12.14.04 | SIX SIDES OF STEEL THE AFTERMATH OF SIX SIDES OF STEEL How The Epic Match Changed The Careers Of Triple X and AMW By Tim Welch For those of you who don’t know me, I work in the front office at TNA doing various tasks and I can always double as a ring announcer or celebrity impersonator. I’ve worked here at TNA for almost two years and it’s the best job I’ve had. Sometimes it’s stressful and tiring, but that’s the best part. (So I’m told) I have never written a column on any website in my life, but I’ve read columns about other people’s opinions of wrestling since 1997. It wasn't until today that I felt I needed to say something. I needed to give my opinion about something in the world of wrestling whether people wanted to read it or not. The event that inspired me to write this was the Six Sides of Steel at TNA Turning Point. Of course it has been a little over a week and I hope if you are reading this column you have seen it. If not, for your benefit, satisfy your hunger for great wrestling and catch the replay. CLICK HERE FOR REPLAY TIMES – YOUR LAST CHANCE TO SEE THE EPIC TURNING POINT PAY-PER-VIEW EVENT! It was an event to be remembered and a main event for the ages. I was in attendance at the show and I sat behind the stage and watched the monitor the entire match. I was blown away then, but on Friday night I watched the entire show from start to finish on tape. Now before you start thinking about how lame it is that a guy who works for TNA has nothing better to do on a Friday night than watch TNA, I have been sick and I'm trying to rest so I had time. Anyway, I watched the show on tape and got the same chills I got the night I saw it live. I was just as impressed and moved emotionally the second time as I was watching it in person. It truly was a spectacle. America’s Most Wanted and Triple X truly laid it all the line and held nothing back. This match changed the course of Triple X’s careers, and solidified AMW forever in wrestling history. Let's look at each of these four superstars individually. The Fallen Angel Christopher Daniels took a beating. He was opened up early, maybe within the first five minutes, and what a gusher it was! I can't believe he didn't pass out from the blood loss alone. Daniels was also on the top of the four-man suplex stack that brought fans out of their seats. Some say that it looked like Storm took the brunt of that fall, but if you watch Daniels I'd say his tumble was just as painful. Daniels now returns to singles action and gets to shine on his own. He has all the tools to dominate TNA and wrestled a great match on IMPACT in a win over Mikey Batts. Daniels can now choose his fate: Will he enter the race for Jeff Jarrett’s NWA World Heavyweight Title? Perhaps he will set his sights on X Division gold. Can you imagine a bout between The Fallen Angel and Petey Williams, AJ Styles or Chris Sabin? A true dream match for any fan of the X style. Primetime Elix Skipper is truly a show stealing athlete. He is, as he would say, pound for pound the greatest wrestler in the world. He also has the most drive, desire and determination I have ever seen. He is in tremendous physical condition. I hit him in the arm joking around one day and it actually hurt my hand. He is rock solid. I don’t know of any other competitor who could block out distractions and take a chance to walk across the sky. If you watch the tape back you can see he's thinking about performing his signature move on a whole new level, but he can't get a grip on the top, he can't get balance. Eventually he went for it. Absolutely UN-BE-LIEVE-A-BLE! (As Don West would say.) Primetime says that the ring is his house and on that night, it was. Primetime will be X Division champion one day, no doubt about it. The Tennessee Cowboy James Storm fought harder than I have ever seen him fight. He took a hell of a beating. Who do you think was on the receiving end of all the Triple X offense while Harris was handcuffed? I have always said that I wouldn't want to get in a fight with Storm, not because I can't fight, but how do you beat this guy up? You can’t keep him down. He just keeps coming back at you! Let's also mention that he and Harris fought just days after in a tough win over Kazarian and Shane on IMPACT!. Those are not two guys you want to face when you aren't 100%. AMW was obviously not fully healed, evident by the bandages on their ribs and heads. Lastly, there is Wildcat Chris Harris. Chris had an incredible match as well and an emotional one. He was handcuffed and kept from helping his partner. Who knows what he was thinking. He wanted to help his friend and he probably figured there was a good chance that AMW could lose the match and cease to be a team while he was helpless. That's a lot to handle. One more thing about Chris - in the days following Turning Point, I made it a point to seek out all four superstars and see how they were doing physically and if there was anything I could do for them. They always said they were fine and refused help, which is what I expected. Tuesday night I saw Harris at our local hangout in Orlando and I went up and asked again for the third or fourth time, "You feeling okay?" He nodded and said, "Yes, and don't ask again. I appreciate it but you know what I'm going to say." I laughed and said, "Well Chris, everyone is talking about Primetime and the walk and it was really amazing, but what about the guy on the receiving end of that hurricanrana?" He laughed and said, "Yeah who was that guy?" I shrugged and walked away. America’s Most Wanted has definitely solidified its spot as a top team in the world and also over the test of time. They rank up there with the Midnight Express, The Rock and Roll Express, The Hart Foundation, The British Bulldogs and The Steiner Brothers. The sky is the limit for AMW as they have been together a little over two years and have a chance to make history over and over again. Well my long winded take on the cage match is almost finished. I have been a fan of wrestling all my life and have watched as much as I could get my hands on since 1986. I have been through top match lists written by many people and have made sure I watched all the great matches listed. Six Sides of Steel at TNA Turning Point 2004 was not only ground-breaking, but the greatest cage match in any form I have ever seen. Period. Buy the replay, watch the match, and see if I am right. You won’t be disappointed. |
