With the recent sustained closure of certain airspace in europe I wondered how fellow nations are affected by this. Is a no flights future possible you think? |

Long-term, globally? Wow, not without a MAJOR change to economies and industries worldwide. Business travel - the web would have to take up a ton of slack for teleconferencing and video teleconferencing. Tourism everywhere would take a hit. Gas, tire, car, and car repair prices would all go up. Short term, a boom in trucking and shipping, and those who produce those vehicles. Rail cargo might make a bit of an upswing, too. The biggest changes would be to manufacturing. No "just in time" inventory. There would always be extra goods in the pipeline for any manufacturing process, down the entire chain. Strikes and market fluctuations would be more costly as a result. Prices would climb. Overall, I think long term restriction of air travel would be a bad thing, at least in the 1-5 year timeframe. By investing in certain markets, you might offset some of the economic hit, if you were lucky. But I'd think it would cause another global financial crisis, pretty much immediately. Short answer: No, I don't think it's possible, without some new technology. Transporters, maybe. |

From what I heard... the volcano should keep getting a lil less severe... and it takes a few days for the material to be spread out enough so it won't hurt air travel. So I don't think it would be any more than a couple weeks? |

Ah, I can't remember the exact dates, but I read in the paper this morning that the last time the volcano erupted it lasted almost 3 years, erupting from once every fortnight to once every few months.
