WHO IS HECTOR GARZA?
A look at Mexico’s son shining in TNA Wrestling

When TNA officials announced plans for the Americas X Cup tournaments in January of 2004, it was for the purpose of introducing fans to other exciting X styles around the world. At the time, a working relationship existed between TNA and Mexico’s AAA wrestling – resulting in a team from the south of the border to challenge Team NWA of Jerry Lynn, Primetime, Chris Sabin and Sonjay Dutt.

The nonstop action of the X Division has its roots in Mexico, as the high-flying style was popular long before wrestling was introduced to American televisions in the 1950s. As a result, generations of Mexico’s wrestlers have been trained in the aerial art form – making the NWA vs. AAA tournament a dream bout for fans of the X style.

One member of the AAA team, Hector Garza, was familiar to fans. He had previously competed in short stints for WCW and the WWE, but was never given much opportunity to showcase his talents. With the Americas X Cup tournament, opportunity was knocking for Garza – and he kicked the door down when all was said and done.

During his time competing in the United States, Garza was also one of the top superstars in Mexico. Hailing from Monterrey, Garza made his pro debut there in 1992, competing for the CMLL organization and later for the AAA promotion. Within three years, Garza had already won three “hair vs. hair” matches, a popular match in Mexico’s lore along with “mask vs. mask” matches.

Garza’s first U.S. competition came as part of the AAA contingent that competed at the 1997 Royal Rumble. He was later signed by WCW, but his talents got shuffled amongst the millionaires and egos that ruled the ranks. After leaving WCW, Garza returned to the AAA promotion where he later captured the Mexico National Heavyweight Title in 2002.

So when it came time for Garza and the rest of Team Mexico to compete in the inaugural February 2004 X Cup, it marked his third major United States promotion – and this time, Garza wasn’t going to be denied the spotlight. Not only did Garza and Team Mexico win the first Americas X Cup – they dominated the next two as well, beating Canada and the United Kingdom before falling to Team NWA in May’s World X Cup final. At the center of Team Mexico’s success? None other than Hector Garza, who transcended his own team to capture the admiration of TNA fans.

Following a brief return to Mexico, Garza returned to TNA just prior to Victory Road on a full-time basis. Signing a contract to compete with TNA, the superstar finally had the opportunity to show the world just how talented he was. He won the 20 Man X Gauntlet at Victory Road and has followed it up with a win at Turning Point and an amazing win over AJ Styles last Friday on Impact.

The win not only cemented Garza as a rising force in TNA, but earned him a match against NWA World Heavyweight Champion Jeff Jarrett this Friday on Impact. While a non-title bout, the main event spotlight will certainly serve as a measuring stick to Garza’s future in TNA. If Garza can find a way to beat Jarrett, it won’t be long before the superstar finds himself in a match for the greatest prize in wrestling! Based on his recent success, there’s no way Garza is going to give up now.
