Today is the day that David Cameron officially can pack his bags for 10 Downing Street – although I wouldn’t be surprised if they had already been packed for a few hours. So I decided that instead of having useless and pointless discussion over what is to come - which is in fact, now, impossible to tell. So what has happened on this day in the past? The first thing to spring to mind is the year 1812 – Spencer Percival, the only UK prime minister to ever be assassinated, is shot on the floors of Westminster – the low point of British politics, some say. Of course, it wasn’t, in fact it was a stunning happening, and there was – naturally – a fear that there would be an uprising, however there wasn’t, in fact he acted alone and the nation, unsurprisingly, mourned by the whole nation. It was a case of – in practise – uprising or mourning, and Spencer Percival was buried 5 days later at Egmont Vault, in Charlton – a place now famous for Charlton F.C. Incidentally, comedian Jim Davidson is a supporter of the Conservative Party who is an advocate of The Right and Honourable David Cameron. Some other famous events – and some not so famous – to happen on 11th May was when Bradford City’s current stadium, the Valley Parade, experienced a flash fire; the drab affair, the match at which point being 0-0, was sparked (excuse my pun) up by a glow being spotted in the G Block, the glow grew bigger and it took just two minutes, two minutes, for the police to miraculously come to the conclusion that they should evacuate the stand, the wooden floor however decided to put a bit of a problem with escaping, it caught alight and suddenly the wind, coupled with the fierce fire, created an impression of a fireball engulfing the stand. John Hawley, a Bradford player, climbed stands, being engulfed by smoke, to save a fan. John Hawley – coincidently – played for Arsenal, whose famous fan, Roger Daltrey appeared, with his band “The Who”, on the Simpsons, which featured former prime minister Tony Blair in the “Regina Monologues” (2003) who went to Fettes College, which is the Scottish equivalent of Eton College, which David Cameron attended. So a lot happens of the 11th May. |
