"Yes, well..." Osmeiss began "...we understand you wish to help found a civilian government on the island and remain to protect it until such time as it can do so itself." His face hardened a bit "I also saw your interview were you stated you would wish for them to become a member of your Commonwealth. My bosses are a bit concerned about that last point but I'm guessing it'll be kinda pointless arguing that. So long as our waters remain unmolested there shouldn't really be a problem, at least in my opinion. My main concern is what to do with my forces here on the island." He handed the Lanlanian general a small map with 3 dots on it, translated into Lanlanian. "These are our main bases of operations here along the North-Western coast (OOC: around Dandelion). It is our wish to keep a small force in these bases until were sure the new government is stable and non hostile. A battalion of men with naval, air, and land access for patrols and resupply. Mostly it would just be to keep on eye on the area. Command of the force would go to Colonel Edic." He smiled wearily "Now...what are your bosses going to think of that?" "My boss is a realistic man," Dresden answered with a grin, reviewing the map. Their demands were a bit lighter than expected, though he certainly wasn't about to share that. On the contrary... "Your demands are reasonable," he said with a light chuckle. "However, I believe it would be ideal--for all parties--if you would centralize your facilities... "The Crown is attempting to keep the situation low, concerning the events that transpired around your forces here over the campaign," he added, slyly. "I don't believe the local population would be too satisfied, having those responsible present on their island. It would be easier for the Commonwealth to get their cooperative, if you would minimize your presence. "The Commonwealth has no problem with granting you the requested facilities," he continued. "However, we might run into trouble in the future, should the locals... remember the crimes done against them. They might not be willing to accept a major Adehnite presence on their island. If you would minimize it, we just might be able to downplay the entire situation, and get the Sabinite's on board." |

"Yeah," Osmeiss said, sighing "I agree with you there. My government wishes to assure you that a 'thorough' investigation is being conducted over this 'Intelligence Issue'. Rest assured the Colonel will be more than co-operative on that front." He pulled out another map, this one still in rune, and began to jot down some quick Jandean (he hoped it was readable). "My idea is to simply build a base here at the coast, along the very north-west edge. We'd move our forces there and turn the other bases over to the locals or to your forces, whichever you prefer. Our new base would be out of the way, have a small set of docks of ships to resupply us, and a good number of landing pads. Beyond a few ships and helicopters the locals should scarcely notice us. I can't guarantee my superiors will agree to it but I planned to push for this anyway. It's just much easier, all things considered." |

Dresden reviewed the map carefully, noting the requested location. It was in the north; what could the Adehnites want with a facility pointed in that direction? "That location is acceptable," he said cautiously. "However, I believe quotas should also be discussed. In order to minimize your force's signature, perhaps it would be best to limit it's size to, say, two-thousand total? Including logistics and maintenance personnel. "It should be enough for to run and operation a small port, a minute airfield, and a few long-range missile launchers, as well as a sufficient size force to secure your facilities. I'm sure that sufficient for whatever your reasoning for remaining is." |

"Yeah that's about what I was thinking too." Osmeiss said, jotting down some notes on a pad. "Alright then, I think we're both pretty much in agreement here." With that he sat up and gave a small bow before shaking the other General's hand. He had a tired but genuine smile on his face. "Well I have to go hope on a plane to get yelled at, but let me say on behalf of all our forces that it has been an honor working with you and yours. I wish you the best of luck with rebuilding this place and I hope our forces continue to get allow as well as they have so far." As he turned to leave he stopped and then turn back around. "Oh...and I saw what you've renamed the capital. Nessan was an old House friend and I think he would have been very honored. Thank you." |

Halvadag, Länlania June 16, 307RE "What's the situation in Sabine?" Soren asked, several older men gathered around him, circling the wooden table. They'd been squeezed into the Palace Conference Room, the higher ranks of the the Commonwealth Armed Forces Command. Maps lay across the table, though one of Sabine had been projected onto the screen a few meters in front of Soren. The air was thick, not one of the gentlemen--some dressed in Peerage clothes, others simply in military uniforms--taking their eyes off their young King. "The pirates have collapsed," Dresden stated, meeting the King's eyes, despite being thousands of miles away. Small monitors rested before each person in the room, though Soren was certain his was the only one connected to Dresden at that moment. "Completely?" the king questioned. "Their organized resistance, yes," Dresden answered. "Of course, some martyrs believe it wise to continue resistance." "And the people?" "Have generally accepted out presence as better than the pirates," the man answered. "They're not speaking out against us." "Liable to change," a voice murmured in the background. "Perhaps we should take steps to prevent that?" The King looked upwards to the officer, a slight smile on his face. "Länlanian blood was not shed for naught, man," the king said. "Neither do I intend to install a ruthless regime, of course." "Then?" Soren glanced at his Councilor of Länlanian Affairs, who proceeded to pass out dossiers to all men and women present. Like Duke Hanell, Garde had also been replaced. The new Länlanian Affairs Councilor was a young woman, just breaking her thirties. She was one of the lesser nobles, a Count, Soren believed. He'd honestly given her the job as he felt her best for it, not due to rank. Operation Bluebird had been her brainchild. The King glanced down at his copy of the documents and smiled. Sabine would be Länlanian. |

Nessandag, Sabine August 14, 307 RE Dresden stared at the documents scattered on his desk, the various status reports flowing in from each corner of the island. Things were silent, except in the corner where the pirates decided to stage a perpetual resistance, near Dandelion. It wasn't far, and it movement wasn't large. Unfortunately, the Crown had withdrawn most of the troops brought over. He wasn't sure why--it was unthinkable for Länlania to not commit full forces--but he wasn't one to question his king. Consequently, that put him in the uncomfortable position of being undermanned, with a rebellion stirring in the northwest, and a population who, at best, felt uneasy. The Commonwealth hadn't expected to be hailed as heroes--indeed, things were going as was expected, with the Sabinians being entirely unsure what to feel. And that's where Count Leroux's operation comes in, he was told. Already, the material was being flown in from the Motherland, being stockpiled in military storehouses. Some of it was already being shipped across the island, to the planned sites. More was due to fly in, however; there were many sites. The Economic Recovery of Sabine, one of the major points of Operation Bluebird. To curtain favor with the natives, many factories and plants were to be constructed--at the Commonwealth's cost--to provide the population with industrial jobs, preparing the island for an export economy. Of course, it went unsaid that most of those goods would be exported to Länlania, at least in the beginning. Dresden glanced back over the operation. Economic recovery, public relations, cultural assimilation. The woman reached broadly. |

November 19, 307 RE Nessandag, Sabine Daniel Thomson was tired. For the last four month, ever since the Länlanians announced the date for the elections, he'd been working feverishly to ensure it was his name that came out on top. The Länlanians had allowed anyone to run, granting each recognized runner--one who'd the support of at least 100 peers--the funds and reach to be heard across the island. Indeed, it hadn't been too expensive. Televisions were still the exception, radio dominating the scene. From five to eight in the evening, for three months straight, the people were subjected to constant ads and debates between the runners. Initially, it had been fourteen of them; by the end, it'd been Daniel standing against another man. Their policies and opinions were polar opposites, one speaking for the Commonwealth, the other denouncing them as conquerors. In the end, under the watchful eye of regional observers, Daniel achieved victory by an eight percent margin. By sheer voice and luck and charisma, Daniel won the office of Governor of Sabine. And he intended to use it well, too. Over the last few months, the Commonwealth had trained and equipped both an army and a police force. The Sabinians would be able to join the fray against the brigands that long held them beneath a black boot. Indeed, as Governor, one of the first issues brought before his desk was a Länlanian proposal for a joint assault on the last remaining pirate stronghold. Sabinians would stand strong again. |

Outskirts of Dandelion, Sabine, December 25, 307 "Is James ready?" "Last I heard he was." The first man nodded, collapsing back into his seat and crossing his arms on the grand desk in front of him. Behind him hung a portrait of the late Western Pirate King, who'd been killed by Länlanian special forces. Across the table stood his life-long friend, who'd stayed by his side since the clan was forced into hiding by the Länlanians. Following their military defeat, the pirates had been reduced to little more than a thorn in the Commonwealth's side. "Damn him. We needed that bomb to go off last week." His friend nodded passively, looking out the room's open window. A cold breeze streamed through, carrying the scent of midnight with it. A firefly flew in moments later, and arched across the room, before focusing in and circling the light bulb. "He told me that the security was too heavy. That he couldn't get into a good position." "Bullshi--" a gun went off in the distance; both of them quickly recognized the heavy, steady rhythm of the Länlanian 35mm chaingun. More gunfire followed, as the pirates engaged the Länlanian ground drones. "Shit. They're here." The second man nodded, racing towards the door where his assault rifle leaned against the wall. He didn't make it. The firefly descended towards the center of the room, where it began to circle wildly in a small circle. Within moments, a cruise missile broke through the ceiling and sent the room aflame. Around the pirate stronghold, more missiles exploded as Commonwealth and Sabine troopers converged on the forest thicket. |

Nessandag, Sabine, January 08, 308 "Would you like to join the Commonwealth, Mr. Thomson?" Daniel stared at the young man across him, smiling from behind the computer screen. The operation two weeks earlier had been an overwhelming success--the pirates collapsed beneath the combined air-and-land assault. Some had attempted to escape the killing ground, only to run into the wall of troops that had been deployed around it. It was estimated that over eighty-percent of the pirates were captured or killed that day. And it was all thanks to the Länlanians too. The question hadn't taken him by complete surprise. He knew that the Commonwealth would extend it eventually. They'd already showed him their reconstruction plans--they were neither minor nor cheap. Such an investment wouldn't go without a bill to the Sabinians as well. What took him by surprise, however, was that it was posed so soon. "Already?" Daniel questioned, shaking his surprise away. "No," Soren answered. "Not yet. As the pirates have been dealt with, we might be able to transfer most of the island's security-keeping operation to local governance. Of course, our troops would still remain, though in limited numbers, and mainly to serve a support role... the Commonwealth will soon recognize your government." Daniel nodded steadily, looking at the Länlanian King suspiciously. "Why do you do this?" "We seek to help you, Mr. Thompson. What the Commonwealth seeks on your island are simply facilities to allow us to operate in the region. As long as that need is met, we'd be more than happy to watch as you island governs itself. I merely extend the hand of membership so that your state shan't be left in the cold.... "Right now, you shall be a protectorate, if you agree, of course. You'll be protected by the Commonwealth, and allow us to conduct diplomacy in your stead. Basing and operation rights are also granted to us with the treaty. However, as we'd handle your diplomacy, most international trade would be through us... something that wouldn't hold if you become a memberstate." "And if we reject your treaty?" "You will not be recognized and the occupation of your state will continue." Daniel scowled, blinked twice. "I'd like a copy of it." |

Nessandag, Sabine 314, November 13 He was a great man. Born to Robert and Wilma Thomson in 252, Daniel Thomson grew up an old child. He’d a single sibling—his elder sister, Rebecca, who was raped and killed by local pirates when he was only six. Her death shook the family, which was already barely scrapping by in the lawless Sabinian economy. At age ten, Daniel joined his father in a local munitions factory—producing the shells that the Western Pirate Crew would use to plague the Iryiiad Sphere. The pirates attempted to recruit him when he was sixteen though Daniel staunchly refused—earning both himself and his father a beating on the spot. To add insult to injury, they were then fired on the spot, before being dragged out of the factory grounds. It was then that Daniel promised to eradicate the pirate problem and work for a better Sabine. Unfortunately, the government of the island at the time was heavily corrupt, essentially eating out of the pirates’ hands. His attempts to speak out against the piracy and demand change only ensured his home was burned and his parents killed. He fell off the radar afterwards. To date, no one knows where Daniel disappeared to during this time—neither has he admitted or confirmed any rumors. Some believe that he returned to being a factory worker, others believe he became a beggar on the Nessandag streets. There are even rumors that he became a Länlanian agent, eventually setting the wheels in motion for the Commonwealth in early 307. Regardless of where he disappeared to, Daniel went missing until a month after the Länlanian invasion—when he came to the forefront of the Sabinian Interim Government. That same year, he would win the first true elections in Sabine since before the Great Winter. As President of Sabine, Daniel worked closely with the Länlanians, facilitating their efforts to modernize the island. Since he took office, Sabine has greatly increased in its standing. Piracy has been wiped off the island, thanks in no small part to Länlanian and Sabinian soldiers. Police units have sprung up across the country and have one of the lowest response times in the region, with the courts holding a similar honor in corruption levels. The economy has also doubled in strength, partially due to Länlanian funding for a multitude of projects and modernization efforts across the state. However, not all Sabinians have agreed with his policies. Many harbor a strong resentment towards the Länlanians. It was these misguided people who assassinated our President last night, as he left a charity event in eastern Nessandag. Already, there is a strong public outcry for the execution of the assassin, who was captured attempting to flee the scene. The police have yet to release his name. President Michael Felton, inaugurated less than an hour after Thomson’s assassination, has promised that due justice will be sought, as well as a continuation of many of Thomson’s policies and pursuits. |
