some voices inside the Federal Democratic Movement -specially the Green Party members- are opposed to a new fishing agreement, at least if the terms are similar to the ending one. The agreement has been severely criticized by environmentalist activists, as it has endangered the survival of many local sea species, according to them. During the new weeks we could see if this issue is really a divisive one for the ruling coalition, just 11 months before the Presidential Elections.

Republican Leader passes away
The Northern Press

Certainly, a sudden end for one of the oldest members in the Dáil. Rónán Aodhagán, the President and leader of the radical Republican Democratic Party has passed away. Aodhagán, 65, was diagnosed a cancer recently and, although his family was optimistic, the death surprised him today, in a private hospital of the capital city. He was a member of the Parliament since 283 and he was elected as President of the RDP in 294, being Presidential Candidate for the elections of 297, 304, and 307. An authoritarian politician, he revitalized the party, a marginalized and extra-parliamentary organization when he joined it, although he failed to be a real alternative.

Under the leadership, the Republican Democratic Party -which considers itself as the heir of the historical National Republican Party- focused in mostly three issues: an anti-establishment populist rhetoric, anti-immigration discourse, and a discourse critical of foreign influence in our country. Opposed to the recent constitutional reform of former President Lorcán Cuinn, and the increasing role of the Glas-separatist PDP, the RDP obtained his first and only electoral victory since its foundation in the last State Election when Lachina Ruarch, the RDP candidate, was elected Governor of the State of Glaschmeath. But it was a pyrrhic victory, as Ruarch left the party, as consequence of differences with the leadership of the RDP -specially with Aodhagán himself- and he formed the Republican Democratic Alliance, a split from Aodhagán's party. Aodhagán had harsh words for Ruarch, describing as "an opportunist and a traitor". Ruarch joined later the center-right United Dúchaish Party, as we all know.

Aodhagán was very critical of the recent Länlanian influence in our country, and party members burned publically flags from that country in the last protests against the Länlanian military presence in our coasts. The RDP was an active part of the movement, but it's not clear what could happen now as consequence of Aodhagán's death. Divided as consequence of the Glaschmeath's split, and only six months before the Presidential Elections, the Republican Democratic Party lacks a candidate and a leader right now. Some predict that the party could disappear in the next years, while others alert about a likely radicalization of the party. In any case, his death of this marginal politician will change probably the national politics of Talamhle Chéile.

Representatives from the Parliament and most of the federal political parties have sent message of condolences, although noting the deep differences they kept -and still keep- with the politics of Rónán Aodhagán and his movement.

Only Four Months Before the Presidential Elections, Uncertainty Increases
The Talamhle Chéile Herald

A year ago, President Tardhealbhach seemed to face an easy reelection in the second Presidential Elections, to be organized in February 311. But things have changed considerably. The recent corruption cases, which involved several members of the ruling Federal Democratic Movement, specially members of the Freedom Party which had political responsabilities during the Government of the today Prime Minister Lorcán Cuinn. Such scandals, which forced Naomhán Thuaidheim -the Minister of Education and Culture- to resign, combined with the stagnant economic situation, have put the Government in a difficult situation. Prime Minister Lorcán Cuinn, has rejected any relation with such cases, but his personal situation remains difficult. In the last polls, the ruling FDM is placed in third place, after the United Dúchaish Party and the Socialist Party, and the options for President Tardhealbhach for a second term looks gone, quite unlikely.

Meanwhile, the United Dúchaish Party isn't in a so good position as it should. Some members of this party, former members of Brogan Leary and Lorcán Cuinn's cabinets as Dalách Turlough are also involved in other corruption scandas as the so-called Tadesgám Case. However, the candidate of the United Dúchaish Party Brogan Sweeney, former Secretary of Administrative and Civil Affairs is still the favourite for the elections. But Sweeney, considered a moderate although dull politician, won't have an easy victory.

Surprisingly, the candidate of the far-left Socialist Party will be a serious contender. Damhnait Fionnagáin, the only woman candidate, was elected as candidate of the party, and she's likely to share a similar amount of votes of the today President Eachann Tardhealbhach. Fionnagáin was even supported as candidate by the National Federation of Workers Unions and the Independent Trade Union, two of the most important trade unions of the country. The Socialist Party demands more intervention of the State in the economy, an increase of taxes, and it's quite critical of the influence of the Länlanians.

Other radical and new political options are growing, as the populist The Citizens List, led by former journalist Torin Woodley. They won't have real options in the Presidential Elections, but they could play an important role in the next Dáil Elections, in 312. On the other hand, the far-right Republican Democratic Party seems collapsing, according to recent polls, just after the death of its leader, the controversial Rónán Aodhagán.

Special Report - Presidential Elections: Surprising Victory of Socialist Candidate
The Talamhle Chéile Herald

After a disputed electoral victory, Damhnait Fionnagáin, 45, the candidate of the Socialist Party will be the next President of the Republic. Fionnagáin, who will be the first female President and Head of State in the history of our nation, obtained 276,181 votes (less than 33% of the votes), just a few thousands votes more than her main rival, the candidate of the center-right United Dúchaish Party, the experienced Brogan Sweeney. President Tardhealbhach could only obtained the third position, with less than a 15% of the votes. Tardhealbhach has congratulated the Socialist candidate, although hoping she would be a prudent and wise President, and he has resigned as President of the Social Democratic Party, while he'll continue -at least temporary- in the Executive Committee of the still ruling Federal Democratic Movement. Tardhealbhach couldn't achieve the reelection, which seemed quite likely just a year ago, but the economic situation and the recent corruption cases affecting the ruling coalition has decread considerably his popularity.

Fionnagáin, a former lawyer, entered in national politics in 303, when she was elected member of the Dáil as a independent candidate, although campaigning jointly with the far-left Radical Alliance. A year later, she joined the Social Democratic Party and she was promoted as Secretary of Culture in the first Government of President Tardhealbhach, just a few days after the Social Democratic Party candidate won the 307' elections. But she resigned from her position a year later, claiming "ideological differences with the political project of the President", as she dissaproved the alliance between the SDP and Lorcán Cuinn's Freedom Party and considered President's policies as "too moderate and centrist". Everyone, we included, considered such decision sectarian and anecdotical, but just three later, that young and unknown politician has inflicted a humiliating defeat to her former leader. Fionnagáin, along with other leftist members of the party, left the Social Democratic Party and founded the "Social Workers Alliance". Some months later, they merged with the Socialist Democratic Party (another split from the SDP) in a new political party: the Socialist Party.

Fionnagáin and the Socialist Party have campaigned by a simple but succesful political program, with includes more intervention of the State in the economy, more progressive taxes and raising the minimum salary, and denouncing the Länlanian influence in our country. The Socialist Party has participated in the recent anti-Länlanian protests, which is opposed to the military bases, approved by President Tardhealbhach and his Government. However, Fionnagáin's promises should wait, as the Socialist Party has only five members in the Parliament. There will be new Parliamentary Elections in a year, but it's not clear what could happen meanwhile. We only hope the Talamhle Chéile's People won't have to regret this election too soon.

Lonán Tierney, New Prime Minister
The Talamhle Chéile Herald

Former Minister of Internal Security, Lonán Tierney, will be the new Prime Minister, after days of negotiations between the main parliamentary forces. Tierney, 56, was the only independent member without political affiliation during the Government of President Tardhealbhach (307-311). The new Government, led by Prime Minister Tierney, will be formed by mostly independent ministers, and three members of the Federal Democratic Movement, as consequence of an agreement between the FDM and the center-right United Dúchaish Party.

Meanwhile, Maeve Sléibhtiúil was confirmed as new Chairman of the Seanad. Sléibhtiúil will be the only Socialist Party member of the Upper House, which will be in minority in both chambers at least until next year Dáil's Elections and 313' State Elections. Sléibhtiúil was member in the Dáil between 299 and 303, as candidate of the Green Party.

As Parliamentary Is Coming, Political Parties Gather In New Electoral Coalitions
The Talamhle Chéile Herald

With the Dáil Elections in less than ten months, the main political parties are already prepared but this important political battle. President Damhait Fionnagáin and her party, the Socialist Party, will try to gain the control of the Government in order to promote her leftist policies. Meanwhile, the United Dúchaish Party, as most part of Fionnagáin's Opposition, will try to keep its control of the Parliament, in order to resist the power of the Socialist Party. The first clashes have already taken place, with the recently passed controversial new Electoral Law for Parliamentary and State Elections, which the President failed to block against the votes of the Dáil and Seanad. The law, designed in order to be detrimental to the aspirations of the Socialist Party and others radical political parties, was even defined as a "constitutional coup d'etat" by prominent members of Fionnagáin's party.

The leadership of the Socialist Party seems conscious of the importance of the next elections, and it has started to modify its political strategy. Last weekend, Maeve Sléibhtiúil, has announced that the party has achieved a agreement with other left-wing and radical organizations to create a widen electoral coalition, which will be called the "Left Front". It will include the Socialist Party, Radical Democrats, the so-called Grassroot Movement for a New Democracy, and the Federalist Action Group, and other minor ultra-left organizations. The new political coalition has also the support of at least one the important trade unions confederations. Meanwhile, the Federal Democratic Movement, which continues without a public leader, has announced that the Party of the Autonomous Provinces -a political party based in the Ceangailte and Pointe Islands, which demands more autonomy for those territories, will join the centrist coalition, which continues to fall in the polls since the last electoral defeat.

Governor Naomhán Gréasaí, pressured by corruption cases
The Northern Press

Naomhán Gréasaí, Governor of the State of Glaschféin and leader of the nationalist People's Democratic Party of the Island of Glas is in a difficult political situation, as consequence of the several corruption scandals which is affecting his party and former members of his Goverment. The PDP had denounced in recent months such cases as "politically motivated", but with Fionnagáin elected as President, such ridiculous declarations seem even more absurd, as the Socialist Party was often an ally of Gréasaí's Government in the State Parliament. Now, the Socialist Party has retired its support to Governor Gréasaí, while the PDP is losing the support of its voters, tired of the corruption of the Regional Government.

Special Report: Dáil Elections - Socialists Wins Elections, but Fails to Secure a Majority
The Talamhle Chéile Herald

The official results gave the victory to the Left Front -led by the President Fionnagáin's Socialist Party- but insufficient in order to form a new Government. The radical Left Front obtained 352,709 votes (36.78%), while the center-right United Dúchaish Party obtained 320,859 votes (33.46%). The center-left Federal Democratic Movement had a disappointing result again, but at least it could retain the third position against the populist 'Citizens List', led by former journalist Torin Woodley. As consequence, the most likely outcome will be the formation of an Anti-Socialist Government or, probably, a continuation of the Independent Government of Lonán Tierney, the current Prime Minister and former Minister of Internal Affairs during the Government of former President Eachann Tardhealbhach.

Odharnait Dohndubhán, First Secretary of the Socialist Party, declared that she hoped that "the voice of the Talamhle Chéile's People will be heard and left-wing Government could be approved with the approval of both the President and the Parliament". Meanwhile, members of the United Dúchaish Party, although disappointed with the result, they consider the result means a "lose of confidence of President's policies" and "the beginning of "Fionnagáin's decline". Negotiations between parliamentary forces will begin in the next days, in order to choose a Prime Minister or confirm Lonán Tierney in his position.

President Could Be Considering Referendum on Länlanian Issue
The Calfort D'Aios Daily Times

It's obvious that President Fionnagáin is not living her happiest days since she was elected President of the Republic. The last Dáil Elections were supposed to mark the transitions between the presidencies of Eachann Tardhealbhach and Damhait Fionnagáin, but the outcome of the elections was an unexpected one. Although the new Prime Minister Tierney's Government included two members of the Left Front (in influential positions as Minister of Defense and Minister of Foreign Affairs, in fact), this haven't changed the situation. The divided Dáil is incapable to pact even the minor law, and the recently failed National Budget is a proof of this. In this context, despite having a Socialist candidate elected as President of the Republic and being the most voted political force in the last parliamentary elections, the left-wing coalition is being unable to fullfil its political program and the electoral promises that inspired thousands of voters.

Former Presiddent Tardhealbhach had never had a real majority but he hadn't real problems to enact most of his policies. But the radicalization of the United Dúchaish Party and the increase of populist forces such as Torin Woodley's platform had become such plan impossible. So the Socialist Party could be considering to recover one of the issues which helped to achieve the power: his opposition of the Länlanian influence in our country. Members of the opposition have criticized such opposition as opportunistic, certainly. But that's not really true: it was already a central part during Fionnagáin's campaign, a year ago. Not the central or only one, probably, but still an important one. However, until today, only local members of the Socialist Party were willing to talk openly about the posibility that the agreements signed with the Länlanian could be rejected, by the Parliament or by national referendum. Today, in the Political Conference of the Socialist Party in Calfort D'Aios, the First Secretary of the Socialist Party, Odharnait Dohndubhán broke such silence, when she was asked by a group of journalist about the current political situation and the position of the Socialist Party and its allies in the Left Front.

In first place, she was asked about the conflict between President Fionnagáin and Prime Minister Tierney. "It's not a secret we're disappointed with this issue, as many citizens of the Republic are", she said. "We respect Mr. Tierney but he's neither a member of the Dáil neither of the Seanad. Nobody voted for him, and most of the voters couldn't expect he would continue as Prime Minister the next day following the parliamentary elections. The majority of the Dáil decided so, though, and President Fionnagáin agreed after discussing the issue with the rest of parliamentary forces. The constitutional order allows it, which we respect, although some changes could be considered in the future, if the Parliament and the citizens decided so".

When a journalist asked her if the Socialist Party was changing its position about the so-called "Länlanian Issue", Dohndubhán rejected such claims. "The Socialist Party has always defended Talamhle Chéile's sovereignty, so we haven't changed our position", she declared. "It's not we don't recognize some deal signed by our State. We do, as we recognize and respect international law. But such agreement was signed, as we all know, in secret and quite special circumstances. Our people was never asked and that's why we opposed such agreement since the beginning". When asked how that could be done, she declared that the "the Constitution allows the President to organize a referedum even if the Parliament disagrees, in order to just know the citizen's opinion about any issue. It's not the only possibility, there are another options, but it could be done in this way", she assured. "No, this shouldn't be considered any kind of threat, but we consider that there is not anything wrong in asking citizens its opinion about any issue...Let ask them their opinion and let them decide...That's how democracy works, and we shouldn't be afraid of that. The Socialist Party isn't, at least", she declared.

According to sources of this newspaper, Donhdubhán's words aren't an isolated declaration or any kind of rethorical play. There's
already a draft of such refendum and President Fionnagáin could be considering it very seriously. Should the people decide about this important issue? Well, we'll see the outcome very soon, it seems.

Minister of Finance Resigns as DGB Situation Become Unsustainable
The Dúchaish Post

Logan Kennán, Minister of Finance has resigned adducing important differences with Prime Minister Lonán Tierney and Talamhle Chéile's banking authorities, mostly about the management of the situation of the Dúchaish General Bank (DGB). The first suspicions that the DGB could face some problems were the sudden resignation of five executives of the private bank just four weeks ago. The DGB is the second most important private in the country, but unlike the Talamhle Chéile National Bank and the Charis Jintikian Bank is mostly focused in the domestic economic, specially the mortgage sector. However, the bank had been recently adquiring loans from foreign banks, as the Deputy Minister of Finance declared in press release last Monday. Last year, the DGB had declared earnings of $500 million, but in fact the bank is likely to have a financial hole of between $1.5 and $5 billion.

Mr. Kennán's initial plan was to shut down quickly the DGB, but this was interrupted as soon as it emerged that DGB had falsified its accounts between it and a second bank, Dúchaish Investment, with uncovered circular transactions. The chief executive of Dúchaish Investment has already resigned. In that situation, Kennán, with Prime Minister Tierney's approval, decided and announced the recapitalisation of the bank. But it proved that such decision was no longer a serious option and the Federal Republic announced at the end of the week that it was to become the majority shareholder of the bank by injecting $7 billion into the bank, which became nationalized. Kennán declared he didn't really like the decision, but there was not real alternative. But the differences with the Prime Minister had increased since then and Kennán finally announced his resignation as Minister of Finance.

President Fionnagáin has already announced that she will cancel her agenda, and she's currently in a meeting with the Prime Minister and the rest of the Government.

Economic Crisis Turns into A Political One
The Talamhle Chéile Daily Herald

Just three months after the last Dáil Elections, the Dúchaish citizens will vote again in a parliamentary elections, as President Fionnagáin has called for early elections. Fionnagáin justified her decision in" the division of the parliamentary forces, the new political situation as consequence of the recent banking crisis and the demands of the people". 48 hours before, she had pressured Lonán Tierney to resign as Prime Minister. Tierney failed to estabilize the situation, being forced to nationalize both the DGB and the Talamhle Chéile National Bank, the latter when Mortgage Operations was declared bankrupt (being the Talamhle Chéile National Bank its majority shareholder). Meanwhile, the national stock market continues to decrase its value. Lorcán Cuinn was elected as Prime Minister, after a tense session of the Dáil. He had the support of the main opposition parties, although most member of the Left Front just abstained.

Socialist Government Announces Controversial Reforms
The Talamhle Chéile Daily Herald

The new Socialists-led Government, recently formed after the left-wing Left Front obtained a enough majority a month ago, is likely to pass a series of ambitious and controversial reforms. This includes a new Electoral Law, which members of the opposition have already defined it as "constitutional but anti-democratic coup d'etat", and constitutional reforms including general and justice administration, education, and social policy. The recently elected Prime Minister Fintan Rórdán has promised that he will try to negotiate such reforms with both the opposition and the Governors of the States, none of them belong to the radical coalition. However, he declared that the Government will not afraid to use its relative majority in the Parliament, when it's needed. In any case, he assured that the main priority of his Government will be the improvement of the economic situation.

In order to achieve this, Rórdár announced the Economic Recovery Plan, which aims to improve the national economy for the next three years. The Plan includes an increase of taxes (including a income and wealth tax at 60-80% for the high classes), a fiscal and monetary stimulus, the creation of a public bank, and increasing the regulation in the banking system as a whole. The Plan also includes the nationalization of a few national and foreign companies. The Government justified such measure as it will avoid the increasing of the unemployment, and it could activate the national economy. "Talamhle Chéile's economy will be a much more productive one", the new Minister of Finance declared. Several Länlanian, Jandrean, and Deltorian factories and office were already officially nationalized, and their buildings and assets in the country taken. The Opposition has criticized that such measure will destroy the national economy, but Rórdán insisted that they're justified and necessary. Although the public debt is already around 120% of the GDP as consequence of the recent bail-out of the banking sector, the Government trusts that they "will not have a negative effect in neither the national economy nor the state treasure, more the contrary", as Prime Minister Fintan Rórdán declared.
