It's come to my attention that a growing number of men are using hair straighteners as a matter of course. I watched a young 20'something man meet a celebrity on Big Brother. One of his first questions was not "Can you hook me up with a beer?", "Who won the footy on Friday night?" but rather "Can you hook me up with a straightener?" I have set up this poll out of curiousity....is it a sign of the times or just plain weird? Is it becoming increasingly normal for men to spend as much time and money on their hair and face as women traditionally have? Or is it that the lines between what has been distinctively masculine and feminine are truly blurring like never before? Poll away, my fine fellows

Nope, I wouldn't say its normal at all. That fine young man can look forward to every male in the nation calling him gay behind his back. |

I'm assuming this poll is only for guys...just for the record, though, I'm a gal and I do use a hair straightener. |

I would say it was weird, and a bit girly too. |

I value my hair, so I'm not going to take out an iron onto it or rub in Omo until it goes white. |

True, Kaila - I've edited to include us girls. Forgive my oversight, I'm not used to having other females here
it's been a long time since I've had any sisters on this board! |

that's what i thought to...except that moments later another guy asked for a straightener as well! neither the hosts or any one else on the program mentioned this when i talked to my alledgely very cool brother-in-law from Melbourne, he admitted to using his wife's straightener every day! when i joked that i would get him a GHD (very good brand of straightener not a venereal disease), he seemed quite pleased forgive me if i'm just horribly out of touch but i like my men clean but a little scruffy....impeccably groomed men in my experience are usually interested in themselves or other men??? am I wrong??

Yes, that's me in a toga.

Hair straightener? A guy slopping hair product on his bonnet is okay(I guess), but using a straightener is kinda weird. Might set a whole new trend for male metrosexualism. We might see metrosexuals going for the retro look by popping down to the salon for a perm with one of those perm devices (I have no idea what they're called, but they're those giant swivel helmet things attached to the wall that you put your head in.) I remember a South Park episode where the wives were fed up with their husbands become uber-metrosexual. I really can't pay out other people about using hair product or straighteners. My hair is terrible. Trim, grown, and repeat. It's low maintenance (like those Chia Pets from the 80s and 90s) |

Im a guy, I don't use a straightener, mainly because its not in my best interest...to put it in small terms...im growing my hair out and making it wild so I can get dreadlocks. Let the good times roll! |

I think I remember that, was that the one where the "Queer eye..." guys ended up being lobster people?
Now we're talking. Frankly my hair is very much in the catagory of grow until it starts getting in my way. Or I have a formal dinner/date. Whichever comes first. |

I've used hair straighteners before, but thats because I've done almoast everything possible to do with hair, from bald to afro. Quite impressive for somone as red as me Oh and I used to act quite a lot a few years back, just local stuf, but the hair and make up was still kind of rigourous. I don't think ist gay, its his hair, he can do what he wants with it. |

I'm not saying that makes him gay, just that as a young male you have to be very careful about what you are seen caring about. Although it doesn't change anything, it changes how you are viewed by other young males. In some ways , male youth culture is much more complicated than for females. More rules that you're just expected to know. Besides, my hair is straight anyway, wouldn't get anything out of straightening it. |

for me, its about what is appealing or not in a man I think it's like this....men appreciate the end result of the efforts we women go to to pretty up for a night out or whatever but you don't really want to know all about or worse yet, see us go through every little step along the way, you just want to enjoy the end result similarly, i like a guy to look his best but i don't want to know if he's taken two hours to fuss over himself or worst still, spend the evening with him primping in every mirror that we walk past Mr. Inc does not do that stuff, he scrubs up very well without the fuss but I see a lot of this primping and preening stuff with other guys and, to me, it just makes them look like a bunch of girls and i'm not a lesbian, so i don't find it cute or attractive |

For me now the only my only piece of vanity is in my blain black cotten jacket, its a good cut, 3 years old and just starting to show it and makes me feel instantly 10 times as cool. I'd like to know if there is anyone else here who feels the same as me about thier jacket. I meen I just don't feel right without it. Side note. The avatar is what I look like, or rather what I would look like if I were a lego man. |

love the avatar, you are smokin' cool as a Lego dude
I get the thing with your jacket. Used to have a jacket like that. It was a deep red, 3/4 length swing coat in double velvet corduroy and it looked hot! Better yet, I always felt good when I wore it. It was my little bit of 'instant cool'. Someone nicked it (11 years ago) and I've been looking for a replacement ever since. Go through a few jackets each year, never have found the right one. |
